Orbitmesy and promotion on self-dual posets
We introduce the notion of orbitmesy, which is related to homomesy, a central phenomenon in dynamical algebraic combinatorics. An orbit $O$ is said to be orbitmesic with respect to a statistic if the orbit's average statistic value is equal to the global average. We particularly focus on the action of promotion on increasing labelings of certain fence posets called zig-zag posets, and two statistics, the antipodal sum statistic and the total sum statistic. We classify all of the orbitmesic promotion orbits for the zig-zag poset with four elements. Along the way, we investigate how homomesy of one action can be used to find orbitmesic orbits for another action, for the same fixed statistic. We prove several general results which can be used to find infinite families of orbitmesic orbits for any self-dual poset.
Interval-closed set rowmotion and homomesy on products of two chains
We study rowmotion dynamics on interval-closed sets. Our first main result proves a simplification of the global definition of interval-closed set rowmotion from (Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker, and Welch 2024). We then completely describe the orbits of interval-closed set rowmotion on products of two chains $[2]\times[n]$ and use this understanding to prove a homomesy conjecture from (ELMSW 2024) involving the signed cardinality statistic.

Toggleability Spaces of Fences
We completely describe the order ideal (resp. antichain) toggleability space for general fences: the space of statistics which are linear combinations of order ideal (antichain) indicator functions and equal to a constant plus a linear combination of toggleability statistics. This allows us to strengthen some homomesies under rowmotion on fences proven by Elizalde et al. and prove some new homomesy results for combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational rowmotion.

Rowmotion on the chain of V's poset and whirling dynamics
Given a finite poset $P$, we study the _whirling_ action on vertex-labelings of $P$ with the elements $\{0,1,2,\dotsc ,k\}$. When such labelings are (weakly) order-reversing, we call them $k$-bounded $P$-partitions. We give a general equivariant bijection between $k$-bounded $P$-partitions and order ideals of the poset $P\times [k]$ which conveys whirling to the well-studied rowmotion operator. As an application, we derive periodicity and homomesy results for rowmotion acting on the chain of V's poset $V \times [k]$. We are able to generalize some of these results to the more complicated dynamics of rowmotion on $C_{n}\times [k]$, where $C_{n}$ is the claw poset with $n$ unrelated elements each covering $\widehat{0}$.
Cyclic sieving on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP and conjecture three more. Our results are organized largely by orbit structure, proving instances of the CSP for involutions with $2^{n-1}$ fixed points and $2^{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ fixed points, as well as maps whose orbits all have the same size. The FindStat maps which exhibit the CSP include a map constructed by Corteel (using a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger) to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima, conjugation by the long cycle, as well as reverse, complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, and toric promotion. Our results combined with those of [Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker, Welch 2023] show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa.

Homomesy on permutations with toggling actions
Published in Involve 18 (2025) 829-854 • View PublicationBIB
Homomesy is an invariance phenomenon in dynamical algebraic combinatorics which occurs when the average value of some statistic on a set of combinatorial objects is the same over each orbit generated by a map on these objects. In this paper we perform a systematic search for statistics homomesic for the set of permutations under the rotation map, identifying and proving 34 instances of homomesy. We show that these homomesies actually hold not only for rotation but in fact for a whole class of maps related to rotation by the notion of toggling, which is identified initially with composition of simple transpositions. In this way these maps are related to the rowmotion action defined on various combinatorial structures, which has a useful definition in terms of toggling. We prove some initial results on maps given by restricted or modified toggles. We discuss also the computational method used to identify candidate statistics from FindStat, a combinatorial statistics database.
Toggling, rowmotion, and homomesy on interval-closed sets
Interval-closed sets of a poset are a natural superset of order ideals. We initiate the study of interval-closed sets of finite posets from enumerative and dynamical perspectives. In particular, we use the generalized toggle group to define rowmotion on interval-closed sets as a product of these toggles. Our main theorem is an intricate global characterization of rowmotion on interval-closed sets, which we show is equivalent to the toggling definition. We also study specific posets; we enumerate interval-closed sets of ordinal sums of antichains, completely describe their rowmotion orbits, and prove a homomesy result involving the signed cardinality statistic. Finally, we study interval-closed sets of product of chains posets, proving further results about enumeration and homomesy.
Rowmotion on rooted trees
A rooted tree T is a poset whose Hasse diagram is a graph-theoretic tree having a unique minimal element. We study rowmotion on antichains and lower order ideals of T. Recently Elizalde, Roby, Plante and Sagan considered rowmotion on fences which are posets whose Hasse diagram is a path (but permitting any number of minimal elements). They showed that in this case, the orbits could be described in terms of tilings of a cylinder. They also defined a new notion called homometry which means that a statistic takes a constant value on all orbits of the same size. This is a weaker condition than the well-studied concept of homomesy which requires a constant value for the average of the statistic over all orbits. Rowmotion on fences is often homometric for certain statistics, but not homomesic. We introduce a tiling model for rowmotion on rooted trees. We use it to study various specific types of trees and show that they exhibit homometry, although not homomesy, for certain statistics.
Homomesies on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database

