Robustness of Erdős--Ko--Rado theorems on permutations and perfect matchings
The Erdős--Ko--Rado (EKR) theorem and its generalizations can be viewed as classifications of maximum independent sets in appropriately defined families of graphs, such as the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$. In this paper, we investigate the independence number of random spanning subraphs of two other families of graphs whose maximum independent sets satisfy an EKR-type characterization: the derangement graph on the set of permutations in $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$ and the derangement graph on the set $\mathcal{M}_{n}$ of perfect matchings in the complete graph $\mathcal{K}_{2n}$. In both cases, we show there is a sharp threshold probability for the event that the independence number of a random spanning subgraph is equal to that of the original graph. As a useful tool to aid our computations, we obtain a Friedgut--Kalai--Naor (FKN) type theorem on sparse boolean functions whose domain is the vertex set of $\mathcal{M}_{n}$. In particular, we show that boolean functions whose Fourier transforms are highly concentrated on the first two irreducible modules in the $\mathrm{Sym}(2n)$ module $\mathbb{C}[\mathcal{M}_{n}]$, is close to being the characteristic function of a union of maximum independent sets in the derangement graph on perfect matchings.

A generalized Turán extension of the Deza--Erdős--Frankl Theorem
For an integer $r \ge 3$ and a subset $L \subset [0,r-1]$, a graph $G$ is $(K_{r}, L)$-intersecting if the number of vertices in the intersection of every pair of $K_r$ in $G$ belongs to $L$. We study the maximum number of $K_r$ in an $n$-vertex $(K_{r}, L)$-intersecting graphs. The celebrated Ruzsa--Szemerédi Theorem corresponds to the case $r=3$ and $L = \{0,1\}$. For general $L$ with $2 \le |L| \le r-1$, we establish the upper bound $\left(1-\frac{1}{3r}\right) \prod_{\ell \in L}\frac{n-\ell}{r- \ell}$ for large $n$, which improves the bound provided by the celebrated Deza--Erdős--Frankl Theorem by a factor of $1-\frac{1}{3r}$. In the special case where $L = \{t, t+1, \ldots, r-1\}$, we derive the tight upper bound for large $n$ and establish a corresponding stability result. This is an extension of the seminal Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem on $t$-intersecting systems to the generalized Turán setting. Our proof for the Deza--Erdős--Frankl part involves an interesting combination of the $Δ$-system method and Turán's theorem. Meanwhile, for the Erdős--Ko--Rado part, we employ the stability method, which relies on a theorem of Frankl regarding $t$-intersecting systems.

Vector sum-intersection theorems
We introduce the following generalization of set intersection via characteristic vectors: for $n,q,s, t \ge 1$ a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \{0,1,\dots,q\}^n$ of vectors is said to be \emph{$s$-sum $t$-intersecting} if for any distinct $\mathbf{x},\mathbf{y}\in \mathcal{F}$ there exist at least $t$ coordinates, where the entries of $\mathbf{x}$ and $\mathbf{y}$ sum up to at least $s$, i.e.\ $|\{i:x_i+y_i\ge s\}|\ge t$. The original set intersection corresponds to the case $q=1,s=2$. We address analogs of several variants of classical results in this setting: the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem and the theorem of Bollobás on intersecting set pairs.

A proof of Frankl's conjecture on cross-union families
Published • View PublicationBIB
The families $\mathcal F_0,\ldots,\mathcal F_s$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ are called cross-union if there is no choice of $F_0\in \mathcal F_0, \ldots, F_s\in \mathcal F_s$ such that $F_0\cup\ldots\cup F_s=[n]$. A natural generalization of the celebrated Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, due to Frankl and Tokushige, states that for $n\le (s+1)k$ the geometric mean of $\lvert \mathcal F_i\rvert$ is at most $\binom{n-1}{k}$. Frankl conjectured that the same should hold for the arithmetic mean under some mild conditions. We prove Frankl's conjecture in a strong form by showing that the unique (up to isomorphism) maximizer for the arithmetic mean of cross-union families is the natural one $\mathcal F_0=\ldots=\mathcal F_s={[n-1]\choose k}$.

Erdős--Ko--Rado and Hilton--Milner theorems for two-forms

In this short note we show that both generalizations of celebrated Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem and Hilton--Milner theorem to the setting of exterior algebra in the simplest non-trivial case of two-forms follow from the folklore puzzle about possible arrangements of an intersecting family of lines.

