Rook characters as symmetric functions
We give several characterizations of an inhomogeneous basis of the ring of symmetric functions whose evaluations are the character values of the irreducible representations of the rook monoid (symmetric inverse semigroup). Using Schur--Weyl duality, we show that the transition coefficients of this basis with the power symmetric basis are the characters of the propagating partition algebra (dual symmetric inverse monoid algebra). In addition, the structure coefficients of this basis are equal to the coefficients in the smash (or Heisenberg) product of Schur functions.
Linear relations on star coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function
We prove that the coefficient of the star $\mathfrak{st}_{21^{n-2}}$ in the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ determines whether a connected graph $G$ is $2$-connected. We also prove new linear relations on other star coefficients of chromatic symmetric functions. This allows us to find new bases for certain spans of chromatic symmetric functions. Finally, we relate the coefficient of the star $\mathfrak{st}_n$ to acyclic orientations.
A geometric and generating function approach to plethysm
Plethysm coefficients $\mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λ$ are the structure coefficients of the plethysm of Schur functions $s_μ[s_ν] = \sum_λ \mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λs_λ$. We study a bivariate generating function of plethysm coefficients when $λ$ has bounded length. We show that this generating function is rational. A key step is MacMahon's combinatory analysis. When the bound on the length is $2$ we give an explicit geometric algorithm to compute it using $q$-Ehrhart theory. We give evidence that the generating function is the quantum Ehrhart series of a union of half-open polytopes and show that it satisfies a reciprocity theorem reminiscent of Ehrhart reciprocity. Furthermore, we give a set of linear recursions that completely describe the $\mathrm{SL}_2$-plethysm coefficients.
Minimal elements in the skew extended 0-Hecke poset
The row-strict 0-Hecke action on standard immaculate skew tableaux was studied by the present authors, who showed that it gives rise to a bounded poset, called the \emph{skew immaculate Hecke poset}, and consequently to a cyclic 0-Hecke module. It was further shown that the subposet of skew standard extended immaculate tableaux always has a unique maximal element, but may have multiple minimal elements. In this paper we focus on these minimal elements, completely classifying them for a family of skew shapes that we call \emph{lobsters}. Moreover, we prove that when the skew shape is connected, the skew extended Hecke poset does have a unique minimal element, thereby showing that the associated 0-Hecke module is cyclic for both the row-strict and the dual immaculate actions.
On the reconstruction of trees from their chromatic symmetric functions
We study Stanley's chromatic symmetric function (CSF) for trees when expressed in the star basis. We use the deletion-near-contraction (DNC) algorithm to compute coefficients that occur in the CSF in the star basis. In particular, one of our main results determines the smallest partition in lexicographic order that occurs as an indexing partition in the CSF, and we also give a formula for its coefficient. In addition to describing properties of trees encoded in the coefficients of the star basis, we give an algorithm for reconstructing trees of diameter less than six.
The Chromatic Symmetric Function for Unicyclic Graphs
Motivated by the question of which structural properties of a graph can be recovered from the chromatic symmetric function (CSF), we study the CSF of connected unicyclic graphs. While it is known that there can be non-isomorphic unicyclic graphs with the same CSF, we find experimentally that such examples are rare for graphs with up to 17 vertices. In fact, in many cases we can recover data such as the number of leaves, number of internal edges, cycle size, and number of attached non-trivial trees, by extending known results for trees to unicyclic graphs. These results are obtained by analyzing the CSF of a connected unicyclic graph in the $\textit{star-basis}$ using the deletion-near-contraction (DNC) relation developed by Aliste-Prieto, Orellana and Zamora, and computing the "leading" partition, its coefficient, as well as coefficients indexed by hook partitions. We also give explicit formulas for star-expansions of several classes of graphs, developing methods for extracting coefficients using structural properties of the graph.

The immaculate Hecke poset was introduced and investigated by Niese, Sundaram, van Willigenburg, Vega and Wang, who established the full poset structure, and determined modules for the 0-Hecke algebra action on immaculate and row-strict immaculate tableaux.
In this paper, we extend their results by introducing the skew immaculate Hecke poset. We investigate the poset structure, and construct modules for the 0-Hecke algebra action on skew immaculate and skew row-strict immaculate tableaux, thus showing that the skew immaculate Hecke poset captures representation-theoretic information analogous to the immaculate Hecke poset. We also describe branching rules for the resulting skew modules.

We study the lattice of submonoids of the uniform block permutation monoid containing the symmetric group (which is its group of units). We prove that this lattice is distributive under union and intersection by relating the submonoids containing the symmetric group to downsets in a new partial order on integer partitions. Furthermore, we show that the sizes of the $\mathscr{J}$-classes of the uniform block permutation monoid are sums of squares of dimensions of irreducible modules of the monoid algebra.

We study Stanley's chromatic symmetric function (CSF) for trees when expressed in the star-basis. We use the deletion-near-contraction algorithm recently introduced in \cite{ADOZ} to compute coefficients that occur in the CSF in the star-basis. In particular, one of our main results determines the smallest partition in lexicographic order that occurs as an indexing partition in the CSF, and we also give a formula for its coefficient. In addition to describing properties of trees encoded in the coefficients of the star-basis, we give two main applications of the leading coefficient result. The first is a strengthening of the result in \cite{ADOZ} that says that proper trees of diameter less than or equal to 5 can be reconstructed from their CSFs. In this paper we show that this is true for all trees of diameter less than or equal 5. In our second application, we show that the dimension of the subspace of symmetric functions spanned by the CSF of $n$-vertex trees is $p(n)-n+1$, where $p(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$.