In this paper, we perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations in which we identify and prove 122 instances of the homomesy phenomenon. Homomesy occurs when the average value of a statistic is the same on each orbit of a given map. The maps we investigate include the Lehmer code rotation, the reverse, the complement, the Foata bijection, and the Kreweras complement. The statistics studied relate to familiar notions such as inversions, descents, and permutation patterns, and also more obscure constructs. Beside the many new homomesy results, we discuss our research method, in which we used SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify potential homomesies.

$P$-strict promotion and $Q$-partition rowmotion: the graded case
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 115 (2024), no. 103776, 24 pp • View PublicationBIB
Promotion and rowmotion are intriguing actions in dynamical algebraic combinatorics which have inspired much work in recent years. In this paper, we study $P$-strict labelings of a finite, graded poset $P$ of rank $n$ and labels at most $q$, which generalize semistandard Young tableaux with $n$ rows and entries at most $q$, under promotion. These $P$-strict labelings are in equivariant bijection with $Q$-partitions under rowmotion, where $Q$ equals the product of $P$ and a chain of $q-n-1$ elements. We study the case where $P$ equals the product of chains in detail, yielding new homomesy and order results in the realm of tableaux and beyond. Furthermore, we apply the bijection to the cases in which $P$ is a minuscule poset and when $P$ is the three element $V$ poset. Finally, we give resonance results for promotion on $P$-strict labelings and rowmotion on $Q$-partitions.

Rank Polynomials of Fence Posets are Unimodal
Published in Discrete Mathematics (2023), Vol. 346, Issue 2 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that says that rank polynomials of the distributive lattices of lower ideals of fence posets are unimodal. We do this by introducing a related class of circular fence posets and proving a stronger version of the conjecture due to McConville, Sagan and Smyth. We show that the rank polynomials of circular fence posets are symmetric and conjecture that unimodality holds except in some particular cases. We also apply the recent work of Elizalde, Plante, Roby and Sagan on rowmotion on fences and show many of their homomesy results hold for the circular case as well.
Homomesy via Toggleability Statistics
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 3(2), 2023 • View PublicationBIB
The rowmotion operator acting on the set of order ideals of a finite poset has been the focus of a significant amount of recent research. One of the major goals has been to exhibit homomesies: statistics that have the same average along every orbit of the action. We systematize a technique for proving that various statistics of interest are homomesic by writing these statistics as linear combinations of "toggleability statistics" (originally introduced by Striker) plus a constant. We show that this technique recaptures most of the known homomesies for the posets on which rowmotion has been most studied. We also show that the technique continues to work in modified contexts. For instance, this technique also yields homomesies for the piecewise-linear and birational extensions of rowmotion; furthermore, we introduce a $q$-analogue of rowmotion and show that the technique yields homomesies for "$q$-rowmotion" as well.

Rowmotion on fences
Published in Algebraic Combin., 6 (2023), no. 1, 17-36, • View PublicationBIB
A fence is a poset with elements F = {x_1, x_2, ..., x_n} and covers x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_a > x_{a+1} > ... > x_b < x_{b+1} < ... where a, b, ... are positive integers. We investigate rowmotion on antichains and ideals of F. In particular, we show that orbits of antichains can be visualized using tilings. This permits us to prove various homomesy results for the number of elements of an antichain or ideal in an orbit. Rowmotion on fences also exhibits a new phenomenon, which we call homometry, where the value of a statistic is constant on orbits of the same size. Along the way, we prove a general homomesy result for all self-dual posets. We end with some conjectures and avenues for future research.

$P$-strict promotion and $B$-bounded rowmotion, with applications to tableaux of many flavors
Published in Combinatorial Theory, Volume 1, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We define P-strict labelings for a finite poset P as a generalization of semistandard Young tableaux and show that promotion on these objects is in equivariant bijection with a toggle action on B-bounded Q-partitions of an associated poset Q. In many nice cases, this toggle action is conjugate to rowmotion. We apply this result to flagged tableaux, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and symplectic tableaux, obtaining new cyclic sieving and homomesy conjectures. We also show P-strict promotion can be equivalently defined using Bender-Knuth and jeu de taquin perspectives.

Foatic actions of the symmetric group and fixed-point homomesy
We study maps on the set of permutations of n generated by the Rényi-Foata map intertwined with other dihedral symmetries (of a permutation considered as a 0-1 matrix). Iterating these maps leads to dynamical systems that in some cases exhibit interesting orbit structures, e.g., every orbit size being a power of two, and homomesic statistics (ones which have the same average over each orbit). In particular, the number of fixed points (aka 1-cycles) of a permutation appears to be homomesic with respect to three of these maps, even in one case where the orbit structures are far from nice. For the most interesting such "Foatic" action, we give a heap analysis and recursive structure that allows us to prove the fixed-point homomesy and orbit properties, but two other cases remain conjectural.

