Maximal Lehmer Codes for Permutations with Classical and Consecutive 321-Avoidance
Let ${S}_n(321)$ and ${S}_n(\underline{321})$ denote the sets of $n$-permutations avoiding the classical pattern $321$ and the consecutive pattern $\underline{321}$, respectively. Permutations are in bijection with Lehmer codes, a type of inversion sequence. Using Lehmer codes, we create the corresponding weighted posets ${L}_n(321)$ and ${L}_n(\underline{321})$, where the weight of a code is the inversion number of its permutation. We show that there are $2^{n-2}$ maximal elements of ${L}_n(321)$, while the maximal elements of ${L}_n(\underline{321})$ are enumerated by the Padovan numbers. We also show that when $n$ is even, each of these posets has a unique maximum weight element, and that when $n$ is odd, there are two maximum weight elements. These maximum weight Lehmer codes correspond to the pattern avoiding permutations with maximum inversion number.

The Lehmer complex of a Bruhat interval
We introduce Lehmer codes for several finite Coxeter groups, including all classical Weyl groups. These codes correspond to embed products of chains in the Bruhat order, which allow us to associate to each lower Bruhat interval of these groups a multicomplex whose $f$-polynomial is the Poincaré polynomial of the interval. Via a general construction, we prove that these polynomials are $h$-polynomials of vertex-decomposable simplicial complexes, which we call Lehmer complexes. Moreover we provide a classification, in terms of unimodal permutations, of Poincaré polynomials of smooth Schubert varieties in flag manifolds.

Iterating the Lehmer code on inversion sequences: Catalan fixed points and finite stabilization
We study an operator $Θ$ on finite integer sequences, where $Θ(σ)_i$ counts the entries to the left of $σ_i$ that are strictly smaller than $σ_i$. This operator is a variant of the so-called Lehmer code. For every sequence $σ$, the image $Θ(σ)$ is an inversion sequence, and the restriction of $Θ$ to permutations of $[0,n-1]$ is a bijection onto inversion sequences of length $n$. We characterize the fixed points of $Θ$ by avoidance of the pattern $101$ together with a saturation condition, prove that they are counted by the Catalan numbers, and give an explicit recursive bijection with Dyck paths. We also show that the sequences whose first $Θ$-image is fixed are precisely those avoiding both $101$ and $201$. Finally, we prove finite stabilization for all inversion sequences, exhibit a family attaining the maximal stabilization time, and show that the second stabilization level is not closed under classical patterns.

Lehmer Codes and the Reverse-Complement Mapping from (32-1)-Avoiding Permutations to (3-21)-Avoiding Permutations
Let $S_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $S_n(3\text{-}21)$ denote the sets of $n$-permutations avoiding the vincular patterns $32\text{-}1$ and $3\text{-}21$, respectively. Using Lehmer codes, we realize these families as weighted posets $L_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $L_n(3\text{-}21)$, where the weight of a code is the inversion number of its permutation. We show that the maximal elements of each of these posets, $\operatorname{Max} L_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $\operatorname{Max} L_n(3\text{-}21)$, are enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We demonstrate that the classical reverse-complement map on permutations restricts to a natural bijection between these two sets of maximal elements, revealing a deep symmetry between their underlying poset structures.

Stretched Schubert coefficients are eventually quasi-polynomial
For a permutation $u\in S_n$, let $N\ast u\in S_{Nn}$ be the permutation with scaled Lehmer code. For given $u,v,w\in S_n$ and integer $N$, the stretched Schubert coefficients are defined as $f_{u,v,w}(N):=c_{N*u,N*v}^{N*w}$. Our main result is that the function $f_{u,v,w}(N)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial. This proves Kirillov's conjecture (2004), that the generating function for the sequence $\{f_{u,v,w}(N)\}$ is rational. For the proof, we use combinatorics of pipe dreams to show that Schubert coefficients are given as an alternating sum of the numbers of integer points in certain polytopes. These polytopes behave nicely under stretching, and we use Ehrhart theory to obtain the result. As a consequence of the proof, we also present new counterexamples to the saturation conjecture for Schubert coefficients, and give computational applications.

Billey-Postnikov posets, rationally smooth Schubert varieties, and Poincaré duality
Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions govern when Schubert varieties $X(w)$ decompose as bundles of smaller Schubert varieties. We further develop the theory of BP decompositions and show that, in finite type, they can be recognized by pattern conditions and are indexed by the order ideals of a poset $\mathsf{bp}(w)$ that we introduce; we conjecture that this holds in any Coxeter group. We then apply BP decompositions to show that, when $X(w)$ is rationally smooth and $W$ simply laced, the Schubert structure constants $c_{uv}^w$ satisfy a triangularity property, yielding a canonical involution on the Schubert cells of $X(w)$ respecting Poincaré duality. We also classify the rationally smooth Bruhat intervals in finite type (other than $E$) which admit generalized Lehmer codes, answering questions and conjectures of Billey-Fan-Losonczy, Bolognini-Sentinelli, and Bishop-Milićević-Thomas. Finally, we show that rationally smooth Schubert varieties in infinite type need not have Grassmannian BP decompositions, disproving conjectures of Richmond-Slofstra and Oh-Richmond.

