Contractions and applications of crystal skeletons: Young quasisymmetric and Stanley symmetric functions
The character of a connected $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-crystal is a Schur polynomial; the crystal can be further decomposed into quasicrystals, whose characters are the Gessel quasisymmetric functions. Crystal skeletons are obtained by contracting quasicrystals within crystal graphs. They generalize dual equivalence graphs, and can be used to prove the Schur expansion of a symmetric function when the quasisymmetric expansion is known. In this paper, we show that the crystal skeleton can be tiled further into components which we call quasicrystal skeletons, whose characters are Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We characterize which edges in the crystal skeleton move between quasicrystal skeleton components. Contracting the quasicrystal skeleton components yields Bruhat order. We illustrate how these tools can be applied to symmetric functions by analyzing the Stanley symmetric functions.

Uncrowding the 5-Vertex Model: RSK and Crystal Structures
While the uncrowding algorithm on set-valued tableaux has long been instrumental in proving the Schur positivity of stable symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, lattice models have emerged as a modern framework for investigating symmetric functions, in particular symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In this work, we synthesize these combinatorial and lattice-theoretic approaches by defining both the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence and the uncrowding operation directly on a 5-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai and its subsequent reinterpretation by Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber. Our lattice-based RSK formulation yields a powerful new result: the direct construction of the associated crystal structure on the states of the 5-vertex model.
$q$-deformations of the Tsetlin library
The Tsetlin library is a random shuffling process on permutations of $n$ letters, where each letter $i$ can be interpreted as a book; book $i$ is brought to the front of the bookshelf with an assigned probability $x_i$. We define a $q$-deformation of the Tsetlin library by replacing the symmetric group action on permutations by the action of the type $A$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra. We compute the stationary distribution and spectrum of this Markov chain by relating it to a Markov chain on complete flags over the finite field vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and applying techniques from semigroup theory. We also generalize the $q$-Tsetlin library to words (with repeated letters), and compute its stationary distribution and spectrum.
A geometric and generating function approach to plethysm
Plethysm coefficients $\mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λ$ are the structure coefficients of the plethysm of Schur functions $s_μ[s_ν] = \sum_λ \mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λs_λ$. We study a bivariate generating function of plethysm coefficients when $λ$ has bounded length. We show that this generating function is rational. A key step is MacMahon's combinatory analysis. When the bound on the length is $2$ we give an explicit geometric algorithm to compute it using $q$-Ehrhart theory. We give evidence that the generating function is the quantum Ehrhart series of a union of half-open polytopes and show that it satisfies a reciprocity theorem reminiscent of Ehrhart reciprocity. Furthermore, we give a set of linear recursions that completely describe the $\mathrm{SL}_2$-plethysm coefficients.
Crystal skeletons: Combinatorics and axioms
Crystal skeletons were introduced by Maas-Gariépy in 2023 by contracting quasi-crystal components in a crystal graph. On the representation theoretic level, crystal skeletons model the expansion of Schur functions into Gessel's quasisymmetric functions. Motivated by questions of Schur positivity, we provide a combinatorial description of crystal skeletons, and prove many new properties, including a conjecture by Maas-Gariépy that crystal skeletons generalize dual equivalence graphs. We then present a new axiomatic approach to crystal skeletons. We give three versions of the axioms based on $GL_n$-branching, $S_n$-branching, and local axioms in analogy to the local Stembridge axioms for crystals based on novel commutation relations.
Hook-valued tableau uncrowding and tableau switching
Refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials were introduced by Hwang, Jang, Kim, Song, and Song. There exist two combinatorial models for these polynomials: one using hook-valued tableaux and the other using pairs of a semistandard Young tableau and (what we call) an exquisite tableau. An uncrowding algorithm on hook-valued tableaux was introduced by Pan, Pappe, Poh, and Schilling. In this paper, we discover a novel connection between the two models via the uncrowding and Goulden--Greene's jeu de taquin algorithms, using a classical result of Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer on tableau switching. This connection reveals a symmetry of the uncrowding algorithm defined on hook-valued tableaux. As a corollary, we obtain another combinatorial model for the refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of biflagged tableaux, which naturally appear in the characterization of the image of the uncrowding map.
The lattice of submonoids of the uniform block permutations containing the symmetric group
Published in Semigroup Forum (2025) • View PublicationBIB
We study the lattice of submonoids of the uniform block permutation monoid containing the symmetric group (which is its group of units). We prove that this lattice is distributive under union and intersection by relating the submonoids containing the symmetric group to downsets in a new partial order on integer partitions. Furthermore, we show that the sizes of the $\mathscr{J}$-classes of the uniform block permutation monoid are sums of squares of dimensions of irreducible modules of the monoid algebra.
The immersion poset on partitions
Published in J. Alg. Combinatorics 61, 21 (2025) 61, 21 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the immersion poset $(\mathcal{P}(n), \leqslant_I)$ on partitions, defined by $λ\leqslant_I μ$ if and only if $s_μ(x_1, \ldots, x_N) - s_λ(x_1, \ldots, x_N)$ is monomial-positive. Relations in the immersion poset determine when irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_N(\mathbb{C})$ form an immersion pair, as defined by Prasad and Raghunathan (2022). We develop injections $\mathsf{SSYT}(λ, ν) \hookrightarrow \mathsf{SSYT}(μ, ν)$ on semistandard Young tableaux given constraints on the shape of $λ$, and present results on immersion relations among hook and two column partitions. The standard immersion poset $(\mathcal{P}(n), \leqslant_{std})$ is a refinement of the immersion poset, defined by $λ\leqslant_{std} μ$ if and only if $λ\leqslant_D μ$ in dominance order and $f^λ\leqslant f^μ$, where $f^ν$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $ν$. We classify maximal elements of certain shapes in the standard immersion poset using the hook length formula. Finally, we prove Schur-positivity of power sum symmetric functions $p_{A_μ}$ on conjectured lower intervals in the immersion poset, addressing questions posed by Sundaram (2018).
From quasi-symmetric to Schur expansions with applications to symmetric chain decompositions and plethysm
Published in Electronic J. Comb. 31(4) (2024) #P4.23 • View PublicationBIB
It is an important problem in algebraic combinatorics to deduce the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function whose expansion in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric function is known. For example, formulas are known for the fundamental expansion of a Macdonald symmetric function and for the plethysm of two Schur functions, while the Schur expansions of these expressions are still elusive. Egge, Loehr and Warrington provided a method to obtain the Schur expansion from the fundamental expansion by replacing each quasisymmetric function by a Schur function (not necessarily indexed by a partition) and using straightening rules to obtain the Schur expansion. Here we provide a new method that only involves the coefficients of the quasisymmetric functions indexed by partitions and the quasi-Kostka matrix. As an application, we identify the lexicographically largest term in the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. We provide the Schur expansion of $s_w[s_h](x,y)$ for $w=2,3,4$ using novel symmetric chain decompositions of Young's lattice for partitions in a $w\times h$ box. For $w=4$, this is first known combinatorial expression for the coefficient of $s_λ$ in $s_{w}[s_{h}]$ for two-row partitions $λ$, and for $w=3$ the combinatorial expression is new.