Birational rowmotion and coxeter-motion on minuscule posets
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 28 (2021), P1.17 • View PublicationBIB
Birational rowmotion is a discrete dynamical system on the set of all positive real-valued functions on a finite poset, which is a birational lift of combinatorial rowmotion on order ideals. It is known that combinatorial rowmotion for a minuscule poset has order equal to the Coxeter number, and exhibits the file homomesy phenomenon for refined order ideal cardinality statistic. In this paper we generalize these results to the birational setting. Moreover, as a generalization of birational promotion on a product of two chains, we introduce birational Coxeter-motion on minuscule posets, and prove that it enjoys periodicity and file homomesy.
Rowmotion Orbits of Trapezoid Posets

Rowmotion is an invertible operator on the order ideals of a poset which has been extensively studied and is well understood for the rectangle poset. In this paper, we show that rowmotion is equivariant with respect to a bijection of Hamaker, Patrias, Pechenik and Williams between order ideals of rectangle and trapezoid posets, thereby affirming a conjecture of Hopkins that the rectangle and trapezoid posets have the same rowmotion orbit structures. Our main tools in proving this are $K$-jeu-de-taquin and (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence of increasing tableaux. We define $almost$ $minimal$ $tableaux$ as a family of tableaux naturally arising from order ideals and show for any $λ$, the almost minimal tableaux of shape $λ$ are in different (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence classes. We also discuss and make some progress on related conjectures of Hopkins on down-degree homomesy.

A birational lifting of the Stanley-Thomas word on products of two chains
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Combinatorics (August 18, 2021) dmtcs:6633 • View PublicationBIB
The dynamics of certain combinatorial actions and their liftings to actions at the piecewise-linear and birational level have been studied lately with an eye towards questions of periodicity, orbit structure, and invariants. One key property enjoyed by the rowmotion operator on certain finite partially-ordered sets is homomesy, where the average value of a statistic is the same for all orbits. To prove refined versions of homomesy in the product of two chain posets, J. Propp and the second author used an equivariant bijection discovered (less formally) by R. Stanley and H. Thomas. We explore the lifting of this "Stanley--Thomas word" to the piecewise-linear, birational, and noncommutative realms. Although the map is no longer a bijection, so cannot be used to prove periodicity directly, it still gives enough information to prove the homomesy at the piecewise-linear and birational levels (a result previously shown by D. Grinberg, S. Hopkins, and S. Okada). Even at the noncommutative level, the Stanley--Thomas word of a poset labeling rotates cyclically with the lifting of antichain rowmotion. Along the way we give some formulas for noncommutative antichain rowmotion that we hope will be first steps towards proving the conjectured periodicity at this level.

Birational and noncommutative lifts of antichain toggling and rowmotion
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rowmotion action on order ideals or on antichains of a finite partially ordered set has been studied (under a variety of names) by many authors. Depending on the poset, one finds unexpectedly interesting orbit structures, instances of (small order) periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy. Many of these nice features still hold when the action is extended to $[0,1]$-labelings of the poset or (via detropicalization) to labelings by rational functions (the birational setting). In this work, we parallel the birational lifting already done for order-ideal rowmotion to antichain rowmotion. We give explicit equivariant bijections between the birational toggle groups and between their respective liftings. We further extend all of these notions to labellings by noncommutative rational functions, setting an unpublished periodicity conjecture of Grinberg in a broader context.

Minuscule doppelgängers, the coincidental down-degree expectations property, and rowmotion
Published in Experimental Mathematics, 31(3), 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We relate Reiner, Tenner, and Yong's coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) property of posets to the minuscule doppelgänger pairs studied by Hamaker, Patrias, Pechenik, and Williams. Via this relation, we put forward a series of conjectures which suggest that the minuscule doppelgänger pairs behave "as if" they had isomorphic comparability graphs, even though they do not. We further explore the idea of minuscule doppelgänger pairs pretending to have isomorphic comparability graphs by considering the rowmotion operator on order ideals. We conjecture that the members of a minuscule doppelgänger pair behave the same way under rowmotion, as they would if they had isomorphic comparability graphs. Moreover, we conjecture that these pairs continue to behave the same way under the piecewise-linear and birational liftings of rowmotion introduced by Einstein and Propp. This conjecture motivates us to study the homomesies (in the sense of Propp and Roby) exhibited by birational rowmotion. We establish the birational analog of the antichain cardinality homomesy for the major examples of posets known or conjectured to have finite birational rowmotion order (namely: minuscule posets and root posets of coincidental type).
