Polymatroids are to finite groups as matroids are to finite fields
Given a subgroup $\mathcal{H}$ of a product of finite groups $\mathcal{G} = \displaystyle\prod^n_{i=1} Γ_i$ and $b>1,$ we define a polymatroid $P(\mathcal{H},b).$ If all of the $Γ_i$ are isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z},$ $p$ a prime, and $b=p,$ then $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ is the usual matroid associated to any $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-matrix whose row space equals $\mathcal{H}.$ In general, there are many ways in which the relationship between $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ and $\mathcal{H}$ mirrors that of the relationship between a matroid and a subspace of a finite vector space. These include representability by excluded minors, the Crapo-Rota critical theorem, the existence of a concrete algebraic object representing the polymatroid dual of $P(\mathcal{H},b),$ analogs of Greene's theorem and the MacWilliams identities when $\mathcal{H}$ is a group code over a nonabelian group, and a connection to the combinatorial Laplacian of a quotient space determined by $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}.$ We use the group Crapo-Rota critical theorem to demonstrate an extension to hypergraphs of the classical duality between proper colorings and nowhere-zero flows on graphs.

$g$-vectors of manifolds with boundary
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend several $g$-type theorems for connected, orientable homology manifolds without boundary to manifolds with boundary. As applications of these results we obtain Kühnel-type bounds on the Betti numbers as well as on certain weighted sums of Betti numbers of manifolds with boundary. Our main tool is the completion $\hatΔ$ of a manifold with boundary $Δ$; it is obtained from $Δ$ by coning off the boundary of $Δ$ with a single new vertex. We show that despite the fact that $\hatΔ$ has a singular vertex, its Stanley--Reisner ring shares a few properties with the Stanley--Reisner rings of homology spheres. We close with a discussion of a connection between three lower bound theorems for manifolds, PL-handle decompositions, and surgery.

Three-dimensional normal pseudomanifolds with relatively few edges
Published in Advances in Mathematics 365 (2020) 107035 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ$ be a $d$-dimensional normal pseudomanifold, $d \ge 3.$ A relative lower bound for the number of edges in $Δ$ is that $g_2$ of $Δ$ is at least $g_2$ of the link of any vertex. When this inequality is sharp $Δ$ has relatively minimal $g_2$. For example, whenever the one-skeleton of $Δ$ equals the one-skeleton of the star of a vertex, then $Δ$ has relatively minimal $g_2.$ Subdividing a facet in such an example also gives a complex with relatively minimal $g_2.$ We prove that in dimension three these are the only examples. As an application we determine the combinatorial and topological type of $3$-dimensional $Δ$ with relatively minimal $g_2$ whenever $Δ$ has two or fewer singularities. The topological type of any such complex is a pseudocompression body, a pseudomanifold version of a compression body. Complete combinatorial descriptions of $Δ$ with $g_2(Δ) \le 2$ are due to Kalai [12] $(g_2=0)$, Nevo and Novinsky [13] $(g_2=1)$ and Zheng [21] $(g_2=2).$ In all three cases $Δ$ is the boundary of a simplicial polytope. Zheng observed that for all $d \ge 0$ there are triangulations of $S^d \ast \mathbb{RP}^2$ with $g_2=3.$ She asked if this is the only nonspherical topology possible for $g_2(Δ)=3.$ As another application of relatively minimal $g_2$ we give an affirmative answer when $Δ$ is $3$-dimensional.

Thirty-five years and counting
It has been 35 years since Stanley proved that f-vectors of boundaries of simplicial polytopes satisfy McMullen's conjectured g-conditions. Since then one of the outstanding questions in the realm of face enumeration is whether or not Stanley's proof could be extended to larger classes of spheres. Here we hope to give an overview of various attempts to accomplish this and why we feel this is so important. In particular, we will see a strong connection to f-vectors of manifolds and pseudomanifolds. Along the way we have included several previously unpublished results involving how the g-conjecture relates to bistellar moves and small g_2, the topology and combinatorics of stacked manifolds introduced independently by Bagchi and Datta, and Murai and Nevo, and counterexamples to over optimistic generalizations of the g-theorem.

