The CDE property for skew vexillary permutations

We prove a conjecture of Reiner, Tenner, and Yong which says that the initial weak order intervals corresponding to certain vexillary permutations have the coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) property. Actually our theorem applies more generally to certain "skew vexillary" permutations (a notion we introduce), and shows that these posets are in fact "toggle CDE." As a corollary we obtain a homomesy result for rowmotion acting on semidistributive lattices in the sense of Barnard and of Thomas and Williams.
Paths to Understanding Birational Rowmotion on Products of Two Chains

Birational rowmotion is an action on the space of assignments of rational functions to the elements of a finite partially-ordered set (poset). It is lifted from the well-studied rowmotion map on order ideals (equivariantly on antichains) of a poset $P$, which when iterated on special posets, has unexpectedly nice properties in terms of periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy (statistics whose averages over each orbit are constant) [AST11, BW74, CF95, Pan09, PR13, RuSh12,RuWa15+,SW12, ThWi17, Yil17. In this context, rowmotion appears to be related to Auslander-Reiten translation on certain quivers, and birational rowmotion to $Y$-systems of type $A_m \times A_n$ described in Zamolodchikov periodicity.
We give a formula in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths for iterated actions of the birational rowmotion map on a product of two chains. This allows us to give a much simpler direct proof of the key fact that the period of this map on a product of chains of lengths $r$ and $s$ is $r+s+2$ (first proved by D.~Grinberg and the second author), as well as the first proof of the birational analogue of homomesy along files for such posets.

This paper analyzes a certain action called "whirling" that can be defined on any family of functions between two finite sets equipped with a linear (or cyclic) ordering. Many maps of interest in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, such as rowmotion of order ideals, can be represented as a composition of "toggling" involutions, each of which modifies its object only locally. Similarly whirling is made up of locally-acting whirling maps which directly generalize toggles, but cycle through more than two possible outputs. In this first paper on whirling, we consider it as a map on subfamilies of functions between finite sets.
For whirling acting on the set of injections or the set of surjections, we prove that within each whirling orbit, any two elements of the codomain appear as outputs of functions the same number of times. This result can be stated in terms of the homomesy phenomenon, which occurs when a statistic has the same average across every orbit. We further explore homomesy results and conjectures for whirling on restricted-growth words, which correspond to set partitions. These results extend the collection of combinatorial objects for which we have interesting dynamics and homomesy, and open the door to considering whirling in other contexts.
Homomesy in products of three chains and multidimensional recombination

J. Propp and T. Roby isolated a phenomenon in which a statistic on a set has the same average value over any orbit as its global average, naming it homomesy. They proved that the cardinality statistic on order ideals of the product of two chains poset under rowmotion exhibits homomesy. In this paper, we prove an analogous result in the case of the product of three chains where one chain has two elements. In order to prove this result, we generalize from two to $n$ dimensions the recombination technique that D. Einstein and Propp developed to study homomesy. We see that our main homomesy result does not fully generalize to an arbitrary product of three chains, nor to larger products of chains; however, we have a partial generalization to an arbitrary product of three chains. Additional corollaries include refined homomesy results in the product of three chains and a new result on increasing tableaux. We conclude with a generalization of recombination to any ranked poset and a homomesy result for the Type B minuscule poset cross a two element chain.
Promotion of increasing tableaux: frames and homomesies

A key fact about M.-P. Schützenberger's (1972) promotion operator on rectangular standard Young tableaux is that iterating promotion once per entry recovers the original tableau. For tableaux with strictly increasing rows and columns, H. Thomas and A. Yong (2009) introduced a theory of $K$-jeu de taquin with applications to $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus. The author (2014) studied a $K$-promotion operator $\mathcal{P}$ derived from this theory, but showed that the key fact does not generally extend to $K$-promotion of such increasing tableaux.
Here we show that the key fact holds for labels on the boundary of the rectangle. That is, for $T$ a rectanglar increasing tableau with entries bounded by $q$, we have $\mathsf{Frame}(\mathcal{P}^q(T)) = \mathsf{Frame}(T)$, where $\mathsf{Frame}(U)$ denotes the restriction of $U$ to its first and last row and column. Using this fact, we obtain a family of homomesy results on the average value of certain statistics over $K$-promotion orbits, extending a $2$-row theorem of J. Bloom, D. Saracino, and the author (2016) to arbitrary rectangular shapes.