Embedding dimensions of simplicial complexes on few vertices
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 27 (2023) 993-1003 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a simple characterization of simplicial complexes on few vertices that embed into the $d$-sphere. Namely, a simplicial complex on $d+3$ vertices embeds into the $d$-sphere if and only if its non-faces do not form an intersecting family. As immediate consequences, we recover the classical van Kampen--Flores theorem and provide a topological extension of the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem. By analogy with Fáry's theorem for planar graphs, we show in addition that such complexes satisfy the rigidity property that continuous and linear embeddability are equivalent.

A combinatorial viewpoint on preserving notion of largeness and an abstract Rado theorem
In this paper we will systematically study the preservation of the notion of largeness of sets, arises from the algebraic structure of Stone-Cech compactification, under homomorphism and difference group. Some of these results were studied previously using algebra of Stone-Cech compactification. But our approach is purely combinatorial.

An asymmetric random Rado theorem for single equations: the $0$-statement
Published • View PublicationBIB
A famous result of Rado characterises those integer matrices $A$ which are partition regular, i.e. for which any finite colouring of the positive integers gives rise to a monochromatic solution to the equation $Ax=0$. Aigner-Horev and Person recently stated a conjecture on the probability threshold for the binomial random set $[n]_p$ having the asymmetric random Rado property: given partition regular matrices $A_1, \dots, A_r$ (for a fixed $r \geq 2$), however one $r$-colours $[n]_p$, there is always a colour $i \in [r]$ such that there is an $i$-coloured solution to $A_i x=0$. This generalises the symmetric case, which was resolved by Rödl and Ruciński, and Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht. Aigner-Horev and Person proved the $1$-statement of their asymmetric conjecture. In this paper, we resolve the $0$-statement in the case where the $A_i x=0$ correspond to single linear equations. Additionally we close a gap in the original proof of the 0-statement of the (symmetric) random Rado theorem.

Intersecting families, signed sets, and injection

Let $k, r, n \geq 1$ be integers, and let $§_{n, k, r}$ be the family of $r$-signed $k$-sets on $[n] = \{1, \dots, n\}$ given by $$ \mathcal{S}_{n, k, r} = \Big\{\{(x_1, a_1), \dots, (x_k, a_k)\}: \{x_1, \dots, x_k\} \in \binom{[n]}{k}, a_1, \dots, a_k \in [r] \Big\}. $$ A family $\mathcal{A} \subseteq §_{n, k, r}$ is \emph{intersecting} if $A, B \in \mathcal{A}$ implies $A \cap B \not= \emptyset$. A well-known result (first stated by Meyer and proved using different methods by Deza and Frankl, and Bollobás and Leader) states that if $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{S}_{n, k, r}$ is intersecting, $r \geq 2$ and $1 \leq k \leq n$, then $$|\mathcal{A}| \leq r^{k-1}\binom{n-1}{k - 1}.$$ We provide a proof of this result by injection (in the same spirit as Frankl and Füredi's and Hurlbert and Kamat's injective proofs of the Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem, and Frankl's and Hurlbert and Kamat's injective proofs of the Hilton--Milner Theorem) whenever $r \geq 2$ and $1 \leq k \leq n/2$, leaving open only some cases when $k \leq n$.

An Asymmetric Random Rado Theorem: 1-statement
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result by Rado characterises the so-called partition-regular matrices $A$, i.e.\ those matrices $A$ for which any finite colouring of the positive integers yields a monochromatic solution to the equation $Ax=0$. We study the {\sl asymmetric} random Rado problem for the (binomial) random set $[n]_p$ in which one seeks to determine the threshold for the property that any $r$-colouring, $r \geq 2$, of the random set has a colour $i \in [r]$ admitting a solution for the matrical equation $A_i x = 0$, where $A_1,\ldots,A_r$ are predetermined partition-regular matrices pre-assigned to the colours involved. We prove a $1$-statement for the asymmetric random Rado property. In the symmetric setting our result retrieves the $1$-statement of the {\sl symmetric} random Rado theorem established in a combination of results by Rödl and Ruciński~\cite{RR97} and by Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht~\cite{FRS10}. We conjecture that our $1$-statement in fact unveils the threshold for the asymmetric random Rado property, yielding a counterpart to the so-called {\em Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture} concerning the threshold for the asymmetric random Ramsey problem in graphs. We deduce the aforementioned $1$-statement for the asymmetric random Rado property after establishing a broader result generalising the main theorem of Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht from~\cite{FRS10}. The latter then serves as a combinatorial framework through which $1$-statements for Ramsey-type problems in random sets and (hyper)graphs alike can be established in the asymmetric setting following a relatively short combinatorial examination of certain hypergraphs. To establish this framework we utilise a recent approach put forth by Mousset, Nenadov and Samotij~\cite{MNS18} for the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture.

