Arrow pattern avoidance in permutations: structure and enumeration
Arrow patterns were introduced by Berman and Tenner as a generalization of vincular patterns. They observed that arrow patterns have the potential to bridge the divide between a permutation's cycle notation and its one-line notation; in support of this, they used arrow avoidance to enumerate shallow and cyclic shallow permutations. More recently, $321$-avoiding cyclic permutations were recharacterized entirely in terms of arrow avoidance. Motivated by these results, we initiate a systematic study of arrow avoidance. In this paper, we prove structural results about arrow patterns, including defining arrow-Wilf equivalence, and enumerate several arrow avoidance classes. Finally, we consider the avoidance of pairs of arrow patterns, focusing on cases that prohibit fixed points in the underlying permutation.

Seaweed algebras with restricted part sizes
Seaweed algebras are a class of Lie algebras that are naturally characterized by a pair of compositions, which in turn are represented visually as planar graphs called meanders. These meanders provide a straightforward method for computing the index of the associated algebra. The goal of this paper is to enumerate those seaweed algebras with a fixed index and whose associated compositions have restricted part sizes. In particular, we enumerate those with composition part sizes from so-called acyclic sets. We also establish a bijection between sets of indecomposable seaweed algebras with meanders with certain restricted part sizes and sets of permutations with restricted displacements. In certain cases, the index of the algebra can be determined by a simple statistic on the permutation.

Characterizing avoidance in cycles via vincular patterns
We show that cyclic permutations avoiding $321$ are precisely those permutations whose image under the fundamental bijection avoid a set of vincular patterns. We do this by using pattern functions and arrow patterns, in combination with the characterization of $321$ avoidance in terms of equality of the upper bound of the Daiconis-Graham inequalities. We then explore some consequences of this result, including upper and lower bound results on the growth rate of $321$ avoiding cycles.

Pattern avoidance in non-crossing and non-nesting permutations
Non-crossing and non-nesting permutations are variations of the well-known Stirling permutations. A permutation $π$ on $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ is called non-crossing if it avoids the crossing patterns $\{1212,2121\}$ and is called non-nesting if it avoids the nesting patterns $\{1221,2112\}.$ Pattern avoidance in these permutations has been considered in recent years, but it has remained open to enumerate the non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid a single pattern of length 3. In this paper, we provide generating functions for those non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid the pattern 231 (and, by symmetry, the patterns 132, 213, or 312).

Pattern-avoiding shallow permutations
Shallow permutations were defined in 1977 to be those that satisfy the lower bound of the Diaconis-Graham inequality. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these permutations. In particular, Berman and Tenner showed they satisfy certain pattern avoidance conditions in their cycle form and Woo showed they are exactly those whose cycle diagrams are unlinked. Shallow permutations that avoid 321 have appeared in many contexts; they are those permutations for which depth equals the reflection length, they have unimodal cycles, and they have been called Boolean permutations. Motivated by this interest in 321-avoiding shallow permutations, we investigate $σ$-avoiding shallow permutations for all $σ\in \mathcal{S}_3$. To do this, we develop more general structural results about shallow permutations, and apply them to enumerate shallow permutations avoiding any pattern of length 3.

Pattern avoidance and the fundamental bijection
The fundamental bijection is a bijection $θ:\mathcal{S}_n\to\mathcal{S}_n$ in which one uses the standard cycle form of one permutation to obtain another permutation in one-line form. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $π\in \mathcal{S}_n$ that avoids a pattern $σ\in \mathcal{S}_3$, whose image $θ(π)$ also avoids $σ$. We additionally consider what happens under repeated iterations of $θ$; in particular, we enumerate permutations $π\in \mathcal{S}_n$ that have the property that $π$ and its first $k$ iterations under $θ$ all avoid a pattern $σ$. Finally, we consider permutations with the property that $π=θ^2(π)$ that avoid a given pattern $σ$, and end the paper with some directions for future study.

Pattern-restricted permutations of small order
We enumerate 132-avoiding permutations of order 3 in terms of the Catalan and Motzkin generating functions, answering a question of Bóna and Smith from 2019. We also enumerate 231-avoiding permutations that are composed only of 3-cycles, 2-cycles, and fixed points.

Systems of ideals parametrized by combinatorial structures
A symmetric chain of ideals is a rule that assigns to each finite set $S$ an ideal $I_S$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x_i]_{i \in S}$ such that if $φ\colon S \to T$ is an embedding of finite sets then the induced homomorphism $φ_*$ maps $I_S$ into $I_T$. Cohen proved a fundamental noetherian result for such chains, which has seen intense interest in recent years due to a wide array of new applications. In this paper, we consider similar chains of ideals, but where finite sets are replaced by more complicated combinatorial objects, such as trees. We give a general criterion for a Cohen-like theorem, and give several specific examples where our criterion holds. We also prove similar results for certain limiting situations, where a permutation group acts on an infinite variable polynomial ring. This connects to topics in model theory, such as Fraïssé limits and oligomorphic groups.

A counterexample to a Gröbner approach for noetherianity of the twisted commutative algebra ${\rm Sym}({\rm Sym}^2(\mathbf{C}^\infty))$
We resolve an open question posed by the authors of arXiv:1501.06925v2 in 2015 concerning a Gröbner theoretic approach for the noetherianity of the twisted commutative algebra ${\rm Sym}({\rm Sym}^2(\mathbf{C}^\infty))$. We provide a negative answer to their question by producing an explicit antichain. In doing so, we establish a connection to well studied posets of graphs under the subgraph and induced subgraph relation. We then analyze this connection to suggest future paths of investigation, for example a deeper study of initial ideals in twisted commutative algebras.

Representation stability for sequences of 0-Hecke modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new category analogous to ${\bf FI}$ for the $0$-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$ called the $0$-Hecke category, $\mathcal{H}$, indexing sequences of representations of $H_n(0)$ as $n$ varies under suitable compatibility conditions. We establish a new type of representation stability in this setting and prove it is implied by being a finitely generated $\mathcal{H}$-module. We then provide examples of $\mathcal{H}$-modules and discuss further desirable properties these modules possess.

The spin-Brauer diagram algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the spin-Brauer diagram algebra, denoted ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$, that arises from studying an analogous form of Schur-Weyl duality for the action of the pin group on ${\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ$. Here ${\bf V}$ is the standard $N$-dimensional complex representation of ${\bf Pin}(N)$ and $Δ$ is the spin representation. When $δ= N$ is a positive integer, we define a surjective map ${\bf SB}_n(N) \twoheadrightarrow {\rm End}_{{\bf Pin}(N)}({\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ)$ and show it is an isomorphism for $N \geq 2n$. We show ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$ is a cellular algebra and use cellularity to characterize its irreducible representations.
