A random version of the Burr-Erdős-Spencer theorem
A well-known result of Burr, Erdős and Spencer [Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 1975] determines the $2$-colour Ramsey number for any sufficiently large collection of vertex-disjoint copies of a fixed graph $H$ without isolated vertices. In this short note we prove a random version of this result, thereby generalising the random Ramsey theorem of Rödl and Ruciński [Journal of the American Mathematical Society, 1995].

Cycle tilings and $H$-factors in directed graphs
We prove several results concerning cycle tilings and $H$-factors in digraphs. We provide a minimum semi-degree condition for forcing a digraph to contain a given spanning collection of vertex-disjoint orientations of cycles. Our result is asymptotically best possible for odd cycles and can be viewed as a digraph analogue of the El-Zahar conjecture. In addition, we asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for forcing an $H$-factor in a digraph for a range of digraphs $H$, including the cases when $H$ is a tree or anti-directed cycle. Furthermore, an asymptotically exact Ore-type result for forcing a transitive tournament factor in a digraph is proven. Several related open problems are also highlighted.

Notes on sum-free sets in abelian groups
In this paper we highlight a few open problems concerning maximal sum-free sets in abelian groups. In addition, for most even order abelian groups $G$ we asymptotically determine the number of maximal distinct sum-free subsets in $G$. Our proof makes use of the container method.

Arbitrary orientations of Hamilton cycles in directed graphs of large minimum degree
In 1960, Ghouila-Houri proved that every strongly connected directed graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n$ contains a directed Hamilton cycle. We asymptotically generalize this result by proving the following: every directed graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and with minimum degree at least $(1+o(1))n$ contains every orientation of a Hamilton cycle, except for the directed Hamilton cycle in the case when $G$ is not strongly connected. In fact, this minimum degree condition forces every orientation of a cycle in $G$ of every possible length, other than perhaps the directed cycles.

Ramsey-type problems for tilings in dense graphs
Given a graph $H$, the Ramsey number $R(H)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_n$ yields a monochromatic copy of $H$. We write $mH$ to denote the union of $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of $H$. The members of the family $\{mH:m\ge1\}$ are also known as $H$-tilings. A well-known result of Burr, Erdős and Spencer states that $R(mK_3)=5m$ for every $m\ge2$. On the other hand, Moon proved that every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_{3m+2}$ yields a $K_3$-tiling consisting of $m$ monochromatic copies of $K_3$, for every $m\ge2$. Crucially, in Moon's result, distinct copies of $K_3$ might receive different colours. In this paper, we investigate the analogous questions where the complete host graph is replaced by a graph of large minimum degree. We determine the (asymptotic) minimum degree threshold for forcing a~$K_3$-tiling covering a prescribed proportion of the vertices in a $2$-edge-coloured graph such that every copy of $K_3$ in the tiling is monochromatic. We also determine the largest size of a monochromatic $K_3$-tiling one can guarantee in any $2$-edge-coloured graph of large minimum degree. These results therefore provide generalisations of the theorems of Moon and Burr-Erdős-Spencer to the setting of dense graphs. It is also natural to consider generalisations of these problems to $r$-edge-colourings (for $r \geq 2$) and for $H$-tilings (for arbitrary graphs $H$). We prove some results in this direction and propose several open questions.
Powers of Hamilton cycles in oriented and directed graphs
The Pósa--Seymour conjecture determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing the $k$th power of a Hamilton cycle in a graph. After numerous partial results, Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi proved the conjecture for sufficiently large graphs. In this paper we focus on the analogous problem for digraphs and for oriented graphs. We asymptotically determine the minimum total degree threshold for forcing the square of a Hamilton cycle in a digraph. We also give a conjecture on the corresponding threshold for $k$th powers of a Hamilton cycle more generally. For oriented graphs, we provide a minimum semi-degree condition that forces the $k$th power of a Hamilton cycle; although this minimum semi-degree condition is not tight, it does provide the correct order of magnitude of the threshold. Turán-type problems for oriented graphs are also discussed.
Colour-bias perfect matchings in hypergraphs
We study conditions under which an edge-coloured hypergraph has a particular substructure that contains more than the trivially guaranteed number of monochromatic edges. Our main result solves this problem for perfect matchings under minimum degree conditions. This answers recent questions of Gishboliner, Glock and Sgueglia, and of Balogh, Treglown and Zárate-Guerén.

