A labeling of the Simplex-Lattice Hypergraph with at most 2 colors on each hyperedge
This paper provides a positive answer to the question of Mirzakhani and Vondrak that asks if there is a Sperner-admissible labeling of the simplex-lattice hypergraph such that each hyperedge uses at most 2 colors.
Sperner's colorings of hypergraphs arising from edgewise triangulations
We investigate Sperner's labelings of $H^π_{k,q}$, the hypergraph whose hyperedges are facets of the edgewise triangulation of a $(k-1)$-simplex defined by a permutation $π\in \mathbb{S}_{k-1}$. Mirzakhani and Vondr\' ak showed that the greedy coloring of $H^{\mathrm{Id}}_{k,q}$ produces the maximal number of monochromatic hyperedges. The line graph of $H_{k,q}^π$ is built from the copies of the graph $G_π$ that represents which subsets of consecutive numbers of $[k-1]$ are contiguous in $π$. We characterize these graphs in terms of dissections a regular $k$-gon and also show how they encode the adjacency relation between a hypersimplex and the facets of its alcoved triangulation. The natural action of the dihedral group $D_k$ on a regular $k$-gon and graphs $G_π$ extends on the group of permutations $\mathbb S_{k-1}$. Independent sets of the graphs $G_π$ of the permutations that are not invariant under the rotation are used to define a class of Sperner's colorings that produce more monochromatic hyperedges then the greedy colorings. This colorings are also optimal for a certain permutations.
Lower bounds on the number of envy-free divisions
We analyze lower bounds for the number of envy-free divisions, in the classical Woodall-Stormquist setting and in a non-classical case, when envy-freeness is combined with the equipartition of a measure.
1. In the first scenario, there are $r$ hungry players, and the cake (that is, the segment $[0,1]$) is cut into $r$ pieces. Then there exist at least two different envy-free divisions. This bound is sharp: for each $r$, we present an example of preferences such that there are exactly two envy-free divisions.
2. In the second (hybrid) scenario, there are $p$ not necessarily hungry players ($p$ is a prime) and a continuous measure $μ$ on $[0,1]$. The cake is cut into $2p-1$ pieces, the pieces are allocated to $p$ boxes (with some restrictions) and the players choose the boxes. Then there exists at least $\binom{2p-1}{p-1} \cdot 2^{2-p}$ envy-free divisions such that the measure $μ$ is equidistributed among the players.
Shelling of links and star clusters in edgewise subdivision of a simplex
We show that the combinatorial types of the links of the vertices in the edgewise triangulation $T_{k,q}$ of a $(k-1)$-simplex are encoded by the partitions of $k$. Each of these complexes is isomorphic to a subcomplex of the barycentric subdivision of the boundary of a $(k-1)$-simplex, and the containment relations among them are described by a new poset on the set of partitions of $k$. We compute the $h$-vectors of these complexes and determine the number of vertices of $T_{k,q}$ whose links are the same (correspond to the same partition).
The combinatorial type of the link of an $(s-1)$-dimensional face of $T_{k,q}$ corresponds to a partition $(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_s)$ of $k$ into $s$ parts, together with additional partitions of each $λ_i$. We also enumerate the combinatorial types of all $m$-dimensional complexes that arise as the links in edgewise triangulations.
A new permutation statistic, \textit{the faithful initial part}, is introduced and used to describe the star cluster of a facet of $T_{k,q}$. By examining a specific shelling of this star cluster, we prove that the $i$-th entry of its $h$-vector
counts the number of permutations of $[k]$ with exactly $i$ descents,
taking into account the
faithful initial part as the multiplicity. Finally, we
describe a concrete shelling order for $T_{k,q}$, give a
combinatorial interpretation of its $h$-vector, and derive an explicit formula for it.
Cooperative envy-free division
Relying on configuration spaces and equivariant topology, we study a general "cooperative envy-free division problem". A group of players want to cut a "cake" $I=[0,1]$ and divide among themselves the pieces in an envy-free manner. Once the cake is cut and served in plates on a round table (at most one piece per plate), each player makes her choice by pointing at one (or several) plates she prefers. The novelty is that her choice may depend on the whole "allocation configuration". In particular, a player may choose an empty plate (possibly preferring one of the empty plates over the other), and take into account not only the content of her preferred plate, but also the content of the neighbouring plates. We show that if the number of players is a prime power, in this setting an envy-free division exists under standard assumptions that the preferences are closed.
