Parking functions, Smirnov words, and noncrossing Chow polynomials
We prove real-rootedness of the Chow polynomials of the noncrossing partition lattices by transferring tieless parking functions to finite-alphabet Smirnov words and applying a last-letter interlacing recurrence. We also derive a triangular recurrence for peaks and ties and identify the peakless-tieless descent polynomial as the Narayana polynomial. For the toric $g$-contributions of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, we exhibit a fixed-row common interlacer and establish real-rootedness of all nonnegative row sums. Individual real-rootedness follows in particular; Q.~Xiao recently proved it independently by a different differential recurrence. We also give a separate finite Schur--Szegő convolution proof of the individual statement. These results prove Conjecture~4.2 of Xiao and Conjecture~11.2 of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, with consequences for weakly 123-avoiding parking functions. We also prove real-rootedness for the image-size polynomial on all parking functions and for the ascent and descent polynomials of four two-pattern-avoiding classes.
Counting Boolean Antichains
We say that an antichain in a lattice $L$ is Boolean if it generates a Boolean sublattice in $L$ in a particularly nice way. These purely combinatorial objects play a role in the representation theory of the incidence algebra of the lattice $L$, as indicated by recent results of Rognerud, Yıldırım and of the last author with Klász, Kleinau and Marczinzik. Given these motivations, it is natural to ask: Can we count and construct Boolean antichains in certain lattices? In this paper we give a construction of Boolean antichains in Boolean lattices, partition lattices and Tamari lattices. Furthermore, we share the surprisingly elegant formulas we found for the number of these Boolean antichains.
Lascoux series, parking functions and noncrossing partitions
In the study of the generating series of Demazure characters, Lascoux used isobaric divided differences to define a family of polynomials $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ indexed by permutations $σ$, and asked for a satisfactory expression of these polynomials. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for the permutation $σ=[2,3,\ldots,n,1]$ or its inverse in terms of the descent statistic of parking functions of length $n-1$. Based on this progress on Lascoux's open problem, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for this special case coincides with the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice associated to the irreducible Coxeter group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$. We are inspired by this coincidence to give an operator approach to $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ for any finite Coxeter group $W$. As an application, we completely solve an open problem on $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ which was proposed by Athanasiadis, Douvropoulos and Kalampogia-Evangelinou. For any $k$-divisible noncrossing partition poset $\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W$, we also obtain the interlacing symmetric decomposition property of the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W),t)$.

Erdős--Ko--Rado and Hilton--Milner Theorems in the Partition Lattice
Let $M_n=M(K_{n+1})$ be the graphic matroid of the complete graph, and let $\mathcal{F}_k(M_n)$ be its rank-$k$ flats. We study families $\mathcal{A}\subseteq\mathcal{F}_k(M_n)$ satisfying $\mathrm{rk}(A\wedge B)\ge t$ for all $A,B\in\mathcal{A}$. For $t=1$, this problem is exactly equivalent to Czabarka's partition-EKR conjecture, first introduced in print by P.~L. Erdős and L.~A. Székely~\cite{ErdosSzekelyHigher}. We prove the corresponding Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem in the explicit linear range $n+1\ge8k$, giving a constant-factor advance toward the conjectured sharp range $n\ge2k$. For every fixed $t$, we further prove an Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem under an explicit condition of order $O_t(k^2)$ on the block number $n+1-k$, with equality only for a full $t$-star. We also determine the largest nontrivial intersecting families under an explicit $O(k^6)$ threshold and characterize the unique extremal family up to isomorphism.

Noncrossing Combinatorics, the Full Twist, and Decategorification of Knot Invariants
Much work in knot theory has consisted of categorifying, and thereby strengthening, knot invariants. We take the opposite approach: decategorification, more commonly called combinatorics. We introduce a technique that relates the dual braid group generators, the Hecke images of pure braids, and factorization problems in reflection groups to knot invariants. We prove that the $(a,z{=}0)$-HOMFLYPT polynomial can be computed as a solution to such a problem. This technique was motivated by Coxeter--Catalan combinatorics. For example, we give a new proof of EL-shellability of the noncrossing partition lattice using the image of the full twist in the Hecke algebra; in a surprising sort of combinatorial reciprocity, its inverse computes the homotopy type. Similarly, noncrossing partitions naturally arise from our construction applied to positive powers of the full twist, while cluster complexes come from the same construction applied to negative powers. In crystallographic type, we exploit the conjugacy of all Coxeter elements to give the first reflection subword models for rational noncrossing Catalan objects. Our reciprocity gives two models: one generalizing noncrossing partitions, and one generalizing clusters. Applying the same method produces two (rational) noncrossing parking models.
The Chow Polynomial of the Noncrossing Partition Lattice
We prove that the Chow polynomial of the noncrossing partition lattice is equal to the descent generating function of tieless parking functions. As a consequence, we obtain new results on the descent statistic for parking functions.

