On Eigenvalue Bounds for Bounded Genus Graphs and Minor-Free Graphs
In this paper, we resolve a 30-year-old conjecture of Spielman and Teng concerning the performance of the spectral partitioning method on graphs embeddable on an orientable surface of genus $g$. In particular, for such a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$, we show that the second-smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix satisfies $λ_2(L_G)\lesssimΔ\frac g n$. We also obtain an improved eigenvalue bound for $K_h$-minor-free graphs of $λ_2(L_G)\lesssimΔ\frac{h^2(\log h)^2}n$. In fact, our results directly prove much stronger results for reweighted eigenvalues, including higher reweighted eigenvalues. As a consequence, we obtain bounds not just on Laplacian eigenvalues, but also on normalized Laplacian eigenvalues and Steklov eigenvalues. Our results for genus-$g$ graphs are optimal for all of these kinds of eigenvalues, while our results for $K_h$-minor-free graphs are optimal up to $\log(h)$ factors. Our techniques for genus-$g$ graphs bootstrap bounded-degree bounds of normalized eigenvalues for entire classes to bounds for reweighted eigenvalues for the same classes without the bounded-degree limitation, while our techniques for $K_h$-minor-free graphs generalize an argument of Korhonen and Lokshtanov, making use of the Lovász local lemma.

On the Asymptotic Normality and Unimodality of Genus Distributions of Wheels
The genus polynomial of a graph is the generating polynomial for the number of nonequivalent embeddings of the graph on each orientable surface. In this paper, we address three questions on genus polynomials for wheel graphs: the computation of genus polynomials, the unimodality and the asymptotic normality of their coefficients. We derive an explicit formula for the genus polynomial of wheel graphs by combining methods of the joint tree model and characters theory, and then prove its real-rootedness. This stronger result implies the log-concavity, unimodality, and asymptotic normality of its coefficients. Thus, we confirm the unimodality conjecture for the genus distribution of wheel graphs and provide a positive answer to the asymptotic normality question posed by Zhang, Peng, and Chen (\emph{Adv. in Appl. Math.} \textbf{127} (2021), 102175).
The number of Pfaffian orientations on punctured polygonally cellulated surfaces
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Pfaffian orientations on (punctured) polygonally cellulated orientable surfaces, and provide an expression for the number of such orientations. This generalizes the notion of Pfaffian orientations on planar graph, where a planar graph is seen as a punctured $2$-sphere, embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$. So, as a direct corollary of our main theorem, we derive the number of Pfaffian orientations on a planar graph.

Exponential Lower Bounds for the Pfaffian Number of Graphs
Galluccio--Loebl and Tesler showed that the perfect-matching polynomial of a graph embedded in an orientable surface of genus $g$ can be written as a linear combination of at most $4^g$ Pfaffians. We show that, in general, exponentially many Pfaffians are necessary. More precisely, among all graphs of orientable genus at most $g$, the maximum possible Pfaffian number is at least $(8/3)^g$. This lower bound holds even for connected matching-covered graphs. We also obtain exponential lower bounds for the Pfaffian number of complete bipartite graphs, and hence for even complete graphs, improving asymptotically on a recent linear lower bound of Junchaya, Lucchesi, and Miranda.

The complexity of pinning simple multiloops
A multiloop with $s\in \mathbb{N}$ strands is a generic immersion $γ\colon \sqcup_1^s \mathbb{S}^1 \looparrowright Σ$ of the union of $s$ circles into a surface $Σ$, considered up to homeomorphisms. A pinning set of $γ$ is a set of points $P\subset Σ\setminus \operatorname{im}(γ)$, such that in the punctured surface $Σ\setminus P$, the immersion $γ$ has the minimal number of double points in its homotopy class. Its pinning number $\varpi(γ)$ is the minimum cardinal of its pinning sets. In any fixed orientable surface $Σ$, the pinning problem which given a multiloop $γ$ and $k\in \mathbb{N}$ decides whether $\varpi(γ)\le k$ has been show to be NP-complete, even in restrictions to loops (with $s=1$ strand). In this work we study the complexity of the pinning problem in restriction to multiloops whose strands are simple (embedded circles). We show that in any fixed oriented surface $Σ$, the problem is in P when $s\leq 3$ and NP-complete when $s\geq 20$, and present some follow-up questions and conjectures.

