Beating the Ahlswede--Khachatrian bound for the Erdős--Frankl--Pach problem
In the 1980s, Erdős and, independently, Frankl and Pach conjectured that, for sufficiently large $n$, every $(d+1)$-uniform family on $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with VC-dimension $d$ has size at most $\binom{n-1}{d}$, the size of a star. Ahlswede and Khachatrian disproved this conjecture in 1997 by giving a family of size $\binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}$. This value has since been widely believed to be best possible, and Mubayi and Zhao explicitly conjectured its optimality in 2007. Very recently, Wang, Xu and Zhang proved their conjecture for $d=2$ and $n\ge 7$, providing further support for this belief. Surprisingly, we show that the Mubayi-Zhao conjecture is false for every $d\ge 3$ by constructing families larger than the Ahlswede--Khachatrian bound. Our constructions suggest that the answer to the Erdős--Frankl--Pach problem depends delicately on both $n$ and $d$.
Littlewood-Offord bounds on the symmetric groups and applications
The anti-concentration phenomenon in probability theory has been intensively studied in recent years, with applications across many areas of mathematics. In most existing works, the ambient probability space is a product space generated by independent random variables. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of anti-concentration when the ambient space is the symmetric group, equipped with the uniform measure. Concretely, we focus on the random sum $S_π = \sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i\, v_{π(i)}$, where $w=(w_1,\dots,w_n)$ and $v=(v_1,\dots,v_n)$ are fixed vectors and $π$ is a uniformly random permutation. The paper contains several new results, addressing both discrete and continuous anti-concentration phenomena. On the discrete side, we establish a near-optimal structural characterization of the vectors $w$ and $v$ under the assumption that the concentration probability $\sup_x P(S_π=x)$ is polynomially large. As applications, we derive and strengthen a number of previous results. In particular, we show that if both $w$ and $v$ have distinct entries, then $\sup_x P(S_π=x) \le n^{-5/2+o(1)}$. This bound serves as a permutation-space analogue of the classical Erdős--Moser bound in the product-space setting and answers a question posed by Alon--Pohoata--Zhu. From the continuous perspective, we study the small-ball event $|S_π-L|\le δ$. We establish sharp bounds in various settings, including results exhibiting sub-gaussian decay in $L$. With additional effort, we are also able to treat the joint distribution of these events. Moreover, we provide a characterization of the vectors $w$ and $v$ for which these small-ball probabilities are large. As an application, we prove that the number of extremal points of random permutation polynomials is bounded by $O(\log n)$, extending results of S{ö}ze on the number of real roots.

Relative discrepancy of hypergraphs
Given $k$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ on $n$ vertices with densities $p$ and $q$, their relative discrepancy is defined as $\hbox{disc}(G,H)=\max\big||E(G')\cap E(H')|-pq\binom{n}{k}\big|$, where the maximum ranges over all pairs $G',H'$ with $G'\cong G$, $H'\cong H$, and $V(G')=V(H')$. Let $\hbox{bs}(k)$ denote the smallest integer $m \ge 2$ such that any collection of $m$ $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices with moderate densities contains a pair $G,H$ for which $\hbox{disc}(G,H) = Ω(n^{(k+1)/2})$. In this paper, we answer several questions raised by Bollobás and Scott, providing both upper and lower bounds for $\hbox{bs}(k)$. Consequently, we determine the exact value of $\hbox{bs}(k)$ for $2\le k\le 13$, and show $\hbox{bs}(k)=O(k^{0.525})$, substantially improving the previous bound $\hbox{bs}(k)\le k+1$ due to Bollobás-Scott. The case $k=2$ recovers a result of Bollobás-Scott, which generalises classical theorems of Erdős-Spencer, and Erdős-Goldberg-Pach-Spencer. The case $k=3$ also follows from the results of Bollobás-Scott and Kwan-Sudakov-Tran. Our proof combines linear algebra, Fourier analysis, and extremal hypergraph theory.

The edge-statistics conjecture for hypergraphs
Let $r,k,\ell$ be integers such that $0\le\ell\le\binom{k}{r}$. Given a large $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$, we consider the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets which span exactly $\ell$ edges. If $\ell$ is 0 or $\binom{k}{r}$, this fraction can be exactly 1 (by taking $G$ to be empty or complete), but for all other values of $\ell$, one might suspect that this fraction is always significantly smaller than 1. In this paper we prove an essentially optimal result along these lines: if $\ell$ is not 0 or $\binom{k}{r}$, then this fraction is at most $(1/e) + \varepsilon$, assuming $k$ is sufficiently large in terms of $r$ and $\varepsilon>0$, and $G$ is sufficiently large in terms of $k$. Previously, this was only known for a very limited range of values of $r,k,\ell$ (due to Kwan-Sudakov-Tran, Fox-Sauermann, and Martinsson-Mousset-Noever-Trujić). Our result answers a question of Alon-Hefetz-Krivelevich-Tyomkyn, who suggested this as a hypergraph generalisation of their "edge-statistics conjecture". We also prove a much stronger bound when $\ell$ is far from 0 and $\binom{k}{r}$.
On the order of intersecting hypergraphs
Determining the maximum number of edges in an intersecting hypergraph on a fixed ground set under additional constraints is one of the central topics in extremal combinatorics. In contrast, there are few results on analogous problems concerning the maximum order of such hypergraphs. In this paper, we systematically study these vertex analogues.

