Equality Cases for the Face-Degree Majorization Theorem on Simplicial Complexes
The Grone--Merris--Bai theorem states that the Laplacian spectrum of a simple graph is majorized by its conjugate degree sequence. Recently, Zhang, Song, and Fan extended this result to simplicial complexes by establishing a majorization relation between the spectrum of the $(r-1)$-dimensional up-Laplacian and the conjugate $(r-1)$-degree sequence. In this paper, we characterize all equality cases in the partial-sum inequalities of this higher-dimensional majorization theorem. For every $r$-dimensional simplicial complex $X$ with $r\ge2$, we prove that \[ \sum_{i=1}^{q}λ_{r-1,i}(X) = \sum_{i=1}^{q}d_{r-1,i}^{\top}(X) \] if and only if \[ q\ge \max\{\operatorname{rank}B_r(X),Δ_{r-1}(X)\}. \] Thus, unlike the graph case, equality can occur only after both sequences have exhausted all their nonzero terms. As consequences, equality in the first partial sum and equality between the entire sequences are both equivalent to $X$ containing a unique $r$-simplex. The proof is based on the local down-Laplacian decomposition and the equality case of the Ky Fan inequality.

A Spectral Hilton--Milner--Frankl Theorem for $t$-Intersecting Families
Keevash, Lenz, and Mubayi proved a spectral Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, showing that, for sufficiently large $n$, the complete $t$-star uniquely maximizes the adjacency-tensor spectral radius among all $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform families. In this paper, we establish a spectral Hilton--Milner--Frankl theorem for nontrivial $t$-intersecting families in the explicit range $1\le t\le k-2$ and $n\ge 100\cdot 2^k k^7$. More precisely, we prove that, for every nontrivial $t$-intersecting $k$-uniform family $\mathcal F$, the spectral radius satisfies \[ ρ(\mathcal F)\le \max\{ρ(\mathcal H_{n,k,t}),ρ(\mathcal A_{n,k,t})\}, \] where $\mathcal H_{n,k,t}$ and $\mathcal A_{n,k,t}$ are the two extremal families appearing in the classical Hilton--Milner--Frankl theorem. Moreover, equality holds only for the extremal candidates attaining the maximum, up to isomorphism. We further compare the two candidates asymptotically. For each fixed $t$, the unique real solution $x=x_t$ of \[ (t+2)^{x-t-1}(t+1)^{t+1}=(x-t+1)^{x-1} \] determines, as $k$ varies, which of $\mathcal H_{n,k,t}$ and $\mathcal A_{n,k,t}$ has the larger asymptotic spectral radius.

An improved range for the maximum critically $t$-intersecting hypergraphs
Let $k>t\ge 1$ be integers and set $d=k-t$. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal F$ is called $t$-intersecting if any two edges intersect in at least $t$ vertices, and is called $t$-critical if its minimum $t$-transversal has size $k$. Frankl proved that, for $k\ge d^4$,$|\mathcal F|\le \binom{k+d}{d},$ with equality only for the complete $k$-graph on $k+d$ vertices, and conjectured that the same conclusion should hold when $k>c d^2$ for some constant $c$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture for $c=30$. The proof relies on Frankl's fixed-edge decomposition and Füredi's pseudo-sunflower method.

On a conjecture regarding the product version of the Hilton-Milner theorem
Recently, Frankl and Wang considered a product version of the classical Hilton-Milner theorem. They conjectured that, if $\mathcal{F} \subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ and $\mathcal{G} \subset \binom{[n]}{\ell}$ are non-trivial cross-intersecting families with $n \geq 2k > 2\ell \geq 4$, the maximum of $|\mathcal{F}||\mathcal{G}|$ is attained by the natural Hilton-Milner-type configurations. In this paper, we present two main results concerning this conjecture. Firstly, we show that the conjecture does not hold in general. By introducing a two-center construction, we prove that for every fixed integer $\ell \geq 3$ and all sufficiently large $k$, the conjecture is false in a linear range $2k+1 \leq n \leq (c_\ell - ε)k$ for any $0 < ε< c_\ell - 2$, where $c_\ell > 2$ is an explicit constant. Secondly, we prove that the conjecture holds when $n > 100\ell k^2$ and $3 \leq \ell < k$, and we completely characterize the extremal families. Our proofs rely on the size of minimal covers and analyzing the structural properties of $2$-cover graphs.

