Equivariant Schubert Calculus for Inverse Grassmannian Permutations
We give a Graham-positive expansion for the product of two double Schubert polynomials indexed by two inverse Grassmannian permutations. Surprisingly, the nonzero structure constants are double Schubert polynomials in two disjoint sets of equivariant variables. We also give a positive expansion for the product of two single Schubert polynomials indexed by a $321$-avoiding permutation (e.g., a Grassmannian permutation) and an inverse Grassmannian permutation. Unexpectedly, the nonzero structure constants are Edelman--Greene coefficients.

Bumpless Pipe Dream Fragments -- Equivariant Geometry of Clans
In this paper, we establish a new geometric setting for bumpless pipe dreams and double Schubert polynomials. Building on the notion of bumpless pipe dream fragments, we define clan polynomials as their weight generating functions. It turns out that clan polynomials arise naturally in the equivariant geometry of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbits over the flag variety $Fl_{p+q}$ parametrized by $(p,q)$-clans. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the equivariant Schubert expansion of the fundamental classes of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbit closures are exactly clan polynomials, which resolves an open problem posed by Wyser and Yong.

Hybrid pipe dreams for the lower-upper scheme
In [KU23] were introduced hybrid pipe dreams interpolating between classic and bumpless pipe dreams, each hybridization giving a different formula for double Schubert polynomials. A bijective proof was given (following [GH23]) of the independence of hybridization, but only for nonequivariant Schubert polynomials. In this paper we further generalize to hybrid generic pipe dreams, replacing the bijective proof of hybridization-independence with a Yang-Baxter-based proof that allows one to maintain equivariance. An additional YB-based proof establishes a divided-difference type recurrence for these generic pipe dream polynomials. These polynomials compute something richer than double Schubert polynomials, namely the equivariant classes of the lower-upper varieties introduced in [Knu05]. We give two proofs of this: the easier being a proof that the recurrence relation holds on those classes, the more difficult being a degeneration of the lower-upper variety to a union of quadratic complete intersections (plus, possibly, some embedded components) whose individual classes match those of the generic pipe dreams. One new feature of the generic situation is a definition of the "flux" through an edge of the matrix; the notion of pipe dream itself can then be derived from the equalities among the fluxes.

Graham positivity of triple Schubert calculus
We prove Samuel's conjecture on certain Graham positivity of the expansion coefficient of two double Schubert polynomials in three sets of variables by establishing a refined version of Graham's positivity theorem. As a corollary, we prove Kirillov's conjecture on the positivity of skew divided difference operators applied to Schubert polynomials.
Equivariant quasisymmetry and noncrossing partitions
We introduce a definition of ``equivariant quasisymmetry'' for polynomials in two sets of variables. Using this definition we define quasisymmetric generalizations of the theory of double Schur and double Schubert polynomials that we call double fundamental polynomials and double forest polynomials, where the subset of ``noncrossing partitions'' plays the role of $S_n$. In subsequent work we will show this combinatorics is governed by a new geometric construction we call the ``quasisymmetric flag variety'' which plays the same role for equivariant quasisymmetry as the usual flag variety plays in the classical story.

Generic pipe dreams, lower-upper varieties, and Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We recall the lower-upper varieties from [Knutson '05] and give a formula for their equivariant cohomology classes, as a sum over generic pipe dreams. We recover as limits the classic and bumpless pipe dream formulae for double Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct, we obtain a formula for the degree of the $n$th commuting variety as a sum of powers of 2. Generic pipe dreams also appear in the Segre-Schwarz-MacPherson analogue of the AJS/Billey formula, and when computing the Chern-Schwarz-MacPherson class of the orbit $B_- w B_+ \subseteq Mat_{k\times n}$ or of a double Bruhat cell $B_-u B_+ \cap B_+ v B_-$.

Double orthodontia formulas and Lascoux positivity
We give a new formula for double Grothendieck polynomials based on Magyar's orthodontia algorithm for diagrams. Our formula implies a similar formula for double Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak S_w(\mathbf x;\mathbf y)$. We also prove a curious positivity result: for vexillary permutations $w\in S_n$, the polynomial $x_1^n\dots x_n^n \mathfrak S_w(x_n^{-1}, \dots, x_1^{-1}; 1,\dots,1)$ is a graded nonnegative sum of Lascoux polynomials. We conjecture that this positivity result holds for all $w\in S_n$. This conjecture would follow from a problem of independent interest regarding Lascoux positivity of certain products of Lascoux polynomials.

Zero-one Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fink, Mészáros and St.Dizier showed that the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ is zero-one if and only if $w$ avoids twelve permutation patterns. In this paper, we prove that the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}_w(x)$ is zero-one, i.e., with coefficients either 0 or $\pm$1, if and only if $w$ avoids six patterns. As applications, we show that the normalized double Schubert polynomial $N(\mathfrak{S}_w(x;y))$ is Lorentzian when $\mathfrak{G}_w(x)$ is zero-one, partially confirming a conjecture of Huh, Matherne, Mészáros and St.Dizier. Moreover, we verify several conjectures on the support and coefficients of Grothendieck polynomials posed by Mészáros, Setiabrata and St.Dizier for the case of zero-one Grothendieck polynomials.
Quantum bumpless pipe dreams
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e28 • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the cohomology of the complete flag variety and have a combinatorial formulation in terms of bumpless pipe dreams. Quantum double Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of the complete flag variety, but no analogous combinatorial formulation had been discovered. We introduce a generalization of the bumpless pipe dreams called quantum bumpless pipe dreams, giving a novel combinatorial formula for quantum double Schubert polynomials as a sum of binomial weights of quantum bumpless pipe dreams. We give a bijective proof for this formula by showing that the sum of binomial weights satisfies a defining transition equation.