The average dual surface of a cohomology class and minimal simplicial decompositions of infinitely many lens spaces
Discrete normal surfaces are normal surfaces whose intersection with each tetrahedron of a triangulation has at most one component. They are also natural Poincaré duals to 1-cocycles with $\ZZ/2\ZZ$-coefficients. For a fixed cohomology class in a simplicial poset the average Euler characteristic of the associated discrete normal surfaces only depends on the $f$-vector of the triangulation. As an application we determine the minimum simplicial poset representations, also known as crystallizations, of lens spaces $L(2k,q),$ where $2k=qr+1.$ Higher dimensional analogs of discrete normal surfaces are closely connected to the Charney-Davis conjecture for flag spheres.

Face numbers of pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the face numbers of simplicial complexes with Buchsbaum vertex links, especially pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities. This includes deriving Dehn-Sommerville relations for pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities and establishing lower bound theorems when the singularities are also homologically isolated. We give formulas for the Hilbert function of a generic Artinian reduction of the face ring when the singularities are homologically isolated and for any pure two-dimensional complex. Some examples of spaces where the $f$-vector can be completely characterized are described. Let $Δ$ and $Δ'$ be two simplicial complexes that are homeomorphic and have the same $f$-vector. In \cite{MNS} the question is raised of whether or not the Hilbert functions of generic Artinian reductions of their face rings are identical. We prove that this is the case if the spaces have isolated singularities and are PL-homeomorphic.

Projection volumes of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for any finite real hyperplane arrangement the average projection volumes of the maximal cones is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the arrangement. This settles the conjecture of Drton and Klivans that this held for all finite real reflection arrangements. The methods used are geometric and combinatorial. As a consequence we determine that the angle sums of a zonotope are given by the characteristic polynomial of the order dual of the intersection lattice of the arrangement.

Face rings of simplicial complexes with singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
The face ring of a simplicial complex modulo m generic linear forms is shown to have finite local cohomology if and only if the link of every face of dimension m or more is `nonsingular', i.e., has the homology of a wedge of spheres of the expected dimension. This is derived from an enumerative result for local cohomology of face rings modulo generic linear forms, as compared with local cohomology of the face ring itself. The enumerative result is generalized in slightly weaker form to squarefree modules. A concept of `Cohen-Macaulay in codimension c' is defined and characterized for arbitrary finitely generated modules and coherent sheaves. For the face ring of an r-dimensional complex Delta, it is equivalent to nonsingularity of Delta in dimension r-c; for a coherent sheaf on projective space, this condition is shown to be equivalent to the same condition on any single generic hyperplane section. The characterization of nonsingularity in dimension m via finite local cohomology thus generalizes from face rings to arbitrary graded modules.

Gorenstein rings through face rings of manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
The face ring of a homology manifold (without boundary) modulo a generic system of parameters is studied. Its socle is computed and it is verified that a particular quotient of this ring is Gorenstein. This fact is used to prove that the sphere $g$-conjecture implies all enumerative consequences of its far reaching generalization (due to Kalai) to manifolds. A special case of Kalai's manifold $g$-conjecture is established for homology manifolds that have a codimension-two face whose link contains many vertices.

Applications of Klee's Dehn-Sommerville relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use Klee's Dehn-Sommerville relations and other results on face numbers of homology manifolds without boundary to (i) prove Kalai's conjecture providing lower bounds on the f-vectors of an even-dimensional manifold with all but the middle Betti number vanishing, (ii) verify Kühnel's conjecture that gives an upper bound on the middle Betti number of a 2k-dimensional manifold in terms of k and the number of vertices, and (iii) partially prove Kühnel's conjecture providing upper bounds on other Betti numbers of odd- and even-dimensional manifolds. For manifolds with boundary, we derive an extension of Klee's Dehn-Sommerville relations and strengthen Kalai's result on the number of their edges.

