The enumeration of maps and the study of uniform random maps have been classical topics of combinatorics and statistical physics ever since the seminal work of Tutte in the sixties. Following the bijective approach initiated by Cori and Vauquelin in the eighties, we describe a bijection between rooted maps, or rooted bipartite quadrangulations, on a surface of genus g and some simpler objects that generalize plane trees. Thanks to a rerooting argument, our bijection allows to compute the generating series of rooted maps on a surface of genus g with respect to the number of edges, and to recover the asymptotic numbers of such maps.
Our construction allows to keep track in a bipartite quadrangulation of the distances of all vertices to a random basepoint. This is an analog for higher genus surfaces of the basic result on which were built the recent advances in the comprehension of the intrinsec geometry of large random planar maps, hopefully opening the way to the study of a model of continuum random surfaces of genus g.
Graphs on Surfaces and the Partition Function of String Theory
Graphs on surfaces is an active topic of pure mathematics belonging to graph theory. It has also been applied to physics and relates discrete and continuous mathematics. In this paper we present a formal mathematical description of the relation between graph theory and the mathematical physics of discrete string theory. In this description we present problems of the combinatorial world of real importance for graph theorists. The mathematical details of the paper are as follows: There is a combinatorial description of the partition function of bosonic string theory. In this combinatorial description the string world sheet is thought as simplicial and it is considered as a combinatorial graph. It can also be said that we have embeddings of graphs in closed surfaces. The discrete partition function which results from this procedure gives a sum over triangulations of closed surfaces. This is known as the vacuum partition function. The precise calculation of the partition function depends on combinatorial calculations involving counting all non-isomorphic triangulations and all spanning trees of a graph. The exact computation of the partition function turns out to be very complicated, however we show the exact expressions for its computation for the case of any closed orientable surface. We present a clear computation for the sphere and the way it is done for the torus, and for the non-orientable case of the projective plane.

A Cayley map is a 2-cell embedding of a Cayley graph into an orientable surface with the same local orientation induced by a cyclic permutation of generators at each vertex. In this paper, we provide classifications of prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups, dihedral groups and dicyclic groups. Consequently, we show that all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on dihedral groups are balanced and all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups are either balanced or anti-balanced. Furthermore, we prove that there is no prime-valent regular Cayley map on any dicyclic group.

We present a fast enumeration algorithm for combinatorial 2- and 3-manifolds. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 11 and 12 vertices and all triangulated 3-manifolds with 11 vertices. We further determine all equivelar polyhedral maps on the non-orientable surface of genus 4 as well as all equivelar triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 3 and the non-orientable surfaces of genus 5 and 6.
Surface realization with the intersection edge functional
Deciding realizability of a given polyhedral map on a (compact, connected) surface belongs to the hard problems in discrete geometry, from the theoretical, the algorithmic, and the practical point of view.
In this paper, we present a heuristic algorithm for the realization of simplicial maps, based on the intersection edge functional. The heuristic was used to find geometric realizations in R^3 for all vertex-minimal triangulations of the orientable surfaces of genus g=3 and g=4. Moreover, for the first time, examples of simplicial polyhedra in R^3 of genus 5 with 12 vertices were obtained.
Irreducible triangulations of low genus surfaces
The complete sets of irreducible triangulations are known for the orientable surfaces with genus of 0, 1, or 2 and for the nonorientable surfaces with genus of 1, 2, 3, or 4. By examining these sets we determine some of the properties of these irreducible triangulations.

For a graph G embedded in an orientable surface Σ, we consider associated links L(G) in the thickened surface Σ\times I. We relate the HOMFLY polynomial of L(G) to the recently defined Bollobas-Riordan polynomial of a ribbon graph. This generalizes celebrated results of Jaeger and Traldi. We use knot theory to prove results about graph polynomials and, after discussing questions of equivalence of the polynomials, we go on to use our formulae to prove a duality relation for the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial. We then consider the specialization to the Jones polynomial and recent results of Chmutov and Pak to relate the Bollobas-Riordan polynomials of an embedded graph and its tensor product with a cycle.
Polyhedra of genus 3 with 10 vertices and minimal coordinates
We give coordinate-minimal geometric realizations in general position for 17 of the 20 vertex-minimal triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 3 in the 5x5x5-cube.

An arrangement of pseudocircles is a finite set of oriented closed Jordan curves each two of which cross each other in exactly two points. To describe the combinatorial structure of arrangements on closed orientable surfaces, in (Linhart, Ortner 2004) so-called *intersection schemes* were introduced. Building up on results about the latter, we first clarify the notion of embedding of an arrangement. Once this is done it is shown how the embeddability of an arrangement depends on the embeddability of its subarrangements. The main result presented is that an arrangement of pseudocircles can be embedded into the sphere if and only if all of its subarrangements of four pseudocircles are embeddable into the sphere as well.
Polyhedra of genus 2 with 10 vertices and minimal coordinates
We give coordinate-minimal geometric realizations in general position of all 865 vertex-minimal triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 2 in the 4x4x4-cube.

We discuss different approaches for the enumeration of triangulated surfaces. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 9 and 10 vertices. We also show how geometric realizations of orientable surfaces with few vertices can be obtained by choosing coordinates randomly.
Lagrangian Matroids associated with Maps on Orientable Surfaces
The aim of the paper is to clarify the nature of combinatorial structures associated with maps on closed compact surfaces. We prove that maps give rise to Lagrangian matroids representable in a setting provided by cohomology of the surface with punctured points. Our proof is very elementary.
We further observe that the greedy algorithm has a natural interpretation in this setting, as a `peeling' procedure which cuts the (connected) surface into a closed ring-shaped peel, and that this procedure is local.
