Corrections to Classical Matrix Ensemble Moments, Non-Crossing Annular Pairings, and Ribbon Graphs
We elucidate a bijection between ribbon graphs on the real projective plane and non-crossing annular pairings that relate to the $1/N$ correction term of the GOE and LOE spectral moments. We also derive analogous objects for the $1/N^2$ correction terms of said moments and their equivalents for the GUE and LUE.

Cubic torus obstructions of small Betti number
The embeddability of graphs into surfaces has been studied for nearly a century. While the complete set of topological obstructions is known for the sphere and the real projective plane, there are only partial results for the torus. Here we present a theoretical classification of cubic torus obstructions with Betti number at most eight.

Higher-dimensional generalization of Youngs' theorem and circular colorings
In 1996, Youngs proved that any quadrangulation of the real projective plane is not 3-chromatic. This result has been extended in various directions over the years, including to other non-orientable closed surfaces, higher-dimensional analogues of quadrangulations and circular colorings. In this paper, we provide a generalization which yields some of these extensions of Youngs' theorem.
Indecomposability of the median hypersimplex and polytopality of the hemi-icosahedral Bier sphere
We prove that the median hypersimplex $Δ_{2k,k}$ is Minkowski indecomposable, i.e. it cannot be expressed as a non-trivial Minkowski sum $Δ_{2k,k} = P+Q$, where $P\neq λΔ_{2k,k}\neq Q$. We obtain as a corollary that $Δ_{2k,k}$ represents a ray in the submodular cone (the deformation cone of the permutahedron). Building on the previously developed geometric methods and extensive computer search, we exhibit a twelve vertex, $4$-dimensional polytopal realization of the Bier sphere of the hemi-icosahedron, the vertex minimal triangulation of the real projective plane.

Toroidal embeddings of cubic projective plane obstructions
Work of Glover and Huneke shows that a cubic graph embeds into the real projective plane if and only if it does not contain one of six topological minors called cubic projective plane obstructions. Here we classify up to equivalence the embeddings of these graphs into the torus.

Simplicial arrangements with few double points
In their solution to the orchard-planting problem, Green and Tao established a structure theorem which proves that in a line arrangement in the real projective plane with few double points, most lines are tangent to the dual curve of a cubic curve. We provide geometric arguments to prove that in the case of a simplicial arrangement, the aforementioned cubic curve cannot be irreducible. It follows that Grünbaum's conjectural asymptotic classification of simplicial arrangements holds under the additional hypothesis of a linear bound on the number of double points.

An Improved Turán Exponent for 2-Complexes
The topological Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_{\hom}(n,X)$ of a 2-dimensional simplicial complex $X$ asks for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex 3-uniform hypergraph containing no triangulation of $X$ as a subgraph. We prove that the Turán exponent of any such space $X$ is at most $8/3$, i.e., that $\mathrm{ex}_{\hom}(n,X)\leq Cn^{8/3}$ for some constant $C=C(X)$. This improves on the previous exponent of $3-1/5$, due to Keevash, Long, Narayanan, and Scott. Additionally, we present new streamlined proofs of the asymptotically tight upper bounds for the topological Turán numbers of the torus and real projective plane, which can be used to derive asymptotically tight upper bounds for all surfaces.

On possible symmetry groups of 27-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane

In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any triangulation of a $d$-manifold (without boundary) that is not homeomorphic to the sphere has at least $3d/2+3$ vertices. Moreover, triangulations with exactly $3d/2+3$ vertices may exist only for `manifolds like projective planes', which can have dimensions $2$, $4$, $8$, and $16$ only. There is a $6$-vertex triangulation of the real projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$, a $9$-vertex triangulation of the complex projective plane $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and $15$-vertex triangulations of the quaternionic projective plane $\mathbb{HP}^2$. Recently, the author has constructed first examples of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. The four most symmetrical have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ of order $351$. These triangulations were constructed using a computer program after the symmetry group was guessed. However, it remained unclear why exactly this group is realized as the symmetry group and whether $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like $\mathbb{OP}^2$ exist with other (possibly larger) symmetry groups. In this paper we find strong restrictions on symmetry groups of such $27$-vertex triangulations. Namely, we present a list of $26$ subgroups of $\mathrm{S}_{27}$ containing all possible symmetry groups of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. (We do not know whether all these subgroups can be realized as symmetry groups.) The group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ is the largest group in this list, and the orders of all other groups do not exceed $52$. A key role in our approach is played by the use of Smith and Bredon's results on the topology of fixed point sets of finite transformation groups.