Typical Ramsey properties of the primes, abelian groups and other discrete structures
Given a matrix $A$ with integer entries, a subset $S$ of an abelian group and $r \in \mathbb N$, we say that $S$ is $(A,r)$-Rado if any $r$-colouring of $S$ yields a monochromatic solution to the system of equations $Ax=0$. A classical result of Rado characterises all those matrices $A$ such that $\mathbb N$ is $(A,r)$-Rado for all $r \in \mathbb N$. Rödl and Ruciński and Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht proved a random version of Rado's theorem where one considers a random subset of $[n]:=\{1,\dots,n\}$ instead of $\mathbb N$. In this paper, we investigate the analogous random Ramsey problem in the more general setting of abelian groups. Given a sequence $(S_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ of finite subsets of abelian groups, let $S_{n,p}$ be a random subset of $S_n$ obtained by including each element of $S_n$ independently with probability $p$. We are interested in determining the probability threshold $\hat p:=\hat p(n)$ such that $$\lim _{n \rightarrow \infty} \mathbb P [ S_{n,p} \text{ is } (A,r)\text{-Rado}]= \begin{cases} 0 &\text{ if } p=o(\hat p); \\ 1 &\text{ if } p=ω(\hat p). \end{cases}$$ Our main result, which we coin the random Rado lemma, is a general black box to tackle problems of this type. Using this tool in conjunction with a series of supersaturation results, we determine the probability threshold for a number of different cases. A consequence of the Green-Tao theorem is the van der Waerden theorem for the primes: every finite colouring of the primes contains arbitrarily long monochromatic arithmetic progressions. Using our machinery, we obtain a random version of this result. We also prove a novel supersaturation result for $S_n:=[n]^d$ and use it to prove an integer lattice generalisation of the random version of Rado's theorem. Various threshold results for abelian groups are also given.
A note on colour-bias perfect matchings in hypergraphs
A result of Balogh, Csaba, Jing and Pluhár yields the minimum degree threshold that ensures a $2$-coloured graph contains a perfect matching of significant colour-bias (i.e., a perfect matching that contains significantly more than half of its edges in one colour). In this note we prove an analogous result for perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. More precisely, for each $2\leq \ell <k$ and $r\geq 2$ we determine the minimum $\ell$-degree threshold for forcing a perfect matching of significant colour-bias in an $r$-coloured $k$-uniform hypergraph.

On some extremal and probabilistic questions for tree posets
Given two posets $P,Q$ we say that $Q$ is $P$-free if $Q$ does not contain a copy of $P$. The size of the largest $P$-free family in $2^{[n]}$, denoted by $La(n,P)$, has been extensively studied since the 1980s. We consider several related problems. Indeed, for posets $P$ whose Hasse diagrams are trees and have radius at most $2$, we prove that there are $2^{(1+o(1))La(n,P)}$ $P$-free families in $2^{[n]}$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós and Vizer [Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2021] in these cases. For such $P$ we also resolve the random version of the $P$-free problem, thus generalising the random version of Sperner's theorem due to Balogh, Mycroft and Treglown [Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 2014], and Collares Neto and Morris [Random Structures and Algorithms, 2016]. Additionally, we make a general conjecture that, roughly speaking, asserts that subfamilies of $2^{[n]}$ of size sufficiently above $La(n,P)$ robustly contain $P$, for any poset $P$ whose Hasse diagram is a tree.

