Intersecting families of permutations with a fixed number of cycles
Let $\mathrm{Sym(n,k)}$ denote the set of permutations on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ with exactly $k$ cycles. A family $\mathcal{F}\subset\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$ is said to be intersecting if $σ^{-1}τ$ has a fixed point for all $σ,τ\in\mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we investigate the size and structure of maximum-sized intersecting families of permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$. In the regime $k\leq n^{0.25}$, we show that every maximum-sized intersecting family is a star, meaning it consists of all permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$ that agree at a given point in $[n]$. We establish this result by proving a stronger stability result that bounds the maximum possible size of a non-centred intersecting family. Specifically, in the regime $k\leq n^{0.25}$, the size of any non-centred intersecting family is at most $\left(2/3+o(1)\right)$ times the maximum possible size of a star. In the tighter polylogarithmic regime $k\leq (\ln n)^{d}$, we improve this bound to $\left(1-1/e+o(1)\right)$ times the maximum possible size of a star; we show that this bound is asymptotically sharp. Thus, we establish both an Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem and its corresponding stability version for $\mathrm{Sym}(n,k)$.
Hilton-Milner Theorem for the $r$-independent sets in a union of cliques
We give a Hilton-Milner Theorem for the $r$-independent sets in the graph that is the union of copies of $K_k$. That is, we determine the maximum intersecting families of $r$-independent sets in this graph, subject to the condition that the sets in a family do not all share a common element. As a by-product, we also find a tight upper bound for the sum of sizes of a pair of cross intersecting families made up of the same objects. We apply our theorem to find the largest intersecting family of $r$-independent sets in a family of graphs called ``depth-two claws". This confirms the Holroyd--Talbot conjecture for depth-two claws, extending previous results on these graphs (which covered cases where $r$ was relatively small compared to the number of vertices) to all possible values of $r$.
Perfect and multiple state transfer in oriented Cayley graphs
We study perfect state transfer and multiple state transfer in oriented normal Cayley graphs. We construct examples in a variety of groups, ranging from abelian to nonsolvable, and establish some general restrictions and nonexistence results.
A new measure of robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorems on permutation groups
In this paper we introduce a new way of measuring the robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado (EKR) Theorems on permutation groups. EKR-type results can be viewed as results about the independence numbers of certain corresponding graphs, namely the derangement graphs, and random subgraphs of these graphs have been used to measure the robustness of these extremal results. In the context of permutation groups, the derangement graphs are Cayley graphs on the permutation group in question. We propose studying extremal properties of subgraphs of derangement graphs, that are themselves Cayley graphs of the group, to measure robustness. We present a variety of results about the robustness of the EKR property of various permutation groups using this new measure.
Intersecting Families of Spanning Trees
A family $\mathcal{F}$ of spanning trees of the complete graph on $n$ vertices $K_n$ is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two members have a forest on $t$ edges in common. We prove an Erdős--Ko--Rado result for $t$-intersecting families of spanning trees of $K_n$. In particular, we show there exists a constant $C > 0$ such that for all $n \geq C (\log n) t$ the largest $t$-intersecting families are the families consisting of all trees that contain a fixed set of $t$ disjoint edges (as well as the stars on $n$ vertices for $t = 1$). The proof uses the spread approximation technique in conjunction with the Lopsided Lovász Local Lemma.

