A Sharp Spectral Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem for Uniform Hypergraphs
The spectral Erdős--Ko--Rado problem asks for the largest adjacency-tensor spectral radius of a $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform family. Keevash, Lenz and Mubayi proved that, for fixed $k,t$ and sufficiently large $n$, the unique extremal family is a full $t$-star, and asked whether such a theorem extends to all $n$. Let $\mathcal{A}_r=\{F\in\binom{[n]}k:|F\cap[t+2r]|\ge t+r\}$ be the Frankl families and write $ρ_r$ for their spectral radii. For $2\le t<k$ and $n>2k-t$, we prove that $\mathcal{A}_0$ is spectrally extremal if and only if $ρ_0\geρ_1$; it is unique up to permutation when the inequality is strict, whereas $\mathcal{A}_0$ and $\mathcal{A}_1$ are both extremal at equality. The layerwise pull used in the Ahlswede--Khachatrian cardinality proof is not applicable here: applied directly, it may decrease the spectral radius. Our proof instead pulls all boundary layers simultaneously and applies Perron tail symmetrization. It follows that $\mathcal{A}_0$ is uniquely extremal for $n\ge (t+1)(k-t+1)+\lceil(t+1)\log(t+1)\rceil$; the leading coefficient $t+1$ is best possible for fixed $t$. We also determine all extremal structures for $t=1$ throughout the range $n\ge2k$.
Intersecting families of permutations with a fixed number of cycles
Let $\mathrm{Sym(n,k)}$ denote the set of permutations on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ with exactly $k$ cycles. A family $\mathcal{F}\subset\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$ is said to be intersecting if $σ^{-1}τ$ has a fixed point for all $σ,τ\in\mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we investigate the size and structure of maximum-sized intersecting families of permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$. In the regime $k\leq n^{0.25}$, we show that every maximum-sized intersecting family is a star, meaning it consists of all permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$ that agree at a given point in $[n]$. We establish this result by proving a stronger stability result that bounds the maximum possible size of a non-centred intersecting family. Specifically, in the regime $k\leq n^{0.25}$, the size of any non-centred intersecting family is at most $\left(2/3+o(1)\right)$ times the maximum possible size of a star. In the tighter polylogarithmic regime $k\leq (\ln n)^{d}$, we improve this bound to $\left(1-1/e+o(1)\right)$ times the maximum possible size of a star; we show that this bound is asymptotically sharp. Thus, we establish both an Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem and its corresponding stability version for $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$.
An Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem for cross-intersecting families in the Euclidean inner product
Let $\binom{[n]}{k}$ be the set of all $k$-element subsets of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and let $\mathcal A,\mathcal B \subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ be two cross-intersecting families, that is, $A\cap B\neq \emptyset$ for any $A\in \mathcal A$ and $B\in \mathcal B$. The classical cross-intersecting version of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, due to Pyber and Matsumoto--Tokushige, states that if $n\geq 2k$, then $|\mathcal A||\mathcal B|\leq \binom{n-1}{k-1}^2,$ where the equality holds for $n>2k$ if and only if $\mathcal A=\mathcal B$ is a star. In the present paper, we first give a stability result of this theorem by using Filmus's FKN theorem on the slice and linear algebra method as follows: There exists a constant $C>1$ such that if $n\geq 2.07k$ and $|\mathcal A||\mathcal B|\geq (1-ε)\binom{n-1}{k-1}^2$, where $ε\leq \frac{k^2}{C^2 n ^2 }$, then there is a star $\mathcal{S}$ such that $|\mathcal{S} Δ\mathcal A|\leq C ε\binom{n}{k}$ and $|\mathcal{S} Δ\mathcal B|\leq C ε\binom{n}{k}.$ Moreover, based on this stability result and the eigenvalues of the matrices of the Johnson scheme, we present an Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem for cross-intersecting families in the Euclidean inner product showing that if $n\geq 2k$ and $k\geq d \geq 0$, then $$\big\langle\mathbf{v}_d(\mathcal A),\mathbf{v}_d(\mathcal B)\big\rangle \leq \frac{\binom{k}{d}\binom{k-1}{d}}{\binom{n-1}{d}}\binom{n-1}{k-1}^2 +\binom{k-1}{d-1} \binom{n-d-1}{k-d}\binom{n-1}{k-1},$$ together with uniqueness and a corresponding stability result, where $\mathbf{v}_d(\mathcal A) \in \mathbb R^{\binom{[n]}{d}}$ is the $d$-degree vector of $\mathcal A$ whose $U$-entry is the number of members in $\mathcal A$ containing $U$.