Optimal colored Tverberg theorems for prime powers
The type A colored Tverberg theorem of Blagojević, Matschke, and Ziegler provides optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem, under the condition that the number of intersecting rainbow simplices is a prime number. We extend this result to an optimal, type A colored Tverberg theorem for multisets of colored points, which is valid for each prime power $r=p^k$. One of the principal new ideas is to replace the ambient simplex $Δ^N$, used in the original Tverberg theorem, by an "abridged simplex" of smaller dimension, and to compensate for this reduction by allowing vertices to repeatedly appear a controlled number of times in different rainbow simplices. Configuration spaces, used in the proof, are combinatorial pseudomanifolds which can be represented as multiple chessboard complexes. Our main topological tool is the Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions.
Generalized chessboard complexes and discrete Morse theory
Chessboard complexes and their generalizations, as objects, and Discrete Morse theory, as a tool, are presented as a unifying theme linking different areas of geometry, topology, algebra and combinatorics. Edmonds and Fulkerson bottleneck (minmax) theorem is proved and interpreted as a result about a critical point of a discrete Morse function on the Bier sphere of an associated simplicial complex $K$. We illustrate the use of "standard discrete Morse functions" on generalized chessboard complexes by proving a connectivity result for chessboard complexes with multiplicities. Applications include new Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type results for $j$-wise disjoint partitions of a simplex.
Colored Tverberg problem, extensions and new results

We prove a "multiple colored Tverberg theorem" and a "balanced colored Tverberg theorem", by applying different methods, tools and ideas. The proof of the first theorem uses multiple chessboard complexes (as configuration spaces) and Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions. The proof of the second result relies on high connectivity of the configuration space, established by discrete Morse theory.
Splitting necklaces, with constraints
We prove several versions of N. Alon's "necklace-splitting theorem", subject to additional constraints, as illustrated by the following results. (1) The "almost equicardinal necklace-splitting theorem" claims that, without increasing the number of cuts, one guarantees the existence of a fair splitting such that each thief is allocated (approximately) one and the same number of pieces of the necklace (including "degenerate pieces" if they exist), provided the number of thieves $r=p^ν$ is a prime power. (2) The "binary splitting theorem" claims that if $r=2^d$ and the thieves are associated with the vertices of a $d$-cube then, without increasing the number of cuts, one can guarantee the existence of a fair splitting such that adjacent pieces are allocated to thieves that share an edge of the cube. This result provides a positive answer to the "binary splitting necklace conjecture" of Asada at al. (Conjecture 2.11 in [7]) in the case $r=2^d$. (3) An interesting variation arises when the thieves have their own individual preferences. We prove several "envy-free fair necklace-splitting theorems" of various level of generality. By specialization we obtain numerous corollaries, among them envy-free versions of (a) "almost equicardinal splitting theorem", (b) "necklace-splitting theorem for $r$-unavoidable preferences", (c) "envy-free binary splitting theorem", etc. As a corollary we also obtain a recent result of Avvakumov and Karasev [1] about envy-free divisions where players may prefer an empty part of the necklace.
The cubical matching complex revisited
Ehrenborg noted that all tilings of a bipartite planar graph are encoded by its cubical matching complex and claimed that this complex is collapsible. We point out to an oversight in his proof and explain why these complexes can be the union of collapsible complexes. Also, we prove that all links in these complexes are suspensions up to homotopy. Furthermore, we extend the definition of a cubical matching complex to planar graphs that are not necessarily bipartite, and show that these complexes are either contractible or a disjoint union of contractible complexes.
For a simple connected region that can be tiled with dominoes ($2\times 1$ and $1\times 2$) and $2\times 2$ squares, let $f_i$ denote the number of tilings with exactly $i$ squares. We prove that $f_0-f_1+f_2-f_3+\cdots=1$ (established by Ehrenborg) is the only linear relation for the numbers $f_i$.