Graph with any rational density and no rich subsets of linear size
A well-known application of the dependent random choice asserts that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with positive edge density contains a `rich' vertex subset $U$ of size $n^{1-o(1)}$ such that every pair of vertices in $U$ has at least $n^{1-o(1)}$ common neighbors. In 2003, using a beautiful construction on hypercube, Kostochka and Sudakov showed that this is tight: one cannot remove the $o(1)$ terms even if the edge density of $G$ is $1/2$. In this paper, we generalize their result from pairs to tuples. To be precise, we show that given every pair of positive integers $p<q$, there is an $n$-vertex graph $G$ for all sufficiently large $n$ with edge density $p/q$ such that any vertex subset $U$ of size $Ω(n)$ contains $q$ vertices, any $p+1$ of which have $o(n)$ common neighbors. The edge density $p/q$ is best possible. Our construction uses isoperimetry and concentration of measure on high dimensional complex spheres.

Approximate packing of independent transversals in locally sparse graphs
Fix $\varepsilon >0$ and consider a multipartite graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $(1-\varepsilon)n$, parts $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ of the same size $n$, and where every vertex has at most $o(n)$ neighbors in any part $V_i$. Loh and Sudakov proved that any such $G$ has an independent transversal. They further conjectured that the vertex set of $G$ can be decomposed into pairwise disjoint independent transversals. In the present paper, we resolve this conjecture approximately by showing that $G$ contains $(1-\varepsilon)n$ pairwise disjoint independent transversals. As applications, we give approximate answers to questions of Yuster, and of Fischer, Kühn, and Osthus.

Variants of VC dimension and their applications to dynamics
Since its introduction by Vapnik and Chervonenkis in the 1960s, the VC dimension and its variants have played a central role in numerous fields. In this paper, we investigate several variants of the VC dimension and their applications to dynamical systems. First, we prove a new bound for a recently introduced generalization of VC dimension, which unifies and extends various extremal results on the VC, Natarajan, and Steele dimensions. This new bound allows us to strengthen one of the main theorems of Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] in dynamical systems. Second, we refine a key lemma of Huang and Ye related to a variant of VC dimension by providing a more concise and conceptual proof. We also highlight a surprising connection among this result, combinatorics, dynamical systems, and recent advances in communication complexity.

Rainbow cycles in properly edge-colored graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $100(\log n)^2$ contains a rainbow cycle, improving upon $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ bound due to Tomon. We also prove that every properly colored $n$-vertex graph with at least $10^5 k^2 n^{1+1/k}$ edges contains a rainbow $2k$-cycle, which improves the previous bound $2^{ck^2}n^{1+1/k}$ obtained by Janzer. Our method using homomorphism inequalities and a lopsided regularization lemma also provides a simple way to prove the Erdős--Simonovits supersaturation theorem for even cycles, which may be of independent interest.

A proof of Frankl's conjecture on cross-union families
Published • View PublicationBIB
The families $\mathcal F_0,\ldots,\mathcal F_s$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ are called cross-union if there is no choice of $F_0\in \mathcal F_0, \ldots, F_s\in \mathcal F_s$ such that $F_0\cup\ldots\cup F_s=[n]$. A natural generalization of the celebrated Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, due to Frankl and Tokushige, states that for $n\le (s+1)k$ the geometric mean of $\lvert \mathcal F_i\rvert$ is at most $\binom{n-1}{k}$. Frankl conjectured that the same should hold for the arithmetic mean under some mild conditions. We prove Frankl's conjecture in a strong form by showing that the unique (up to isomorphism) maximizer for the arithmetic mean of cross-union families is the natural one $\mathcal F_0=\ldots=\mathcal F_s={[n-1]\choose k}$.

