A recursion formula for Branching from $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras
For any representation of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, one problem of branching rules to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-subalgebra is to determine the multiplicity of each irreducible component. In this paper, we derive a recursion formula of such multiplicities by restricting a certain tensor representation in two ways, in which the Pieri's rule is involved. We also investigate branching rules for fundamental representations as they are initial conditions of the recursion formula.

Branching rules of minuscule representations via a new partial order
We introduce a new partial order on the set of all antichains of a fixed size in any poset. When applied to minuscule posets, these partial orders give rise to distributive lattices that appear in the branching rules for minuscule representations of complex simple Lie algebras.

Crystal Pop-Stack Sorting and Type A Crystal Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ and a dominant weight $λ$, let $\mathcal B_λ$ be the crystal poset associated to the irreducible representation of $\mathfrak g$ with highest weight $λ$. In the first part of the article, we introduce the \emph{crystal pop-stack sorting operator} $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}\colon\mathcal B_λ\to\mathcal B_λ$, a noninvertible operator whose definition extends that of the pop-stack sorting map and the recently-introduced Coxeter pop-stack sorting operators. Every forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$ contains the minimal element of $\mathcal B_λ$, which is fixed by $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$. We prove that the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$ is the Coxeter number of the Weyl group of $\mathfrak g$. In the second part of the article, we characterize exactly when a type $A$ crystal is a lattice.

Orbital varieties in types $B$ and $C$
We correct the proof of the main result of an earlier paper, parametrizing orbital varieties in a complex simple Lie algebra of type $B$ or $C$ in terms of domino tableaux and showing how to compute the orbital variety attached to an element of the Weyl group in either of these types.

Strange Expectations and the Winnie-the-Pooh Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the study of simultaneous cores, we give three proofs (in varying levels of generality) for the expected norm of a weight in a highest weight representation of a complex simple Lie algebra. First, we argue directly using the polynomial method and the Weyl character formula. Second, we use the combinatorics of semistandard tableaux to obtain the result in type A. Third, and most interestingly, we relate this problem to the "Winnie-the-Pooh problem" regarding orthogonal decompositions of Lie algebras; although this approach offers the most explanatory power, it applies only to Cartan types other than A and C. We conclude with computations of many combinatorial cumulants.

On Order Ideals of Minuscule Posets III: The CDE Property
Recent work of Hopkins establishes that the lattice of order ideals of a minuscule poset satisfies the coincidental down-degree expectations property of Reiner, Tenner, and Yong. His approach appeals to the classification of minuscule posets. A uniform proof is presented herein. The blueprint follows that of Rush and Wang in their uniform proof that various cardinality statistics are homomesic on orbits of order ideals of minuscule posets under the Fon-Der-Flaass action. The underpinning remains the original insight of Rush and Shi into the structure of the isomorphism between the weight lattice of a minuscule representation of a complex simple Lie algebra and the lattice of order ideals of the corresponding minuscule poset.

Linear recurrence relations in $Q$-systems via lattice points in polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the sequence of the characters of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) modules $W_{m}^{(a)}, m\in \mathbb{Z}_{m\geq 0}$ associated to a node $a$ of the Dynkin diagram of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation except for some cases in types $E_7$ and $E_8$. To this end we use the $Q$-system and the existing lattice point summation formula for the decomposition of KR modules, known as domino removal rules when $\mathfrak{g}$ is of classical type. As an application, we show how to reduce some unproven lattice point summation formulas in exceptional types to finite problems in linear algebra and also give a new proof of them in type $G_2$, which is the only completely proven case when KR modules have an irreducible summand with multiplicity greater than 1. We also apply the recurrence to prove that the function $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ is a quasipolynomial in $m$ and establish its properties. We conjecture that there exists a rational polytope such that its Ehrhart quasipolynomial in $m$ is $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ and the lattice points of its $m$-th dilate carry the same crystal structure as the crystal associated with $W_{m}^{(a)}$.

On Orbits of Order Ideals of Minuscule Posets II: Homomesy
The Fon-Der-Flaass action partitions the order ideals of a poset into disjoint orbits. For a product of two chains, Propp and Roby observed --- across orbits --- the mean cardinality of the order ideals within an orbit to be invariant. That this phenomenon, which they christened homomesy, extends to all minuscule posets is shown herein. Given a minuscule poset $P$, there exists a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a representation $V$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ such that the lattice of order ideals of $P$ coincides with the weight lattice of $V$. For a weight $μ$ with corresponding order ideal $I$, it is demonstrated that the behavior of the Weyl group simple reflections on $μ$ not only uniquely determines $μ$, but also encodes the cardinality of $I$. After recourse to work of Rush and Shi mapping the anatomy of the lattice isomorphism, the upshot is a uniform proof that the cardinality statistic exhibits homomesy. A further application of these ideas shows that the statistic tracking the number of maximal elements in an order ideal is also homomesic, extending another result of Propp and Roby.

