Contractions and applications of crystal skeletons: Young quasisymmetric and Stanley symmetric functions
The character of a connected $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-crystal is a Schur polynomial; the crystal can be further decomposed into quasicrystals, whose characters are the Gessel quasisymmetric functions. Crystal skeletons are obtained by contracting quasicrystals within crystal graphs. They generalize dual equivalence graphs, and can be used to prove the Schur expansion of a symmetric function when the quasisymmetric expansion is known. In this paper, we show that the crystal skeleton can be tiled further into components which we call quasicrystal skeletons, whose characters are Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We characterize which edges in the crystal skeleton move between quasicrystal skeleton components. Contracting the quasicrystal skeleton components yields Bruhat order. We illustrate how these tools can be applied to symmetric functions by analyzing the Stanley symmetric functions.
The orientifold Temperley--Lieb algebra
We construct gradings on the simple modules of 2-boundary Temperley--Lieb algebras and symplectic blob algebras by realising the latter algebras as quotients of Varagnolo--Vasserot's orientifold quiver Hecke algebras. We prove that the symplectic blob algebras are graded cellular and provide a conjectural algorithm for calculating their graded decomposition matrices. In doing so, we give the first explicit family of finite-dimensional graded quotients of the orientifold quiver Hecke algebras, providing a new entry point for the structure of these algebras -- in the spirit of Libedinsky--Plaza's ``blob algebra approach'' to modular representation theory.
Crystal skeletons: Combinatorics and axioms
Crystal skeletons were introduced by Maas-Gariépy in 2023 by contracting quasi-crystal components in a crystal graph. On the representation theoretic level, crystal skeletons model the expansion of Schur functions into Gessel's quasisymmetric functions. Motivated by questions of Schur positivity, we provide a combinatorial description of crystal skeletons, and prove many new properties, including a conjecture by Maas-Gariépy that crystal skeletons generalize dual equivalence graphs. We then present a new axiomatic approach to crystal skeletons. We give three versions of the axioms based on $GL_n$-branching, $S_n$-branching, and local axioms in analogy to the local Stembridge axioms for crystals based on novel commutation relations.
Set-valued tableaux for Macdonald polynomials
Set-valued tableaux formulas play an important role in Schubert calculus. Using the box greedy reduced word for the construction of the Macdonald polynomials, we convert the alcove walk formula for Macdonald polynomials to a set-valued tableaux formula for Macdonald polynomials. Our hope is that providing set-valued tableaux formulas for Macdonald polynomials will help to strengthen the analogies and possible connections between the calculus of Macdonald polynomials and Schubert calculus.

The two boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra $TL_k$ arises in the transfer matrix formulation of lattice models in Statistical Mechanics, in particular in the introduction of integrable boundary terms to the six-vertex model. In this paper, we classify and study the calibrated representations---those for which all the Murphy elements (integrals) are simultaneously diagonalizable---which, in turn, corresponds to diagonalizing the transfer matrix in the associated model. Our approach is founded upon the realization of $TL_k$ as a quotient of the type $C_k$ affine Hecke algebra $H_k$. In previous work, we studied this Hecke algebra via its presentation by braid diagrams, tensor space operators, and related combinatorial constructions. That work is directly applied herein to give a combinatorial classification and construction of all irreducible calibrated $TL_k$-modules and explain how these modules also arise from a Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group $U_q\mathfrak{gl}_2$.
Two boundary Hecke Algebras and combinatorics of type C

This paper gives a Schur-Weyl duality approach to the representation theory of the affine Hecke algebras of type C with unequal parameters. The first step is to realize the affine braid group of type $C_k$ as the group of braids on $k$ strands with two poles. Generalizing familiar methods from the one pole (type A) case, this provides commuting actions of the quantum group $U_q\mathfrak{g}$ and the affine braid group of type $C_k$ on a tensor space $M\otimes N \otimes V^{\otimes k}$. Special cases provide Schur-Weyl pairings between the affine Hecke algebra of type $C_k$ and the quantum group of type $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, resulting in natural labelings of many representations of the affine Hecke algebras of type C by partitions. Following an analysis of the structure of weights of affine Hecke algebra representations (extending the one parameter case to the three parameter case necessary for affine Hecke algebras of type C), we provide an explicit identification of the affine Hecke algebra representations that appear in tensor space (essentially by identifying their Langlands parameters).
Quasisymmetric Power Sums