Exponential decay of intersection volume with applications on list-decodability and Gilbert-Varshamov type bound
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give some natural sufficient conditions for balls in a metric space to have small intersection. Roughly speaking, this happens when the metric space is (i) expanding and (ii) well-spread, and (iii) a certain random variable on the boundary of a ball has a small tail. As applications, we show that the volume of intersection of balls in Hamming, Johnson spaces and symmetric groups decay exponentially as their centers drift apart. To verify condition (iii), we prove some large deviation inequalities `on a slice' for functions with Lipschitz conditions. We then use these estimates on intersection volumes to $\bullet$ obtain a sharp lower bound on list-decodability of random $q$-ary codes, confirming a conjecture of Li and Wootters; and $\bullet$ improve the classical bound of Levenshtein from 1971 on constant weight codes by a factor linear in dimension, resolving a problem raised by Jiang and Vardy. Our probabilistic point of view also offers a unified framework to obtain improvements on other Gilbert--Varshamov type bounds, giving conceptually simple and calculation-free proofs for $q$-ary codes, permutation codes, and spherical codes. Another consequence is a counting result on the number of codes, showing ampleness of large codes.
Maximal $3$-wise intersecting families
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family $\mathcal{F}$ on ground set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ is maximal $k$-wise intersecting if every collection of at most $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has non-empty intersection, and no other set can be added to $\mathcal{F}$ while maintaining this property. In 1974, Erdős and Kleitman asked for the minimum size of a maximal $k$-wise intersecting family. We answer their question for $k=3$ and sufficiently large $n$. We show that the unique minimum family is obtained by partitioning the ground set $[n]$ into two sets $A$ and $B$ with almost equal sizes and taking the family consisting of all the proper supersets of $A$ and of $B$.
Majority dynamics on sparse random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Majority dynamics on a graph $G$ is a deterministic process such that every vertex updates its $\pm 1$-assignment according to the majority assignment on its neighbor simultaneously at each step. Benjamini, Chan, O'Donnel, Tamuz and Tan conjectured that, in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, the random initial $\pm 1$-assignment converges to a $99\%$-agreement with high probability whenever $p=ω(1/n)$. This conjecture was first confirmed for $p\geqλn^{-1/2}$ for a large constant $λ$ by Fountoulakis, Kang and Makai. Although this result has been reproved recently by Tran and Vu and by Berkowitz and Devlin, it was unknown whether the conjecture holds for $p< λn^{-1/2}$. We break this $Ω(n^{-1/2})$-barrier by proving the conjecture for sparser random graphs $G(n,p)$, where $λ' n^{-3/5}\log n \leq p \leq λn^{-1/2}$ with a large constant $λ'>0$.

Two problems in graph Ramsey theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 104 (2022), 103552 • View PublicationBIB
We study two problems in graph Ramsey theory. In the early 1970's, Erdős and O'Neil considered a generalization of Ramsey numbers. Given integers $n,k,s$ and $t$ with $n \ge k \ge s,t \ge 2$, they asked for the least integer $N=f_k(n,s,t)$ such that in any red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2,\ldots, N\}$, there is a set of size $n$ such that either each of its $s$-subsets is contained in some red $k$-subset, or each of its $t$-subsets is contained in some blue $k$-subset. Erdős and O'Neil found an exact formula for $f_k(n,s,t)$ when $k\ge s+t-1$. In the arguably more interesting case where $k=s+t-2$, they showed $2^{-\binom{k}{2}}n<\log f_k(n,s,t)<2n$ for sufficiently large $n$. Our main result closes the gap between these lower and upper bounds, determining the logarithm of $f_{s+t-2}(n,s,t)$ up to a multiplicative factor. Recently, Damásdi, Keszegh, Malec, Tompkins, Wang and Zamora initiated the investigation of saturation problems in Ramsey theory, wherein one seeks to minimize $n$ such that there exists an $r$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ for which any extension of this to an $r$-edge-coloring of $K_{n+1}$ would create a new monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We obtain essentially sharp bounds for this problem.

The smallest singular value of random combinatorial matrices
Let $Q_n$ be a random $n\times n$ matrix with entries in $\{0,1\}$ whose rows are independent vectors of exactly $n/2$ zero components. We show that the smallest singular value $s_n(Q_n)$ of $Q_n$ satisfies \[ \mathbb{P}\Big\{s_n(Q_n)\le \frac{\varepsilon}{\sqrt{n}}\Big\} \le C\varepsilon + 2 e^{-cn} \quad \forall \varepsilon \ge 0, \] which is optimal up to the constants $C,c>0$. This improves on earlier results of Ferber, Jain, Luh and Samotij, as well as Jain. In particular, for $\varepsilon=0$, we obtain the first exponential bound in dimension for the singularity probability \[ \mathbb{P}\big\{Q_n \,\,\text{is singular}\big\} \le 2 e^{-cn}.\] To overcome the lack of independence between entries of $Q_n$, we introduce an arithmetic-combinatorial invariant of a pair of vectors, which we call a Combinatorial Least Common Denominator (CLCD). We prove a small ball probability inequality for the combinatorial statistic $\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_iv_{σ(i)}$ in terms of the CLCD of the pair $(a,v)$, where $σ$ is a uniformly random permutation of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and $a:=(a_1,\ldots,a_n), v:=(v_1,\ldots,v_n)$ are real vectors. This inequality allows us to derive strong anti-concentration properties for the distance between a fixed row of $Q_n$ and the linear space spanned by the remaining rows, and prove the main result.

