A Hopf algebra on permutations with a coupling product
We define a coupling product and a draw coproduct on permutations and show that they define a graded, connected, cocommutative, free Hopf algebra $\mathbb{KS}$. In characteristic zero, this implies that $\mathbb{KS}$ is isomorphic to a certain cocommutative Hopf algebra associated with the dual of the coradical filtration of the Malvenuto--Reutenauer Hopf algebra on permutations. The coupling product and draw coproduct are permutation analogues of the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of symmetric functions; therefore, we can say that our presentation is a monomial basis for $\mathbb{KS}$.
A memorial tribute: Adriano Garsia (1928--2024)
Adriano Mario Garsia was born in Tunis on August 20, 1928, to a Tunisian-Italian family. He lived on a farm there until the end of World War II, then moved to Rome. After finishing high school, he was sent to the United States to live with relatives in Woyming and eventually made his way to California, becoming a student of Charles Loewner at Stanford in the early 1950s. Following his Ph.D., Adriano held positions at MIT, the University of Minnesota, and Caltech before joining the nascent mathematics department at the University of California, San Diego, in 1966 where he spent the remainder of his career. He passed away in San Diego on October 6, 2024, at the age of 96.
The Quasisymmetric Grassmannian
We construct a complex of toric varieties we call the quasisymmetric Grassmannian inside the Grassmannian of $r$-planes in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Each irreducible component is a positroid variety and an $S_n$ translate of a toric Richardson variety of ribbon shape. We describe it as the vanishing locus of equations $Δ_AΔ_{A'}=0$ in Plücker coordinates determined by a new noncrossing combinatorial object we call the quasisymmetric Johnson graph. We give an affine paving, and show that its cohomology ring is a quasisymmetric modification of the Borel presentation of the Grassmannian's cohomology, with fundamental quasisymmetric polynomials playing the role of Schur polynomials.
The Coxeter Flag Variety
For a Coxeter element $c$ in a Weyl group $W$, we define the $c$-Coxeter flag variety $\operatorname{CFl}_c\subset G/B$ as the union of left-translated Richardson varieties $w^{-1}X^{wc}_w$. This is a complex of toric varieties whose geometry is governed by the lattice $\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$ of $c$-noncrossing partitions. We show that $\operatorname{CFl}_c$ is the common vanishing locus of the generalized Plücker coordinates indexed by $W\setminus\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$. We also construct an explicit affine paving of $\operatorname{CFl}_c$ and identify the $T$-weights of each cell in terms of $c$-clusters. This paving gives a GKM description of $H^\bullet(\operatorname{CFl}_c)$ and $H^\bullet_{T_{ad}}(\operatorname{CFl}_c)$ in terms of the induced Cayley subgraph on $\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$, and we show these rings are naturally isomorphic for different choices of $c$. In type $\mathrm{A}$, this recovers the quasisymmetric flag variety for a special $c$, and for general $c$ we show the cohomology ring has a presentation as permuted quasisymmetric coinvariants.
Equivariant quasisymmetry and noncrossing partitions
We introduce a definition of ``equivariant quasisymmetry'' for polynomials in two sets of variables. Using this definition we define quasisymmetric generalizations of the theory of double Schur and double Schubert polynomials that we call double fundamental polynomials and double forest polynomials, where the subset of ``noncrossing partitions'' plays the role of $S_n$. In subsequent work we will show this combinatorics is governed by a new geometric construction we call the ``quasisymmetric flag variety'' which plays the same role for equivariant quasisymmetry as the usual flag variety plays in the classical story.