This paper explores the orbit structure and homomesy (constant averages over orbits) properties of certain actions of toggle groups on the collection of independent sets of a path graph. In particular we prove a generalization of a homomesy conjecture of Propp that for the action of a "Coxeter element" of vertex toggles, the difference of indicator functions of symmetrically-located vertices is 0-mesic. Then we use our analysis to show facts about orbit sizes that are easy to conjecture but nontrivial to prove. Besides its intrinsic interest, this particular combinatorial dynamical system is valuable in providing an interesting example of (a) homomesy in a context where large orbit sizes make a cyclic sieving phenomenon unlikely to exist, (b) the use of Coxeter theory to greatly generalize the set of actions for which results hold, and (c) the usefulness of Striker's notion of generalized toggle groups.
The CDE property for minuscule lattices

Reiner, Tenner, and Yong recently introduced the coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) property for finite posets and showed that many nice posets are CDE. In this paper we further explore the CDE property, resolving a number of conjectures about CDE posets put forth by Reiner-Tenner-Yong. A consequence of our work is the completion of a case-by-case proof that any minuscule lattice is CDE. We also explain two major applications of the study of CDE posets: formulas for certain classes of set-valued tableaux; and homomesy results for rowmotion and gyration acting on sets of order ideals.
Orbits of antichains in certain root posets

This paper gives another proof of Propp and Roby's theorem saying that the average antichain size in any reverse operator orbit of the poset $[m]\times [n]$ is $\frac{mn}{m+n}$. It is conceivable that our method should work for other situations. As a demonstration, we show that the average size of antichains in any reverse operator orbit of $[m]\times K_{n-1}$ equals $\frac{2mn}{m+2n-1}$. Here $K_{n-1}$ is the minuscule poset $[n-1]\oplus ([1] \sqcup [1]) \oplus [n-1]$. Note that $[m]\times [n]$ and $[m]\times K_{n-1}$ can be interpreted as sub-families of certain root posets. We guess these root posets should provide a unified setting to exhibit the homomesy phenomenon defined by Propp and Roby.
Noncrossing partitions, toggles, and homomesies

We introduce $n(n-1)/2$ natural involutions ("toggles") on the set $S$ of noncrossing partitions $π$ of size $n$, along with certain composite operations obtained by composing these involutions. We show that for many operations $T$ of this kind, a surprisingly large family of functions $f$ on $S$ (including the function that sends $π$ to the number of blocks of $π$) exhibits the homomesy phenomenon: the average of $f$ over the elements of a $T$-orbit is the same for all $T$-orbits. We can apply our method of proof more broadly to toggle operations back on the collection of independent sets of certain graphs. We utilize this generalization to prove a theorem about toggling on a family of graphs called "$2$-cliquish". More generally, the philosophy of this "toggle-action", proposed by Striker, is a popular topic of current and future research in dynamic algebraic combinatorics.
On Orbits of Order Ideals of Minuscule Posets II: Homomesy
The Fon-Der-Flaass action partitions the order ideals of a poset into disjoint orbits. For a product of two chains, Propp and Roby observed --- across orbits --- the mean cardinality of the order ideals within an orbit to be invariant. That this phenomenon, which they christened homomesy, extends to all minuscule posets is shown herein.
Given a minuscule poset $P$, there exists a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a representation $V$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ such that the lattice of order ideals of $P$ coincides with the weight lattice of $V$. For a weight $μ$ with corresponding order ideal $I$, it is demonstrated that the behavior of the Weyl group simple reflections on $μ$ not only uniquely determines $μ$, but also encodes the cardinality of $I$. After recourse to work of Rush and Shi mapping the anatomy of the lattice isomorphism, the upshot is a uniform proof that the cardinality statistic exhibits homomesy.
A further application of these ideas shows that the statistic tracking the number of maximal elements in an order ideal is also homomesic, extending another result of Propp and Roby.
Braid moves in commutation classes of the symmetric group