A Spectral Hilton--Milner--Frankl Theorem for $t$-Intersecting Families
Keevash, Lenz, and Mubayi proved a spectral Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, showing that, for sufficiently large $n$, the complete $t$-star uniquely maximizes the adjacency-tensor spectral radius among all $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform families.
In this paper, we establish a spectral Hilton--Milner--Frankl theorem for nontrivial $t$-intersecting families in the explicit range $1\le t\le k-2$ and $n\ge 100\cdot 2^k k^7$. More precisely, we prove that, for every nontrivial $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform family $\mathcal F$, the spectral radius satisfies \[
ρ(\mathcal F)\le
\max\{ρ(\mathcal H_{n,k,t}),ρ(\mathcal A_{n,k,t})\}, \] where $\mathcal H_{n,k,t}$ and $\mathcal A_{n,k,t}$ are the two extremal families appearing in the classical Hilton--Milner--Frankl theorem. Moreover, equality holds only for the extremal candidates attaining the maximum, up to isomorphism.
We further compare the two candidates asymptotically. For each fixed $t$, the unique real solution $x=x_t$ of \[
(t+2)^{x-t-1}(t+1)^{t+1}=(x-t+1)^{x-1} \] determines, as $k$ varies, which of $\mathcal H_{n,k,t}$ and $\mathcal A_{n,k,t}$ has the larger asymptotic spectral radius.
Erdős--Ko--Rado and Hilton--Milner Theorems in the Partition Lattice
Let $M_n=M(K_{n+1})$ be the graphic matroid of the complete graph, and let $\mathcal{F}_k(M_n)$ be its rank-$k$ flats. We study families $\mathcal{A}\subseteq\mathcal{F}_k(M_n)$ satisfying $\mathrm{rk}(A\wedge B)\ge t$ for all $A,B\in\mathcal{A}$. For $t=1$, this problem is exactly equivalent to Czabarka's partition-EKR conjecture, first introduced in print by P.~L. Erdős and L.~A. Székely~\cite{ErdosSzekelyHigher}. We prove the corresponding Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem in the explicit linear range $n+1\ge8k$, giving a constant-factor advance toward the conjectured sharp range $n\ge2k$. For every fixed $t$, we further prove an Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem under an explicit condition of order $O_t(k^2)$ on the block number $n+1-k$, with equality only for a full $t$-star. We also determine the largest nontrivial intersecting families under an explicit $O(k^6)$ threshold and characterize the unique extremal family up to isomorphism.
Projective Ore-Degree Conditions for Intersection Theorems in Vector Spaces
Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$, and let $\mathcal F\subsetneq\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{V}{k}$. The \emph{projective Ore-degree} of $\mathcal F$ is the minimum, over all $k$-subspaces $S\notin\mathcal F$, of the sum of the $\mathcal F$-degrees of the projective points contained in $S$. We prove sharp projective Ore analogues of the vector-space Erdős--Ko--Rado and Hilton--Milner theorems. The Ore--Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem holds for $n\ge2k+1$, with equality only for a full point-star. For nontrivial intersecting families, we determine the sharp Ore--Hilton--Milner threshold, together with the complete equality classification, when $q\ge3$ and $n\ge2k+1$, or when $q\ge2$ and $n\ge2k+2$. We further determine a sharp projective Ore-degree threshold forcing a direct-sum matching of size $s$ when $s\ge3$ and $n\ge(2s-1)k-s+4$, and derive a multicolour Ramsey consequence.
