Dehn Sommerville Manifolds
Dehn-Sommerville manifolds are a class of finite abstract simplicial complexes that generalize discrete manifolds. Despite a simpler definition in comparison to manifolds, they still share most properties of manifolds. They especially satisfy all Dehn-Sommerville symmetries telling that half of the f-vector entries are redundant. They also share other properties with q-manifolds: for every Dehn-Sommerville q-manifold G and any function g: V(G) to A={0, ..., k} with positive k, the set of x such that g(x) contains A is a Dehn-Sommerville (q-k)-manifold if not empty. We also see that for Dehn-Sommerville q-manifolds, all higher characteristics w_m(G) agree with Euler characteristic that the chromatic number is bounded above by 2q+2 and that odd-dimensional Dehn-Sommerville manifolds are flat and form a monoid under the join operation. In general, Dehn-Sommerville manifolds are invariant under edge refinement, Barycentric refinement and Cartesian products.
Riordan pattern's quest within simplicial complexes
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we demonstrate how Riordan matrices can be employed to connect well-known concepts in geometric combinatorics, such as $f$-vectors, $h$-vectors $γ$-vectors, in a similar fashion to the McMullen Correspondence, and the Dehn-Sommerville equations, among others. Second, we investigate the combinatorial properties of the topological join operation, both for simplicial complexes and for Alexandroff spaces. Finally, we explore the Riordan matrices arising from the iteration of this topological operation and analyze their properties.
On a class of toric manifolds arising from simplicial complexes
Given an arbitrary abstract simplicial complex $K$ on $[m]:=\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$, different from the simplex $Δ_{[m]}$ with $m$ vertices, we introduce and study a canonical $(2m-2)$-dimensional toric manifold $X_K$, associated to the canonical $(m-1)$-dimensional complete regular fan $Σ_K$. This construction yields an infinite family of toric manifolds that are not quasitoric and provides a topological proof of the Dehn-Sommerville relations for the associated Bier sphere $\mathrm{Bier}(K)$. Finally, we prove a criterion for orientability of canonical real toric manifolds.
The peak algebra in noncommuting variables
The well-known descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{QSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, $\mathrm{QSym}$, and the peak algebra $Π$ were originally defined by Stembridge in 1997. We introduce their noncommutative analogues, the labelled descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{NCQSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, $\mathrm{NCQSym}$, and the peak algebra in noncommuting variables $\mathrm{NC}Π$. Then, we define the Hopf algebra of Schur $Q$-functions in noncommuting variables. We show that our generalizations possess many properties analogous to their classical counterparts. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the expansion of certain elements of $\mathrm{NC}Π$ in the monomial basis of $\mathrm{NCQSym}$ satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville equation of Bayer and Billera. In the end, we give representation-theoretic interpretations of the descent-to-peak map for the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.
The Sphere Formula
The sphere formula states that in an arbitrary finite abstract simplicial complex, the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at even-dimensional simplices is equal to the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at odd-dimensional simplices. It follows that if a geometry has constant unit sphere Euler characteristic, like a manifold, then all its unit spheres have zero Euler characteristic or the space itself has zero Euler characteristic. Especially, odd-dimensional manifolds have zero Euler characteristic, a fact usually verified either in algebraic topology using Poincaré duality together with Riemann-Hurwitz then deriving it from the existence of a Morse function, using that the Morse indices of the function and its negative add up to zero in odd dimensions. Gauss Bonnet also shows that odd-dimensional Dehn-Sommerville spaces have zero Euler characteristic because they have constant zero curvature. Zero curvature phenomenons can be understood integral geometrically as index expectation or as Dehn-Sommerville relations.
Exponential Hilbert series and hierarchical log-linear models
Consider a hierarchical log-linear model, given by a simplicial complex, $Γ$, and integer matrix $A_Γ$. We give a new characterization of the rank of $A_Γ$ given by a logarithmic transformation on the exponential Hilbert series of $Γ$. We show that, if each random variable in $X$ has the same number of possible outcomes, then this formula reduces to a simple description in terms of the face vector of $Γ$. If $Γ$ further satisfies the Dehn-Sommerville relations, then we give an exceptionally simple formula for computing the rank of $A_Γ$, and thus the dimension and the number of degrees of freedom of the model.
Fans and polytopes in tilting theory I: Foundations
For a finite dimensional algebra $A$ over a field $k$, the 2-term silting complexes of $A$ gives a simplicial complex $Δ(A)$ called the $g$-simplicial complex. We give tilting theoretic interpretations of the $h$-vectors and Dehn-Sommerville equations of $Δ(A)$. Using $g$-vectors of 2-term silting complexes, $Δ(A)$ gives a nonsingular fan $Σ(A)$ in the real Grothendieck group $K_0(\mathsf{proj} A)_{\mathbb{R}}$ called the $g$-fan. We give several basic properties of $Σ(A)$ including sign-coherence, sign decomposition, idempotent reductions, Jasso reductions, pairwise positivity and a connection with Newton polytopes of $A$-modules. Moreover, $Σ(A)$ gives a (possibly infinite and non-convex) polytope $P(A)$ in $K_0(\mathsf{proj} A)_{\mathbb{R}}$ called the $g$-polytope of $A$. We call $A$ $g$-convex if $P(A)$ is convex. In this case, we show that it is a reflexive polytope, and that the dual polytope is given by the 2-term simple minded collections of $A$. There are precisely 7 convex $g$-polyogons up to isomorphism. We give a classification of algebras whose $g$-polytopes are smooth Fano.
We study $g$-fans and $g$-polytopes of two important classes of algebras. We show that the $g$-fan of a classical or generalized preprojective algebra is given by the Coxeter fan. It is $g$-convex if and only if it is of type $A$ or $B$, and in this case, its $g$-polytope is the dual polytope of the short root polytope. Moreover we classify Brauer graph algebras which are $g$-convex, and describe their $g$-polytopes as the root polytopes of type $A$ or $C$.