On Boolean sublattices of finite partition lattices
We investigate maximal Boolean sublattices of the partition lattice Part(U) of a finite universe U. First, any largest size Boolean sublattice of Part(U) can be formed using all partitions whose blocks are subtrees of a tree with vertex set U. It is shown that a maximal Boolean sublattice of Part(U) always contains the least and the largest elements of Part(U). Boolean sublattices B of PartU containing 0 are characterized by a certain condition imposed on the cycles of a linear hypergraph corresponding to the atoms of B on the set U. We show that B can be extended to a Boolean sublattice of Part(U) with a largest size, if and only if the hypergraph induced by its atoms is a hypertree. This is the case when B is formed by all the partitions whose blocks are intervals in a generalized sense. The main result states that all partition lattices of height at least three have maximal Boolean sublattices for all possible dimensions at least three

Noncrossing Partitions From Hull Configurations
Each finite configuration of points in the plane determines a corresponding lattice of noncrossing partitions. When these points form the vertex set of a convex polygon, the associated lattice is the classical noncrossing partition lattice (introduced by Kreweras in 1972), which makes many appearances in combinatorics and geometric group theory. If, on the other hand, all points of the configuration lie on a common line segment, the result is a Boolean lattice. In this article, we examine the more general class of hull configurations, which we define to be those which lie either on a line segment or on the boundary of a convex polygon. We prove that the corresponding lattices of noncrossing partitions are unions of maximal Boolean subposets and, under certain circumstances, have symmetric chain decompositions.
Noncrossing Partitions From Cones and Semicircles

For each finite configuration of distinct points in the plane, there is an associated lattice of noncrossing partitions. When these points form the vertices of a convex polygon, the result is the classical noncrossing partition lattice, which is enumerated by the Catalan numbers and satisfies many other useful properties. In this article, we examine three variations of this lattice which arise when the starting configuration is allowed to have points on the sides of a convex polygon rather than just the vertex set.

Stability and ribbon bases for the rank-selected homology of geometric lattices
This paper analyzes the representation theoretic stability, in the sense of Thomas Church and Benson Farb, of the rank-selected homology of the Boolean lattice and the partition lattice, proving sharp uniform representation stability bounds in both cases. It proves a conjecture of the first author and Reiner by giving the sharp stability bound for general rank sets for the partition lattice. Along the way, a new homology basis sharing useful features with the polytabloid basis for Specht modules is introduced for the rank-selected homology and for the rank-selected Whitney homology of any geometric lattice, resolving an old open question of Björner. These bases give a matroid theoretic analogue of Specht modules.

Antichain cutsets in real-ranked lattices
We show that in a rank supersolvable lattice that is graded by a bounded real interval, any antichain cutset is a level set for some appropriately constructed grading. As a consequence, given an antichain cutset in any of the measurable Boolean lattice, a continuous partition lattice, or a continuous projective geometry, we may find a grading in which the cutset is a level set.

Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Permutahedron Triangulations via Total Linear Stability and the Dual Braid Group
For each finite Coxeter group $W$ and each standard Coxeter element of $W$, we construct a triangulation of the $W$-permutahedron. For particular realizations of the $W$-permutahedron, we show that this is a regular triangulation induced by a height function coming from the theory of total linear stability for Dynkin quivers. We also explore several notable combinatorial properties of these triangulations that relate the Bruhat order, the noncrossing partition lattice, and Cambrian congruences. Each triangulation gives an explicit mechanism for relating two different presentations of the corresponding braid group (the standard Artin presentation and Bessis's dual presentation). This is a step toward uniformly proving conjectural simple, explicit, and type-uniform presentations for the corresponding pure braid group.