Erdős--Ko--Rado theorems in $\ell_2$-norm for three finite spaces
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph. The famous Erdős--Ko--Rado (1961) theorem determines the maximum size and extremal structure for $\mathcal{F}$ being $t$-intersecting, that is, $|F_1 \cap F_2| \ge t$ for any two edges $F_1, F_2$ of $\mathcal F$. The codegree squared sum $\mathrm{co}_2(\mathcal{F})$ is the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree vector of all $(k-1)$-sets in $\mathcal{F}$, which was initially introduced for Turán problems of hypergraphs. Recently, Brooks and Linz (2026), as well as Wu and Zhang (2026) investigated the maximum value of $\mathrm{co}_2(\mathcal{F})$ and corresponding extremal structures for $\mathcal{F}$ being $t$-intersecting. Moreover, Brooks and Linz asked if the classical results on intersecting families can be extended to $\mathrm{co}_2(\mathcal{F})$. In this paper, by developing the spectral techniques for incidence matrices, we study the extremal problems of $\mathrm{co}_2(\mathcal{F})$ for $\mathcal{F}$ being intersecting families in finite vector spaces, affine spaces, and attenuated spaces, and establish the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorems in $\ell_2$-norm for the three finite spaces.
A disproof of the uniform witness conjecture
The study of $(d+1)$-uniform set systems with VC-dimension at most $d$ links the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem with VC-dimension. But already in 1997, Ahlswede and Khachatrian showed that this is not the right extension of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. In 2025, Chao, Xu, Yip and Zhang proposed the uniform witness conjecture as a possible right extension: for $0\le s\le d$, if every set of a $(d+1)$-uniform family has a missing trace of the same fixed size $s$, then the family should have size at most $\binom{n-1}{d}$. They proved the conjecture when $s=d$, and when $s=1$ and $n$ is large. Very recently, Chao, Xu and Zakharov proved the conjecture when $s\le \frac{d}{2}$ and $n$ is large.
We fill in the missing half of the picture, although the picture is not the one suggested by the conjecture. More precisely, for $d\ge 4$ and $\left\lceil \frac{d+2}{2}\right\rceil\le s\le d-1$, we construct such a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\binom{[n]}{d+1}$ with $|\mathcal{F}|=\binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-2(d+1-s)-2}{2s-d-2}$ for every $n\ge2(d+1)$, thereby disproving the uniform witness conjecture.
Upper Bounds on Turán Densities via Extremal Set Theory
We exhibit, in a systematic way, connections between hypergraph Turán problems and extremal set theory. More specifically, we construct natural families of uniform hypergraphs for which the upper bounds on their Turán densities reduce to classical problems in extremal set theory, including the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, $L$-intersecting families, and the Erdős matching problem.
Note on the codegree version of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem
Kupavskii proved a codegree version of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem by showing that for an intersecting family $\mathcal{F} \subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ with $n \geq 2k +3d/(1-d/k)$, the minimum $d$-degree of $\mathcal{F}$ is at most $\binom{n-d-1}{k-d-1}$. Huang and Zhang improved the bound on $n$ to $n \geq 2k+2d-3$. In this short note, we prove that if $d = k-1$, then the bound on $n$ can be improved to $2k + \sqrt{2k} + O(1)$. In addition, we extend our method to show that the bound on $n$ can be improved to $2k + 7k^{2/3}+O(k^{1/3})$ when $d=k-2$.
Intersecting families with bounded intersections
Let $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ be an $s$-uniform family such that every two distinct sets have a nonempty intersection but intersect in at most $k$ elements. By the well-known Ray-Chaudhuri--Wilson theorem, since the intersections can take at most $k$ different values, we have $|\mathcal F|\leq \binom{n}{k}$. We give a stronger upper bound under our assumptions above, when $n$ is large enough compared to $s$ (and $k+1<s$): $|\mathcal F|\leq \frac{\binom{n-1}{k}}{\binom{s-1}{k}}$. Furthermore, we prove a generalization of the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem for non-uniform families. Let $\mathcal F\subset \binom{[n]}{k}\cup\binom{[n]}{k+1}\cup\dots\cup\binom{[n]}{s}$, $3\leq k\leq s$, be a family such that for every two distinct sets
the size of the intersection is between 1 and $k-1$ and $n$ is large enough then $|\mathcal F|\leq {n-1 \choose k-1}$.
Uniform Set Systems with Uniform Witnesses
Frankl--Pach and Erdős conjectured that any $(d+1)$-uniform set family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{d+1}$ with VC-dimension at most $d$ has size at most $\binom{n-1}{d}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. Ahlswede and Khachatrian showed that the conjecture is false by giving a counterexample of size $\binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}$.