For any $n > 0$ and $0 \leq m < n$, let $P_{n,m}$ be the poset of projective equivalence classes of $\{-,0,+\}$-vectors of length $n$ with sign variation bounded by $m$, ordered by reverse inclusion of the positions of zeros. Let $Δ_{n,m}$ be the order complex of $P_{n,m}$. A previous result from the third author shows that $Δ_{n,m}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over $\mathbb{Q}$ whenever $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. Hence, it follows that the $h$-vector of $Δ_{n,m}$ consists of nonnegative entries. Our main result states that $Δ_{n,m}$ is partitionable and we give an interpretation of the $h$-vector when $m$ is even or $m = n-1$. When $m = n-1$ the entries of the $h$-vector turn out to be the new Eulerian numbers of type $D$ studied by Borowiec and Młotkowski in [{\em Electron. J. Combin.}, 23(1):Paper 1.38, 13, 2016]. We then combine our main result with Klee's generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations to give a geometric proof of some facts about these Eulerian numbers of type $D$.
Non-Eulerian Dehn-Sommerville relations

The classical Dehn--Sommerville relations assert that the $h$-vector of an Eulerian simplicial complex is symmetric. We establish three generalizations of the Dehn--Sommerville relations: one for the $h$-vectors of pure simplicial complexes, another one for the flag $h$-vectors of balanced simplicial complexes and graded posets, and yet another one for the toric $h$-vectors of graded posets with restricted singularities. In all of these cases, we express any failure of symmetry in terms of "errors coming from the links." For simplicial complexes, this further extends Klee's semi-Eulerian relations.
Dehn-Sommerville from Gauss-Bonnet
We give a zero curvature proof of Dehn-Sommerville for finite simple graphs. It uses a parametrized Gauss-Bonnet formula telling that the curvature of the valuation G to f_G(t)=1+f0 t + ... + fd t^(d+1) defined by the f-vector of G is the anti-derivative F of f evaluated on the unit sphere S(x). Gauss Bonnet is then parametrized, f_G(t) = sum_x F_(S(x))(t), and holds for all simplicial complexes G. The Gauss-Bonnet formula chi(G)=sum_x K(x) for Euler characteristic chi(G) is the special case t=-1. Dehn-Sommerville is equivalent to the reflection symmetry f_G(t)+(-1)^d f_G(-1-t)=0 which is equivalent to the same symmetry for F. Gauss-Bonnet therefore relates Dehn-Sommerville for G with Dehn-Sommerville for the unit spheres S(x), where it is a zero curvature condition. A class X_d of complexes for which Dehn-Sommerville holds is defined inductively by requiring chi(G)=1+(-1)^d and S(x) in X_(d-1) for all x. It starts with X_(-1)={}. Examples are simplicial spheres, including homology spheres, any odd-dimensional discrete manifold, any even-dimensional discrete manifold with chi(G)=2. It also contains non-orientable ones for which Poincar'e-duality fails or stranger spaces like spaces where the unit spheres allow for two disjoint copies of manifolds with chi(G)=1. Dehn-Sommerville is present in the Barycentric limit. It is a symmetry for the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of the Barycentric refinement operator A. The even eigenfunctions of A^T, the Barycentric Dehn-Sommerville functionals, vanish on X like 22 f1 - 33 f2 + 40 f3 - 45f4=0 for all 4-manifolds.
On a Dehn-Sommerville functional for simplicial complexes