Perfect state transfer in graphs related to linear groups in two dimensions
We construct families of graphs from linear groups $\mathrm{SL}(2,q)$, $\mathrm{GL}(2,q)$ and $\mathrm{GU}(2,q^2)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power, with the property that the continuous-time quantum walks on the associated networks of qubits admit perfect state transfer.
Robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado theorems on permutations and perfect matchings
The Erdős--Ko--Rado (EKR) theorem and its generalizations can be viewed as classifications of maximum independent sets in appropriately defined families of graphs, such as the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$. In this paper, we investigate the independence number of random spanning subraphs of two other families of graphs whose maximum independent sets satisfy an EKR-type characterization: the derangement graph on the set of permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$ and the derangement graph on the set $\mathcal{M}_{n}$ of perfect matchings in the complete graph $\mathcal{K}_{2n}$. In both cases, we show there is a sharp threshold probability for the event that the independence number of a random spanning subgraph is equal to that of the original graph. As a useful tool to aid our computations, we obtain a Friedgut--Kalai--Naor (FKN) type theorem on sparse boolean functions whose domain is the vertex set of $\mathcal{M}_{n}$. In particular, we show that boolean functions whose Fourier transforms are highly concentrated on the first two irreducible modules in the $\mathrm{Sym}(2n)$ module $\mathbb{C}[\mathcal{M}_{n}]$, is close to being the characteristic function of a union of maximum independent sets in the derangement graph on perfect matchings.
Intersecting subsets in finite permutation groups
Let $G\leqslant\mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ be transitive, and let $S$ be an intersecting subset, namely, the ratio $xy^{-1}$ of any elements $x,y\in S$ fixes some point. An EKR-type problem is to characterize transitive groups $G\leqslant\mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ such that any intersecting set is upper bounded by $|G_ω|$, where $ω\inΩ$. A nice result of Meagher-Spiga-Tiep (2016) tells us that if $G$ is 2-transitive, then indeed $|S|\leqslant|G_ω|$. A natural next step would be to explore intersecting subsets for primitive groups and quasiprimitive groups. Our study in this paper shows that for quasiprimitive permutation groups, the size $|S|$ can be arbitrarily larger than $|G_ω|$. We conjecture that for quasiprimitve groups, the upperbound for $|S|$ is $O(|G_ω||Ω|^{1\over2})$. As a starting point, we prove that ${|S|/(|G_ω||Ω|^{1\over2}})\leqslant{\sqrt2/2}$ for all quasiprimitive actions of the Suzuki groups $G=\mathrm{Sz}(q)$. To show that our conjectured upper bound is tight, we provide examples of groups for which ${|S|/(|G_ω||Ω|^{1\over2}})$ is arbitrarily close to ${\sqrt2/2}$. As far as general transitive groups concerned, infinity families of examples produced show that the ratio ${|S|/(|G_ω||Ω|^{1\over2}})$ can be arbitrarily large.

All $3$-transitive groups satisfy the strict-EKR property
A subset $S$ of a transitive permutation group $G \leq \mathrm{Sym}(n)$ is said to be an intersecting set if, for every $g_{1},g_{2}\in S$, there is an $i \in [n]$ such that $g_{1}(i)=g_{2}(i)$. The stabilizer of a point in $[n]$ and its cosets are intersecting sets of size $|G|/n$. Such families are referred to as canonical intersecting sets. A result by Meagher, Spiga, and Tiep states that if $G$ is a $2$-transitive group, then $|G|/n$ is the size of an intersecting set of maximum size in $G$. In some $2$-transitive groups (for instance $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$, $\mathrm{Alt}(n)$), every intersecting set of maximum possible size is canonical. A permutation group, in which every intersecting family of maximum possible size is canonical, is said to satisfy the strict-EKR property. In this article, we investigate the structure of intersecting sets in $3$-transitive groups. A conjecture by Meagher and Spiga states that all $3$-transitive groups satisfy the strict-EKR property. Meagher and Spiga showed that this is true for the $3$-transitive group $\mathrm{PGL}(2,q)$. Using the classification of $3$-transitive groups and some results in literature, the conjecture reduces to showing that the $3$-transitive group $\mathrm{AGL}(n,2)$ satisfies the strict-EKR property. We show that $\mathrm{AGL}(n,2)$ satisfies the strict-EKR property and as a consequence, we prove Meagher and Spiga's conjecture. We also prove a stronger result for $\mathrm{AGL}(n,2)$ by showing that "large" intersecting sets in $\mathrm{AGL}(n,2)$ must be a subset of a canonical intersecting set. This phenomenon is called stability.
Cameron-Liebler sets in permutation groups
Consider a group $G$ acting on a set $Ω$, the vector $v_{a,b}$ is a vector with the entries indexed by the elements of $G$, and the $g$-entry is 1 if $g$ maps $a$ to $b$, and zero otherwise. A $(G,Ω)$-Cameron-Liebler set is a subset of $G$, whose indicator function is a linear combination of elements in $\{v_{a, b}\ :\ a, b \in Ω\}$. We investigate Cameron-Liebler sets in permutation groups, with a focus on constructions of Cameron-Liebler sets for 2-transitive groups.
Induced forests in some distance-regular graphs

In this article, we study the order and structure of the largest induced forests in some families of graphs. First we prove a variation of the ratio bound that gives an upper bound on the order of the largest induced forest in a graph. Next we define a \textsl{canonical induced forest} to be a forest that is formed by adding a vertex to a coclique and give several examples of graphs where the maximal forest is a canonical induced forest. These examples are all distance-regular graphs with the property that the Delsarte-Hoffman ratio bound for cocliques holds with equality. We conclude with some examples of related graphs where there are induced forests that are larger than a canonical forest.
Erdős-Ko-Rado problems for permutation groups
In this paper, we study intersecting sets in primitive and quasiprimitive permutation groups. Let $G \leqslant \mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ be a transitive permutation group, and ${S}$ an intersecting set. Previous results show that if $G$ is either 2-transitive or a Frobenius group, then $|{S}|\leqslant|G_ω|$ (for some $ω\in Ω$). Furthermore, for some 2-transitive groups, $|{S}|=|G_ω|$ if and only if ${S}$ is a coset of a stabilizer. In this paper, we prove that these statements are far from the truth for general transitive groups. In particular, we show that in the case of primitive groups, there is even no absolute constant $c$ such that $|{S}|\leqslant c|G_ω|$. In the case $G$ is a primitive permutation group isomorphic to $\mathrm{PSL(2,p)}$, we characterize the subgroups of $G$ which are intersecting sets. We also show that if $G \leqslant \mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ is a permutation group of prime power degree, then for any intersecting set $S$, we have $|S|\leq |G_ω|$ (for some $ω\in Ω$). This proves a part of a conjecture in \cite{MRS}.