For a set family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{d+1}$, the condition that its VC-dimension is at most $d$ can be reformulated as follows: for any $F\in\mathcal{F}$, there exists a set $B_F\subseteq F$ such that $F\cap F'\neq B_F$ for all $F'\in\mathcal{F}$. In this direction, the first author, Xu, Yip, and Zhang conjectured that the bound $\binom{n-1}{d}$ holds if we further assume that $|B_F|=s$ for every $F\in \mathcal{F}$ and for some fixed $0\leq s\leq d$.
The case $s=0$ is exactly the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, and the cases $s\in \{1,d\}$ were proved in the paper by the first author, Xu, Yip, and Zhang. In this short note, we show that the conjecture holds when $s\leq d/2$, and the maximal constructions are stars. Moreover, we construct non-star set families of size $\binom{n-1}{d}$ satisfying the condition for $d/2<s\leq d-1$, which suggests that the problem is substantially different in these cases.
Frankl's diversity theorem for permutations
In 1987, Frankl proved an influential stability result for the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem, which bounds the size of an intersecting family in terms of its distance from the nearest (subset of) star or trivial intersecting family. It is a far-reaching extension of the Hilton--Milner theorem. In this paper, we prove its analogue for permutations on $\{1,\ldots, n\}$, provided $n$ is large. This provides a similar extension of a Hilton--Milner type result for permutations proved by Ellis.
Two new results on maximal left-compressed intersecting families
This paper presents two new results on the theory of maximal left-compressed intersecting families (MLCIFs). First, we answer a question raised by Barber by showing that the number of $k$-uniform MLCIFs on a ground set of size $n$ grows as a doubly-exponential function of $k$, which we identify up to a log factor in the exponent. Among these MLCIFs we identify $k$ specific MLCIFs -- which we call the canonical MLCIFs -- as being in a meaningful way the most important MLCIFs. Specifically, our second main result shows that the canonical MLCIFs are precisely those which can have maximum weight among all $k$-uniform MLCIFs under a non-trivial increasing weight function, and moreover that each canonical MLCIF is the unique $k$-uniform MLCIF of maximum weight for some increasing weight function. This gives an interesting generalisation of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem to a notion of size which places greater significance on some elements of the ground set than others.
The Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem in $\ell_2$-Norm
The codegree squared sum ${\rm co}_2(\cal F)$ of a family (hypergraph) $\cal F \subseteq \binom{[n]} k$ is defined to be the sum of codegrees squared $d(E)^2$ over all $E\in \binom{[n]}{k-1}$, where $d(E)=|\{F\in \cal F: E\subseteq F\}|$. Given a family of $k$-uniform families $\mathscr H$, Balogh, Clemen and Lidický recently introduced the problem to determine the maximum codegree squared sum ${\rm co}_2(\cal F)$ over all $\mathscr H$-free $\cal F$. In the present paper, we consider the families which has as forbidden configurations all pairs of sets with intersection sizes less than $t$,
that is, the well-known $t$-intersecting families. We prove the following Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem in $\ell_2$-norm, which confirms a conjecture of Brooks and Linz.
Let $t,k,n$ be positive integers such that $t\leq k\leq n$. If a family $\mathcal F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ is $t$-intersecting, then for $n\ge (t+1)(k-t+1)$, we have \[{\rm co}_2(\cal F)\le {\binom{n-t}{k-t}}(t+(n-k+1)(k-t)),\] equality holds if and only if $\mathcal{F}=\{F\in {\binom{[n]}{k}}: T\subset F\}$ for some $t$-subset $T$ of $[n]$.
In addition, we prove a Frankl--Hilton--Milner Theorem in $\ell_2$-norm for $t\ge 2$, and a generalized Turán result, i.e., we determine the maximum number of copies of tight path of length 2 in $t$-intersecting families.
Counting cliques with prescribed intersection sizes
We study the generalized Turán problem regarding cliques with restricted intersections, which highlights the motivation from extremal set theory. Let $L=\{\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s\}\subset [0,r-1]$ be a fixed integer set with $|L|\notin \{1,r\}$ and $\ell_1<\dots<\ell_s$, and let $Ψ_r(n,L)$ denote the maximum number of $r$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph whose $r$-cliques are $L$-intersecting as a family of $r$-subsets. Helliar and Liu recently initiated the systematic study of the function $Ψ_r(n,L)$ and showed that $Ψ_r(n,L)\le \left(1-\frac{1}{3r}\right) \prod_{\ell\in L}\frac{n-\ell}{r-\ell}$ for large $n$, improving the trivial bound from the Deza--Erdős--Frankl theorem by a factor of $1-\frac{1}{3r}$. In this article, we improve their result by showing that as $n$ goes to infinity $Ψ_r(n,L)=Θ_{r,L}(n^{|L|})$ if and only if $\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s,r$ form an arithmetic progression and fully determining the corresponding exact values of $Ψ_r(n,L)$ for sufficiently large $n$ in this case. Moreover, when $L=[t,r-1]$, for the generalized Turán extension of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem given by Helliar and Liu, we show a Hilton--Milner-type stability result.
