Indecomposability of the median hypersimplex and polytopality of the hemi-icosahedral Bier sphere
We prove that the median hypersimplex $Δ_{2k,k}$ is Minkowski indecomposable, i.e. it cannot be expressed as a non-trivial Minkowski sum $Δ_{2k,k} = P+Q$, where $P\neq λΔ_{2k,k}\neq Q$. We obtain as a corollary that $Δ_{2k,k}$ represents a ray in the submodular cone (the deformation cone of the permutahedron). Building on the previously developed geometric methods and extensive computer search, we exhibit a twelve vertex, $4$-dimensional polytopal realization of the Bier sphere of the hemi-icosahedron, the vertex minimal triangulation of the real projective plane.
Polytopality of simple games
The Bier sphere $Bier(\mathcal{G}) = Bier(K) = K\ast_ΔK^\circ$ and the canonical fan $Fan(Γ) = Fan(K)$ are combinatorial/geometric companions of a simple game $\mathcal{G} = (P,Γ)$ (equivalently the associated simplicial complex $K$), where $P$ is the set of players, $Γ\subseteq 2^P$ is the set of wining coalitions, and $K = 2^P\setminus Γ$ is the simplicial complex of losing coalitions. We characterize roughly weighted majority games as the games $Γ$ such that $Bier(\mathcal{G})$ (respectively $Fan(Γ)$) is canonically polytopal (canonically pseudo-polytopal) and show, by an experimental/theoretical argument, that all simple games with at most five players are polytopal.
Colored Tverberg Theorems for non-prime powers
We prove a relative of the Optimal (Type B)} Colored Tverberg theorem of Živaljević and Vrećica which modifies this results in two different ways. (1) Our result is valid if the number of rainbow faces is $q= p^n-1$, where $p$ is a prime. (2) The size of rainbow simplices satisfies the condition $\vert C_i\vert \in \{2q-2, 2q+1\}$ while in the original theorem $\vert C_i\vert = 2q-1$ for all $i$.

Bier spheres of extremal volume and generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Bier sphere $Bier(K) = K\ast_ΔK^\circ$, defined as the deleted join of a simplicial complex and its Alexander dual $K^\circ$, is a purely combinatorial object (abstract simplicial complex). Here we study a hidden geometry of Bier spheres by describing their natural geometric realizations, compute their volume, describe an effective criterion for their polytopality, and associate to $K$ a natural fan $Fan(K)$, related to the Braid fan. Along the way we establish a connection of Bier spheres of maximal volume with recent generalizations of the classical Van Kampen-Flores theorem and clarify the role of Bier spheres in the theory of generalized permutohedra.

Optimal colored Tverberg theorems for prime powers
The type A colored Tverberg theorem of Blagojević, Matschke, and Ziegler provides optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem, under the condition that the number of intersecting rainbow simplices is a prime number. We extend this result to an optimal, type A colored Tverberg theorem for multisets of colored points, which is valid for each prime power $r=p^k$. One of the principal new ideas is to replace the ambient simplex $Δ^N$, used in the original Tverberg theorem, by an "abridged simplex" of smaller dimension, and to compensate for this reduction by allowing vertices to repeatedly appear a controlled number of times in different rainbow simplices. Configuration spaces, used in the proof, are combinatorial pseudomanifolds which can be represented as multiple chessboard complexes. Our main topological tool is the Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions.
Generalized chessboard complexes and discrete Morse theory
Chessboard complexes and their generalizations, as objects, and Discrete Morse theory, as a tool, are presented as a unifying theme linking different areas of geometry, topology, algebra and combinatorics. Edmonds and Fulkerson bottleneck (minmax) theorem is proved and interpreted as a result about a critical point of a discrete Morse function on the Bier sphere of an associated simplicial complex $K$. We illustrate the use of "standard discrete Morse functions" on generalized chessboard complexes by proving a connectivity result for chessboard complexes with multiplicities. Applications include new Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type results for $j$-wise disjoint partitions of a simplex.
Colored Tverberg problem, extensions and new results

