Angle sums on polytopes and polytopal complexes
We will study the angle sums of polytopes, listed in the $α$-vector, working to exploit the analogy between the f-vector of faces in each dimension and the alpha-vector of angle sums. The Gram and Perles relations on the $α$-vector are analogous to the Euler and Dehn-Sommerville relations on the f-vector. First we describe the spaces spanned by the the alpha-vector and the $α$-f-vectors of certain classes of polytopes. Families of polytopes are constructed whose angle sums span the spaces of polytopes defined by the Gram and Perles equations. This shows that the dimension of the affine span of the space of angle sums of simplices is floor[(d-1)/2], and that of the combined angle sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes are d-1 and 2d-3, respectively. Next we consider angle sums of polytopal complexes. We define the angle characteristic on the alpha-vector in analogy to the Euler characteristic. We show that the changes in the two correspond and that, in the case of certain odd-dimensional polytopal complexes, the angle characteristic is half the Euler characteristic. Finally, we consider spherical and hyperbolic polytopes and polytopal complexes. Spherical and hyperbolic analogs of the Gram relation and a spherical analog of the Perles relation are known, and we show the hyperbolic analog of the Perles relations in a number of cases. Proving this relation for simplices of dimension greater than 3 would finish the proof of this result. Also, we show how constructions on spherical and hyperbolic polytopes lead to corresponding changes in the angle characteristic and Euler characteristic.

Vector spaces spanned by the angle sums of polytopes
In this paper, we will describe the space spanned by the angle-sums of polytopes, recorded in the alpha-vector. We will consider the angles sums of simplices and the angles sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes. We will construct families of polytopes whose angle sums span the spaces of polytopes defined by the Gram and Perles equations, analogues of the Euler and Dehn-Sommerville equations. We show that the dimensions of the affine span of the space of angle sums of simplices is floor[(d-1)/2] + 1, and that of the angle sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes are d-1 and 2d-3 respectively.

Faces and bases: Dehn-Sommerville type relations
We review several linear algebraic aspects of the Dehn-Sommerville relations and relate redundant analogues of the f- and h-vectors describing the subsets of a simplex 2^{1,...,m} that satisfy Dehn-Sommerville type relations to integer points contained in some rational polytopes.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations
Published in Compositio Mathematica, 142, January 2006, 1--30 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses two canonical Hopf subalgebras on which the character $ζ$ is even (respectively, odd). The odd subalgebra is defined by certain canonical relations which we call the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations. We show that, for $H=QSym$, the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations are the Bayer-Billera relations and the odd subalgebra is the peak Hopf algebra of Stembridge. We prove that $QSym$ is the product (in the categorical sense) of its even and odd Hopf subalgebras. We also calculate the odd subalgebras of various related combinatorial Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations, the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees, the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and of non-commutative symmetric functions.

h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets
Published in Adv. Math. 194 (2005), 332--344 • Search Publication
As is well known, h-vectors of simple (or simplicial) convex polytopes are characterized. In fact, those h-vectors must satisfy Dehn-Sommerville equations and some other inequalities. Simple convex polytopes determine Gorenstein* simplicial posets and h-vectors are defined for simplicial posets. It is known that h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets must satisfy Dehn-Sommerville equations and that every component in the h-vectors must be non-negative. In this paper we will show that h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets must satisfy one more subtle condition conjectured by R. Stanley and complete characterization of those h-vectors. Our proof is purely algebraic but the idea of the proof stems from topology.

The cd-index of the Boolean lattice
We study some properties of the {\bf cd}-index of the Boolean lattice. They are extremely similar to the properties of the {\ab}-index, or equivalently, the flag $h$-vector of the Boolean lattice and hence may be viewed as their {\bf cd}-analogues. We define a different algebra structure on the polynomial algebra $k < \cv, \dv>$ and give a derivation on this algebra. It is of significance for the Boolean lattice and forms our main tool. Using similar methods, we also prove some results for the {\bf cd}-index of the cubical lattice. We show that the Dehn-Sommerville relations for the flag $f$-vector of an Eulerian poset are equivalent to certain simple identities that exist in our algebra.

Projections, shellings and duality
Projection maps which appear in the theory of buildings and oriented matroids are closely related to the notion of shellability. This was first observed by Bj{ö}rner. In this paper, we give an axiomatic treatment of either concept and show their equivalence. We also axiomatize duality in this setting. As applications of these ideas, we prove a duality theorem on buildings and give a geometric interpretation of the flag $h$ vector. The former may be regarded as a $q$-analogue of the Dehn-Sommerville equations. We also briefly discuss the connection with the random walks introduced by Bidigare, Hanlon and Rockmore.

Generalizations of Eulerian partially ordered sets, flag numbers, and the Mobius function
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partially ordered set is r-thick if every nonempty open interval contains at least r elements. This paper studies the flag vectors of graded, r-thick posets and shows the smallest convex cone containing them is isomorphic to the cone of flag vectors of all graded posets. It also defines a k-analogue of the Mobius function and k-Eulerian posets, which are 2k-thick. Several characterizations of k-Eulerian posets are given. The generalized Dehn-Sommerville equations are proved for flag vectors of k-Eulerian posets. A new inequality is proved to be valid and sharp for rank 8 Eulerian posets.

Moment-angle complexes and combinatorics of simplicial manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $ρ:(D^2)^m\to I^m$ be the orbit map for the diagonal action of the torus $T^m$ on the unit poly-disk $(D^2)^m$, $I^m=[0,1]^m$ is the unit cube. Let $C$ be a cubical subcomplex in $I^m$. The moment-angle complex $\ma(C)$ is a $T^m$-invariant bigraded cellular decomposition of the subset $ρ^{-1}(C)\subset(D^2)^m$ with cells corresponding to the faces of $C$. Different combinatorial problems concerning cubical complexes and related combinatorial objects can be treated by studying the equivariant topology of corresponding moment-angle complexes. Here we consider moment-angle complexes defined by canonical cubical subdivisions of simplicial complexes. We describe relations between the combinatorics of simplicial complexes and the bigraded cohomology of corresponding moment-angle complexes. In the case when the simplicial complex is a simplicial manifold the corresponding moment-angle complex has an orbit consisting of singular points. The complement of an invariant neighbourhood of this orbit is a manifold with boundary. The relative Poincare duality for this manifold implies the generalized Dehn-Sommerville equations for the number of faces of simplicial manifolds.