Markov chains of $Z$-oriented triangulations of surfaces
We consider triangulations of closed $2$-dimensional (not necessarily orientable) surfaces. Any minimal set of zigzags that double covers the set of edges provides a $z$-orientation of the triangulation. We introduce Markov chains of $z$-oriented triangulations. Our main result is a characterization of their ergodicity. This topic is closely connected to coloring of Eulerian triangulations.

Maximal Green Sequences for Cluster Algebras Associated to Closed Orbifolds
It is known that the existence of a maximal green sequence for a quiver associated to surfaces is equivalent to the equality of the cluster algebra and upper cluster algebra generated by the quiver. This paper makes the first steps in investigating this behavior in the generalised case of cluster algebras from orbifolds; determining when such surfaces admit a diagram with a maximal green sequence. Specifically, we will provide a triangulation for the orientable surfaces of genus $n$ with an arbitrary number of orbifold points and arbitrary number of punctures, determine when it has a maximal green sequence, and construct one if it exists.
On 3-Connected Planar Graphs with Unique Orientable Circuit Double Covers
A circuit double cover of a bridgeless graph is a collection of even subgraphs such that every edge is contained in exactly two subgraphs of the given collection. Such a circuit double cover describes an embedding of the corresponding graph onto a surface. In this paper, we investigate the well-known Orientable Strong Embedding Conjecture. This conjecture proposes that every bridgeless graph has a circuit double cover describing an embedding on an orientable surface. In a recent paper, we have proved that a 3-connected cubic planar graph G has exactly one orientable circuit double cover if and only if G is the dual graph of an Apollonian network. In this paper, we extend this result by demonstrating that this characterisation applies to any 3-connected planar graph, regardless of whether it is cubic.

Absolute incidence theorems and tilings
We give a precise definition of incidence theorems in plane projective geometry and introduce the notion of ``absolute incidence theorems,'' which hold over any ring. Fomin and Pylyavskyy describe how to obtain incidence theorems from tilings of an orientable surface; they call this result the ``master theorem''. Instances of the master theorem are always absolute incidence theorems. As most classically known incidence theorems are instances of the master theorem, they are absolute incidence theorems. We give an explicit example of an incidence theorem involving 13 points that is not an absolute incidence theorem, and therefore is not an instance of the master theorem.
On 3-Connected Cubic Planar Graphs and their Strong Embeddings on Orientable Surfaces
Although the strong embedding of a 3-connected planar graph $G$ on the sphere is unique, $G$ can have different inequivalent strong embeddings on a surface of positive genus. If $G$ is cubic, then the strong embeddings of $G$ on the projective plane, the torus and the Klein bottle each are in one-to-one correspondence with certain subgraphs of the dual graph $G^\ast$. Here, we exploit this characterisation and show that two strong embeddings of $G$ on the projective plane, the torus or the Klein bottle are isomorphic if and only if the corresponding subgraphs of $G^{\ast}$ are contained in the same orbit under $\mathrm{Aut}(G^{\ast})$. This allows us to construct a data base containing all isomorphism classes of strong embeddings on the projective plane, the torus and the Klein bottle of all 3-connected cubic planar graphs with up to 22 vertices. Moreover, we establish that cyclically 4-edge connected cubic planar graphs can be strongly embedded on orientable surfaces of positive genera. We use this to show that a 3-connected cubic planar graph has no strong embedding on orientable surfaces of positive genera if and only if it is the dual of an Apollonian network.