Tiling edge-ordered graphs with monotone paths and other structures
Given graphs $F$ and $G$, a perfect $F$-tiling in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $F$ in $G$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. The study of the minimum degree threshold forcing a perfect $F$-tiling in a graph $G$ has a long history, culminating in the Kühn--Osthus theorem [Combinatorica 2009] which resolves this problem, up to an additive constant, for all graphs $F$. In this paper we initiate the study of the analogous question for edge-ordered graphs. In particular, we characterize for which edge-ordered graphs $F$ this problem is well-defined. We also apply the absorbing method to asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $P$-tiling in an edge-ordered graph, where $P$ is any fixed monotone path.
On oriented cycles in randomly perturbed digraphs

In 2003, Bohman, Frieze, and Martin initiated the study of randomly perturbed graphs and digraphs. For digraphs, they showed that for every $α>0$, there exists a constant $C$ such that for every $n$-vertex digraph of minimum semi-degree at least $αn$, if one adds $Cn$ random edges then asymptotically almost surely the resulting digraph contains a consistently oriented Hamilton cycle. We generalize their result, showing that the hypothesis of this theorem actually asymptotically almost surely ensures the existence of every orientation of a cycle of every possible length, simultaneously. Moreover, we prove that we can relax the minimum semi-degree condition to a minimum total degree condition when considering orientations of a cycle that do not contain a large number of vertices of indegree $1$. Our proofs make use of a variant of an absorbing method of Montgomery.
The induced saturation problem for posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed poset $P$, a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ is induced $P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $P$, but for every subset $S$ of $[n]$ such that $ S\not \in \mathcal F$, $P$ is an induced subposet of $\mathcal F \cup \{S\}$. The size of the smallest such family $\mathcal F$ is denoted by $\text{sat}^* (n,P)$. Keszegh, Lemons, Martin, Pálvölgyi and Patkós [Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 2021] proved that there is a dichotomy of behaviour for this parameter: given any poset $P$, either $\text{sat}^* (n,P)=O(1)$ or $\text{sat}^* (n,P)\geq \log _2 n$. In this paper we improve this general result showing that either $\text{sat}^* (n,P)=O(1)$ or $\text{sat}^* (n,P) \geq \min\{ 2 \sqrt{n}, n/2+1\}$. Our proof makes use of a Turán-type result for digraphs. Curiously, it remains open as to whether our result is essentially best possible or not. On the one hand, a conjecture of Ivan states that for the so-called diamond poset $\Diamond$ we have $\text{sat}^* (n,\Diamond)=Θ(\sqrt{n})$; so if true this conjecture implies our result is tight up to a multiplicative constant. On the other hand, a conjecture of Keszegh, Lemons, Martin, Pálvölgyi and Patkós states that given any poset $P$, either $\text{sat}^* (n,P)=O(1)$ or $\text{sat}^* (n,P)\geq n+1$. We prove that this latter conjecture is true for a certain class of posets $P$.

Dirac-type results for tilings and coverings in ordered graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent paper of Balogh, Li and Treglown initiated the study of Dirac-type problems for ordered graphs. In this paper we prove a number of results in this area. In particular, we determine asymptotically the minimum degree threshold for forcing (i) a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph, for any fixed ordered graph $H$ of interval chromatic number at least $3$; (ii) an $H$-tiling in an ordered graph $G$ covering a fixed proportion of the vertices of $G$ (for any fixed ordered graph $H$); (iii) an $H$-cover in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph $H$). The first two of these results resolve questions of Balogh, Li and Treglown whilst (iii) resolves a question of Falgas-Ravry. Note that (i) combined with a result of Balogh, Li and Treglown completely determines the asymptotic minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $H$-tiling. Additionally, we prove a result that combined with a theorem of Balogh, Li and Treglown, asymptotically determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing an almost perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph $H$). Our work therefore provides ordered graph analogues of the seminal tiling theorems of Kühn and Osthus [Combinatorica 2009] and of Komlós [Combinatorica 2000]. Each of our results exhibits some curious, and perhaps unexpected, behaviour. Our solution to (i) makes use of a novel absorbing argument.

On maximal sum-free sets in abelian groups

Balogh, Liu, Sharifzadeh and Treglown [Journal of the European Mathematical Society, 2018] recently gave a sharp count on the number of maximal sum-free subsets of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, thereby answering a question of Cameron and Erdős. In contrast, not as much is know about the analogous problem for finite abelian groups. In this paper we give the first sharp results in this direction, determining asymptotically the number of maximal sum-free sets in both the binary and ternary spaces $\mathbb Z^k_2$ and $\mathbb Z^k_3$. We also make progress on a conjecture of Balogh, Liu, Sharifzadeh and Treglown concerning a general lower bound on the number of maximal sum-free sets in abelian groups of a fixed order. Indeed, we verify the conjecture for all finite abelian groups with a cyclic component of size at least 3084. Other related results and open problems are also presented.