A partial order on the 240 packings of PG(3,2)
It has long been known that the most symmetrical solutions of Kirkman's Schoolgirl Problem can be constructed from the $240$ packings of the projective space $PG(3, 2)$, but it seems to have escaped notice that these packings have the structure of a partially ordered set. In this paper, we construct a shellable Bruhat-like graded partial order on the packings of $PG(3, 2)$ that refines the partial order on the product of four chains $[8]\times[5]\times[3]\times[2]$ and defines a Lehmer code on the packings. The partial order exists because the packings of $PG(3, 2)$ form a quasiparabolic set (in the sense of Rains--Vazirani) that is in bijective correspondence with a certain collection of maximal orthogonal subsets of the $E_8$ root system. The $E_8$ construction also induces transitive actions of the Weyl groups of type $D_n$ on the packings for $5 \leq n \leq 8$, and these actions are faithful for $n < 8$. It is possible to define both the signed permutation action and the partial order using the combinatorics of labelled Fano planes.

A weak Lehmer code for type $F_4$
We show that, despite the Poincaré polynomial of $F_4$ is a product of $q$-analogues, the Bruhat order of $F_4$ does not admit a product of chains as subposet. This answers negatively, in this type, a question by Billey, Fan and Losonczy. In other words, we show that Lehmer codes for type $F_4$ do not exist. Nevertheless, by introducing weak Lehmer codes, we construct explicitly multicomplexes and Lehmer complexes for any lower Bruhat interval in type $F_4$.

An Introduction to Algebraic Combinatorics
This is an introduction to algebraic combinatorics, written for a quarter-long graduate course. It starts with a rigorous introduction to formal power series with some combinatorial applications, then discusses integer partitions (proving Jacobi's triple product identity), permutations (Lehmer codes, cycles) and subtractive methods (alternating sums, cancellations and inclusion-exclusion principles, with a particular focus on sign-reversing involutions and determinants). The last chapter introduces symmetric polynomials and proves the Littlewood--Richardson rule using Bender--Knuth involutions (a la Stembridge). The appendix contains over 200 exercises (without solutions).
Inversions in Colored Permutations, Derangements, and Involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Arslan, Altoum, and Zaarour introduced an inversion statistic for generalized symmetric groups. In this work, we study the distribution of this statistic over colored permutations, including derangements and involutions. By establishing a bijective correspondence between colored permutations and colored Lehmer codes, we develop a unified framework for enumerating colored Mahonian numbers and analyzing their combinatorial properties. We derive explicit formulas, recurrence relations, and generating functions for the number of inversions in these families, extending classical results to the colored setting. We conclude with explicit expressions for inversions in colored derangements and involutions.
Cyclic sieving on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
Published • View Publication • BIB
We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP and conjecture three more. Our results are organized largely by orbit structure, proving instances of the CSP for involutions with $2^{n-1}$ fixed points and $2^{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ fixed points, as well as maps whose orbits all have the same size. The FindStat maps which exhibit the CSP include a map constructed by Corteel (using a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger) to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima, conjugation by the long cycle, as well as reverse, complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, and toric promotion. Our results combined with those of [Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker, Welch 2023] show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa.
Homomesies on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
Published in Mathematics of Computation 93 (2024), no. 346, 921-976 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations in which we identify and prove 122 instances of the homomesy phenomenon. Homomesy occurs when the average value of a statistic is the same on each orbit of a given map. The maps we investigate include the Lehmer code rotation, the reverse, the complement, the Foata bijection, and the Kreweras complement. The statistics studied relate to familiar notions such as inversions, descents, and permutation patterns, and also more obscure constructs. Beside the many new homomesy results, we discuss our research method, in which we used SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify potential homomesies.

A Consecutive Lehmer Code for Parabolic Quotients of the Symmetric Group
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 28, 3 (2021). P3.53 • View Publication • BIB
In this article we define an encoding for parabolic permutations that distinguishes between parabolic $231$-avoiding permutations. We prove that the componentwise order on these codes realizes the parabolic Tamari lattice, and conclude a direct and simple proof that the parabolic Tamari lattice is isomorphic to a certain $ν$-Tamari lattice, with an explicit bijection. Furthermore, we prove that this bijection is closely related to the map $Θ$ used when the lattice isomorphism was first proved in (Ceballos, Fang and Mühle, 2020), settling an open problem therein.

