Tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties
This paper provides a rigorous study of tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties. We give applications beyond tropical geometry, to the cohomology of moduli spaces as well as to the cohomology of arithmetic groups. We study two cases in detail: the case of level structures on the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_{g}$ of abelian varieties, and the special unitary case.
Piecewise-exponential functions and Ehrhart fans
This paper studies rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions on rational fans. Motivated by lattice-point counting in polytopes, we introduce a special class of unimodular fans called Ehrhart fans, whose rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions admit a canonical linear functional that behaves like a lattice-point count. In particular, we verify that all complete unimodular fans are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional agrees with lattice-point counting in corresponding polytopes, which can otherwise be interpreted as holomorphic Euler characteristics of vector bundles on smooth toric varieties. We also prove that all Bergman fans of matroids are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional in this case agrees with the Euler characteristic of matroids, introduced recently by Larson, Li, Payne, and Proudfoot. A key property that we prove about the Ehrharticity of fans is that it only depends on the support of the fan, not on the fan structure, thus providing a uniform framework for studying K-rings and Euler characteristics of complete fans and Bergman fans simultaneously.

On the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$
For $g\ge 2$ and $n\ge 0$, let $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}\subset \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ denote the complex moduli stack of $n$-marked smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. A normal crossings compactification of this space is provided by the theory of pointed admissible $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-covers. We explicitly determine the resulting dual complex, and we use this to define a graph complex which computes the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. Using this graph complex, we give a sum-over-graphs formula for the $S_n$-equivariant weight zero compactly supported Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. This formula allows for the computer-aided calculation, for each $g\le 7$, of the generating function $\mathsf{h}_g$ for these equivariant Euler characteristics for all $n$. More generally, we determine the dual complex of the boundary in any moduli space of pointed admissible $G$-covers of genus zero curves, when $G$ is abelian, as a symmetric $Δ$-complex. We use these complexes to generalize our formula for $\mathsf{h}_g$ to moduli spaces of $n$-pointed smooth abelian covers of genus zero curves.

A Serre spectral sequence for the moduli space of tropical curves
We construct, for all $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 0$, a spectral sequence of rational $S_n$-representations which computes the $S_n$-equivariant reduced rational cohomology of the tropical moduli spaces of curves $Δ_{g,n}$ in terms of compactly supported cohomology groups of configuration spaces of $n$ points on graphs of genus $g$. Using the canonical $S_n$-equivariant isomorphisms $\widetilde{H}^{i-1}(Δ_{g,n};\mathbb{Q}) \cong W_0 H^i_c(\mathcal{M}_{g,n};\mathbb{Q})$, we calculate the weight $0$, compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the range $g=3$ and $n\leq 9$, with partial computations available for $n\leq 13$.

Homology representations of compactified configurations on graphs applied to $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain new calculations of the top weight rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$, equivalently the rational homology of the tropical moduli spaces $Δ_{2,n}$, as a representation of $S_n$. These calculations are achieved fully for all $n\leq 10$, and partially -- for specific irreducible representations of $S_n$ -- for $n\le 22$. We also present conjectures, verified up to $n=22$, for the multiplicities of the irreducible representations $\mathrm{std}_n$ and $\mathrm{std}_n\otimes \mathrm{sgn}_n$. We achieve our calculations via a comparison with the homology of compactified configuration spaces of graphs. These homology groups are equipped with commuting actions of a symmetric group and the outer automorphism group of a free group. In this paper, we construct an efficient free resolution for these homology representations, from which we extract calculations on irreducible representations one at a time, simplifying the calculation of these homology representations.
On the Top-Weight Rational Cohomology of $A_g$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_g$ for $g=5$, $6$, and $7$, and we give some vanishing results for the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_8, A_9,$ and $ A_{10}$. When $g=5$ and $g=7$, we exhibit nonzero cohomology groups of $A_g$ in odd degree, thus answering a question highlighted by Grushevsky. Our methods develop the relationship between the top-weight cohomology of $A_g$ and the homology of the link of the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties of rank $g$. To compute the latter we use the Voronoi complexes used by Elbaz-Vincent-Gangl-Soulé. Our computations give natural candidates for compactly supported cohomology classes of $A_g$ in weight $0$ that produce the stable cohomology classes of the Satake compactification of $A_g$ in weight $0$, under the Gysin spectral sequence for the latter space.