f-Vectors of 3-Manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1970, Walkup completely described the set of $f$-vectors for the four 3-manifolds $S^3$, $S^2 twist S^1$, $S^2 \times S^1$, and $RP^3$. We improve one of Walkup's main restricting inequalities on the set of $f$-vectors of 3-manifolds. As a consequence of a bound by Novik and Swartz, we also derive a new lower bound on the number of vertices that are needed for a combinatorial $d$-manifold in terms of its $β_1$-coefficient, which partially settles a conjecture of Kühnel. Enumerative results and a search for small triangulations with bistellar flips allow us, in combination with the new bounds, to completely determine the set of $f$-vectors for twenty further 3-manifolds, that is, for the connected sums of sphere bundles $(S^2 \times S^1)^{# k}$ and twisted sphere bundles $(S^2 twist S^1)^{# k}$, where $k=2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,11,14$. For many more 3-manifolds of different geometric types we provide small triangulations and a partial description of their set of $f$-vectors. Moreover, we show that the 3-manifold $RP^3 # RP^3$ has (at least) two different minimal $g$-vectors.

Socles of Buchsbaum modules, complexes and posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The socle of a graded Buchsbaum module is studied and is related to its local cohomology modules. This algebraic result is then applied to face enumeration of Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. In particular, new necessary conditions on face numbers and Betti numbers of such complexes and posets are established. These conditions are used to settle in the affirmative Kühnel's conjecture for the maximum value of the Euler characteristic of a $2k$-dimensional simplicial manifold on $n$ vertices as well as Kalai's conjecture providing a lower bound on the number of edges of a simplicial manifold in terms of its dimension, number of vertices, and the first Betti number.

Face enumeration - from spheres to manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a number of new restrictions on the enumerative properties of homology manifolds and semi-Eulerian complexes and posets. These include a determination of the affine span of the fine $h$-vector of balanced semi-Eulerian complexes and the toric $h$-vector of semi-Eulerian posets. The lower bounds on simplicial homology manifolds, when combined with higher dimensional analogues of Walkup's 3-dimensional constructions \cite{Wal}, allow us to give a complete characterization of the $f$-vectors of arbitrary simplicial triangulations of $S^1 \times S^3, \C P^2,$ $ K3$ surfaces, and $(S^2 \times S^2) # (S^2 \times S^2).$ We also establish a principle which leads to a conjecture for homology manifolds which is almost logically equivalent to the $g$-conjecture for homology spheres. Lastly, we show that with sufficiently many vertices, every triangulable homology manifold without boundary of dimension three or greater can be triangulated in a 2-neighborly fashion.

Coloring complexes and arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Steingrimsson's coloring complex and Jonsson's unipolar complex are interpreted in terms of hyperplane arrangements. This viewpoint leads to short proofs that all coloring complexes and a large class of unipolar complexes have convex ear decompositions. These convex ear decompositions impose strong new restrictions on the chromatic polynomials of all finite graphs. Similar results are obtained for characteristic polynomials of submatroids of type B_n arrangements.

Enumerative properties of triangulations of spherical bundles over S^1

We give a complete characterization of all possible pairs (v,e), where v is the number of vertices and e is the number of edges, of any simplicial triangulation of an S^k-bundle over S^1. The main point is that Kuhnel's triangulations of S^{2k+1} x S^1 and the nonorientable S^{2k}-bundle over S^1 are unique among all triangulations of (n-1)-dimensional homology manifolds with first Betti number nonzero, vanishing second Betti number, and 2n+1 vertices.

Face ring multiplicity via CM-connectivity sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolution of the face ring via the Cohen-Macaulay connectivity of the skeletons of the complex.

Inequalities for the h- and flag h-vectors of geometric lattices
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry, Vol. 32, No. 4, Nov. 2004, pgs 533-548 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the order complex of a geometric lattice has a convex ear decomposition. As a consequence, if D(L) is the order complex of a rank (r+1) geometric lattice L, then for all i \leq r/2 the h-vector of D(L) satisfies h(i-1) \leq h(i) and h(i) \leq h(r-i). We also obtain several inequalities for the flag h-vector of D(L) by analyzing the weak Bruhat order of the symmetric group. As an application, we obtain a zonotopal cd-analogue of the Dowling-Wilson characterization of geometric lattices which minimize Whitney numbers of the second kind. In addition, we are able to give a combinatorial flag h-vector proof of h(i-1) \leq h(i) when i \leq (2/7)(r + 5/2).