The Turán Number of Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there is a constant $c$ such that any 3-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with $n$ vertices and at least $cn^{5/2}$ edges contains a triangulation of the real projective plane as a subgraph. This resolves a conjecture of Kupavskii, Polyanskii, Tomon, and Zakharov. Furthermore, our work, combined with prior results, asymptotically determines the Turán number of all surfaces.

A Note on the Number of Regions in a Line Arrangement
For an arrangement of $n$ lines in the real projective plane, we denote by $f$ the number of regions into which the real projective plane is divided by the lines. Using Bojanowski's inequality, we establish a new lower bound for $f$. In particular, we show that if no more than $\frac{2}{3}n$ lines intersect at any point, then $f \ge \frac{1}{6}n^{2}$

Erdős--Szekeres-type problems in the real projective plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider point sets in the real projective plane $\mathbb{R}P^2$ and explore variants of classical extremal problems about planar point sets in this setting, with a main focus on Erdős--Szekeres-type problems. We provide asymptotically tight bounds for a variant of the Erdős--Szekeres theorem about point sets in convex position in $\mathbb{R}P^2$, which was initiated by Harborth and Möller in 1994. The notion of convex position in $\mathbb{R}P^2$ agrees with the definition of convex sets introduced by Steinitz in 1913. For $k \geq 3$, an (\affine) $k$-hole in a finite set $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ is a set of $k$ points from $S$ in convex position with no point of $S$ in the interior of their convex hull. After introducing a new notion of $k$-holes for points sets from $\mathbb{R}P^2$, called projective $k$-holes, we find arbitrarily large finite sets of points from $\mathbb{R}P^2$ with no \projective 8-holes, providing an analogue of a classical planar construction by Horton from 1983. We also prove that they contain only quadratically many \projective $k$-holes for $k \leq 7$. On the other hand, we show that the number of $k$-holes can be substantially larger in~$\mathbb{R}P^2$ than in $\mathbb{R}^2$ by constructing, for every $k \in \{3,\dots,6\}$, sets of $n$ points from $\mathbb{R}^2 \subset \mathbb{R}P^2$ with $Ω(n^{3-3/5k})$ \projective $k$-holes and only $O(n^2)$ \affine $k$-holes. Last but not least, we prove several other results, for example about projective holes in random point sets in $\mathbb{R}P^2$ and about some algorithmic aspects. The study of extremal problems about point sets in $\mathbb{R}P^2$ opens a new area of research, which we support by posing several open problems.

Partitioning the projective plane and the dunce hat
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We show that any finite triangulation of the real projective plane or the dunce hat is partitionable. To prove this, we introduce simple yet useful gluing tools that allow us to reduce partitionability of a given complex to that of smaller constituent relative subcomplexes such as the disk or the open Möbius strip. The gluing process generates partitioning schemes with a distinctive shelling/constructible flavor. We also give a tool to lift partitionability of relative simplicial complexes to that of the preimages of certain simplicial quotient maps.