Combinatorial relations on skew Schur and skew stable Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of skew Young diagrams in terms of skew Schur functions, using a new row insertion algorithm for set-valued semistandard tableaux of skew shape. This expansion unifies some previous results: it generalizes a combinatorial formula obtained in earlier joint work with López Martín and Teixidor i Bigas concerning Brill-Noether curves, and it generalizes a 2000 formula of Lenart and a recent result of Reiner-Tenner-Yong to skew shapes. We also give an expansion in the other direction: expressing skew Schur functions in terms of skew Grothendieck polynomials.

Euler characteristics of Brill-Noether varieties
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 374 (2021), 1513-1533 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an enumerative formula for the algebraic Euler characteristic of Brill-Noether varieties, parametrizing degree d and rank r linear series on a general genus g curve, with ramification profiles specified at up to two general points. Up to sign, this Euler characteristic is the number of standard set-valued tableaux of a certain skew shape with g labels. We use a flat degeneration via the Eisenbud-Harris theory of limit linear series, relying on moduli-theoretic advances of Osserman and Murray-Osserman; the count of set-valued tableaux is an explicit enumeration of strata of this degeneration.

The tropicalization of the moduli space of curves II: Topology and applications
We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group.

Topology of the tropical moduli spaces $M_{2,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the topology of the link $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ of the tropical moduli spaces of curves when g=2. Tropical moduli spaces can be identified with boundary complexes for $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, as shown by Abramovich-Caporaso-Payne, so their reduced rational homology encodes top-weight rational cohomology of the complex moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. We prove that $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{2,n}[1]$ is an $n$-connected topological space whose reduced integral homology is supported in the top two degrees only. We compute the reduced Euler characteristic of $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ for all n, and we compute the rational homology of $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{2,n}[1]$ when $n \le 8$, determining completely the top-weight $\mathbb{Q}$-cohomology of $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$ in that range.
The expected jaggedness of order ideals
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 5, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
The jaggedness of an order ideal I in a poset P is the number of maximal elements in I plus the number of minimal elements of P not in I. A probability distribution on the set of order ideals of P is toggle-symmetric if for every p in P, the probability that p is maximal in I equals the probability that p is minimal not in I. In this paper, we prove a formula for the expected jaggedness of an order ideal of P under any toggle-symmetric probability distribution when P is the poset of boxes in a skew Young diagram. Our result extends the main combinatorial theorem of Chan-López-Pflueger-Teixidor, who used an expected jaggedness computation as a key ingredient to prove an algebro-geometric formula; and it has applications to homomesies, in the sense of Propp-Roby, of the antichain cardinality statistic for order ideals in partially ordered sets.
Genera of Brill-Noether curves and staircase paths in Young tableaux
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 370 (2018), no. 5, 3405-3439 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute the genus of the variety of linear series of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a general curve of genus $g$, with ramification at least $α$ and $β$ at two given points, when that variety is 1-dimensional. Our proof uses degenerations and limit linear series along with an analysis of random staircase paths in Young tableaux, and produces an explicit scheme-theoretic description of the limit linear series of fixed rank and degree on a generic chain of elliptic curves when that scheme is itself a curve.

Theta characteristics of tropical $K_4$-curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $K_4$-curve is a smooth, proper curve X of genus 3 over a nonarchimedean field whose Berkovich skeleton $Γ$ is a complete graph on 4 vertices. The curve X has 28 effective theta characteristics, i.e. the 28 bitangents to a canonical embedding, while $Γ$ has exactly seven tropical theta characteristics, as shown by Zharkov. We prove that the 28 effective theta characteristics of a $K_4$-curve specialize to the theta characteristics of its minimal skeleton in seven groups of four.
Sandpiles, spanning trees, and plane duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a connected, loopless multigraph. The sandpile group of G is a finite abelian group associated to G whose order is equal to the number of spanning trees in G. Holroyd et al. used a dynamical process on graphs called rotor-routing to define a simply transitive action of the sandpile group of G on its set of spanning trees. Their definition depends on two pieces of auxiliary data: a choice of a ribbon graph structure on G, and a choice of a root vertex. Chan, Church, and Grochow showed that if G is a planar ribbon graph, it has a canonical rotor-routing action associated to it, i.e., the rotor-routing action is actually independent of the choice of root vertex. It is well-known that the spanning trees of a planar graph G are in canonical bijection with those of its planar dual G*, and furthermore that the sandpile groups of G and G* are isomorphic. Thus, one can ask: are the two rotor-routing actions, of the sandpile group of G on its spanning trees, and of the sandpile group of G* on its spanning trees, compatible under plane duality? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question, which had been conjectured by Baker.

