An involution for a Catalan-tangent number identity
We provide an involution proof of a Catalan-tangent number identity arising from the study of peak algebra that was found by Aliniaeifard and Li. In the course, we find a new combinatorial identity for the tangent numbers $T_{2n+1}$: $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}(-1)^{k}{2n+1\choose 2k}2^{2n-2k}T_{2k+1}=(-1)^nT_{2n+1}. $$ Moreover, we derive two different $q$-analogs of the above identity from the combinatorial perspective.
Configuration spaces and peak representations
Within the group algebras of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups, one has their descent algebras and families of Eulerian idempotents. These idempotents are known to generate group representations with topological interpretations, as the cohomology of configuration spaces of types A and B. We provide an analogous cohomological interpretation for the representations generated by idempotents in the peak algebra, called the peak representations. We describe the peak representations as sums of Thrall's higher Lie characters, give Hilbert series and branching rule recursions for them, and discuss a connection to Jordan brackets.
An identity relating Catalan numbers to tangent numbers with arithmetic applications
We prove a combinatorial identity relating Catalan numbers to tangent numbers arising from the study of peak algebra that was conjectured by Aliniaeifard and Li. This identity leads to the discovery of the intriguing identity $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}{2n\choose 2k+1}2^{2n-2k}(-1)^{k}E_{2k+1}=2^{2n+1}, $$ where $E_{2k+1}$ denote the tangent numbers. Interestingly, the latter identity can be applied to prove that $(n + 1)E_{2n+1}$ is divisible by $2^{2n}$ and the quotient is an odd number, a fact whose traditional proofs require significant calculations. Moreover, we find a natural $q$-analog of the latter identity with a combinatorial proof. This $q$-identity can be applied to prove Foata's divisibility property of the $q$-tangent numbers, which responds to a problem raised by Schützenberger.
The peak algebra in noncommuting variables
The well-known descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{QSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, $\mathrm{QSym}$, and the peak algebra $Π$ were originally defined by Stembridge in 1997. We introduce their noncommutative analogues, the labelled descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{NCQSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, $\mathrm{NCQSym}$, and the peak algebra in noncommuting variables $\mathrm{NC}Π$. Then, we define the Hopf algebra of Schur $Q$-functions in noncommuting variables. We show that our generalizations possess many properties analogous to their classical counterparts. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the expansion of certain elements of $\mathrm{NC}Π$ in the monomial basis of $\mathrm{NCQSym}$ satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville equation of Bayer and Billera. In the end, we give representation-theoretic interpretations of the descent-to-peak map for the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.
Expanding quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions into peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions
The dual immaculate and Young quasisymmetric Schur bases of quasisymmetric functions possess analogues in the peak algebra: respectively, the quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions and the peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We show elements of the former basis expand into the latter basis with nonnegative coefficients.

The kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{st}}$ of a descent statistic $\operatorname{st}$, introduced by Grinberg, is a subspace of the algebra $\operatorname{QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions defined in terms of $\operatorname{st}$-equivalent compositions, and is an ideal of $\operatorname{QSym}$ if and only if $\operatorname{st}$ is shuffle-compatible. This paper continues the study of kernels of descent statistics, with emphasis on the peak set $\operatorname{Pk}$ and the peak number $\operatorname{pk}$. The kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{Pk}}$ in particular is precisely the kernel of the canonical projection from $\operatorname{QSym}$ to Stembridge's algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions, and is the orthogonal complement of Nyman's peak algebra. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining spanning sets and linear bases for the kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{st}}$ of any descent statistic $\operatorname{st}$ in terms of fundamental quasisymmetric functions, and give characterizations of $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{Pk}}$ and $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{pk}}$ in terms of the fundamental basis and the monomial basis of $\operatorname{QSym}$. Our results imply that the peak set and peak number statistics are $M$-binomial, confirming a conjecture of Grinberg.

In prior joint work with Lewis, we developed a theory of enriched set-valued $P$-partitions to construct a $K$-theoretic generalization of the Hopf algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions. Here, we situate this object in a diagram of six Hopf algebras, providing a shifted version of the diagram of $K$-theoretic combinatorial Hopf algebras studied by Lam and Pylyavskyy. This allows us to describe new $K$-theoretic analogues of the classical peak algebra. We also study the Hopf algebras generated by Ikeda and Naruse's $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions, as well as their duals. Along the way, we derive several product, coproduct, and antipode formulas and outline a number of open problems and conjectures.
Enriched toric $[\vec{D}]$-partitions
This paper develops the theory of enriched toric $[\vec{D}]$-partitions. Whereas Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions give rises to the peak algebra which is a subring of the ring of quasi-symmetric functions $\text{QSym}$, our enriched toric $[\vec{D}]$-partitions will generate the cyclic peak algebra which is a subring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions $\text{cQSym}$. In the same manner as the peak set of linear permutations appears when considering enriched $P$-partitions, the cyclic peak set of cyclic permutations plays an important role in our theory. The associated order polynomial is discussed based on this framework.