The Second Largest Eigenvalue of Stiffness Matrices of Normalized Complete Frameworks
Let $R(G,p)$ be the normalized rigidity matrix of a framework $(G,p)$ in $\mathbb R^d$, and let \[ L(G,p)=R(G,p)R(G,p)^{T} \] be the associated stiffness matrix. We study the extremal eigenvalues of $L(K_n,p)$ for complete frameworks whose vertices lie on the unit sphere and have centroid at the origin. Our main result shows that, whenever $d\ge2$ and the image of $p$ contains at least three distinct points, the second largest eigenvalue of $L(K_n,p)$ is exactly $n/2$. This settles the eigenvalue part of a conjecture of Lew et al. [Israel J. Math. 256, 2023]. We further construct an infinite family of examples, given by regular polygons embedded in a two-dimensional subspace, for which the eigenvalue $n/2$ has multiplicity $2n-4$. Consequently, the multiplicity predicted in the conjecture is not correct in general. Our results reveal a dichotomy: the value of the second largest eigenvalue is universal, while its multiplicity is sensitive to the geometry of the underlying point configuration.

On the sum of the two largest eigenvalues of the curl-curl operator on graphs
The Grone--Merris conjecture, proved by Bai in~2011, states that the spectrum of the graph Laplacian $Δ_0 = -\operatorname{div}\operatorname{grad}$ is majorized by the conjugate of the vertex degree sequence. Duval and Reiner proposed a simplicial complex analogue of this statement. On a graph, where triangles serve as $2$-simplices, their conjecture reduces to the assertion that the spectrum of $\operatorname{curl}^*\operatorname{curl}$ is majorized by the conjugate of the second-order degree sequence, which records the number of triangles containing each vertex. We prove that the sum of the two largest eigenvalues of $\operatorname{curl}^*\operatorname{curl}$ does not exceed the sum of the first two entries of that conjugate sequence. This confirms the first two majorization inequalities predicted by Duval and Reiner for $\operatorname{curl}^*\operatorname{curl}$. As a corollary, we obtain upper bounds for the two largest eigenvalues of the full graph Helmholtzian $Δ_1 = -\operatorname{grad}\operatorname{div} + \operatorname{curl}^*\operatorname{curl}$. The same result extends to the up-Laplacian of any $3$-family, yielding a concrete step towards the Duval--Reiner conjecture in dimension~$1$.
Helmholzian Spectra of Graphs: Novel Properties
Let $\grad$, $\curl$, and $\dv$ be the graph-theoretic analogues of the gradient, curl, and divergence operators from multivariate calculus. The graph Laplacian $-\dv \grad$ gives rise to the celebrated Laplacian matrix, while the matrix representation of the graph Helmholtzian $\grad \grad^* + \curl^* \curl$ is called the Helmholtzian matrix. In this paper, we present a new graph-theoretic proof that the Helmholtzian matrix indeed represents the graph Helmholtzian. We then investigate the spectral properties of this matrix. Our main results are as follows: (i) a classification of graphs having exactly two distinct Helmholtzian eigenvalues; (ii) the nullity of the Helmholtzian matrix; and (iii) a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the Helmholtzian polynomial. Furthermore, we determine the Helmholtzian spectrum for certain graph products and characterize Helmholtzian integral graphs, as well as derive bounds for the smallest Helmholtzian eigenvalue. Meanwhile, we pose some open problems for future research.
Helmholzian spectra of graphs: basic properties
The Helmholtzian matrix of a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$ is a graph-theoretic analogue of the vector Laplacian (or Helmholtz operator) [S. Li, L. Lu, J.F. Wang, A graph discretization of vector Laplacian, 379 (2026) 446--460]. Motivated by the applications of graph Helmholtzian in simplicial networks, we will investiagte its basic spectral properties. As the first graph matrix indexed by edge set, we find that Helmholtzian matrix is positive semi-definite and its non-negativity correlates with the odd cycles in $G$ and the orientation on $E(G)$, while its irreducibility relates to the signed graphs with loops. We show that the eigenvalues of Helmholtzian matrix are independent of the orientation and further investigate the eigenvalue interlacing under edge additions. One of striking findings is that the non-zero eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix are those of Helmholtzian matrix of every graph. All these discoveries reveal that the Helmholtzian spectrum of $G$ balances and bridges the oriented graphs, weighted graphs and signed graphs as well as their adjacency or Laplacian spectra.