Assume G is a finite abstract simplicial complex with f-vector (v0,v1, ...), and generating function f(x) = sum(k=1 v(k-1) x^k = v0 x + v1 x^2+ v2 x^3 + ..., the Euler characteristic of G can be written as chi(G)=f(0)-f(-1). We study here the functional f1'(0)-f1'(-1), where f1' is the derivative of the generating function f1 of G1. The Barycentric refinement G1 of G is the Whitney complex of the finite simple graph for which the faces of G are the vertices and where two faces are connected if one is a subset of the other. Let L is the connection Laplacian of G, which is L=1+A, where A is the adjacency matrix of the connection graph G', which has the same vertex set than G1 but where two faces are connected they intersect. We have f1'(0)=tr(L) and for the Green function g L^(-1) also f1'(-1)=tr(g) so that eta1(G) = f1'(0)-f1'(-1) is equal to eta(G)=tr(L-L^(-1). The established formula tr(g)=f1'(-1) for the generating function of G1 complements the determinant expression det(L)=det(g)=zeta(-1) for the Bowen-Lanford zeta function zeta(z)=1/det(1-z A) of the connection graph G' of G. We also establish a Gauss-Bonnet formula eta1(G) = sum(x in V(G1) chi(S(x)), where S(x) is the unit sphere of x the graph generated by all vertices in G1 directly connected to x. Finally, we point out that the functional eta0(G) = sum(x in V(G) chi(S(x)) on graphs takes arbitrary small and arbitrary large values on every homotopy type of graphs.
Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids: Decompositions of Topes, and Dehn-Sommerville Type Relations
If V(R) is the vertex set of a symmetric cycle R in the tope graph of a simple oriented matroid M, then for any tope T of M there exists a unique inclusion-minimal subset Q(T;R) of V(R) such that T is the sum of the topes of Q(T;R).
If |Q(T;R)|>3, then the decomposition Q(T;R) of the tope T with respect to the symmetric cycle R satisfies certain Dehn-Sommerville type relations.
Gauss-Bonnet for multi-linear valuations
We prove Gauss-Bonnet and Poincare-Hopf formulas for multi-linear valuations on finite simple graphs G=(V,E) and answer affirmatively a conjecture of Gruenbaum from 1970 by constructing higher order Dehn-Sommerville valuations which vanish for all d-graphs without boundary. An example of a quadratic valuation is the Wu characteristic w(G) which sums (-1)^(dim(x)+dim(y)) over all intersecting pairs of complete subgraphs x,y of a G. More generally, an intersection number w(A,B) sums (-1)^(dim(x)+dim(y)) over pairs x,y, where x is in A and y is in B and x,y intersect. w(G) is a quadratic Euler characteristic X(G), where X sums (-1)^dim(x) over all complete subgraphs x of G. We prove that w is multiplicative, like Euler characteristic: w(G x H) = w(G) w(H) for any two graphs and that w is invariant under Barycentric refinements. We construct a curvature K satisfying Gauss-Bonnet w(G) = sum K(a). We also prove w(G) = X(G)-X(dG) for Euler characteristic X which holds for any d-graph G with boundary dG. We also show higher order Poincare-Hopf formulas: there is for every multi-linear valuation X and function f an index i(a) such that sum i(a)=X(G). For d-graphs G and X=w it agrees with the Euler curvature. For the vanishing multi-valuations which were conjectured to exist, like for the quadratic valuation X(G) = (V X) Y with X=(1,-1,1,-1,1),Y=(0,-2,3,-4,5) on 4-graphs, discrete 4 manifolds, where V_{ij}(G) is the f-matrix counting the number of i and j-simplices in G intersecting, the curvature is constant zero. For all graphs and multi-linear Dehn-Sommerville relations, the Dehn-Sommerville curvature K(v) at a vertex is a Dehn-Sommerville valuation on the unit sphere S(v). We show X V(G) Y = v(G) Y for any linear valuation Y of a d-graph G with f-vector v(G). This provides examples for the Gruenbaum conjecture.
The Dehn-Sommerville Relations and the Catalan Matroid