A Molev-Sagan type formula for double Schubert polynomials
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, Volume 228, Issue 7 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We give a Molev-Sagan type formula for computing the product $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)\mathfrak{S}_v(x;z)$ of two double Schubert polynomials in different sets of coefficient variables where the descents of $u$ and $v$ satisfy certain conditions that encompass Molev and Sagan's original case and conjecture positivity in the general case. Additionally, we provide a Pieri formula for multiplying an arbitrary double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)$ by a factorial elementary symmetric polynomial $E_{p,k}(x;z)$. Both formulas remain positive in terms of the negative roots when we set $y=z$, so in particular this gives a new equivariant Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Grassmannian, and more generally a positive formula for multiplying a factorial Schur polynomial $s_λ(x_1,\ldots,x_m;y)$ by a double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_v(x_1,\ldots,x_p;y)$ such that $m\geq p$. An additional new result we present is a combinatorial proof of a conjecture of Kirillov of nonnegativity of the coefficients of skew Schubert polynomials, and we conjecture a weight-preserving bijection between a modification of certain diagrams used in our formulas and RC-graphs/pipe dreams arising in formulas for double Schubert polynomials.

James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.
Double Schubert polynomials do have saturated Newton polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the Saturated Newton Polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study non-standard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity. This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

Schubert polynomials, the inhomogeneous TASEP, and evil-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distribution was conjecturally linked to Schubert polynomials by Lam-Williams, and explicit formulas for steady state probabilities were subsequently given in terms of multiline queues by Ayyer-Linusson and Arita-Mallick. In the case of general $y_i$, Cantini showed that $n$ of the $n!$ states have probabilities proportional to products of double Schubert polynomials. In this paper we introduce the class of evil-avoiding permutations, which are the permutations avoiding the patterns $2413, 4132, 4213$ and $3214$. We show that there are $\frac{(2+\sqrt{2})^{n-1}+(2-\sqrt{2})^{n-1}}{2}$ evil-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and for each evil-avoiding permutation $w$, we give an explicit formula for the steady state probability $ψ_w$ as a product of double Schubert polynomials. We also show that the Schubert polynomials that arise in these formulas are flagged Schur functions, and give a bijection in this case between multiline queues and semistandard Young tableaux.

Schubert Polynomials in Types A and C
Enriched versions of type A Schubert polynomials are constructed with coefficients in a polynomial ring in variables $c_1, c_2, \ldots$. Specializing these variables to $0$ recovers the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger; specializing them to certain power series recovers the back-stable double Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono; specializing them to Schur Q-polynomials relates them to the type C double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse. Many formulas for classical Schubert polynomials generalize to this setting. They give, and are characterized by, formulas for degeneracy loci.

Schubert polynomials and the inhomogeneous TASEP on a ring
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The \emph{inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process} (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. In the case of general $y_i$, Cantini showed that $n$ of the $n!$ states have probabilities proportional to double Schubert polynomials. In this paper we introduce the class of \emph{evil-avoiding permutations}, which are the permutations avoiding the patterns $2413, 4132, 4213$ and $3214$.

We give bijective proofs of Monk's rule for Schubert and double Schubert polynomials computed with bumpless pipe dreams. In particular, they specialize to bijective proofs of transition and cotransition formulas of Schubert and double Schubert polynomials, which can be used to establish bijections with ordinary pipe dreams.

Double Grothendieck polynomials and colored lattice models
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN; art. ID rnaa327 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We construct an integrable colored six-vertex model whose partition function is a double Grothendieck polynomial. This gives an integrable systems interpretation of bumpless pipe dreams and recent results of Weigandt [arXiv:2003.07342] relating double Grothendieck polynomias with bumpless pipe dreams. For vexillary permutations, we then construct a new model that we call the semidual version model. We use our semidual model and the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai to given a new proof that double Grothendieck polynomials for vexillary permutations are equal to flagged factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Taking the stable limit of double Grothendieck polynomials, we obtain a new proof that the stable limit is a factorial Grothendieck polynomial as defined by McNamara. The states of our semidual model naturally correspond to families of nonintersecting lattice paths, where we can then use the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma to give a determinant formula for double Schubert polynomials corresponding to vexillary permutations.

Bumpless pipe dreams and alternating sign matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their work on the infinite flag variety, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2018) introduced objects called bumpless pipe dreams and used them to give a formula for double Schubert polynomials. We extend this formula to the setting of K-theory, giving an expression for double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over a larger class of bumpless pipe dreams. Our proof relies on techniques found in an unpublished manuscript of Lascoux (2002). Lascoux showed how to write double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over alternating sign matrices. We explain how to view the Lam-Lee-Shimozono formula as a disguised special case of Lascoux's alternating sign matrix formula. Knutson, Miller, and Yong (2009) gave a tableau formula for vexillary Grothendieck polynomials. We recover this formula by showing vexillary marked bumpless pipe dreams and flagged set-valued tableaux are in weight preserving bijection. Finally, we give a bijection between Hecke bumpless pipe dreams and decreasing tableaux. The restriction of this bijection to Edelman-Greene bumpless pipe dreams solves a problem of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono.

Schubert polynomials, pipe dreams, equivariant classes, and a co-transition formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof that three families of polynomials coincide: the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger defined by divided difference operators, the pipe dream polynomials of Bergeron and Billey, and the equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties. All three families are shown to satisfy a "co-transition formula" which we explain to be some extent projectively dual to Lascoux' transition formula. We comment on the K-theoretic extensions.