Fusion products and toroidal algebras
Published in Pacific J. Math. 278 (2015) 427-445 • View PublicationBIB
We study the category of finite--dimensional bi--graded representations of toroidal current algebras associated to finite--dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. Using the theory of graded representations for current algebras, we construct in different ways objects in that category and prove them to be isomorphic. As a consequence we obtain generators and relations for certain types of fusion products including the $N$--fold fusion product of $V(λ)$. This result shows that the fusion product of these types is independent of the chosen parameters, proving a special case of a conjecture by Feigin and Loktev. Moreover, we prove a conjecture by Chari, Fourier and Sagaki on truncated Weyl modules for certain classes of dominant integral weights and show that they are realizable as fusion products. In the last section we consider the case $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and compute a PBW type basis for truncated Weyl modules of the associated current algebra.

On Orbits of Order Ideals of Minuscule Posets
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 37 (2013), 545-569 • View PublicationBIB
An action on order ideals of posets considered by Fon-Der-Flaass is analyzed in the case of posets arising from minuscule representations of complex simple Lie algebras. For these minuscule posets, it is shown that the Fon-Der-Flaass action exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, as defined by Reiner, Stanton, and White. A uniform proof is given by investigation of a bijection due to Stembridge between order ideals of minuscule posets and fully commutative Weyl group elements. This bijection is proven to be equivariant with respect to a conjugate of the Fon-Der-Flaass action and an arbitrary Coxeter element. If $P$ is a minuscule poset, it is shown that the Fon-Der-Flaass action on order ideals of the Cartesian product $P \times [2]$ also exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, only the proof is by appeal to the classification of minuscule posets and is not uniform.

The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.

Ad-nilpotent Ideals and Equivalence Relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study ad-nilpotent ideals of a complex simple Lie algebra $\ccg$ and their connections with affine Weyl groups and nilpotent orbits. We define a left equivalence relation for ad-nilpotent ideals based on their normalizer and generators, and prove that the equivalence relation is compatible with the left cell structure of affine Weyl group of $\ccg$ and Lusztig's star operator for type $\tilde A_{n-1}$.

Alcove walks, buildings, symmetric functions and representations
For a complex simple Lie algebra, the dimension $K_{λμ}$ of the $μ$ weight space of a finite dimensional representation of highest weight $λ$ is the same as the number of Littelmann paths of type $λ$ and weight $μ$. In this paper we give an explicit construction of a path of type $λ$ and weight $μ$ whenever $K_{λμ}\ne 0$. This construction has additional consequences, it produces an explicit point in the building which chamber retracts to $λ$ and sector retracts to $μ$, and an explicit point of the affine Grassmannian in the corresponding Mirković-Vilonen intersection. In an appendix we discuss the connection between retractions in buildings and alcove walks.
Bernstein-Szego Polynomials Associated with Root Systems
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. 39 (2007), 837-847 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce multivariate generalizations of the Bernstein-Szego polynomials, which are associated to the root systems of the complex simple Lie algebras. The multivariate polynomials in question generalize Macdonald's Hall-Littlewood polynomials associated with root systems. For the root system of type A1 (corresponding to the Lie algebra SL (2;C)) the classic Bernstein-Szego polynomials are recovered.

The numbers game, geometric representations of Coxeter groups, and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game has been studied previously by Proctor, Mozes, Bjorner, Eriksson, and Wildberger. We show that those connected such graphs for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. As a consequence of our proof we obtain the classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras and of the finite Weyl groups. We use Coxeter group theory to establish a more general result that applies to Eriksson's E-games: an E-game meets the finiteness requirement if and only if a naturally associated Coxeter group is finite. To prove this and some other finiteness results we further develop Eriksson's theory of a geometric representation of Coxeter groups and observe some curious differences of this representation from the standard geometric representation.

A note on exponents vs root heights for complex simple Lie algebras

We give an elementary combinatorial proof of a special case of a result due to Bazlov and Ion concerning the Fourier coefficients of the Cherednik kernel. This can be used to give yet another proof of the classical fact that for a complex simple Lie algebra, the partition formed by its exponents is dual to that formed by the numbers of positive roots at each height.

Normalizers of ad-nilpotent ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.
