New examples and partial classification of 15-vertex triangulations of the quaternionic projective plane
Published in Trudy Mat. Inst. Steklova, 326 (2024), 58-100 (in Russian); English transl. in: Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., 326 (2024), 52-89 • View PublicationBIB
Brehm and Kühnel (1992) constructed three 15-vertex combinatorial 8-manifolds `like the quaternionic projective plane' with symmetry groups $\mathrm{A}_5$, $\mathrm{A}_4$, and $\mathrm{S}_3$, respectively. Gorodkov (2016) proved that these three manifolds are in fact PL homeomorphic to $\mathbb{HP}^2$. Note that 15 is the minimal number of vertices of a combinatorial 8-manifold that is not PL homeomorphic to $S^8$. In the present paper we construct a lot of new 15-vertex triangulations of $\mathbb{HP}^2$. A surprising fact is that such examples are found for very different symmetry groups, including those not in any way related to the group $\mathrm{A}_5$. Namely, we find 19 triangulations with symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_7$, one triangulation with symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_6\times\mathrm{C}_2$, 14 triangulations with symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_6$, 26 triangulations with symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_5$, one new triangulation with symmetry group $\mathrm{A}_4$, and 11 new triangulations with symmetry group $\mathrm{S}_3$. Further, we obtain the following classification result. We prove that, up to isomorphism, there are exactly 75 triangulations of $\mathbb{HP}^2$ with 15 vertices and symmetry group of order at least 4: the three Brehm-Kühnel triangulations and the 72 new triangulations listed above. On the other hand, we show that there are plenty of triangulations with symmetry groups $\mathrm{C}_3$ and $\mathrm{C}_2$, as well as the trivial symmetry group.

On possible symmetry groups of 27-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane

In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any triangulation of a $d$-manifold (without boundary) that is not homeomorphic to the sphere has at least $3d/2+3$ vertices. Moreover, triangulations with exactly $3d/2+3$ vertices may exist only for `manifolds like projective planes', which can have dimensions $2$, $4$, $8$, and $16$ only. There is a $6$-vertex triangulation of the real projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$, a $9$-vertex triangulation of the complex projective plane $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and $15$-vertex triangulations of the quaternionic projective plane $\mathbb{HP}^2$. Recently, the author has constructed first examples of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. The four most symmetrical have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ of order $351$. These triangulations were constructed using a computer program after the symmetry group was guessed. However, it remained unclear why exactly this group is realized as the symmetry group and whether $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like $\mathbb{OP}^2$ exist with other (possibly larger) symmetry groups. In this paper we find strong restrictions on symmetry groups of such $27$-vertex triangulations. Namely, we present a list of $26$ subgroups of $\mathrm{S}_{27}$ containing all possible symmetry groups of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. (We do not know whether all these subgroups can be realized as symmetry groups.) The group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ is the largest group in this list, and the orders of all other groups do not exceed $52$. A key role in our approach is played by the use of Smith and Bredon's results on the topology of fixed point sets of finite transformation groups.

634 vertex-transitive and more than $10^{103}$ non-vertex-transitive 27-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane

In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any combinatorial $d$-manifold with less than $3d/2+3$ vertices is PL homeomorphic to the sphere and any combinatorial $d$-manifold with exactly $3d/2+3$ vertices is PL homeomorphic to either the sphere or a manifold like a projective plane in the sense of Eells and Kuiper. The latter possibility may occur for $d\in\{2,4,8,16\}$ only. There exist a unique $6$-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{RP}^2$, a unique $9$-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and at least three $15$-vertex triangulations of $\mathbb{HP}^2$. However, until now, the question of whether there exists a $27$-vertex triangulation of a manifold like the octonionic projective plane has remained open. We solve this problem by constructing a lot of examples of such triangulations. Namely, we construct $634$ vertex-transitive $27$-vertex combinatorial $16$-manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Four of them have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ of order $351$, and the other $630$ have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3$ of order $27$. Further, we construct more than $10^{103}$ non-vertex-transitive $27$-vertex combinatorial $16$-manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Most of them have trivial symmetry group, but there are also symmetry groups $\mathrm{C}_3$, $\mathrm{C}_3^2$, and $\mathrm{C}_{13}$. We conjecture that all the triangulations constructed are PL homeomorphic to the octonionic projective plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. Nevertheless, we have no proof of this fact so far.

Small covers of graph-associahedra and realization of cycles

An oriented connected closed manifold $M^n$ is called a URC-manifold if for any oriented connected closed manifold $N^n$ of the same dimension there exists a nonzero degree mapping of a finite-fold covering $\widehat{M}^n$ of $M^n$ onto $N^n$. This condition is equivalent to the following: For any $n$-dimensional integral homology class of any topological space $X$, a multiple of it can be realized as the image of the fundamental class of a finite-fold covering $\widehat{M}^n$ of $M^n$ under a continuous mapping $f\colon \widehat{M}^n\to X$. In 2007 the author gave a constructive proof of the classical result by Thom that a multiple of any integral homology class can be realized as an image of the fundamental class of an oriented smooth manifold. This construction yields the existence of URC-manifolds of all dimensions. For an important class of manifolds, the so-called small covers of graph-associahedra corresponding to connected graphs, we prove that either they or their two-fold orientation coverings are URC-manifolds. In particular, we obtain that the two-fold covering of the small cover of the usual Stasheff associahedron is a URC-manifold. In dimensions 4 and higher, this manifold is simpler than all previously known URC-manifolds.