In the 1995 paper entitled "Noncommutative symmetric functions," Gelfand, et. al. defined two noncommutative symmetric function analogues for the power sum basis of the symmetric functions, along with analogues for the elementary and the homogeneous bases. They did not consider the noncommutative symmetric power sum duals in the quasisymmetric functions, which have since been explored only in passing by Derksen and Malvenuto-Reutenauer. These two distinct quasisymmetric power sum bases are the topic of this paper. In contrast to the simplicity of the symmetric power sums, or the other well known bases of the quasisymmetric functions, the quasisymmetric power sums have a more complex combinatorial description. As a result, although symmetric function proofs often translate directly to quasisymmetric analogues, this is not the case for quasisymmetric power sums. Neither is there a model for working with the quasisymmetric power sums in the work of Gelfand, et. al., which relies heavily on quasi-determinants (which can only be exploited by duality for our purposes) and is not particularly combinatorial in nature. This paper therefore offers a first glimpse at working with these two relatively unstudied quasisymmetric bases, avoiding duality where possible to encourage a previously unexplored combinatorial understanding.
Centralizers of the infinite symmetric group

We review and introduce several approaches to the study of centralizer algebras of the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our study is led by the double commutant relationships between finite symmetric groups and partition algebras; each approach produces a centralizer algebra that is contained in a partition algebra. Our goal is to incorporate invariants of $S_\infty$, which ties our work to the study of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables. We resultantly explore sequence spaces as permutation modules, which yields families of non-unitary representations of $S_\infty$.

We introduce the quasi-partition algebra $QP_k(n)$ as a centralizer algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is a subalgebra of the partition algebra and inherits many similar combinatorial properties. We construct a basis for $QP_k(n)$, give a formula for its dimension in terms of the Bell numbers, and describe a set of generators for $QP_k(n)$ as a complex algebra. In addition, we give the dimensions and indexing set of its irreducible representations. We also provide the Bratteli diagram for the tower of quasi-partition algebras (constructed by letting $k$ range over the positive integers).
Affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras: The center

The degenerate affine and affine BMW algebras arise naturally in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras and quantum groups, respectively. Cyclotomic BMW algebras, affine Hecke algebras, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, and their degenerate versions are quotients. In this paper the theory is unified by treating the orthogonal and symplectic cases simultaneously; we make an exact parallel between the degenerate affine and affine cases via a new algebra which takes the role of the affine braid group for the degenerate setting. A main result of this paper is an identification of the centers of the affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras in terms of rings of symmetric functions which satisfy a "cancellation property" or "wheel condition" (in the degenerate case, a reformulation of a result of Nazarov). Miraculously, these same rings also arise in Schubert calculus, as the cohomology and K-theory of isotropic Grassmanians and symplectic loop Grassmanians. We also establish new intertwiner-like identities which, when projected to the center, produce the recursions for central elements given previously by Nazarov for degenerate affine BMW algebras, and by Beliakova-Blanchet for affine BMW algebras.

Diagram algebras (e.g. graded braid groups, Hecke algebras, Brauer algebras) arise as tensor power centralizer algebras, algebras of commuting operators for a Lie algebra action on a tensor space. This work explores centralizers of the action of a complex reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ on tensor space of the form $M \otimes N \otimes V^{\otimes k}$. We define the degenerate two-boundary braid algebra $\mathcal{G}_k$ and show that centralizer algebras contain quotients of this algebra in a general setting. As an example, we study in detail the combinatorics of special cases corresponding to Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and modules $M$ and $N$ indexed by rectangular partitions. For this setting, we define the degenerate extended two-boundary Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_k^{\mathrm{ext}}$ as a quotient of $\mathcal{G}_k$, and show that a quotient of $\mathcal{H}_k^{\mathrm{ext}}$ is isomorphic to a large subalgebra of the centralizer. We further study the representation theory of $\mathcal{H}_k^{\mathrm{ext}}$ to find that the seminormal representations are indexed by a known family of partitions. The bases for the resulting modules are given by paths in a lattice of partitions, and the action of $\mathcal{H}_k^{\mathrm{ext}}$ is given by combinatorial formulas.

We show how voting may be viewed naturally from an algebraic perspective by viewing voting profiles as elements of certain well-studied $\mathbb{Q}S_n$-modules. By using only a handful of simple combinatorial objects (e.g., tabloids) and some basic ideas from representation theory (e.g., Schur's Lemma), this allows us to recast and extend some well-known results in the field of voting theory.