Dimension of splines on graphs in the case of degree two and smoothness one in two variables
Continuous spline functions are defined as piecewise polynomials on the faces of a polyhedral complex that agree on the intersections of two faces. Splines are used in approximation theory and numerical analysis, with applications in data interpolation, to create smooth curves in computer graphics and to find numerical solutions to partial differential equations. Gilbert, Tymoczko, and Viel generalized the classical splines combinatorially and algebraically: a generalized spline is a vertex labeling of a graph $G$ by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the ideal generated by the corresponding edge label. We study the generalized splines on the planar graphs whose edges are labeled by two-variable polynomials of the form $(ax+by+c)^2$ and whose vertices are labeled by polynomials of degree at most two. In this paper we address the upper-bound conjecture for the dimension of degree-2 splines of smoothness 1. The dimension is expressed in terms of the rank of the extended cycle basis matrix. We also provide a combinatorial algorithm on graphs to compute the rank by contracting certain subgraphs.
Promotion and growth diagrams for fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux
Published in J. Algebra 655 (2024) 1, 794-842 • View PublicationBIB
We construct an injection from the set of $r$-fans of Dyck paths (resp. vacillating tableaux) of length $n$ into the set of chord diagrams on $[n]$ that intertwines promotion and rotation. This is done in two different ways, namely as fillings of promotion-evacuation diagrams and in terms of Fomin growth diagrams. Our analysis uses the fact that $r$-fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux can be viewed as highest weight elements of weight zero in crystals of type $B_r$ and $C_r$, respectively, which in turn can be analyzed using virtual crystals. On the level of Fomin growth diagrams, the virtualization process corresponds to the Roby-Krattenthaler blow up construction. One of the motivations for finding rotation invariant diagrammatic bases such as chord diagrams is the cyclic sieving phenomenon. Indeed, we give a cyclic sieving phenomenon on $r$-fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux using the promotion action.
The mystery of plethysm coefficients
Published in Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics (PSPUM) 110 (2024), 275-292 • View PublicationBIB
Composing two representations of the general linear groups gives rise to Littlewood's (outer) plethysm. On the level of characters, this poses the question of finding the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. A combinatorial interpretation for the Schur expansion coefficients of the plethysm of two Schur functions is, in general, still an open problem. We identify a proof technique of combinatorial representation theory, which we call the "$s$-perp trick", and point out several examples in the literature where this idea is used. We use the $s$-perp trick to give algorithms for computing monomial and Schur expansions of symmetric functions. In several special cases, these algorithms are more efficient than those currently implemented in {\sc SageMath}.