The $f$-vector of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ stores the number of faces of each dimension. When $P$ is simplicial the Dehn--Sommerville relations condense the $f$-vector into the $g$-vector, which has length $\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil$. Thus, to determine the $f$-vector of $P$, we only need to know approximately half of its entries. This raises the question: Which $(\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil)$-subsets of the $f$-vector of a general simplicial polytope are sufficient to determine the whole $f$-vector? We prove that the answer is given by the bases of the Catalan matroid.

The generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations determine the odd subalgebra of the combinatorial Hopf algebra. We introduce a class of eulerian hypergraphs that satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations for the combinatorial Hopf algebra of hypergraphs. We characterize a wide class of eulerian hypergraphs according to the combinatorics of underlying clutters. The analogous results hold for simplicial complexes by the isomorphism which is induced from the correspondence of clutters and simplicial complexes.

This paper introduces a new and simple statistic on noncrossing partitions that expresses each coordinate of the toric $h$-vector of a cubical complex, written in the basis of the Adin $h$-vector entries, as the total weight of all noncrossing partitions. The same model may also be used to obtain a very simple combinatorial interpretation of the contribution of a cubical shelling component to the toric $h$-vector. In this model, a strengthening of the symmetry expressed by the Dehn-Sommerville equations may be derived from the self-duality of the noncrossing partition lattice, exhibited by the involution of Simion and Ullman.

The combinatorial Hopf algebra on building sets $BSet$ extends the chromatic Hopf algebra of simple graphs. The image of a building set under canonical morphism to quasi-symmetric functions is the chromatic symmetric function of the corresponding hypergraph. By passing from graphs to building sets, we construct a sequence of symmetric functions associated to a graph. From the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations for the Hopf algebra $BSet$, we define a class of building sets called eulerian and show that eulerian building sets satisfy Bayer-Billera relations. We show the existence of the $\mathbf{c}\mathbf{d}-$index, the polynomial in two noncommutative variables associated to an eulerian building set. The complete characterization of eulerian building sets is given in terms of combinatorics of intersection posets of antichains of finite sets.

Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.

We investigate the face numbers of simplicial complexes with Buchsbaum vertex links, especially pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities. This includes deriving Dehn-Sommerville relations for pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities and establishing lower bound theorems when the singularities are also homologically isolated. We give formulas for the Hilbert function of a generic Artinian reduction of the face ring when the singularities are homologically isolated and for any pure two-dimensional complex. Some examples of spaces where the $f$-vector can be completely characterized are described. Let $Δ$ and $Δ'$ be two simplicial complexes that are homeomorphic and have the same $f$-vector. In \cite{MNS} the question is raised of whether or not the Hilbert functions of generic Artinian reductions of their face rings are identical. We prove that this is the case if the spaces have isolated singularities and are PL-homeomorphic.

We use Klee's Dehn-Sommerville relations and other results on face numbers of homology manifolds without boundary to (i) prove Kalai's conjecture providing lower bounds on the f-vectors of an even-dimensional manifold with all but the middle Betti number vanishing, (ii) verify Kühnel's conjecture that gives an upper bound on the middle Betti number of a 2k-dimensional manifold in terms of k and the number of vertices, and (iii) partially prove Kühnel's conjecture providing upper bounds on other Betti numbers of odd- and even-dimensional manifolds. For manifolds with boundary, we derive an extension of Klee's Dehn-Sommerville relations and strengthen Kalai's result on the number of their edges.