Complete subgraphs in a multipartite graph

In 1975 Bollobás, Erd\H os, and Szemerédi asked the following question: given positive integers $n, t, r$ with $2\le t\le r-1$, what is the largest minimum degree $δ(G)$ among all $r$-partite graphs $G$ with parts of size $n$ and which do not contain a copy of $K_{t+1}$? The $r=t+1$ case has attracted a lot of attention and was fully resolved by Haxell and Szabó, and Szabó and Tardos in 2006. In this paper we investigate the $r>t+1$ case of the problem, which has remained dormant for over forty years. We resolve the problem exactly in the case when $r \equiv -1 \pmod{t}$, and up to an additive constant for many other cases, including when $r \geq (3t-1)(t-1)$. Our approach utilizes a connection to the related problem of determining the maximum of the minimum degrees among the family of balanced $r$-partite $rn$-vertex graphs of chromatic number at most $t$.

On deficiency problems for graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by analogous questions in the setting of Steiner triple systems and Latin squares, Nenadov, Sudakov and Wagner [Completion and deficiency problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B, 2020] recently introduced the notion of graph deficiency. Given a global spanning property $\mathcal P$ and a graph $G$, the deficiency $\text{def}(G)$ of the graph $G$ with respect to the property $\mathcal P$ is the smallest non-negative integer $t$ such that the join $G*K_t$ has property $\mathcal P$. In particular, Nenadov, Sudakov and Wagner raised the question of determining how many edges an $n$-vertex graph $G$ needs to ensure $G*K_t$ contains a $K_r$-factor (for any fixed $r\geq 3$). In this paper we resolve their problem fully. We also give an analogous result which forces $G*K_t$ to contain any fixed bipartite $(n+t)$-vertex graph of bounded degree and small bandwidth.
A note on colour-bias Hamilton cycles in dense graphs

Balogh, Csaba, Jing and Pluhár recently determined the minimum degree threshold that ensures a $2$-coloured graph $G$ contains a Hamilton cycle of significant colour bias (i.e., a Hamilton cycle that contains significantly more than half of its edges in one colour). In this short note we extend this result, determining the corresponding threshold for $r$-colourings.
Extremal problems for multigraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $(n,s,q)$-graph is an $n$-vertex multigraph in which every $s$-set of vertices spans at most $q$ edges. Turán-type questions on the maximum of the sum of the edge multiplicities in such multigraphs have been studied since the 1990s. More recently, Mubayi and Terry [An extremal problem with a transcendental solution, Combinatorics Probability and Computing 2019] posed the problem of determining the maximum of the product of the edge multiplicities in $(n,s,q)$-graphs. We give a general lower bound construction for this problem for many pairs $(s,q)$, which we conjecture is asymptotically best possible. We prove various general cases of our conjecture, and in particular we settle a conjecture of Mubayi and Terry on the $(s,q)=(4,6a+3)$ case of the problem (for $a\geq2$); this in turn answers a question of Alon. We also determine the asymptotic behaviour of the problem for `sparse' multigraphs (i.e. when $q\leq 2\binom{s}{2}$). Finally we introduce some tools that are likely to be useful for attacking the problem in general.

Tilings in vertex ordered graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Over recent years there has been much interest in both Turán and Ramsey properties of vertex ordered graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of embedding spanning structures into vertex ordered graphs. In particular, we introduce a general framework for approaching the problem of determining the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph. In the (unordered) graph setting, this problem was resolved by Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009]. We use our general framework to resolve the perfect $H$-tiling problem for all ordered graphs $H$ of interval chromatic number $2$. Already in this restricted setting the class of extremal examples is richer than in the unordered graph problem. In the process of proving our results, novel approaches to both the regularity and absorbing methods are developed.