The model theory of metric lattices: pseudofinite partition lattices
We initiate the study of general metric lattices in the context of the model theory of metric structures. As an application we develop a theory of pseudo-finite limits of partition lattices and connect this theory with the theory of continuous limits of partition lattices due to Björner and Lovász.
Factorizations in Geometric Lattices
This article investigates atomic decompositions in geometric lattices isomorphic to the partition lattice $Π(X)$ of a finite set $X$, a fundamental structure in lattice theory and combinatorics. We explore the role of atomicity in these lattices, building on concepts introduced by D.D. Anderson, D.F. Anderson, and M. Zafrullah within the context of factorization theory in commutative algebra. As part of the study, we first examine the main characteristics of the function $\mathfrak{N}\colon Π(X) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$, which assigns to each partition $π$ the number of minimal atomic decompositions of $π$. We then consider a distinguished subset of atoms, $\mathcal{R}$, referred to as the set of red atoms, and derive a recursive formula for $\pmbπ(X, j, s, \mathcal{R})$, which enumerates the rank-$j$ partitions expressible as the join of exactly $s$ red atoms.

Partitions of an Eulerian Digraph into Circuits
We investigate a cancellation property satisfied by a connected Eulerian digraph $D$. Namely, unless $D$ is a single directed cycle, we have $\sum_{k\geq 1} (-1)^{k} f_k(D)=0$, where $f_k(D)$ is the number of partitions of Eulerian circuits of $D$ into $k$ circuits. This property is a consequence of the fact that the Martin polynomial of a digraph has no constant term. We provide an alternative proof by employing Viennot's theory of Heaps of Pieces, and in particular, a bijection between closed trails of a digraph and heaps with a unique maximal piece, which are also in bijection with unique sink orientations of the intersection graphs $G_a$ of partitions $a$ of $E(D)$ into cycles. The argument considers the partition lattice of the edge set of a digraph $D$, restricted to the join-semilattice $T(D)$ induced by elements whose blocks are connected and Eulerian. The minimal elements of $T(D)$ are exactly the partitions of $D$ into cycles, and the up-set of a minimal element $a\in T(D)$ is shown to be isomorphic to the bond lattice $L(G_a)$. Using tools developed by Whitney and Rota, we perform Möbius inversion on $T(D)$ and obtain the claimed cancellation. As a consequence of this alternative proof, we relate the Martin polynomial of a digraph directly to the chromatic polynomials of the intersection graphs of partitions of $D$ into cycles. Finally, we apply the cancellation property in order to deduce the classical Harary-Sachs Theorem for graphs of rank $2$ from a hypergraph generalization thereof, remedying a gap in a previous proof of this.

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials II: Polynomials and Cell Structures
This article introduces a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed rectangular region. We call this the branched rectangle complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed rectangle. The vertices of the cell structure are indexed by the combinatorial "basketballs" studied by Martin, Savitt and Singer. Structurally, the branched rectangle complex is a full subcomplex of a direct product of two copies of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice. Topologically, it is homeomorphic to the closed $2n$-dimensional ball where $n=d-1$. Metrically, the simplices in each factor are orthoschemes. It can also be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$. We also introduce a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed annular region. We call this the branched annulus complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed annulus. It can be constructed from the branched rectangle complex as a cellular quotient by isometric face identifications. And it can be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ with distinct roots. Finally, the branched annulus complex deformation retracts to the branched circle complex, which we identify with the dual braid complex. Our explicit embedding of the dual braid complex as a spine for the space of polynomials with distinct roots provides a direct proof that these two classifying spaces for the braid group are homotopy equivalent.
Permutation groups, partition lattices and block structures

Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group on $Ω$. The $G$-invariant partitions form a sublattice of the lattice of all partitions of $Ω$, having the further property that all its elements are uniform (that is, have all parts of the same size). If, in addition, all the equivalence relations defining the partitions commute, then the relations form an \emph{orthogonal block structure}, a concept from statistics; in this case the lattice is modular. If it is distributive, then we have a \emph{poset block structure}, whose automorphism group is a \emph{generalised wreath product}. We examine permutation groups with these properties, which we call the \emph{OB property} and \emph{PB property} respectively, and in particular investigate when direct and wreath products of groups with these properties also have these properties. A famous theorem on permutation groups asserts that a transitive imprimitive group $G$ is embeddable in the wreath product of two factors obtained from the group (the group induced on a block by its setwise stabiliser, and the group induced on the set of blocks by~$G$). We extend this theorem to groups with the PB property, embeddng them into generalised wreath products. We show that the map from posets to generalised wreath products preserves intersections and inclusions. We have included background and historical material on these concepts.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.
Noncrossing Partition Lattices from Planar Configurations

The lattice of noncrossing partitions is well-known for its wide variety of combinatorial appearances and properties. For example, the lattice is rank-symmetric and enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this article, we introduce a large family of new noncrossing partition lattices with both of these properties, each parametrized by a configuration of n points in the plane.
