A memorial tribute: Adriano Garsia (1928--2024)
Adriano Mario Garsia was born in Tunis on August 20, 1928, to a Tunisian-Italian family. He lived on a farm there until the end of World War II, then moved to Rome. After finishing high school, he was sent to the United States to live with relatives in Woyming and eventually made his way to California, becoming a student of Charles Loewner at Stanford in the early 1950s. Following his Ph.D., Adriano held positions at MIT, the University of Minnesota, and Caltech before joining the nascent mathematics department at the University of California, San Diego, in 1966 where he spent the remainder of his career. He passed away in San Diego on October 6, 2024, at the age of 96.
Homogeneous spaces of semidirect products and finite Gelfand pairs
Let $K\leq H$ be two finite groups and let $C\leq A$ be two finite abelian groups, with $H$ acting on $A$ as a group of isomorphisms admitting $C$ as a $K$-invariant subgroup. We study the homogeneous space $X\coloneqq\left(H\ltimes A\right)/\left(K\ltimes C\right)$ and determine the decomposition of the permutation representation of $H\ltimes A$ acting on $X$. We then characterize when this is multiplicity-free, that is, when $\left(H\ltimes A,K\ltimes C\right)$ is a Gelfand pair. If this is the case, we explicitly calculate the corresponding spherical functions. From our general construction and related analysis, we recover Dunkl's results on the $q$-analog of the nonbinary Johnson scheme.

For every infinite sequence $ω=x_1,x_2,...$, with $x_i\in\{0,1\}$, we construct an infinite 4-regular graph $X_ω$. These graphs are precisely the Schreier graphs of the action of a certain self-similar group on the space $\{0,1\}^{\infty}$. We solve the isomorphism and local isomorphism problems for these graphs, and determine their automorphism groups. Finally, we prove that all graphs $X_ω$ have intermediate growth.

Given a connected locally finite simplicial graph $ G$ with vertex set $V$, the combinatorial Laplacian $Δ_G \colon \R^V \to \R^V$ is defined on the space of all real-valued functions on $V$. We prove that $Δ_G$ is surjective if $G$ is infinite.

We study the Tutte polynomial of two infinite families of finite graphs. These are the Schreier graphs associated with the action of two well-known self-similar groups acting on the binary rooted tree by automorphisms: the first Grigorchuk group of intermediate growth, and the iterated monodromy group of the complex polynomial $z^2-1$ known as the Basilica group. For both of them, we describe the Tutte polynomial and we compute several special evaluations of it, giving further information about the combinatorial structure of these graphs.