Rotor-routing and spanning trees on planar graphs
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2015 (2015) 11, 3225-3244 • View PublicationBIB
The sandpile group Pic^0(G) of a finite graph G is a discrete analogue of the Jacobian of a Riemann surface which was rediscovered several times in the contexts of arithmetic geometry, self-organized criticality, random walks, and algorithms. Given a ribbon graph G, Holroyd et al. used the "rotor-routing" model to define a free and transitive action of Pic^0(G) on the set of spanning trees of G. However, their construction depends a priori on a choice of basepoint vertex. Ellenberg asked whether this action does in fact depend on the choice of basepoint. We answer this question by proving that the action of Pic^0(G) is independent of the basepoint if and only if G is a planar ribbon graph.

Tropical Teichmuller and Siegel spaces
Published in Algebraic and Combinatorial Aspects of Tropical Geometry, Contemp. Math. 589 (2013), 45--85 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a unified study of the moduli space of tropical curves and Outer space which we link via period maps to the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties and the space of positive definite quadratic forms. Our work is a first step towards exhibiting Outer space and the space of positive definite quadratic forms as analogues of Teichmüller space and Siegel space, respectively, in tropical geometry. All these spaces and the maps among them are described within the category of ideal stacky fans, which we describe in detail.

Elliptic curves in honeycomb form
Published • View PublicationBIB
A plane cubic curve, defined over a field with valuation, is in honeycomb form if its tropicalization exhibits the standard hexagonal cycle. We explicitly compute such representations from a given j-invariant with negative valuation, we give an analytic characterization of elliptic curves in honeycomb form, and we offer a detailed analysis of the tropical group law on such a curve.

Tropical hyperelliptic curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the locus of tropical hyperelliptic curves inside the moduli space of tropical curves of genus g. We define a harmonic morphism of metric graphs and prove that a metric graph is hyperelliptic if and only if it admits a harmonic morphism of degree 2 to a metric tree. This generalizes the work of Baker and Norine on combinatorial graphs to the metric case. We then prove that the locus of 2-edge-connected genus g tropical hyperelliptic curves is a (2g-1)-dimensional stacky polyhedral fan whose maximal cells are in bijection with trees on g-1 vertices with maximum valence 3. Finally, we show that the Berkovich skeleton of a classical hyperelliptic plane curve satisfying a certain tropical smoothness condition lies in a maximal cell of genus g called a standard ladder.

Combinatorics of the tropical Torelli map
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a combinatorial and computational study of the moduli space of tropical curves of genus g, the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties, and the tropical Torelli map. These objects were introduced recently by Brannetti, Melo, and Viviani. Here, we give a new definition of the category of stacky fans, of which the aforementioned moduli spaces are objects and the Torelli map is a morphism. We compute the poset of cells of tropical M_g and of the tropical Schottky locus for genus at most 5. We show that tropical A_g is Hausdorff, and we also construct a finite-index cover for A_3 which satisfies a tropical-type balancing condition. Many different combinatorial objects, including regular matroids, positive semidefinite forms, and metric graphs, play a role.

The 4x4 minors of a 5xn matrix are a tropical basis
We compute the space of 5x5 matrices of tropical rank at most 3 and show that it coincides with the space of 5x5 matrices of Kapranov rank at most 3, that is, the space of five labeled coplanar points in TP4. We then prove that the Kapranov rank of every 5xn matrix equals its tropical rank; equivalently, that the 4x4 minors of a 5xn matrix of variables form a tropical basis. This answers a question asked by Develin, Santos, and Sturmfels.