Dense induced bipartite subgraphs in triangle-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of finding dense induced bipartite subgraphs in $H$-free graphs has a long history, and was posed 30 years ago by Erdős, Faudree, Pach and Spencer. In this paper, we obtain several results in this direction. First we prove that any $K_t$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph of minimum degree at least $c_t \log d/\log \log d$, confirming (asymptotically) several conjectures by Esperet, Kang and Thomassé. Complementing this result, we further obtain optimal bounds for this problem in the case of dense triangle-free graphs, and we also answer a question of Erdős, Janson, Łuczak and Spencer.
Nearly-linear monotone paths in edge-ordered graphs
How long a monotone path can one always find in any edge-ordering of the complete graph $K_n$? This appealing question was first asked by Chvátal and Komlós in 1971, and has since attracted the attention of many researchers, inspiring a variety of related problems. The prevailing conjecture is that one can always find a monotone path of linear length, but until now the best known lower bound was $n^{2/3-o(1)}$. In this paper we almost close this gap, proving that any edge-ordering of the complete graph contains a monotone path of length $n^{1-o(1)}$.

Anticoncentration for subgraph statistics

Consider integers $k,\ell$ such that $0\le \ell \le \binom{k}2$. Given a large graph $G$, what is the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets of $G$ which span exactly $\ell$ edges? When $G$ is empty or complete, and $\ell$ is zero or $\binom{k}{2}$, this fraction can be exactly 1. On the other hand, if $\ell$ is far from these extreme values, one might expect that this fraction is substantially smaller than 1. This was recently proved by Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn who intiated the systematic study of this question and proposed several natural conjectures. Let $\ell^{*}=\min\{\ell,\binom{k}{2}-\ell\}$. Our main result is that for any $k$ and $\ell$, the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets that span $\ell$ edges is at most $\log^{O\left(1\right)}\left(\ell^{*}/k\right)\sqrt{k/\ell^{*}}$, which is best-possible up to the logarithmic factor. This improves on multiple results of Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn, and resolves one of their conjectures. In addition, we also make some first steps towards some analogous questions for hypergraphs. Our proofs involve some Ramsey-type arguments, and a number of different probabilistic tools, such as polynomial anticoncentration inequalities, hypercontractivity, and a coupling trick for random variables defined on a "slice" of the Boolean hypercube.

Colouring set families without monochromatic k-chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
A coloured version of classic extremal problems dates back to Erdős and Rothschild, who in 1974 asked which $n$-vertex graph has the maximum number of 2-edge-colourings without monochromatic triangles. They conjectured that the answer is simply given by the largest triangle-free graph. Since then, this new class of coloured extremal problems has been extensively studied by various researchers. In this paper we pursue the Erdős--Rothschild versions of Sperner's Theorem, the classic result in extremal set theory on the size of the largest antichain in the Boolean lattice, and Erdős' extension to $k$-chain-free families. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]$, we define an $(r,k)$-colouring of $\mathcal{F}$ to be an $r$-colouring of the sets without any monochromatic $k$-chains $F_1 \subset F_2 \subset \dots \subset F_k$. We prove that for $n$ sufficiently large in terms of $k$, the largest $k$-chain-free families also maximise the number of $(2,k)$-colourings. We also show that the middle level, $\binom{[n]}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$, maximises the number of $(3,2)$-colourings, and give asymptotic results on the maximum possible number of $(r,k)$-colourings whenever $r(k-1)$ is divisible by three.
Structure and Supersaturation for Intersecting Families

The extremal problems regarding the maximum possible size of intersecting families of various combinatorial objects have been extensively studied. In this paper, we investigate supersaturation extensions, which in this context ask for the minimum number of disjoint pairs that must appear in families larger than the extremal threshold. We study the minimum number of disjoint pairs in families of permutations and in $k$-uniform set families, and determine the structure of the optimal families. Our main tool is a removal lemma for disjoint pairs. We also determine the typical structure of $k$-uniform set families without matchings of size $s$ when $n \ge 2sk + 38s^4$, and show that almost all $k$-uniform intersecting families on vertex set $[n]$ are trivial when $n\ge (2+o(1))k$.
