Richardson tableaux and Motzkin paths
Richardson tableaux were introduced by Karp and Precup in their study of irreducible components of Springer fibers that are Richardson varieties. Guo gave an explicit bijection between Richardson tableaux and Motzkin paths through noncrossing involutions and the Robinson--Schensted (RS) algorithm. In this paper, we study Richardson tableaux of a fixed shape from the viewpoint of Motzkin paths. We introduce a shape algorithm, independent of the RS algorithm, that directly determines the shape of the corresponding Richardson tableau from a Motzkin path. Based on this algorithm, we construct a local bijection which keeps track of the major statistic and reproves combinatorially Karp and Precup's $q$-enumeration formula for Richardson tableaux of a given shape. We also prove a conjecture of Guo on the comajor generating function for Richardson tableaux with a prescribed number of odd columns.

Ideals defining components of two-row Springer fibers
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parameterized by nilpotent matrices. They are central objects of study in geometry representation theory. This paper focuses on two-row Springer fibers, those corresponding to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks. Irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers are in bijection with two-row standard Young tableaux and also with noncrossing matchings. Inspired by the combinatorial commutative algebra of matrix Schubert varieties, we define a polynomial ideal for each noncrossing matching and prove that these ideals define the corresponding components of the Springer fiber. Our proofs leverage geometric descriptions of Springer fibers established by Fung, Stroppel--Webster, Fresse, and Goldwasser--Nadeem--Sun--Tymoczko. Using these ideals to compute examples, we give two conjectural formulas for the cohomology class of each component of a two-row Springer fiber. We apply commutative algebra techniques to prove these conjectures for a specific family of two-row tableaux.

Anchored Dyck Paths
We answer a question of Simental by providing a combinatorial interpretation of a formula which generalizes rational Catalan numbers and which appears in the study of Springer fibers. We provide an interpretation in terms of binary necklaces as well as anchored Dyck paths.

Torus Equivariant Cohomology for the $Δ$-Springer Fiber
We define a torus $U \subset T = (\mathbb{C}^\times)^K$ which acts on the $Δ$-Springer varieties $Y_{n,λ,s}$ defined by Griffin-Levinson-Woo and give a Borel-style presentation for the equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_U(Y_{n,λ,s})$. Our presentation arises from the orbit harmonics deformation technique, and uses methods of Chou-Matsumura-Rhoades and Abe-Horiguchi.

Forest webs and pattern avoidance
In a recent preprint, Mike Cummings showed that the smooth components of suitably parametrized Springer fibers are in bijection with contracted, fully reduced Plücker degree-two $\mathfrak{sl}_r$-webs of standard type and that are forests. He showed these are enumerated by sequence A116731 in the OEIS, which is equinumerous with permutations avoiding the patterns {321,2143,3124}. Cummings posed the problem of strengthening this enumerative result by finding a bijection between these webs and a collection of pattern-avoiding permutations. Here we solve this problem, although notably not with the collection of patterns that Cummings had proposed. Rather, we give a bijection between this class of webs and permutations avoiding the patterns {132,4321,3214}.

Webs and smooth components of two column Springer fibers
Webs and Springer fibers are separately important objects in representation theory: webs give a diagrammatic calculus for tensor invariants of $\mathfrak{sl}_k$, and the cohomology group of Springer fibers can be used to construct the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. Fung's 1997 thesis gave the first evidence of a connection between $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ webs and Springer fibers, showing that webs naturally index and describe the components of certain "two row" Springer fibers. However, this case is known to be far from generic. This paper deepens this connection with a similar correspondence in the substantially more complicated "two column" case. In particular, and building on works of Fresse, Melnikov, and Sakas-Obeid, we use webs to give a clean characterization of the smooth components of two column rectangle Springer fibers and a simple description of the geometry of these smooth components. We also show that the Poincaré polynomial of the smooth components is invariant under the natural dihedral action on the corresponding webs.

Richardson tableaux and noncrossing partial matchings
Richardson tableaux are a remarkable subfamily of standard Young tableaux introduced by Karp and Precup in order to index the irreducible components of Springer fibers equal to Richardson varieties. We show that the set of insertion tableaux of noncrossing partial matchings on $\{1,2,,\ldots, n\}$ by applying the Robinson--Schensted algorithm coincides with the set of Richardson tableaux of size $n$. This leads to a natural one-to-one correspondence between the set of Richardson tableaux of size $n$ and the set of Motzkin paths with $n$ steps, in response to a problem proposed by Karp and Precup. As consequences, we recover some known and establish new properties for Richardson tableaux. Especially, we relate the $q$-counting of Richardson tableaux to $q$-Catalan numbers.