Some formulae for coefficients in restricted $q$-products
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we derive some formulae involving coefficients of polynomials which occur quite naturally in the study of restricted partitions. Our method involves a recently discovered sieve technique by Li and Wan (Sci. China. Math. 2010). Based on this method, by considering cyclic groups of different orders we obtain some new results for these coefficients. The general result holds for any group of the form $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ where $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and expresses certain partial sums of coefficients in terms of expressions involving roots of unity. By specializing $N$ to different values, we see that these expressions simplify in some cases and we obtain several nice identities involving these coefficients. We also use a result of Sudler (QJMAAT 1964) to obtain an asymptotic formula for the maximum absolute value of these coefficients.

On sums of coefficients of polynomials related to the Borwein conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Li obtained an asymptotic formula for a certain partial sum involving coefficients for the polynomial in the First Borwein conjecture. As a consequence, he showed the positivity of this sum. His result was based on a sieving principle discovered by himself and Wan. In fact, Li points out in his paper that his method can be generalized to prove an asymptotic formula for a general partial sum involving coefficients for any prime $p>3$. In this work, we extend Li's method to obtain asymptotic formula for several partial sums of coefficients of a very general polynomial. We find that in the special cases $p=3, 5$, the signs of these sums are consistent with the three famous Borwein conjectures. Similar sums have been studied earlier by Zaharescu using a completely different method. We also improve on the error terms in the asymptotic formula for Li and Zaharescu. Using a recent result of Borwein, we also obtain an asymptotic estimate for the maximum of the absolute value of these coefficients for primes $p=2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13$ and for $p>15$, we obtain a lower bound on the maximum absolute value of these coefficients for sufficiently large $n$.

Difference families, skew Hadamard matrices, and Critical groups of doubly regular tournaments
In this paper we investigate the structure of the critical groups of doubly regular tournaments (DRTs) associated with skew Hadamard difference families (SDFs) with one, two, or four blocks. Brown and Reid found the existence of a skew Hadamard matrix of order $n+1$ to be equivalent to the existence of a DRT on $n$ vertices. A well known construction of a skew Hadamard matrix order $n$ is by constructing skew Hadamard difference sets in abelian groups of order $n-1$. The Paley skew Hadamard matrix is an example of one such construction. Szekeres and Whiteman constructed skew Hadamard matrices from skew Hadamard difference families with two blocks. Wallis and Whiteman constructed skew Hadamard matrices from skew Hadamard difference families with four blocks. In this paper we consider the critical groups of DRTs associated with skew Hadamard matrices constructed from skew Hadamard difference families with one, two or four blocks. We compute the critical groups of DRTs associated with skew Hadamard difference families with two or four blocks. We also compute the critical group of the Paley tournament and show that this tournament is inequivalent to the other DRTs we considered. Consequently we prove that the associated skew Hadamard matrices are not equivalent.

Critical groups of van Lint-Schrijver Cyclotomic Strongly Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The \emph{critical} group of a finite connected graph is an abelian group defined by the Smith normal form of its Laplacian. Let $q$ be a power of a prime and $H$ be a multiplicative subgroup of $K=\mathbb{F}_{q}$. By $\mathrm{Cay}(K,H)$ we denote the Cayley graph on the additive group of $K$ with `connection' set $H$. A strongly regular graph of the form $\mathrm{Cay}(K,H)$ is called a \emph{cyclotomic strongly regular graph}. Let $p$ and $\ell >2$ be primes such that $p$ is primitive $\pmod{\ell}$. We compute the \emph{critical} groups of a family of \emph{cyclotomic strongly regular graphs} for which $q=p^{(\ell-1)t}$ (with $t\in \mathbb{N}$) and $H$ is the unique multiplicative subgroup of order $k=\frac{q-1}{\ell}$. These graphs were first discovered by van Lint and Schrijver in \cite{VS}.

We compute the elementary divisors of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of families of polar graphs. These graphs have as vertices the isotropic one-dimensional subspaces of finite vector spaces with respect to non-degenerate forms, with adjacency given by orthogonality.