We prove a "multiple colored Tverberg theorem" and a "balanced colored Tverberg theorem", by applying different methods, tools and ideas. The proof of the first theorem uses multiple chessboard complexes (as configuration spaces) and Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions. The proof of the second result relies on high connectivity of the configuration space, established by discrete Morse theory.
Cyclohedron and Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes
We show that the cyclohedron (Bott-Taubes polytope) $W_n$ arises as the dual of a Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytope $KR(ρ)$, where $ρ$ is a quasi-metric (asymmetric distance function) satisfying strict triangle inequality. From a broader perspective, this phenomenon illustrates the relationship between a nestohedron $Δ_{\mathcal{\widehat{F}}}$ (associated to a building set $\mathcal{\widehat{F}}$) and its non-simple deformation $Δ_{\mathcal{F}}$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is an `irredundant' or `tight basis' of $\mathcal{\widehat{F}}$. Among the consequences are a new proof of a recent result of Gordon and Petrov (arXiv:1608.06848 [math.CO]) about $f$-vectors of generic Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes and an extension of a theorem of Gelfand, Graev, and Postnikov, about triangulations of the type A, positive root polytopes.
Combinatorics of `unavoidable complexes'
The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[n]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [n]$ of $[n]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type, and inspired by the `constraint method' of Blagojević, Frick, and Ziegler, arXiv:1401.0690 [math.CO], we study the combinatorics of $r$-unavoidable complexes.
Topology of unavoidable complexes
The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[m]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [m]$ of $[m]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. We say that a complex $K$ is globally $r$-non-embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^d$ if for each continuous map $f: | K| \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$ there exist $r$ vertex disjoint faces $σ_1,\ldots, σ_r$ of $| K|$ such that $f(σ_1)\cap\ldots\cap f(σ_r)\neq\emptyset$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type we prove several results (Theorems 3.6, 3.9, 4.6) which link together the combinatorics and topology of these two classes of complexes. One of our central observations (Theorem 4.6), summarizing and extending results of G. Schild, B. Grünbaum and many others, is that interesting examples of (globally) $r$-non-embeddable complexes can be found among the joins $K = K_1\ast\ldots\ast K_s$ of $r$-unavoidable complexes.

A glimpse into continuous combinatorics of posets, polytopes, and matroids
This is both an expository and research paper where we advocate a systematic study of continuous analogues of finite partially ordered sets, convex polytopes, oriented matroids, arrangements of subspaces, finite simplicial complexes, and other combinatorial structures. Among the illustrative examples are an Euler formula for a class of `continuous convex polytopes' (conjectured by Kalai and Wigderson), a duality result for a class of `continuous matroids', a calculation of the Euler characteristic of ideals in the Grassmannian poset (related to a problem of Gian-Carlo Rota), an exposition of the `homotopy complementation formula' for topological posets and its relation to the results of Kallel and Karoui about `weighted barycenter spaces' and a conjecture of Vassiliev about simplicial resolutions of singularities. We also include an extension of the index inequality (Sarkaria's inequality) based on interpreting diagrams of spaces as continuous posets.
Multiple chessboard complexes and the colored Tverberg problem
Following D.B. Karaguezian, V. Reiner, and M.L. Wachs (Matching Complexes, Bounded Degree Graph Complexes, and Weight Spaces of $GL$-Complexes, Journal of Algebra 2001) we study the connectivity degree and shellability of multiple chessboard complexes. Our central new results (Theorems 3.2 and 4.4) provide sharp connectivity bounds relevant to applications in Tverberg type problems where multiple points of the same color are permitted. These results also provide a foundation for the new results of Tverberg-van Kampen-Flores type, as announced in arXiv:1502.05290 [math.CO].
Signed polyomino tilings by n-in-line polyominoes and Groebner bases
Published • View PublicationBIB
Conway and Lagarias observed that a triangular region T(m) in a hexagonal lattice admits signed tiling by three-in-line polyominoes (tribones) if and only if m=9d-1 or m=9d for some integer d. We apply the theory of Groebner bases over integers to show that T(m) admits a signed tiling by n-in-line polyominoes (n-bones) if and only if m=dn^2-1 or m=dn^2 for some integer d. Explicit description of the Groebner basis allows us to calculate the "Groebner discrete volume" of a lattice region by applying the division algorithm to its `Newton polynomial'. Among immediate consequences is a description of the tile homology group of the $n$-in-line polyomino.
Symmetric polyomino tilings, tribones, ideals, and Groebner bases

We apply the theory of Groebner bases to the study of signed, symmetric polyomino tilings of planar domains. Complementing the results of Conway and Lagarias we show that the triangular regions T_N=T_{3k-1} and T_N=T_{3k} in a hexagonal lattice admit a signed tiling by three-in-line polyominoes (tribones) symmetric with respect to the 120 degrees rotation of the triangle if and only if either N=27r-1 or N=27r for some integer r.