Richardson tableaux and Schubert positivity
We compute the Schubert cycle expansion of those irreducible components of Springer fibers equal to Richardson varieties. This generalizes work of Güemes in the case of a hook shape and answers a question of Karp-Precup.

Markov chains on Weyl groups from the geometry of the flag variety
This paper studies a basic Markov chain, the Burnside process, on the space of flags $G/B$ with $G = GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $B$ its upper triangular matrices. This gives rise to a shuffling: a Markov chain on the symmetric group realized via the Bruhat decomposition. Actually running and describing this Markov chain requires understanding Springer fibers and the Steinberg variety. The main results give a practical algorithm for all n and q and determine the limiting behavior of the chain when q is large. In describing this behavior, we find interesting connections to the combinatorics of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and to the geometry of orbital varieties. The construction and description is then carried over to finite Chevalley groups of arbitrary type, describing a new class of Markov chains on Weyl groups.

Bigraded Polynomials for the Cohomology of Wild Hitchin Systems
We introduce a bi-graded polynomial that encodes the cohomology groups of the wild Hitchin system of type~$A_{n-1}$, constructed using an irregular singularity (determined by an integer~$m$) and an arbitrary regular singularity~$f$. When the regular singularity is of the form~$f = [1, \ldots, 1]$, the bi-graded polynomial~$C_{m,n}(q,t)$ coincides with the bigraded rational parking function defined combinatorially, admitting a Schur expansion~$C_{m,n}(q,t) = \sum_λf_λ(q,t) s_λ(x)$. For general~$f$, the polynomial takes the form~$C^f_{m,n}(q,t) = \sum_λf_λ(q,t) K_{λf}$, where~$K_{λf}$ denotes the Kostka number. We conjecture that this bi-graded polynomial agrees with the one arising from the perverse filtration of the Hitchin fibration, or equivalently, from the weight filtration of the mixed Hodge structure from the character variety. We also give a description by using the geometry of affine Springer fiber.}
Notes on the cohomology of partial Hessenberg varieties
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of full flag varieties. This family contains well-known varieties such as Springer fibers, Peterson varieties, and permutohedral varieties. It was introduced by De Mari-Procesi-Shayman in 1992 and has been actively studied in this decade. In particular, unexpected relations to hyperplane arrangements and the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in graph theory have been discovered. Hessenberg varieties can be defined in partial flag varieties. In this paper, we study their cohomology by relating them to the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties in the full flag varieties.

Richardson tableaux and components of Springer fibers equal to Richardson varieties
Motivated by the study of Springer fibers and their totally nonnegative counterparts, we define a new subset of standard tableaux called Richardson tableaux. We characterize Richardson tableaux combinatorially using evacuation as well as in terms of a pair of associated reading words. We also characterize Richardson tableaux geometrically, proving that a tableau is Richardson if and only if the corresponding component of a Springer fiber is a Richardson variety, which in turn holds if and only if its positive part is a top-dimensional cell of the totally nonnegative Springer fiber studied by Lusztig (2021). We prove that each such component is smooth by leveraging a combinatorial description of the corresponding pair of reading words, generalizing a result of Graham-Zierau (2011). Another application is that the cohomology classes of these components can be computed in the Schubert basis using Schubert calculus. Finally, we show that the enumeration of Richardson tableaux is surprisingly elegant: the number of Richardson tableaux of fixed partition shape is a product of binomial coefficients, and the number of Richardson tableaux of size $n$ is the $n$th Motzkin number. As a result, we obtain a novel refinement for the Motzkin numbers, as well as a formula for the number of top-dimensional cells in the totally nonnegative Springer fiber.
Cell closures for two-row Springer fibers via noncrossing matchings
Springer fibers are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by nilpotent matrices that are important in geometric representation theory and whose geometry encodes deep combinatorics. Two-row Springer fibers, which correspond to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks, also arise in knot theory, in part because their components are indexed by noncrossing matchings. Springer fibers are paved by affines by intersection with appropriately-chosen Schubert cells. In the two-row case, we provide an elementary description of these Springer Schubert cells in terms of standard noncrossing matchings and describe closure relations explicitly. To do this, we define an operation called cutting arcs in a matching, which successively unnests arcs while ``remembering" the arc originally on top. We then prove that the boundary of the Springer Schubert cell corresponding to a matching consists of the affine subsets of cells corresponding to all ways of cutting arcs in that matching.
A geometric interpretation of the Delta Conjecture
We introduce a variety $Y_{n,k}$, which we call the \textit{affine $Δ$-Springer fiber}, generalizing the affine Springer fiber studied by Hikita, whose Borel-Moore homology has an $S_n$ action and a bigrading that corresponds to the Delta Conjecture symmetric function $\mathrm{rev}_q\,ωΔ'_{e_{k-1}}e_n$ under the Frobenius character map. We similarly provide a geometric interpretation for the Rational Shuffle Theorem in the integer slope case $(km,k)$. The variety $Y_{n,k}$ has a map to the affine Grassmannian whose fibers are the $Δ$-Springer fibers introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the third author. Part of our proof of our geometric realization relies on our previous work on a Schur skewing operator formula relating the Rational Shuffle Theorem to the Delta Conjecture.
Irreducible components of two-column $Δ$-Springer fibers
The $Δ$-Springer fibers $Y_{n,λ,s}$, introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the second author, generalize Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and give a geometric interpretation of the of the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics (at $t=0$). We prove that all irreducible components of the $Δ$-Springer fiber $Y_{n,n-1}=Y_{n,(1^{n-1}),n-1}$ are smooth. In fact, we prove that any intersection of irreducible components of $Y_{n,n-1}$ is a smooth Hessenberg variety which has the structure of an iterated Grassmannian fiber bundle. We then give a presentation of the singular cohomology ring of each irreducible component of $Y_{n,n-1}$ and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré polynomial of an arbitrary union of intersections of irreducible components in terms of arm and leg statistics on Dyck paths.

