Excessive symmetry can preclude cutoff
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each $n,r \geq 0$, let $KG(n,r)$ denote the Kneser Graph; that whose vertices are labeled by $r$-element subsets of $n$, and whose edges indicate that the corresponding subsets are disjoint. Fixing $r$ and allowing $n$ to vary, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each equipped with a natural action by a symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, such that these actions are compatible and transitive. Families of graphs of this form were introduced by the authors in [RW], while a systematic study of random walks on these families were considered in [RW2]. In this paper we illustrate that these random walks never exhibit the so-called product condition, and therefore also never display total variation cutoff as defined by Aldous and Diaconis [AD]. In particular, we provide a large family of algebro-combinatorially motivated examples of collections of Markov chains which satisfy some well-known algebraic heuristics for cutoff, while not actually having the property.

A strong stationary time for random transpositions
We show that the random transposition walk on the symmetric group $S_n$ has cutoff in separation distance at $\frac{1}{2}n \log n$, by constructing a strong stationary time. The construction involves working with cycle types of permutations and some partition combinatorics.

Families of Markov chains with compatible symmetric-group actions

For each $n,r \geq 0$, let $KG(n,r)$ denote the Kneser Graph; that whose vertices are labeled by $r$-element subsets of $n$, and whose edges indicate that the corresponding subsets are disjoint. Fixing $r$ and allowing $n$ to vary, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each equipped with a natural action by a symmetric group $S_n$, such that these actions are compatible. Collections of graphs of this type are common in algebraic combinatorics and include families such as the Johnson Graphs, Crown Graphs and Rook Graphs. In previous work, the authors systematically studied families of this type using the language of representation stability and FI-modules. In that work, it is shown that such families of graphs exhibit a large variety of asymptotic regular behaviors. The present work applies the theory developed in that previous work, later refined in work of the authors and Speyer, to study random walks on the graphs of such families. We show that the moments of hitting times exhibit rational function behavior asymptotically. By consequence we conclude similar facts about the entries of the discrete Green's functions, as defined by Chung and Yau. Finally, we illustrate how the algebro-combinatorial structure of the graphs in these families give bounds on the mixing times of random walks on those graphs. We suggest some possible directions for future study, including of the appearance, or not, of the cut-off phenomenon, originally presented by Diaconis.

FI-sets with relations

Let FI denote the category whose objects are the sets $[n] = \{1,\ldots, n\}$, and whose morphisms are injections. We study functors from the category FI into the category of sets. We write $\mathfrak{S}_n$ for the symmetric group on $[n]$. Our first main result is that, if the functor $[n] \mapsto X_n$ is "finitely generated" there there is a finite sequence of integers $m_i$ and a finite sequence of subgroups $H_i$ of $\mathfrak{S}_{m_i}$ such that, for $n$ sufficiently large, $X_n \cong \bigsqcup_i \mathfrak{S}_n/(H_i \times \mathfrak{S}_{n-m_i})$ as a set with $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action. Our second main result is that, if $[n] \mapsto X_n$ and $[n] \mapsto Y_n$ are two such finitely generated functors and $R_n \subset X_n \times Y_n$ is an FI-invariant family of relations, then the $(0,1)$ matrices encoding the relation $R_n$, when written in an appropriate basis, vary polynomially with $n$. In particular, if $R_n$ is an FI-invariant family of relations from $X_n$ to itself, then the eigenvalues of this matrix are algebraic functions of $n$. As an application of this theorem we provide a proof of a result about eigenvalues of adjacency matrices claimed by the first and last author. This result recovers, for instance, that the adjacency matrices of the Kneser graphs have eigenvalues which are algebraic functions of $n$, while also expanding this result to a larger family of graphs.

Families of nested graphs with compatible symmetric-group actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For fixed positive integers $n$ and $k$, the Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ has vertices labeled by $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and edges between disjoint sets. Keeping $k$ fixed and allowing $n$ to grow, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each of which is acted on by a symmetric group in a way which is compatible with all of the other actions. In this paper, we provide a framework for studying families of this kind using the FI-module theory of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb, and show that this theory has a variety of asymptotic consequences for such families of graphs. These consequences span a range of topics including enumeration, concerning counting occurrences of subgraphs, topology, concerning Hom-complexes and configuration spaces of the graphs, and algebra, concerning the changing behaviors in the graph spectra.

The weak Bruhat order for random walks on Coxeter groups
We show that for the simple random walk on a Coxeter group generated by the Coxeter generators and identity, the likelihoods of being at any pair of states respect the weak Bruhat order. That is, after any number of steps, the most likely element is the identity, probabilities decrease along any geodesic from the identity, and the least likely element is the longest element, if the group is finite. The result remains true when different generators have different probabilities, so long as the identity is at least as likely as any other.

Shuffling large decks of cards and the Bernoulli-Laplace urn model
Published • View PublicationBIB
In card games, in casino games with multiple decks of cards and in cryptography, one is sometimes faced with the following problem: how can a human (as opposed to a computer) shuffle a large deck of cards? The procedure we study is to break the deck into several reasonably sized piles, shuffle each thoroughly, recombine the piles, do some simple deterministic operation, for instance a cut, and repeat. This process can also be seen as a generalised Bernoulli-Laplace urn model. We use coupling arguments and spherical function theory to derive upper and bounds on the mixing times of these Markov chains.
Braid moves in commutation classes of the symmetric group
Published in European J. Combin. 62 (2017) 15-34 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the expected number of braid moves in the commutation class of the reduced word $(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-1})(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-2}) \cdots (s_1 s_2)(s_1)$ for the long element in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is one. This is a variant of a similar result by V. Reiner, who proved that the expected number of braid moves in a random reduced word for the long element is one. The proof is bijective and uses X. Viennot's theory of heaps and variants of the promotion operator. In addition, we provide a refinement of this result on orbits under the action of even and odd promotion operators. This gives an example of a homomesy for a nonabelian (dihedral) group that is not induced by an abelian subgroup. Our techniques extend to more general posets and to other statistics.

Variations of the Poincaré series for affine Weyl groups and q-analogues of Chebyshev polynomials
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 82 (2017) 129-154 • View PublicationBIB
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and write $P_W(q)$ for its Poincaré series. Lusztig has shown that the quotient $P_W(q^2)/P_W(q)$ is equal to a certain power series $L_{W}(q)$, defined by specializing one variable in the generating function recording the lengths and absolute lengths of the involutions in $W$. The simplest inductive method of proving this result for finite Coxeter groups suggests a natural bivariate generalization $L^J_W(s,q) \in \mathbb{Z}[[s,q]]$ depending on a subset $J\subset S$. This new power series specializes to $L_W(q)$ when $s=-1$ and is given explicitly by a sum of rational functions over the involutions which are minimal length representatives of the double cosets of the parabolic subgroup $W_J$ in $W$. When $ W$ is an affine Weyl group, we consider the renormalized power series $T_{ W}(s,q) = L^J_W(s,q) / L_W(q)$ with $J$ given by the generating set of the corresponding finite Weyl group. We show that when $W$ is an affine Weyl group of type $A$, the power series $T_W(s,q)$ is actually a polynomial in $s$ and $q$ with nonnegative coefficients, which turns out to be a $q$-analogue recently studied by Cigler of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, arising in a completely different context.