Subspace variations of the weighted skew Bollobás theorem
Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional real vector space. A collection $\mathcal{P} = \{(A_i,B_i)\}_{i=1}^m$ of pairs of subspaces of $V$ is called a skew Bollobás system if $\dim(A_i\cap B_i)=0$ for each $i\in [m]$ and $\dim(A_i\cap B_j)>0$ for all $1\leq i<j \leq m$. Assume that $V = V^{(1)}\oplus \cdots \oplus V^{(r)}$ and $\mathcal{P}= \{(A_i,B_i)\}_{i=1}^m$ is a skew Bollobás system of subspaces of $V$ satisfying $ A_i = \bigoplus_{k=1}^r (A_i \cap V^{(k)})$ and $ B_i = \bigoplus_{k=1}^r (B_i \cap V^{(k)})$ for each $i\in [m]$. Denote $a_{i,k} = \dim(A_i \cap V^{(k)})$ and $b_{i,k} = \dim(B_i \cap V^{(k)})$. Suppose that $a_{1,k} \le \cdots \le a_{m,k}$ and $b_{1,k} \ge \cdots \ge b_{m,k}$ for each $k\in [r]$. Using the exterior algebraic method developed by Lovász and Scott--Wilmer, we prove that $$ \sum_{i=1}^{m} \frac{1}{\prod_{k=1}^{r} \binom{a_{i,k}+b_{i,k}}{a_{i,k}}} \le 1 . $$ This generalizes the results of Alon (JCTA, 1985) and Scott--Wilmer (JLMS, 2021) to multipart weighted setting. Secondly, we solve a conjecture of Hegedüs (AJC, 2015) concerning projective subspaces, showing that any skew Bollobás system of projective subspaces in an $n$-dimensional projective space contains at most $2^{n+1} - 2$ pairs. Thirdly, we prove that if $\mathcal{P}= \{(A_i,B_i)\}_{i=1}^m$ is a skew Bollobás system of subspaces of $V$ with $a_i=\dim (A_i)$ and $b_i=\dim (B_i)$, then $$ \sum_{i=1}^m \frac{1}{(a_i+ b_i+1)\binom{a_i+b_i}{a_i}} \le 1. $$ This gives an extension to the subspace setting of the results of Hegedüs--Frankl (EUJC, 2024) and Yue (DM, 2026). Finally, we extend the above inequality to systems of $d$-tuples of subspaces, giving a unified bound that implies the corresponding results for $d$-tuples of subsets.

Spectral bounds for vertex-weighted Laplacians of simplicial complexes
The vertex-weighted Laplacian naturally extends the combinatorial Laplacian for simplicial complexes. Inspired by Lew's foundational techniques for vertex-weighted Laplacians, we present a comprehensive spectral analysis of this operator. First, we determine how basic operations, including joins, complements, and Alexander duals, affect its spectrum. This yields a sharp upper bound on the spectral radius in terms of vertex weights, along with a lower bound on the multiplicity at which this bound is attained. Second, we establish a sharp lower bound for the spectral gap and characterize when the equality holds. Third, explicit lower bounds for the remaining eigenvalues are derived, linking the vertex-weighted Laplacian spectrum to that of a related weighted graph. Finally, we reveal new spectral relations between a simplicial complex and its subcomplexes. These results not only generalize numerous known theorems on combinatorial Laplacians but also provide deeper spectral insights into simplicial structures, ultimately unifying and extending a broad range of earlier work in this field.

Spectral extremal problem of the $p$th power of cycles
For a cycle $C_k$ on $k$ vertices, its $p$-th power, denoted $C_k^p$, is the graph obtained by adding edges between all pairs of vertices at distance at most $p$ in $C_k$. Let $\ex(n, F)$ and $\spex(n, F)$ denote the maximum possible number of edges and the maximum possible spectral radius, respectively, among all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. In this paper, we determine precisely the unique extremal graph achieving $\ex(n, C_k^p)$ and $\spex(n, C_k^p)$ for sufficiently large $n$.

Combinatorial Laplacians and Relative Homology of Complex Pairs
As a discretization of the Hodge Laplacian, the combinatorial Laplacian of simplicial complexes has garnered significant attention. In this paper, we study combinatorial Laplacians for complex pairs $(X, A)$, where $A$ is a subcomplex of a simplicial complex $X$. We establish a relative version of the matrix-tree theorem for complex pairs, which generalizes both the matrix-tree theorem for simplicial complexes proved by Duval, Klivans, and Martin (2009) and the result for Dirichlet eigenvalues of graph pairs by Chung (1996). Furthermore, we derive several lower bounds for the spectral gaps of complex pairs and characterize the equality case for one sharp lower bound. As by-products, we obtain sufficient conditions for the vanishing of relative homology. Our results demonstrate that the combinatorial Laplacians for complex pairs are closely related to relative homology.