Embeddings of the line graphs associated with the essential graphs of commutative rings
Let $A$ be a finite commutative ring with unity $1 \neq 0.$ An ideal of $A$ is said to be essential if it has a non-zero intersection with every non-zero ideal of $A.$ The essential graph of $A$ is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set consists of all non-zero zero-divisors of $A.$ Two different vertices $u$ and $v$ are connected by an edge precisely when the ideal formed by the annihilator of their product $uv$ is essential in $A.$ This paper examines the minimal embeddings of the line graph of the essential graph of $A$ into orientable surfaces as well as non-orientable surfaces. Our results include a complete classification of finite commutative rings for which the line graphs of their essential graphs is planar, outerplanar or have genus or crosscap number at most two. We also characterize all such non-local rings for which the line graph of their zero-divisor graph is outerplanar.

Non-orientable regular hypermaps of arbitrary hyperbolic type
One of the consequences of residual finiteness of triangle groups is that for any given hyperbolic triple $(\ell,m,n)$ there exist infinitely many regular hypermaps of type $(\ell,m,n)$ on compact orientable surfaces. The same conclusion also follows from a classification of those finite quotients of hyperbolic triangle groups that are isomorphic to linear fractional groups over finite fields. A non-orientable analogue of this, that is, existence of regular hypermaps of a given hyperbolic type on {\em non-orientable} compact surfaces, appears to have been proved only for {\em maps}, which arise when one of the parameters $\ell,m,n$ is equal to $2$. In this paper we establish a non-orientable version of the above statement in full generality by proving the following much stronger assertion: for every hyperbolic triple $(\ell,m,n)$ there exists an infinite set of primes $p$ of positive Dirichlet density, such that (i) there exists a regular hypermap $\mathcal{H}$ of type $(\ell,m,n)$ on a compact non-orientable surface such that the automorphism group of $\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to $\PSL(2,p)$, and, moreover, (ii) the carrier compact surface of {\em every} regular hypermap of type $(\ell,m,n)$ with rotation group isomorphic to $\PSL(2,p)$ is necessarily non-orientable.

From arcs to curves: quadratic growth of 1-systems
We show that the largest size of a collection of simple closed curves pairwise intersecting at most once on an orientable surface of Euler characteristic $χ$ grows quadratically in $|χ|$. This resolves a longstanding question of Farb-Leininger, up to multiplicative constants. Inspired by the work of Przytycki in the setting of arcs, we introduce the concepts of \textit{almost nibs}, \textit{flowers}, and \textit{stem systems} in order to account for how certain polygons built from pairs of curves in the collection distribute their area over the surface.

Embedding a Praeger-Xu graph into a surface
Rotary maps (orientably regular maps) are highly symmetric graph embeddings on orientable surfaces. This paper classifies all rotary maps whose underlying graphs are Praeger-Xu graphs, denoted $\operatorname{C}(p,r,s)$, for any odd prime $p$ that does not divide $r$. Our main result establishes a one-to-one correspondence between the isomorphism classes of these maps and the multiplicity-free representations of the dihedral group $\operatorname{D}_{2r}$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$. This work extends a recent classification for the case where $p=2$.
Thrackles on nonplanar surfaces
A thrackle is a drawing of a graph on a surface such that (i) adjacent edges only intersect at their common vertex; and (ii) nonadjacent edges intersect at exactly one point, at which they cross. Conway conjectured that if a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges can be thrackled on the plane, then $m\le n$. Conway's conjecture remains open; the best bound known is that $m\le 1.393n$. Cairns and Nikolayevsky extended this conjecture to the orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g > 0$, claiming that if a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges has a thrackle on $S_g$, then $m \le n + 2g$. We disprove this conjecture. In stark contrast with the planar case, we show that for each $g>0$ there is a connected graph with $n$ vertices and $2n + 2g -8$ edges that can be thrackled on $S_g$. This leaves relatively little room for further progress involving thrackles on orientable surfaces, as every connected graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges that can be thrackled on $S_g$ satisfies that $m \le 2n + 4g - 2$. We prove a similar result for nonorientable surfaces. We also derive nontrivial upper and lower bounds on the minimum $g$ such that $K_{m,n}$ and $K_n$ can be thrackled on $S_g$.