Interval hypergraphic lattices
Published in European J. Combin., 132: 104285, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
For a hypergraph $\mathbb{H}$ on $[n]$, the hypergraphic poset $P_\mathbb{H}$ is the transitive closure of the oriented skeleton of the hypergraphic polytope $\triangle_\mathbb{H}$ (the Minkowski sum of the standard simplices $\triangle_H$ for all $H \in \mathbb{H}$). Hypergraphic posets include the weak order for the permutahedron (when $\mathbb{H}$ is the complete graph on $[n]$) and the Tamari lattice for the associahedron (when $\mathbb{H}$ is the set of all intervals of $[n]$), which motivates the study of lattice properties of hypergraphic posets. In this paper, we focus on interval hypergraphs, where all hyperedges are intervals of $[n]$. We characterize the interval hypergraphs $\mathbb{I}$ for which $P_\mathbb{I}$ is a lattice, a distributive lattice, a semidistributive lattice, and a lattice quotient of the weak order.
A quantum Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for the flag manifold
Published in Algebr. Comb. {\bf 8-3} (2025) p. 619--653 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we give a rule for the multiplication of a Schubert class by a tautological class in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold. As an intermediate step, we establish a formula for the multiplication of a Schubert class by a quantum Schur polynomial indexed by a hook partition. This entails a detailed analysis of chains and intervals in the quantum Bruhat order. This analysis allows us to use results of Leung--Li and of Postnikov to reduce quantum products by hook Schur polynomials to the (known) classical product.
Lattices of acyclic pipe dreams

We show that for any permutation $ω$, the increasing flip graph on acyclic pipe dreams with exiting permutation $ω$ is a lattice quotient of the interval $[e,ω]$ of the weak order. We then discuss conjectural generalizations of this result to acyclic facets of subword complexes on arbitrary finite Coxeter groups.

The excedance quotient of the Bruhat order, Quasisymmetric Varieties and Temperley-Lieb algebras

Let $R_n=\mathbb{Q}[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ be the ring of polynomial in $n$ variables and consider the ideal $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle\subseteq R_n$ generated by quasisymmetric polynomials without constant term. It was shown by J.~C.~Aval, F.~Bergeron and N.~Bergeron that $\dim\big(R_n\big/\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+} \rangle\big)=C_n$ the $n$th Catalan number. In the present work, we explain this phenomenon by defining a set of permutations $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ with the following properties: first, $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ is a basis of the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$, and second, when considering $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ as a collection of points in $\mathbb{Q}^{n}$, the top-degree homogeneous component of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathrm{QSV}_{n})$ is $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle$. Our construction has a few byproducts which are independently noteworthy. We define an equivalence relation $\sim$ on the symmetric group $S_{n}$ using weak excedances and show that its equivalence classes are naturally indexed by noncrossing partitions. Each equivalence class is an interval in the Bruhat order between an element of $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ and a $321$-avoiding permutation. Furthermore, the Bruhat order induces a well-defined order on $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$. Finally, we show that any section of the quotient $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$ gives an (often novel) basis for $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$.
Quasisymmetric harmonics of the exterior algebra

We study the ring of quasisymmetric polynomials in $n$ anticommuting (fermionic) variables. Let $R_n$ denote the polynomials in $n$ anticommuting variables. The main results of this paper show the following interesting facts about quasisymmetric polynomials in anticommuting variables: (1) The quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ form a commutative sub-algebra of $R_n$. (2) There is a basis of the quotient of $R_n$ by the ideal $I_n$ generated by the quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ that is indexed by ballot sequences. The Hilbert series of the quotient is given by $$ \text{Hilb}_{R_n/I_n}(q) = \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor} f^{(n-k,k)} q^k\,,$$ where $f^{(n-k,k)}$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $(n-k,k)$. (3) There is a basis of the ideal generated by quasisymmetric polynomials that is indexed by sequences that break the ballot condition