We introduce a general method for constructing modules for $0$-Hecke algebras and supermodules for $0$-Hecke-Clifford algebras from diagrams of boxes in the plane, and give formulas for the images of these modules in the algebras of quasisymmetric functions and peak functions under the relevant characteristic map. As initial applications, we resolve a question of Jing and Li (2015), introduce a new basis of the peak algebra analogous to the quasisymmetric Schur functions, uncover a new connection between Schur $Q$-functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions, give a representation-theoretic interpretation of families of tableaux used in constructing certain functions in the peak algebra, and establish a common framework for known $0$-Hecke module interpretations of bases of quasisymmetric functions.
Peak algebras in combinatorial Hopf algebras
The peak algebra is originally introduced by Stembridge using enriched $P$-partitions. Using the character theory by Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile, the peak algebra is also the image of $Θ$, the universal morphism between certain combinatorial Hopf algebras. We extend the notion of peak algebras and theta maps to shuffle, tensor, and symmetric algebras. As examples, we study the peak algebras of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables and the graded associated Hopf algebra on permutations. We also introduce a new shuffle basis of quasi-symmetric functions that its elements are the eigenfunctions of $Θ$. Using this new basis, we show that the peak algebra is the space spanned by the set of shuffle basis elements indexed by compositions whose all parts are odd.

The shuffle product has a connection with several useful permutation statistics such as descent and peak, and corresponds to the multiplication operation in the corresponding descent and peak algebras. In their recent work, Gessel and Zhuang formalized the notion of shuffle-compatibility and studied various permutation statistics from this viewpoint. They further conjectured that any shuffle compatible permutation statistic is a descent statistic. In this note we construct a counter-example to this conjecture.
A Context-free Grammar for Peaks and Double Descents of Permutations

This paper is concerned with the joint distribution of the number of exterior peaks and the number of proper double descents over permutations on $[n] =\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. The notion of exterior peaks of a permutation was introduced by Aguiar, Bergeron and Nyman in their study of the peak algebra. Gessel obtained the generating function of the number of permutations on $[n]$ with a given number of exterior peaks. On the other hand, by establishing differential equations, Elizalde and Noy derived the generating function for the number of permutations on $[n]$ with a given number of proper double descents. Barry and Basset independently deduced the generating function of the number of permutations on $[n]$ with no proper double descents. We find a context-free grammar which can be used to compute the number of permutations on $[n]$ with a given number of exterior peaks and a given number of proper double descents. Based on the grammar, the recurrence relation of the number of permutations on $[n]$ with a given number of exterior peaks can be easily obtained. Moreover, we use the grammatical calculus to derive the generating function without solving differential equations. Our formula reduces to the formulas of Gessel, Elizalde-Noy, Barry, and Basset. Finally, from the grammar we establish a relationship between our generating function and the generating function of the joint distribution of the number of peaks and the number of double descent derived by Carlitz and Scoville.
Theta maps for combinatorial Hopf algebras
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are generalizations of the peak algebra. We also indicate a criterion to check whether a map is a Theta map. Moreover, precise descriptions of the Theta maps for the following Hopf algebras will be presented, Hopf subalgebras of quasisymmetric functions, commutative and co-commutative Hopf algebras, and theta maps for a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{V}$ on permutations.

The number of alternating runs is a natural permutation statistic. We show it can be used to define some commutative subalgebras of the symmetric group algebra, and more precisely of the descent algebra. The Eulerian peak algebras naturally appear as subalgebras of our run algebras. We also calculate the orthogonal idempotents for run algebras in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions.

The representation theory of 0-Hecke-Clifford algebras as a degenerate case is not semisimple and also with rich combinatorial meaning. Bergeron et al. have proved that the Grothendieck ring of the category of finitely generated supermodules of 0-Hecke-Clifford algebras is isomorphic to the algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions defined by Stembridge. In this paper we further study the category of finitely generated projective supermodules and clarify the correspondence between it and the peak algebra of symmetric groups. In particular, two kinds of restriction rules for induced projective supermodules are obtained. After that, we consider the corresponding Heisenberg double and its Fock representation to prove that the ring of peak quasisymmetric functions is free over the subring of symmetric functions spanned by Schur's Q-functions.

We construct a lift of Schur's Q-functions to the peak algebra of the symmetric group, called the noncommutative Schur Q-functions, and extract from them a new natural basis with several nice properties such as the positive right-Pieri rule, combinatorial expansion, etc. Dually, we get a basis of the Stembridge algebra of peak functions refining Schur's P-functions in a simple way.

We give a new characterization of the peak subalgebra of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions and use this to construct a new basis for this subalgebra. As an application of these results we obtain a combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials which holds in complete generality and is simpler and more explicit than any existing one. We then show that, in a certain sense, this formula cannot be simplified.

We generalize chain enumeration in graded partially ordered sets by relaxing the graded, poset and Eulerian requirements. The resulting balanced digraphs, which include the classical Eulerian posets having an $R$-labeling, imply the existence of the (non-homogeneous) ${\bf cd}$-index, a key invariant for studying inequalities for the flag vector of polytopes. Mirroring Alexander duality for Eulerian posets, we show an analogue of Alexander duality for balanced digraphs. For Bruhat graphs of Coxeter groups, an important family of balanced graphs, our theory gives elementary proofs of the existence of the complete ${\bf cd}$-index and its properties. We also introduce the rising and falling quasisymmetric functions of a labeled acyclic digraph and show they are Hopf algebra homomorphisms mapping balanced digraphs to the Stembridge peak algebra. We conjecture nonnegativity of the ${\bf cd}$-index for acyclic digraphs having a balanced linear edge labeling.
The (1-E)-transform in combinatorial Hopf algebras

We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239].
From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. The case of WQSym leads to similar subalgebras of the Solomon-Tits algebras. In FQSym, the study of the transformation boils down to a simple solution of the Tsetlin library in the uniform case.

The representation theory (idempotents, quivers, Cartan invariants and Loewy series) of the higher order unital peak algebras is investigated. On the way, we obtain new interpretations and generating functions for the idempotents of descent algebras introduced in [F. Saliola, J. Algebra 320 (2008) 3866.]