We prove that the expected number of braid moves in the commutation class of the reduced word $(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-1})(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-2}) \cdots (s_1 s_2)(s_1)$ for the long element in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is one. This is a variant of a similar result by V. Reiner, who proved that the expected number of braid moves in a random reduced word for the long element is one. The proof is bijective and uses X. Viennot's theory of heaps and variants of the promotion operator. In addition, we provide a refinement of this result on orbits under the action of even and odd promotion operators. This gives an example of a homomesy for a nonabelian (dihedral) group that is not induced by an abelian subgroup. Our techniques extend to more general posets and to other statistics.
The expected jaggedness of order ideals

The jaggedness of an order ideal I in a poset P is the number of maximal elements in I plus the number of minimal elements of P not in I. A probability distribution on the set of order ideals of P is toggle-symmetric if for every p in P, the probability that p is maximal in I equals the probability that p is minimal not in I. In this paper, we prove a formula for the expected jaggedness of an order ideal of P under any toggle-symmetric probability distribution when P is the poset of boxes in a skew Young diagram. Our result extends the main combinatorial theorem of Chan-López-Pflueger-Teixidor, who used an expected jaggedness computation as a key ingredient to prove an algebro-geometric formula; and it has applications to homomesies, in the sense of Propp-Roby, of the antichain cardinality statistic for order ideals in partially ordered sets.
The toggle group, homomesy, and the Razumov-Stroganov correspondence

The Razumov-Stroganov correspondence, an important link between statistical physics and combinatorics proved in 2011 by L. Cantini and A. Sportiello, relates the ground state eigenvector of the O(1) dense loop model on a semi-infinite cylinder to a refined enumeration of fully-packed loops, which are in bijection with alternating sign matrices. This paper reformulates a key component of this proof in terms of posets, the toggle group, and homomesy, and proves two new homomesy results on general posets which we hope will have broader implications.
Some Instances of Homomesy Among Ideals of Posets

Given a permutation $τ$ defined on a set of combinatorial objects $S$, together with some statistic $f:S\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, we say that the triple $\langle S, τ,f \rangle$ exhibits homomesy if $f$ has the same average along all orbits of $τ$ in $S$. This phenomenon was noticed by Panyushev (2007) and later studied, named and extended by Propp and Roby (2013). After Propp and Roby's paper, homomesy has received a lot of attention and a number of mathematicians are intrigued by it. While seeming ubiquitous, homomesy is often surprisingly non-trivial to prove. Propp and Roby studied homomesy in the set of ideals in the product of two chains, with two well known permutations, rowmotion and promotion, the statistic being the size of the ideal. In this paper we extend their results to generalized rowmotion and promotion together with a wider class of statistics in product of two chains .
Moreover, we derive some homomesy results in posets of type A and B. We believe that the framework that we set up can be used to prove similar results in wider classes of posets.
A note on statistical averages for oscillating tableaux

We define a statistic called the weight of oscillating tableaux. Oscillating tableaux, a generalization of standard Young tableaux, are certain walks in Young's lattice of partitions. The weight of an oscillating tableau is the sum of the sizes of all the partitions that it visits. We show that the average weight of all oscillating tableaux of shape lambda and length 2n plus the size of lambda has a surprisingly simple formula: it is a quadratic polynomial in the size of lambda and n. Our proof via the theory of differential posets is largely computational. We suggest how the homomesy paradigm of Propp and Roby may lead to a more conceptual proof of this result and reveal a hidden symmetry in the set of perfect matchings.
Piecewise-linear and birational toggling

We define piecewise-linear and birational analogues of the toggle-involutions on order ideals of posets studied by Striker and Williams and use them to define corresponding analogues of rowmotion and promotion that share many of the properties of combinatorial rowmotion and promotion. Piecewise-linear rowmotion (like birational rowmotion) admits an alternative definition related to Stanley's transfer map for the order polytope; piecewise-linear promotion relates to Schützenberger promotion for semistandard Young tableaux. The three settings for these dynamical systems (combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational) are intimately related: the piecewise-linear operations arise as tropicalizations of the birational operations, and the combinatorial operations arise as restrictions of the piecewise-linear operations to the vertex-set of the order polytope. In the case where the poset is of the form $[a] \times [b]$, we exploit a reciprocal symmetry property recently proved by Grinberg and Roby to show that birational rowmotion (and consequently piecewise-linear rowmotion) is of order $a+b$. This yields a new proof of a theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass. Our proofs make use of the correspondence between rowmotion and promotion orbits discovered by Striker and Williams, which we make more concrete. We also prove some homomesy results, showing that for certain functions $f$, the average value of $f$ over each rowmotion/promotion orbit is independent of the orbit chosen.
Combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational homomesy for products of two chains