Illumination complexes, Δ-zonotopes, and the polyhedral curtain theorem
Illumination complexes are examples of 'flat polyhedral complexes' which arise if several copies of a convex polyhedron (convex body) Q are glued together along some of their common faces (closed convex subsets of their boundaries). A particularly nice example arises if Q is a Δ-zonotope (generalized rhombic dodecahedron), known also as the dual of the difference body Δ - Δ of a simplex Δ, or the dual of the convex hull of the root system A_n. We demonstrate that the illumination complexes and their relatives can be used as 'configuration spaces', leading to new 'fair division theorems'. Among the central new results is the 'polyhedral curtain theorem' (Theorem 3) which is a relative of both the 'ham sandwich theorem' and the 'splitting necklaces theorem'.

Rotation number of a unimodular cycle: an elementary approach
We give an elementary proof of a formula expressing the rotation number of a cyclic unimodular sequence of lattice vectors in terms of arithmetically defined local quantities. The formula has been originally derived by A. Higashitani and M. Masuda (arXiv:1204.0088v2 [math.CO]) with the aid of the Riemann-Roch formula applied in the context of toric topology. They also demonstrated that a generalized versions of the "Twelve-point theorem" and a generalized Pick's formula are among the consequences or relatives of their result. Our approach emphasizes the role of 'discrete curvature invariants' μ(a,b,c), where {a,b} and {b,c} are bases of the lattice Z^2, as fundamental discrete invariants of 'modular lattice geometry'.

Computational topology of equipartitions by hyperplanes
We compute a primary cohomological obstruction to the existence of an equipartition for j mass distributions in R^d by two hyperplanes in the case 2d-3j = 1. The central new result is that such an equipartition always exists if d=6 2^k +2 and j=4 2^k+1 which for k=0 reduces to the main result of the paper P. Mani-Levitska et al., Topology and combinatorics of partitions of masses by hyperplanes, Adv. Math. 207 (2006), 266-296. This is an example of a genuine combinatorial geometric result which involves Z_4-torsion in an essential way and cannot be obtained by the application of either Stiefel-Whitney classes or cohomological index theories with Z_2 coefficients. The method opens a possibility of developing an "effective primary obstruction theory" based on $G$-manifold complexes, with applications in geometric combinatorics, discrete and computational geometry, and computational algebraic topology.

Oriented matroids and Ky Fan's theorem
L. Lovasz has shown that Sperner's combinatorial lemma admits a generalization involving a matroid defined on the set of vertices of the associated triangulation. Inspired by this result we prove that classical Ky Fan's theorem admits an oriented matroid generalization of similar nature. Ky Fan's theorem is obtained as a corollary if the underlying oriented matroid is chosen to be the alternating matroid C^{m,r} .

Groupoids in combinatorics -- applications of a theory of local symmetries
An objective of the theory of combinatorial groupoids is to introduce concepts like "holonomy", "parallel transport", "bundles", "combinatorial curvature" etc. in the context of simplicial (polyhedral) complexes, posets, graphs, polytopes, arrangements and other combinatorial objects. In this paper we give an exposition of some of the currently most active research themes in this area, offer a unified point of view, and provide a list of prospective applications in other fields together with a collection of related open problems.

Combinatorial groupoids, cubical complexes, and the Lovasz conjecture
A foundation is laid for a theory of combinatorial groupoids, allowing us to use concepts like ``holonomy'', ``parallel transport'', ``bundles'', ``combinatorial curvature'' etc. in the context of simplicial (polyhedral) complexes, posets, graphs, polytopes and other combinatorial objects. A new, holonomy-type invariant for cubical complexes is introduced, leading to a combinatorial ``Theorema Egregium'' for cubical complexes non-embeddable into cubical lattices. Parallel transport of Hom-complexes and maps is used as a tool for extending Babson-Kozlov-Lovasz graph coloring results to more general statements about non-degenerate maps (colorings) of simplicial complexes and graphs.