Spectral extremal problem for the odd prism
The spectral Turán number $\spex(n, F)$ denotes the maximum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ of an $F$-free graph $G$ of order $n$. This paper determines $\spex\left(n, C_{2k+1}^{\square}\right)$ for all sufficiently large $n$, establishing the unique extremal graph. Here, $C_{2k+1}^{\square}$ is the odd prism -- the Cartesian product $C_{2k+1} \square K_2$ -- where the Cartesian product $G \square F$ has vertex set $V(G) \times V(F)$, and edges between $(u_1,v_1)$ and $(u_2,v_2)$ if either $u_1 = u_2$ and $v_1v_2 \in E(F)$, or ($v_1 = v_2$ and $u_1u_2 \in E(G)$).

Fourier analysis on distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups
The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In 2003, Miklavič and Potočnik [European J. Combin. 24 (2003) 777--784] expanded upon this field by achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups through the method of Schur rings. Building on this work, Miklavič and Potočnik [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33] formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for arbitrary classes of groups. Within this framework, abelian groups hold particular significance, as numerous distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we employ Fourier analysis on abelian groups to establish connections between distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups and combinatorial objects in finite geometry. By combining these insights with classical results from finite geometry, we classify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime.

A spectral Erdős-Rademacher theorem
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 158 (2024) 102720 • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of Erdős and Rademacher (1955) indicates a supersaturation phenomenon. It says that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with at least $\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \rfloor +1$ edges, then $G$ contains at least $\lfloor {n}/{2}\rfloor$ triangles. We prove a spectral version of Erdős--Rademacher's theorem. Moreover, Mubayi [Adv. Math. 225 (2010)] extends the result of Erdős and Rademacher from a triangle to any color-critical graph. It is interesting to study the extension of Mubayi from a spectral perspective. However, it is not apparent to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph comparing to the traditional edge version (Mubayi's result). In this paper, we provide a way to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph and propose a spectral version on the counting problems for color-critical graphs.

Distance-regular Cayley graphs over (pseudo-) semi-dihedral groups
Distance-regular graphs are a class of regualr graphs with pretty combinatorial symmetry. In 2007, Miklavič and Potočnik proposed the problem of charaterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as a natural extension of the problem of characterizing strongly-regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets). In this paper, we provide a partial characterization for distance-regular Cayley graphs over semi-dihedral groups and pseudo-semi-dihedral groups, both of which are $2$-groups with a cyclic subgroup of index $2$.

Distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$
In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavič and Potočnik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Spectral extremal graphs for the bowtie
Published in Discrete Mathematics 346 (2023) 113680 • View PublicationBIB
Let $F_k$ be the (friendship) graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. The $F_k$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)], and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)] under the condition that $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we get rid of the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large if $k=2$. The graph $F_2$ is also known as the bowtie. We show that the unique $n$-vertex $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the balanced complete bipartite graph adding an edge in the vertex part with smaller size if $n\ge 7$, and the condition $n\ge 7$ is tight. Our result is a spectral generalization of a theorem of Erdős, Füredi, Gould and Gunderson [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 64 (1995)], which states that $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_2)=\left\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \right\rfloor +1$. Moreover, we study the spectral extremal problem for $F_k$-free graphs with given number of edges. In particular, we show that the unique $m$-edge $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the join of $K_2$ with an independent set of $\frac{m-1}{2}$ vertices if $m\ge 8$, and the condition $m\ge 8$ is tight.

Spectral radius of graphs forbidden $C_7$ or $C_6^{\triangle}$
Let $C_k^{\triangle}$ be the graph obtained from a cycle $C_{k}$ by adding a new vertex connecting two adjacent vertices in $C_{k}$. In this note, we obtain the graph maximizing the spectral radius among all graphs with size $m$ and containing no subgraph isomorphic to $C_6^{\triangle}$. As a byproduct, we will show that if the spectral radius $λ(G)\ge1+\sqrt{m-2}$, then $G$ must contains all the cycles $C_i$ for $3\le i\le 7$ unless $G\cong K_3\nabla \left(\frac{m-3}{3}K_1\right)$.