The bellows conjecture for small flexible polyhedra in non-Euclidean spaces
Published in Mosc. Math. J., 17:2 (2017), 269-290 • View PublicationBIB
The bellows conjecture claims that the volume of any flexible polyhedron of dimension 3 or higher is constant during the flexion. The bellows conjecture was proved for flexible polyhedra in the Euclidean spaces of dimensions 3 and higher, and for bounded flexible polyhedra in the odd-dimensional Lobachevsky spaces. Counterexamples to the bellows conjecture are known in all open hemispheres of dimensions 3 and higher. The aim of this paper is to prove that, nonetheless, the bellows conjecture is true for all flexible polyhedra in either spheres or Lobachevsky spaces of dimensions greater than or equal to 3 with sufficiently small edge lengths.

Volume of a simplex as a multivalued algebraic function of the areas of its two-faces

For n greater than or equal to 4, the square of the volume of an n-simplex satisfies a polynomial relation with coefficients depending on the squares of the areas of 2-faces of this simplex. First, we compute the minimal degree of such polynomial relation. Second, we prove that the volume an n-simplex satisfies a monic polynomial relation with coefficients depending on the areas of 2-faces of this simplex if and only if n is even and at least 6, and we study the leading coefficients of polynomial relations satisfied by the volume for other n.

Generalization of Sabitov's Theorem to Polyhedra of Arbitrary Dimensions
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., 52:2 (2014), 195-220 • View PublicationBIB
In 1996 Sabitov proved that the volume of an arbitrary simplicial polyhedron P in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^3$ satisfies a monic (with respect to V) polynomial relation F(V,l)=0, where l denotes the set of the squares of edge lengths of P. In 2011 the author proved the same assertion for polyhedra in $\R^4$. In this paper, we prove that the same result is true in arbitrary dimension $n\ge 3$. Moreover, we show that this is true not only for simplicial polyhedra, but for all polyhedra with triangular 2-faces. As a corollary, we obtain the proof in arbitrary dimension of the well-known Bellows Conjecture posed by Connelly in 1978. This conjecture claims that the volume of any flexible polyhedron is constant. Moreover, we obtain the following stronger result. If $P_t$, $t\in [0,1]$, is a continuous deformation of a polyhedron such that the combinatorial type of $P_t$ does not change and every 2-face of $P_t$ remains congruent to the corresponding face of $P_0$, then the volume of $P_t$ is constant. We also obtain non-trivial estimates for the oriented volumes of complex simplicial polyhedra in $\C^n$ from their orthogonal edge lengths.

Sabitov polynomials for volumes of polyhedra in four dimensions
Published in Advances in Mathematics 252 (2014) 586-611 • View PublicationBIB
In 1996 I.Kh. Sabitov proved that the volume of a simplicial polyhedron in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space is a root of certain polynomial with coefficients depending on the combinatorial type and on edge lengths of the polyhedron only. Moreover, the coefficients of this polynomial are polynomials in edge lengths of the polyhedron. This result implies that the volume of a simplicial polyhedron with fixed combinatorial type and edge lengths can take only finitely many values. In particular, this yields that the volume of a flexible polyhedron in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space is constant. Until now it has been unknown whether these results can be obtained in dimensions greater than 3. In this paper we prove that all these results hold for polyhedra in a 4-dimensional Euclidean space.

Construction of combinatorial manifolds with the prescribed sets of links of vertices

To each oriented closed combinatorial manifold we assign the set (with repetitions) of isomorphism classes of links of its vertices. The obtained transformation L is the main object of study of the present paper. We pose a problem on the inversion of the transformation L. We shall show that this problem is closely related to N.Steenrod's problem on realization of cycles and to the Rokhlin-Schwartz-Thom construction of combinatorial Pontryagin classes. It is easy to obtain a condition of balancing that is a necessary condition for a set of isomorphism classes of combinatorial spheres to belong to the image of the transformation L. In the present paper we give an explicit construction providing that each balanced set of isomorphism classes of combinatorial spheres gets into the image of L after passing to a multiple set and adding several pairs of the form (Z,-Z), where -Z is the sphere Z with the orientation reversed. This construction enables us, for a given singular simplicial cycle of a space R, to construct explicitly a combinatorial manifold M and a mapping $φ:M\to R$ such that $φ_*[M]=r[ξ]$ for some positive integer r. The construction is based on resolving singularities of the cycle $ξ$. We give applications of our main construction to cobordisms of manifolds with singularities and cobordisms of simple cells. In particular, we prove that every rational additive invariant of cobordisms of manifolds with singularities admits a local formula. Another application is the construction of explicit (though inefficient) local combinatorial formulae for polynomials in the rational Pontryagin classes of combinatorial manifolds.

Local formulae for combinatorial Pontrjagin classes
Published in Izv. RAN, Ser. Matem., 68:5 (2004), 13-66 (in Russian); English transl. in: Izv. Math., 68:5 (2004), 861-910 • View PublicationBIB
By p(|K|) denote the characteristic class of a combinatorial manifold K given by the polynomial p in Pontrjagin classes of K. We prove that for any polynomial p there exists a function taking each combinatorial manifold K to a rational simplicial cycle z(K) such that: (1) the Poincare dual of z(K) represents the cohomology class p(|K|); (2) a coefficient of each simplex in the cycle z(K) is determined only by the combinatorial type of the link of this simplex. We also prove that if a function z satisfies the condition (2), then this function automatically satisfies the condition (1) for some polynomial p. We describe explicitly all such functions z for the first Pontrjagin class. We obtain estimates for denominators of coefficients of simplices in the cycles z(K).