Coloring cross-intersecting families
Published • View PublicationBIB
Intersecting and cross-intersecting families usually appear in extremal combinatorics in the vein of the Erd{\H o}s--Ko--Rado theorem. On the other hand, P.~Erd{\H o}s and L.~Lov{á}sz in the noted paper~\cite{EL} posed problems on coloring intersecting families as a restriction of classical hypergraph coloring problems to a special class of hypergraphs. This note deals with the mentioned coloring problems stated for cross-intersecting families.

A degree version of the Hilton--Milner theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
An intersecting family of sets is trivial if all of its members share a common element. Hilton and Milner proved a strong stability result for the celebrated Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem: when $n> 2k$, every non-trivial intersecting family of $k$-subsets of $[n]$ has at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}-\binom{n-k-1}{k-1}+1$ members. One extremal family $\mathcal{HM}_{n, k}$ consists of a $k$-set $S$ and all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ containing a fixed element $x\not\in S$ and at least one element of $S$. We prove a degree version of the Hilton--Milner theorem: if $n=Ω(k^2)$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is a non-trivial intersecting family of $k$-subsets of $[n]$, then $δ(\mathcal{F})\le δ(\mathcal{HM}_{n.k})$, where $δ(\mathcal{F})$ denotes the minimum (vertex) degree of $\mathcal{F}$. Our proof uses several fundamental results in extremal set theory, the concept of kernels, and a new variant of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem.

Independent sets in hypergraphs and Ramsey properties of graphs and the integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many important problems in combinatorics and other related areas can be phrased in the language of independent sets in hypergraphs. Recently Balogh, Morris and Samotij, and independently Saxton and Thomason developed very general container theorems for independent sets in hypergraphs; both of which have seen numerous applications to a wide range of problems. In this paper we use the container method to give relatively short and elementary proofs of a number of results concerning Ramsey (and Turán) properties of (hyper)graphs and the integers. In particular: (i) We generalise the random Ramsey theorem of Rödl and Ruciński by providing a resilience analogue. Our result unifies and generalises several fundamental results in the area including the random version of Turán's theorem due to Conlon and Gowers and Schacht. (ii) The above result also resolves a general subcase of the asymmetric random Ramsey conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter. (iii) All of the above results in fact hold for uniform hypergraphs. (iv) For a (hyper)graph $H$, we determine, up to an error term in the exponent, the number of $n$-vertex (hyper)graphs $G$ that have the Ramsey property with respect to $H$ (that is, whenever $G$ is $r$-coloured, there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$). (v) We strengthen the random Rado theorem of Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht by proving a resilience version of the result. (vi) For partition regular matrices $A$ we determine, up to an error term in the exponent, the number of subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ for which there exists an $r$-colouring which contains no monochromatic solutions to $Ax=0$. Along the way a number of open problems are posed.

Regular bipartite graphs and intersecting families
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a simple unifying approach to prove several statements about intersecting and cross-intersecting families, including the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem, the Hilton--Milner theorem, a theorem due to Frankl concerning the size of intersecting families with bounded maximal degree, and versions of results on the sum of sizes of non-empty cross-intersecting families due to Frankl and Tokushige. Several new stronger results are also obtained. Our approach is based on the use of regular bipartite graphs. These graphs are quite often used in Extremal Set Theory problems, however, the approach we develop proves to be particularly fruitful.