Minimal Simplicial Degree $d$ Maps from Genus $g$ Surfaces to the Torus
The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a fundamental concept in topology, offering deep insights into the structure of the manifolds and the nature of the corresponding maps. This concept has been extensively studied, particularly in the context of simplicial maps between orientable triangulable spaces. In 1982, Gromov proved that if degree $d$ maps exist from a genus $g$ orientable surface to a genus $h$ orientable surface for every $d \in \mathbb{Z}$, then $h$ must be 0 or 1. Recently, degree $d$ self-maps on spheres, particularly on genus 0 surfaces, have been investigated. In this paper, we focus on the unique minimal 7-vertex triangulation of the torus. We construct simplicial degree $d$ maps from a triangulation of a genus $g$ surface to the 7-vertex triangulation of the torus for $g \geq 1$. Our construction of degree $d$ maps is minimal for every $d$ when $g = 1,2$. If $g \geq 3$, then our construction remains minimal for $|d| \geq 2g - 1$. We believe that this concept will be highly useful in combinatorial topology, as it leads to several intriguing open research problems. In the final section, we propose some of these open research problems.

Crossing number inequalities for curves on surfaces
We prove that, as $m$ grows, any family of $m$ homotopically distinct closed curves on a surface induces a number of crossings that grows at least like $(m \log m)^2$. We use this to answer two questions of Pach, Tardos and Toth related to crossing numbers of drawings of multigraphs where edges are required to be non-homotopic. Furthermore, we generalize these results, obtaining effective bounds with optimal growth rates on every orientable surface.
An infinite family of simple graphs underlying chiral, orientable reflexible and non-orientable rotary maps
In this paper, we provide the first known infinite family of simple graphs, each of which is the skeleton of a chiral map, a skeleton of a reflexible map on an orientable surfaces, as well as a skeleton of a reflexible map on a non-orientable surface. This family consists of all lexicographic product $C_n[mK_1]$, where $m\ge 3$, $n = sm$, with $s$ an integer not divisible by $4$. This answers a question posed in [S.\ Wilson, Families of regular graphs in regular maps, {\em Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B} 85 (2002), 269--289].

On relative simple Heffter spaces
In this paper, we introduce the concept of a relative Heffter space which simultaneously generalizes those of relative Heffter arrays and Heffter spaces. Given a subgroup $J$ of an abelian group $G$, a relative Heffter space is a resolvable configuration whose points form a half-set of $G\setminus{J}$ and whose blocks are all zero-sum in $G$. Here we present two infinite families of relative Heffter spaces satisfying the additional condition of being simple. As a consequence, we get new results on globally simple relative Heffter arrays, on mutually orthogonal cycle decompositions and on biembeddings of cyclic cycle decompositions of the complete multipartite graph into an orientable surface.

The Jacobian of a regular orthogonal matroid and torsor structures on spanning quasi-trees of ribbon graphs
Previous work of Chan--Church--Grochow and Baker--Wang shows that the set of spanning trees in a plane graph $G$ is naturally a torsor for the Jacobian group of $G$. Informally, this means that the set of spanning trees of $G$ naturally forms a group, except that there is no distinguished identity element. We generalize this fact to graphs embedded on orientable surfaces of arbitrary genus, which can be identified with ribbon graphs. In this generalization, the set of spanning trees of $G$ is replaced by the set of spanning quasi-trees of the ribbon graph, and the Jacobian group of $G$ is replaced by the Jacobian group of the associated regular orthogonal matroid $M$ (along with an associated regular representation of $M$). Our proof shows, more generally, that the family of "BBY torsors" constructed by Backman--Baker--Yuen and later generalized by Ding admit natural generalizations to (regular representations of) regular orthogonal matroids. In addition to shedding light on the role of planarity in the earlier work mentioned above, our results represent one of the first substantial applications of orthogonal matroids (also called "even delta-matroids" or "Lagrangian orthogonal matroids") to a natural combinatorial problem about graphs.