{T}he Gröbner Basis of a Catalan Path Ideal
Published • View PublicationBIB
For the ideal $I = \langle y_1 + \dots + y_n, y^2_1, \dots , y^2_n \rangle$ in $R = {\mathbb F}[y_1, \dots , y_n]$ with char($\mathbb F$) = 0, we show that the reduced Gröbner basis with lex-order consists of polynomials $g_α$ that are represented in terms of paths, moving northeast in the Cartesian plane, that stay above the diagonal and cross the diagonal at the last step. This implies that a linear basis for the quotient ring $R/I$ is given by a set of Catalan paths. We show that the dimension is the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and height at most two. The graded Frobenius characteristic of $R/I$ as a symmetric group module is given by $\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor } s_{n-k,k}q^k$.
Hopf algebras of parking functions and decorated planar trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct three new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on the Loday-Ronco operations on planar binary trees. The first and second algebras are defined on planar trees and labeled planar trees extending the Loday-Ronco and Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebras respectively. We show that the latter is bidendriform which implies that is also free, cofree, and self-dual. The third algebra involves a new visualization of parking functions as decorated binary trees; it is also bidendriform, free, cofree, and self-dual, and therefore abstractly isomorphic to the algebra PQSym of Novelli and Thibon. We define partial orders on the objects indexing each of these three Hopf algebras, one of which, when restricting to (m+1)-ary trees, coarsens the m-Tamari order of Bergeron and Préville-Ratelle. We show that multiplication of dual fundamental basis elements are given by intervals in each of these orders. Finally, we use an axiomatized version of the techniques of Aguiar and Sottile on the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra to define a monomial basis on each of our Hopf algebras, and to show that comultiplication is cofree on the monomial elements. This in particular, implies the cofreeness of the Hopf algebra on planar trees. We also find explicit positive formulas for the multiplication on monomial basis and a cancellation-free and grouping-free formula for the antipode of monomial elements.

Sign variation and descents
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27(4) (2020), #P4.50 • View PublicationBIB
For any $n > 0$ and $0 \leq m < n$, let $P_{n,m}$ be the poset of projective equivalence classes of $\{-,0,+\}$-vectors of length $n$ with sign variation bounded by $m$, ordered by reverse inclusion of the positions of zeros. Let $Δ_{n,m}$ be the order complex of $P_{n,m}$. A previous result from the third author shows that $Δ_{n,m}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over $\mathbb{Q}$ whenever $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. Hence, it follows that the $h$-vector of $Δ_{n,m}$ consists of nonnegative entries. Our main result states that $Δ_{n,m}$ is partitionable and we give an interpretation of the $h$-vector when $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. When $m = n-1$ the entries of the $h$-vector turn out to be the new Eulerian numbers of type $D$ studied by Borowiec and Młotkowski in [{\em Electron. J. Combin.}, 23(1):Paper 1.38, 13, 2016]. We then combine our main result with Klee's generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations to give a geometric proof of some facts about these Eulerian numbers of type $D$.

Elliptic and $q$-Analogs of the Fibonomial Numbers

In 2009, Sagan and Savage introduced a combinatorial model for the Fibonomial numbers, integer numbers that are obtained from the binomial coefficients by replacing each term by its corresponding Fibonacci number. In this paper, we present a combinatorial description for the $q$-analog and elliptic analog of the Fibonomial numbers. This is achieved by introducing some $q$-weights and elliptic weights to a slight modification of the combinatorial model of Sagan and Savage.
New Invariants for Permutations, Orders and Graphs

We study the symmetric function and polynomial combinatorial invariants of Hopf algebras of permutations, posets and graphs. We investigate their properties and the relations among them. In particular, we show that the chromatic symmetric function and many other invariants have a property we call positively $h$-alternating. This property of positively $h$-alternating leads to Schur positivity and $e$-positivity when applying the operator $\nabla$ at $q=1$. We conclude by showing that the invariants we consider can be expressed as scheduling problems.

Flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs over the set of linear extensions of $\mathcal{P}$. In this more general context, the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ over determines a basis of polynomials. We thus introduce the notion of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, and we prove that the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for flagged $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ is precisely the fundamental slide basis of the polynomial ring, introduced by the first author and Searles. Our main theorem shows that any generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a positive integer linear combination of slide polynomials. As applications, we give a new proof of positivity of the slide product and, motivating our nomenclature, we also prove flagged Schur functions are slide positive.