Harmonic bases for generalized coinvariant algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k \leq n$ be nonnegative integers and let $λ$ be a partition of $k$. S. Griffin recently introduced a quotient $R_{n,λ}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables which simultaneously generalizes the Delta Conjecture coinvariant rings of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and the cohomology rings of Springer fibers studied by Tanisaki and Garsia-Procesi. We describe the space $V_{n,λ}$ of harmonics attached to $R_{n,λ}$ and produce a harmonic basis of $R_{n,λ}$ indexed by certain ordered set partitions $\mathcal{OP}_{n,λ}$. The combinatorics of this basis is governed by a new extension of the {\em Lehmer code} of a permutation to $\mathcal{OP}_{n, λ}$.

A Generalized Cover's Problem
Generalizing a problem posed by Cover, we propose an adversarial game in which a permutation is incrementally constructed in a setting of partial information. As in the secretary problem, this permutation is exposed in stages via the successive components of its Lehmer code. Extending Cover's result, which constitutes the case $n = 2$, we establish that a random permutation of $n$ adversarially constructed real numbers can be reconstructed with better-than-random probability, provided that certain among the numbers it permutes are made visible during the process.

The $\s$-Eulerian polynomials have only real roots
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 1441-1466 • View Publication • BIB
We study the roots of generalized Eulerian polynomials via a novel approach. We interpret Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of a statistic over inversion sequences. Inversion sequences (also known as Lehmer codes or subexcedant functions) were recently generalized by Savage and Schuster, to arbitrary sequences $\s$ of positive integers, which they called $\s$-inversion sequences. Our object of study is the generating polynomial of the {\em ascent} statistic over the set of $\s$-inversion sequences of length $n$. Since this ascent statistic over inversion sequences is equidistributed with the descent statistic over permutations we call this generalized polynomial the \emph{$\s$-Eulerian polynomial}. The main result of this paper is that, for any sequence $\s$ of positive integers, the $\s$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots. This result is first shown to generalize many existing results about the real-rootedness of various Eulerian polynomials. We then show that it can be used to settle a conjecture of Brenti, that Eulerian polynomials for all finite Coxeter groups have only real roots. It is then extended to several $q$-analogs. We also show that the MacMahon--Carlitz $q$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots whenever $q$ is a positive real number confirming a conjecture of Chow and Gessel. The same holds true for the $(\des,\finv)$-generating polynomials and also for the $(\des,\fmaj)$-generating polynomials for the hyperoctahedral group and the wreath product groups, confirming further conjectures of Chow and Gessel, and Chow and Mansour, respectively.

Lehmer code transforms and Mahonian statistics on permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2000 Babson and Steingr{\'ı}msson introduced the notion of vincular patterns in permutations. They shown that essentially all well-known Mahonian permutation statistics can be written as combinations of such patterns. Also, they proved and conjectured that other combinations of vincular patterns are still Mahonian. These conjectures were proved later: by Foata and Zeilberger in 2001, and by Foata and Randrianarivony in 2006. In this paper we give an alternative proof of some of these results. Our approach is based on permutation codes which, like Lehmer's code, map bijectively permutations onto subexcedant sequences. More precisely, we give several code transforms (i.e., bijections between subexcedant sequences) which when applied to Lehmer's code yield new permutation codes which count occurrences of some vincular patterns.

A relation between the shape of a permutation and the shape of the base poset derived from the Lehmer codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a permutation $ω\in S_{n}$ Denoncourt constructed a poset $M_ω$ which is the set of join-irreducibles of the Lehmer codes of the permutations in $[e, ω]$ in the inversion order on $S_{n}$. In this paper we show that $M_ω$ is a $B_{2}$-free poset if and only if $ω$ is a 3412-3421-avoiding permutation.

A refinement of weak order intervals into distributive lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider arbitrary intervals in the left weak order on the symmetric group $S_n$. We show that the Lehmer codes of permutations in an interval form a distributive lattice under the product order. Furthermore, the rank-generating function of this distributive lattice matches that of the weak order interval. We construct a poset such that its lattice of order ideals is isomorphic to the lattice of Lehmer codes of permutations in the given interval. We show that there are at least $\left(\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor\right)!$ permutations in $S_n$ that form a rank-symmetric interval in the weak order.

Multivariate generalizations of the Foata-Schutzenberger equidistribution
Published • View Publication • BIB
A result of Foata and Schutzenberger states that two statistics on permutations, the number of inversions and the inverse major index, have the same distribution on a descent class. We give a multivariate generalization of this property: the sorted vectors of the Lehmer code, of the inverse majcode, and of a new code (the inverse saillance code), have the same distribution on a descent class, and their common multivariate generating function is a flagged ribbon Schur function.