We describe the topology of singular real algebraic curves in a smooth surface. We enumerate and bound in terms of the degree the number of topological types of singular algebraic curves in the real projective plane.
E-series of character varieties of non-orientable surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we are interested in two kinds of (stacky) character varieties associated to a compact non-orientable surface. (A) We consider the quotient stack of the space of representations of the fundamental group of this surface to GL(n). (B) We choose a set of k-punctures on the surface and a generic k-tuple of semisimple conjugacy classes of GL(n), and we consider the stack of anti-invariant local systems on the orientation cover of the surface with local monodromies around the punctures given by the prescribed conjugacy classes. We compute the number of points of these spaces over finite fields from which we get a formula for their E-series (a certain specialization of the mixed Poincaré series). In case (B), we discuss the mixed Poincaré series when the surface is the real projective plane and k=1.

Projective plane graphs and 3-rigidity
It is shown that a simple graph which is embeddable in the real projective plane is minimally 3-rigid if and only if it is (3,6)-tight. Moreover the topologically uncontractible embedded graphs of this type are constructible from one of 8 embedded graphs by a sequence of vertex splitting moves. In particular the characterisation of minimal 3-rigidity holds for a triangulated Mobius strip.

The optimal packing of eight points in the real projective plane
How can we arrange $n$ lines through the origin in three-dimensional Euclidean space in a way that maximizes the minimum interior angle between pairs of lines? Conway, Hardin and Sloane (1996) produced line packings for $n \leq 55$ that they conjectured to be within numerical precision of optimal in this sense, but until now only the cases $n \leq 7$ have been solved. In this paper, we resolve the case $n = 8$. Drawing inspiration from recent work on the Tammes problem, we enumerate contact graph candidates for an optimal configuration and eliminate those that violate various combinatorial and geometric necessary conditions. The contact graph of the putatively optimal numerical packing of Conway, Hardin and Sloane is the only graph that survives, and we recover from this graph an exact expression for the minimum distance of eight optimally packed points in the real projective plane.

Exact Line Packings from Numerical Solutions
Recent progress in Zauner's conjecture has leveraged deep conjectures in algebraic number theory to promote numerical line packings to exact and verifiable solutions to the line packing problem. We introduce a numerical-to-exact technique in the real setting that does not require such conjectures. Our approach is completely reproducible, matching Sloane's database of putatively optimal numerical line packings with Mathematica's built-in implementation of cylindrical algebraic decomposition. As a proof of concept, we promote a putatively optimal numerical packing of eight points in the real projective plane to an exact packing, whose optimality we establish in a forthcoming paper.

Balanced triangulations on few vertices and an implementation of cross-flips
A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex is balanced if the underlying graph is $(d+1)$-colorable. We present an implementation of cross-flips, a set of local moves introduced by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik which connect any two PL-homeomorphic balanced combinatorial manifolds. As a result we exhibit a vertex minimal balanced triangulation of the real projective plane, of the dunce hat and of the real projective space, as well as several balanced triangulations of surfaces and 3-manifolds on few vertices. In particular we construct small balanced triangulations of the 3-sphere that are non-shellable and shellable but not vertex decomposable.

Combinatorics of free and simplicial line arrangements
We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements in the real projective plane. Our focus lies on two classes of arrangements: simplicial arrangements and arrangements whose characteristic polynomials have only real roots. We derive inequalities involving the $t$-vectors of the arrangements in consideration. As application, we obtain some finiteness and classification results. Moreover, we are able to prove the Dirac Motzkin Conjecture for real pseudoline arrangements whose charateristic polynomials split over $\mathbb{R}$.

Topological realizations of line arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
A venerable problem in combinatorics and geometry asks whether a given incidence relation may be realized by a configuration of points and lines. The classic version of this would ask for algebraic lines over some field or possibly real pseudolines: embedded circles (isotopic to $RP^1$) in the real projective plane. In this paper we investigate whether a configuration is realized by a collection of $2$-spheres embedded, in the symplectic, smooth, or topological (locally flat) categories, in the complex projective plane. We find obstructions to realizability in the topological category, which apply to configurations specified by all projective planes over a finite field. Such obstructions are used to show that certain contact graph manifolds are not (strongly) symplectically fillable. We also show that a configuration of real pseudolines can be complexified to give a configuration of smooth, indeed symplectically embedded, $2$-spheres.