Hopf dreams and diagonal harmonics
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc., 105(3):1546-1600, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a Hopf algebra structure on a family of reduced pipe dreams. We show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree, and construct a surjection onto a commutative Hopf algebra of permutations. The pipe dream Hopf algebra contains Hopf subalgebras with interesting sets of generators and Hilbert series related to subsequences of Catalan numbers. Three other relevant Hopf subalgebras include the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra on complete binary trees, a Hopf algebra related to a special family of lattice walks on the quarter plane, and a Hopf algebra on $ν$-trees related to $ν$-Tamari lattices. One of this Hopf subalgebras motivates a new notion of Hopf chains in the Tamari lattice, which are used to present applications and conjectures in the theory of multivariate diagonal harmonics.
Stable set polytopes and their 1-skeleta
We characterize the edges of two classes of $0/1$-polytopes. The first class corresponds to the stable set polytope of a graph $G$ and includes chain polytopes of posets, some instances of matroid independence polytopes, as well as newly-defined polytopes whose vertices correspond to noncrossing set partitions. In analogy with matroid basis polytopes, the second class is obtained by considering the stable sets of maximal cardinality. We investigate how the class of $0/1$-polytopes whose edges satisfy our characterization is situated within the hierarchy of $0/1$-polytopes. This includes the class of matroid polytopes. We also study the diameter of these classes of polytopes and improve slightly on the Hirsch bound.

Hypergraphic polytopes: combinatorial properties and antipode
Published in J. Comb. 10 (2019), no. 3, 515-544 • View PublicationBIB
In an earlier paper, the first two authors defined orientations on hypergraphs. Using this definition we provide an explicit bijection between acyclic orientations in hypergraphs and faces of hypergraphic polytopes. This allows us to obtain a geometric interpretation of the coefficients of the antipode map in a Hopf algebra of hypergraphs. This interpretation differs from similar ones for a different Hopf structure on hypergraphs provided recently by Aguiar and Ardila. Furthermore, making use of the tools and definitions developed here regarding orientations of hypergraphs we provide a characterization of hypergraphs giving rise to simple hypergraphic polytopes in terms of acyclic orientations of the hypergraph. In particular, we recover this fact for the nestohedra and the hyper-permutahedra, and prove it for generalized Pitman-Stanley polytopes as defined here.

Cancelation free formula for the antipode of linearized Hopf monoid
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial Hopf algebras $H$ in the literature are the functorial image of a linearized Hopf monoid $\bf H$. That is, $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$ or $H=\overline{\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$. Unlike the functor $\overline{\mathcal K}$, the functor ${\mathcal K}$ applied to ${\bf H}$ may not preserve the antipode of ${\bf H}$. In this case, one needs to consider the larger Hopf monoid ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$ to get $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})=\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf L}\times{\bf H})$ and study the antipode in ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. One of the main results in this paper provides a cancelation free and multiplicity free formula for the antipode of ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. From this formula we obtain a new antipode formula for $H$. We also explore the case when ${\bf H}$ is commutative and cocommutative. In this situation we get new antipode formulas that despite of not being cancelation free, can be used to obtain one for $\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf H})$ in some cases. We recover as well many of the well-known cancelation free formulas in the literature. One of our formulas for computing the antipode in ${\bf H}$ involves acyclic orientations of hypergraphs as the central tool. In this vein, we obtain polynomials analogous to the chromatic polynomial of a graph, and also identities parallel to Stanley's (-1)-color theorem. One of our examples introduces a {\it chromatic} polynomial for permutations which counts increasing sequences of the permutation satisfying a pattern. We also study the statistic obtained after evaluating such polynomial at $-1$. Finally, we sketch $q$ deformations and geometric interpretations of our results. This last part will appear in a sequel paper in joint work with J. Machacek.