It is an important problem in algebraic combinatorics to deduce the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function whose expansion in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric function is known. For example, formulas are known for the fundamental expansion of a Macdonald symmetric function and for the plethysm of two Schur functions, while the Schur expansions of these expressions are still elusive. Egge, Loehr and Warrington provided a method to obtain the Schur expansion from the fundamental expansion by replacing each quasisymmetric function by a Schur function (not necessarily indexed by a partition) and using straightening rules to obtain the Schur expansion. Here we provide a new method that only involves the coefficients of the quasisymmetric functions indexed by partitions and the quasi-Kostka matrix. As an application, we identify the lexicographically largest term in the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. We provide the Schur expansion of $s_w[s_h](x,y)$ for $w=2,3,4$ using novel symmetric chain decompositions of Young's lattice for partitions in a $w\times h$ box. For $w=4$, this is first known combinatorial expression for the coefficient of $s_λ$ in $s_{w}[s_{h}]$ for two-row partitions $λ$, and for $w=3$ the combinatorial expression is new.
Representations of the quasi-partition algebras
The quasi-partition algebras were introduced by Daugherty and the first author as centralizers of the symmetric group. In this article, we give a more general definition of these algebras and give a construction of their simple modules. In addition, we introduce two new algebras, we give linear bases and show that for specializations of their parameters, these new algebras are isomorphic to centralizer algebras. We provide a generalized Bratteli diagram that illustrates how the representation theory of the three algebras discussed in this paper are related. Moreover, we give combinatorial formulas for the dimensions of the simple modules of these algebras.

Composing two representations of the general linear groups gives rise to Littlewood's (outer) plethysm. On the level of characters, this poses the question of finding the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. A combinatorial interpretation for the Schur expansion coefficients of the plethysm of two Schur functions is, in general, still an open problem. We identify a proof technique of combinatorial representation theory, which we call the "$s$-perp trick", and point out several examples in the literature where this idea is used. We use the $s$-perp trick to give algorithms for computing monomial and Schur expansions of symmetric functions. In several special cases, these algorithms are more efficient than those currently implemented in {\sc SageMath}.

The main result of this paper is the introduction of marked graphs and the marked graph polynomials ($M$-polynomial) associated with them. These polynomials can be defined via a deletion-contraction operation. These polynomials are a generalization of the $W$-polynomial introduced by Noble and Welsh and a specialization of the $\mathbf{V}$-polynomial introduced by Ellis-Monaghan and Moffatt. In addition, we describe an important specialization of the $M$-polynomial which we call the $D$-polynomial. Furthermore, we give an efficient algorithm for computing the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in the \emph{star-basis} of symmetric functions. As an application of these tools, we prove that proper trees of diameter at most 5 can be reconstructed from its chromatic symmetric function.

We study the representation theory of the uniform block permutation algebra in the context of the representation theory of factorizable inverse monoids. The uniform block permutation algebra is a subalgebra of the partition algebra and is also known as the party algebra. We compute its characters and provide a Frobenius characteristic map to symmetric functions. This reveals connections of the characters of the uniform block permutation algebra and plethysms of Schur functions.

We introduce the multiset partition algebra, ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, that has bases elements indexed by multiset partitions, where $x$ is an indeterminate and $r$ and $k$ are non-negative integers. This algebra can be realized as a diagram algebra that generalizes the partition algebra. When $x$ is an integer greater or equal to $2r$, we show that ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$ is isomorphic to a centralizer algebra of the symmetric group, $S_n$, acting on the polynomial ring on the variables $x_{ij}$, $1\leq i \leq n$ and $1\leq j\leq k$. We describe the representations of ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, branching rule and restriction of its representations in the case that $x$ is an integer greater or equal to $2r$.
A combinatorial model for the decomposition of multivariate polynomial rings as $S_n$-modules
We consider the symmetric group $S_n$-module of the polynomial ring with $m$ sets of $n$ commuting variables and $m'$ sets of $n$ anti-commuting variables and show that the multiplicity of an irreducible indexed by the partition $λ$ (a partition of $n$) is the number of multiset tableaux of shape $λ$ satisfying certain column and row strict conditions. We also present a finite generating set for the ring of $S_n$ invariant polynomials of this ring.

We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset tableau of content $[k]$. We also obtain an algorithm from partition diagrams to pairs of a standard tableau and a standard multiset tableau of the same shape, which has the remarkable property that it is well-behaved with respect to restricting a representation to a subalgebra. This insertion algorithm matches recent representation-theoretic results of Halverson and Jacobson.

In arXiv:1605.06672 the authors introduced inhomogeneous bases of the ring of symmetric functions. The elements in these bases have the property that they evaluate to characters of symmetric groups. In this article we develop further properties of these bases by proving product and coproduct formulae. In addition, we give the transition coefficients between the elementary symmetric functions and the irreducible character basis.

In a recent paper, the authors introduced a new basis of the ring of symmetric functions which evaluate to the irreducible characters of the symmetric group at roots of unity. The structure coefficients for this new basis are the stable Kronecker coefficients. In this paper we give combinatorial descriptions for several products that have as consequences several versions of the Pieri rule for this new basis of symmetric functions. In addition, we give several applications of the products studied in this paper.

We provide a crystal structure on the set of ordered multiset partitions, which recently arose in the pursuit of the Delta Conjecture. This conjecture was stated by Haglund, Remmel and Wilson as a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture. Various statistics on ordered multiset partitions arise in the combinatorial analysis of the Delta Conjecture, one of them being the minimaj statistic, which is a variant of the major index statistic on words. Our crystal has the property that the minimaj statistic is constant on connected components of the crystal. In particular, this yields another proof of the Schur positivity of the graded Frobenius series of the generalization $R_{n,k}$ due to Haglund, Rhoades and Shimozono of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$. The crystal structure also enables us to demonstrate the equidistributivity of the minimaj statistic with the major index statistic on ordered multiset partitions.