A new measure of robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorems on permutation groups
In this paper we introduce a new way of measuring the robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado (EKR) Theorems on permutation groups. EKR-type results can be viewed as results about the independence numbers of certain corresponding graphs, namely the derangement graphs, and random subgraphs of these graphs have been used to measure the robustness of these extremal results. In the context of permutation groups, the derangement graphs are Cayley graphs on the permutation group in question. We propose studying extremal properties of subgraphs of derangement graphs, that are themselves Cayley graphs of the group, to measure robustness.
We present a variety of results about the robustness of the EKR property of various permutation groups using this new measure.
Stabilities of the Kleitman diameter theorem
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of subsets of $[n]$. The diameter of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum size of symmetric differences among pairs of its members. Resolving a conjecture of Erdős, Kleitman determined the maximum size of a family with fixed diameter, which states that a family with diameter $s$ has cardinality at most that of a Hamming ball of radius $s/2$. Specifically, if $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^{[n]}$ is a family with diameter $s$, then for $s=2d$, $|\mathcal{F}|\le \sum_{i=0}^d {n \choose i}$; for $s=2d+1$, $|\mathcal{F}|\le \sum_{i=0}^d {n \choose i} + {n-1 \choose d}$. This result is known as the Kleitman diameter theorem, which generalizes both the Katona union theorem and the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. In 2017, Frankl provided a complete characterization of the extremal families of Kleitman's theorem and provided a stability result. In this paper, we determine the extremal families of Frankl's theorem and establish a further stability result of Kleitman's theorem. This solves a recent problem proposed by Li and Wu. Our findings constitute the second stability for the Kleitman diameter theorem.
Maximal intersecting families revisited

The well-known Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem states that for $n> 2k$, every intersecting family of $k$-sets of $[n]:=\{1,\ldots ,n\}$ has at most $ {n-1 \choose k-1}$ sets, and the extremal family consists of all $k$-sets containing a fixed element (called a full star). The Hilton--Milner theorem provides a stability result by determining the maximum size of a uniform intersecting family that is not a subfamily of a full star. The further stabilities were studied by Han and Kohayakawa (2017) and Huang and Peng (2024). Two families $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are called cross-intersecting if for every $F\in \mathcal{F}$ and $G\in \mathcal{G}$, the intersection $F\cap G$ is non-empty. Let $k \geq 1, t\ge 0$ and $n \geq 2 k+t$ be integers. Frankl (2016) proved that if $\mathcal{F} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k+t}$ and $\mathcal{G} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k}$ are cross-intersecting families, and $\mathcal{F}$ is non-empty and $(t+1)$-intersecting, then $|\mathcal{F}|+|\mathcal{G}| \leq\binom{n}{k}-\binom{n-k-t}{k}+1$. Recently, Wu (2023) sharpened Frankl's result by establishing a stability variant. The aim of this paper is two-fold. Inspired by the above results, we first prove a further stability variant that generalizes both Frankl's result and Wu's result. Secondly, as an interesting application, we illustrate that the aforementioned results on cross-intersecting families could be used to establish the stability results of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. More precisely, we present new short proofs of the Hilton--Milner theorem, the Han--Kohayakawa theorem and the Huang--Peng theorem. Our arguments are more straightforward, and it may be of independent interest.
A Multidimensional Rado Theorem
We extend Deuber's theorem on $(m,p,c)$-sets to hold over the multidimensional positive integer lattices. This leads to a multidimensional Rado theorem where we are guaranteed monochromatic multidimensional points in all finite colorings of $\left(\mathbb{Z}^+\right)^d$ where the $i^{\mathrm{th}}$ set of coordinates satisfies the $i^{\mathrm{th}}$ given linear Rado system.