The Burge correspondence and crystal graphs
Published in European J. Comb. 108 (2023) 103640 • View PublicationBIB
The Burge correspondence yields a bijection between simple labelled graphs and semistandard Young tableaux of threshold shape. We characterize the simple graphs of hook shape by peak and valley conditions on Burge arrays. This is the first step towards an analogue of Schensted's result for the RSK insertion which states that the length of the longest increasing subword of a word is the length of the largest row of the tableau under the RSK correspondence. Furthermore, we give a crystal structure on simple graphs of hook shape. The extremal vectors in this crystal are precisely the simple graphs whose degree sequence are threshold and hook-shaped.
Plethysm and the algebra of uniform block permutations

We study the representation theory of the uniform block permutation algebra in the context of the representation theory of factorizable inverse monoids. The uniform block permutation algebra is a subalgebra of the partition algebra and is also known as the party algebra. We compute its characters and provide a Frobenius characteristic map to symmetric functions. This reveals connections of the characters of the uniform block permutation algebra and plethysms of Schur functions.

An area-depth symmetric $q,t$-Catalan polynomial
Published in Electronic J. Comb. 29(2) (2022), #P2.13 • View PublicationBIB
We define two symmetric $q,t$-Catalan polynomials in terms of the area and depth statistic and in terms of the dinv and dinv of depth statistics. We prove symmetry using an involution on plane trees. The same involution proves symmetry of the Tutte polynomials. We also provide a combinatorial proof of a remark by Garsia et al. regarding parking functions and the number of connected graphs on a fixed number of vertices.

Uncrowding algorithm for hook-valued tableaux
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 26 (2022), 261-301 • View PublicationBIB
Whereas set-valued tableaux are the combinatorial objects associated to stable Grothendieck polynomials, hook-valued tableaux are associated to stable canonical Grothendieck polynomials. In this paper, we define a novel uncrowding algorithm for hook-valued tableaux. The algorithm "uncrowds" the entries in the arm of the hooks and yields a set-valued tableau and a column-flagged increasing tableau. We prove that our uncrowding algorithm intertwines with crystal operators. An alternative uncrowding algorithm that "uncrowds" the entries in the leg instead of the arm of the hooks is also given. As an application of uncrowding, we obtain various expansions of the canonical Grothendieck polynomials.

Upper bounds on mixing time of finite Markov chains
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 36, Iss. 4 (2022), 3031-3057 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a general framework for computing upper bounds on mixing times of finite Markov chains when its minimal ideal is left zero. Our analysis is based on combining results by Brown and Diaconis with our previous work on stationary distributions of finite Markov chains. Stationary distributions can be computed from the Karnofsky--Rhodes and McCammond expansion of the right Cayley graph of the finite semigroup underlying the Markov chain. Using loop graphs, which are planar graphs consisting of a straight line with attached loops, there are rational expressions for the stationary distribution in the probabilities. From these we obtain bounds on the mixing time. In addition, we provide a new Markov chain on linear extension of a poset with $n$ vertices, inspired by but different from the promotion Markov chain of Ayyer, Klee and the last author. The mixing time of this Markov chain is $O(n \log n)$.
A crystal on decreasing factorizations in the $0$-Hecke monoid
Published in Electronic J. Comb. 27(2) (2020), #P2.29 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a type $A$ crystal structure on decreasing factorizations of fully-commutative elements in the 0-Hecke monoid which we call $\star$-crystal. This crystal is a $K$-theoretic generalization of the crystal on decreasing factorizations in the symmetric group of the first and last author. We prove that under the residue map the $\star$-crystal intertwines with the crystal on set-valued tableaux recently introduced by Monical, Pechenik and Scrimshaw. We also define a new insertion from decreasing factorization to pairs of semistandard Young tableaux and prove several properties, such as its relation to the Hecke insertion and the uncrowding algorithm. The new insertion also intertwines with the crystal operators.
Generalized $q,t$-Catalan numbers
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 3(4) (2020) 855-886 • View PublicationBIB
Recent work of the first author, Negut and Rasmussen, and of Oblomkov and Rozansky in the context of Khovanov--Rozansky knot homology produces a family of polynomials in $q$ and $t$ labeled by integer sequences. These polynomials can be expressed as equivariant Euler characteristics of certain line bundles on flag Hilbert schemes. The $q,t$-Catalan numbers and their rational analogues are special cases of this construction. In this paper, we give a purely combinatorial treatment of these polynomials and show that in many cases they have nonnegative integer coefficients. For sequences of length at most 4, we prove that these coefficients enumerate subdiagrams in a certain fixed Young diagram and give an explicit symmetric chain decomposition of the set of such diagrams. This strengthens results of Lee, Li and Loehr for $(4,n)$ rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers.
An insertion algorithm on multiset partitions with applications to diagram algebras
Published in J. Algebra 557 no. 1, (2020), 97-128 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset tableau of content $[k]$. We also obtain an algorithm from partition diagrams to pairs of a standard tableau and a standard multiset tableau of the same shape, which has the remarkable property that it is well-behaved with respect to restricting a representation to a subalgebra. This insertion algorithm matches recent representation-theoretic results of Halverson and Jacobson.