On the stability of some Erdős--Ko--Rado type results
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider classical Kneser's graph $K(n,r)$: for two natural numbers $ r, n $ such that $r \le n / 2$, its vertices are all the subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ of size $r$, and two such vertices are adjacent if the corresponding subsets are disjoint. The Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem states that the size of the largest independent set in this graph is $\binom{n-1}{r-1}$. Now let us delete each edge of the graph $K(n,r)$ with some fixed probability $p$ independently of each other. Quite surprisingly, the independence number of such random subgraph $K_p(n,r)$ of the graph $ K(n,r) $ is, with high probability, the same as the independence number of the initial graph. This phenomenon is called the stability of the independence number. This paper concerns the independence number of random subgraphs of the graph $G(n,r,1)$, which vertices are the same as in the Kneser graph and there is an edge between two vertices if they intersect in exactly one element. We prove the stability result for constant $r$ and $p=\frac{1}{2}$. To do that, we show that any sufficiently large independent set in $G(n,r,1)$ has some predefined structure, and this is a result of independent interest.
Intersecting families of discrete structures are typically trivial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of intersecting structures is central to extremal combinatorics. A family of permutations $\mathcal{F} \subset S_n$ is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two permutations in $\mathcal{F}$ agree on some $t$ indices, and is \emph{trivial} if all permutations in $\mathcal{F}$ agree on the same $t$ indices. A $k$-uniform hypergraph is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two of its edges have $t$ vertices in common, and \emph{trivial} if all its edges share the same $t$ vertices. The fundamental problem is to determine how large an intersecting family can be. Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel proved that for $n$ sufficiently large with respect to $t$, the largest $t$-intersecting families in $S_n$ are the trivial ones. The classic Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem shows that the largest $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform hypergraphs are also trivial when $n$ is large. We determine the \emph{typical} structure of $t$-intersecting families, extending these results to show that almost all intersecting families are trivial. We also obtain sparse analogues of these extremal results, showing that they hold in random settings. Our proofs use the Bollobás set-pairs inequality to bound the number of maximal intersecting families, which can then be combined with known stability theorems. We also obtain similar results for vector spaces.

On active and passive testing
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 1-20 • View PublicationBIB
Given a property of Boolean functions, what is the minimum number of queries required to determine with high probability if an input function satisfies this property or is "far" from satisfying it? This is a fundamental question in Property Testing, where traditionally the testing algorithm is allowed to pick its queries among the entire set of inputs. Balcan, Blais, Blum and Yang have recently suggested to restrict the tester to take its queries from a smaller random subset of polynomial size of the inputs. This model is called active testing, and in the extreme case when the size of the set we can query from is exactly the number of queries performed it is known as passive testing. We prove that passive or active testing of k-linear functions (that is, sums of k variables among n over Z_2) requires Theta(k*log n) queries, assuming k is not too large. This extends the case k=1, (that is, dictator functions), analyzed by Balcan et. al. We also consider other classes of functions including low degree polynomials, juntas, and partially symmetric functions. Our methods combine algebraic, combinatorial, and probabilistic techniques, including the Talagrand concentration inequality and the Erdos--Rado theorem on Delta-systems.

An Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem for matchings in the complete graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the following higher-order analog of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. For positive integers r and n with r<= n, let M^r_n be the family of all matchings of size r in the complete graph K_{2n}. For any edge e in E(K_{2n}), the family M^r_n(e), which consists of all sets in M^r_n containing e, is called the star centered at e. We prove that if r<n and A is an intersecting family of matchings in M^r_n, then |A|<=|M^r_n(e)|$, where e is an edge in E(K_{2n}). We also prove that equality holds if and only if A is a star. The main technique we use to prove the theorem is an analog of Katona's elegant cycle method.
An Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem for cross $t$-intersecting families
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 128 (2014), 207-249 • View PublicationBIB
Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set, are {\em cross $t$-intersecting} if for every choice of subsets $A \in \mathcal{A}$ and $B \in \mathcal{B}$ we have $|A \cap B| \geq t$. We address the following conjectured cross $t$-intersecting version of the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado Theorem: For all $n \geq (t+1)(k-t+1)$ the maximum value of $|\mathcal{A}||\mathcal{B}|$ for two cross $t$-intersecting families $\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B} \subset\binom{[n]}{k}$ is $\binom{n-t}{k-t}^2$. We verify this for all $t \geq 14$ except finitely many $n$ and $k$ for each fixed $t$. Further, we prove uniqueness and stability results in these cases, showing, for instance, that the families reaching this bound are unique up to isomorphism. We also consider a {\em $p$-weight} version of the problem, which comes from the product measure on the power set of an $n$-set.