A Tverberg type theorem for collectively unavoidable complexes
We prove (Theorem 2.4) that the symmetrized deleted join $SymmDelJoin(\mathcal{K})$ of a "balanced family" $\mathcal{K} = \langle K_i\rangle_{i=1}^r$ of collectively $r$-unavoidable subcomplexes of $2^{[m]}$ is $(m-r-1)$-connected. As a consequence we obtain a Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type result (Theorem 3.2) which is more conceptual and more general then previously known results. Already the case $r=2$ of Theorem 3.2 seems to be new as an extension of the classical Van Kampen-Flores theorem. The main tool used in the paper is R. Forman's discrete Morse theory.
Combinatorics of `unavoidable complexes'
The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[n]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [n]$ of $[n]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type, and inspired by the `constraint method' of Blagojević, Frick, and Ziegler, arXiv:1401.0690 [math.CO], we study the combinatorics of $r$-unavoidable complexes.
Alexander $r$-tuples and Bier complexes

Alexander $r$-tuples are introduced as a common generalization of pairs of Alexander dual complexes (Alexander $2$-tuples) and $r$-unavoidable complexes of Blagojević, Frick and Ziegler. The associated "Bier complexes" include both the Bier spheres and "optimal multiple chessboard complexes" as interesting, special cases. Our main result is Theorem 4.3 saying that (1) the $r$-fold deleted join of Alexander $r$-tuple is a pure complex homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, and (2) the $r$-fold deleted join of a collectively unavoidable $r$-tuple is $(n-r-1)$-connected. We also give a complete classification (Theorem 5.1 and Corollary 5.2) of Alexander $r$-tuples and Bier complexes.
Topology of unavoidable complexes
The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[m]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [m]$ of $[m]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. We say that a complex $K$ is globally $r$-non-embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^d$ if for each continuous map $f: | K| \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$ there exist $r$ vertex disjoint faces $σ_1,\ldots, σ_r$ of $| K|$ such that $f(σ_1)\cap\ldots\cap f(σ_r)\neq\emptyset$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type we prove several results (Theorems 3.6, 3.9, 4.6) which link together the combinatorics and topology of these two classes of complexes. One of our central observations (Theorem 4.6), summarizing and extending results of G. Schild, B. Grünbaum and many others, is that interesting examples of (globally) $r$-non-embeddable complexes can be found among the joins $K = K_1\ast\ldots\ast K_s$ of $r$-unavoidable complexes.
Symmetric multiple chessboard complexes and a new theorem of Tverberg type
We prove a new theorem of Tverberg type which confirms the conjecture of Blagojevic, Frick, and Ziegler about the existence of "balanced Tverberg partitions" (Conjecture 6.6 in, Tverberg plus constraints, Bull. London Math. Soc., 46 (2014) 953-967). The proof relies on the connectivity and shellability properties of multiple chessboard complexes and their symmetric analogues.
Multiple chessboard complexes and the colored Tverberg problem
Following D.B. Karaguezian, V. Reiner, and M.L. Wachs (Matching Complexes, Bounded Degree Graph Complexes, and Weight Spaces of $GL$-Complexes, Journal of Algebra 2001) we study the connectivity degree and shellability of multiple chessboard complexes. Our central new results (Theorems 3.2 and 4.4) provide sharp connectivity bounds relevant to applications in Tverberg type problems where multiple points of the same color are permitted. These results also provide a foundation for the new results of Tverberg-van Kampen-Flores type, as announced in arXiv:1502.05290 [math.CO].

The generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations determine the odd subalgebra of the combinatorial Hopf algebra. We introduce a class of eulerian hypergraphs that satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations for the combinatorial Hopf algebra of hypergraphs. We characterize a wide class of eulerian hypergraphs according to the combinatorics of underlying clutters. The analogous results hold for simplicial complexes by the isomorphism which is induced from the correspondence of clutters and simplicial complexes.

The question of shellability of complexes of directed trees was asked by R. Stanley. D. Kozlov showed that the existence of a complete source in a directed graph provides a shelling of its complex of directed trees. We will show that this property gives a shelling that is straightforward in some sense. Among the simplicial polytopes, only the crosspolytopes allow such a shelling. Furthermore, we show that the complex of directed trees of a complete double directed graph is a union of suitable spheres. We also investigate shellability of the maximal pure skeleton of a complex of directed trees. Also, we prove that is vertex-decomposable. For these complexes we describe the set of generating facets.