This article illustrates the dynamical concept of $homomesy$ in three kinds of dynamical systems -- combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational -- and shows the relationship between these three settings. In particular, we show how the rowmotion and promotion operations of Striker and Williams can be lifted to (continuous) piecewise-linear operations on the order polytope of Stanley, and then lifted to birational operations on the positive orthant in $\mathbb{R}^{|P|}$ and indeed to a dense subset of $\mathbb{C}^{|P|}$. When the poset $P$ is a product of a chain of length $a$ and a chain of length $b$, these lifted operations have order $a+b$, and exhibit the homomesy phenomenon: the time-averages of various quantities are the same in all orbits. One important tool is a concrete realization of the conjugacy between rowmotion and promotion found by Striker and Williams; this $recombination$ $map$ allows us to use homomesy for promotion to deduce homomesy for rowmotion.
NOTE: An earlier draft showed that Stanley's transfer map between the order polytope and the chain polytope arises as the tropicalization of an analogous map in the bilinear realm; in 2020 we removed this material for the sake of brevity, especially after Joseph and Roby generalized our proof to the noncommutative realm (see arXiv:1909.09658v3). Readers who nonetheless wish to see our proof can find the September 2018 draft of this preprint through the arXiv.
Homomesy in products of two chains

Many invertible actions $τ$ on a set ${\mathcal{S}}$ of combinatorial objects, along with a natural statistic $f$ on ${\mathcal{S}}$, exhibit the following property which we dub \textbf{homomesy}: the average of $f$ over each $τ$-orbit in ${\mathcal{S}}$ is the same as the average of $f$ over the whole set ${\mathcal{S}}$. This phenomenon was first noticed by Panyushev in 2007 in the context of the rowmotion action on the set of antichains of a root poset; Armstrong, Stump, and Thomas proved Panyushev's conjecture in 2011. We describe a theoretical framework for results of this kind that applies more broadly, giving examples in a variety of contexts. These include linear actions on vector spaces, sandpile dynamics, Suter's action on certain subposets of Young's Lattice, Lyness 5-cycles, promotion of rectangular semi-standard Young tableaux, and the rowmotion and promotion actions on certain posets. We give a detailed description of the latter situation for products of two chains.
Proofs and generalizations of a homomesy conjecture of Propp and Roby

Let $G$ be a group acting on a set $X$ of combinatorial objects, with finite orbits, and consider a statistic $ξ: X \to \mathbb{C}$. Propp and Roby defined the triple $(X, G, ξ)$ to be \emph{homomesic} if for any orbits $\mathcal{O}_1, \mathcal{O}_2$, the average value of the statistic $ξ$ is the same, that is \[\frac{1}{{|\mathcal{O}_1|}}\sum_{x \in \mathcal{O}_1} ξ(x) = \frac{1}{|\mathcal{O}_2|}\sum_{y \in \mathcal{O}_2} ξ(y).\]
In 2013 Propp and Roby conjectured the following instance of homomesy. Let $\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$ denote the set of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $m \times n$ with entries bounded by $k$. Let $S$ be any set of boxes in the $m \times n$ rectangle fixed under $180^\circ$ rotation. For $T \in \mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$, define $σ_S(T)$ to be the sum of the entries of $T$ in the boxes of $S$. Let $\langle \mathcal{P} \rangle$ be a cyclic group of order $k$ where $\mathcal{P}$ acts on $\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$ by promotion. Then $(\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n), \langle \mathcal{P} \rangle, σ_S)$ is homomesic.
We prove this conjecture, as well as a generalization to cominuscule posets. We also discuss analogous questions for tableaux with strictly increasing rows and columns under the K-promotion of Thomas and Yong, and prove limited results in that direction.