Hikita conjecture for classical Lie algebras
Let $G$ be $Sp_{2n}$, $SO_{2n}$ or $SO_{2n+1}$ and let $G^\vee$ be its Langlands dual group. Barbasch and Vogan based on earlier work of Lusztig and Spaltenstein, define a duality map $D$ that sends nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee} \subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$ to special nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_e\subset \mathfrak{g}$. In a work by Losev, Mason-Brown and Matvieievskyi, an upgraded version $\tilde{D}$ of this duality is considered, called the refined BVLS duality. $\tilde{D}(\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee})$ is a $G$-equivariant cover $\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e$ of $\mathbb{O}_e$. Let $S_{e^\vee}$ be the nilpotent Slodowy slice of the orbit $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee}$. The two varieties $X^\vee= S_{e^\vee}$ and $X=$ Spec$(\mathbb{C}[\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e])$ are expected to be symplectic dual to each other. In this context, a version of the Hikita conjecture predicts an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_{e^\vee}$ and the ring of regular functions on the scheme-theoretic fixed point $X^T$ for some torus $T$. This paper verifies the isomorphism for certain pairs $e$ and $e^\vee$. These cases are expected to cover almost all instances in which the Hikita conjecture holds when $e^\vee$ regular in a Levi $\mathfrak{l}^\vee\subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$. Our results in these cases follow from the relations of three different types of objects: generalized coinvariant algebras, equivariant cohomology rings, and functions on scheme-theoretic intersections. We also give evidence for the Hikita conjecture when $e^\vee$ is distinguished.

The action of component groups on irreducible components of Springer fibers
Let $G$ be a simple Lie group. Consider a nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$. Let $Z_G(e)$ be the centralizer of $e$ in $G$, and let $A_e:= Z_G(e)/Z_G(e)^{o}$ be its component group. Write $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ for the set of irreducible components of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. We have an action of $A_e$ on $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$. When $\mathfrak{g}$ is exceptional, we give an explicit description of $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ as an $A_e$-set. For $\mathfrak{g}$ of classical type, we describe the stabilizers for the $A_e$-action. With this description, we prove a conjecture of Lusztig and Sommers. These results suggest relations (first proposed by Lusztig) between Springer fibers and cells in Weyl groups.

Two-row Delta Springer varieties
Published in Algebr. Comb. 8(4) (2025), 925-953 • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry and topology of $Δ$-Springer varieties associated with two-row partitions. These varieties were introduced in recent work by Griffin-Levinson-Woo to give a geometric realization of a symmetric function appearing in the Delta conjecture by Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We provide an explicit and combinatorial description of the irreducible components of the two-row $Δ$-Springer variety and compare it to the ordinary two-row Springer fiber as well as Kato's exotic Springer fiber corresponding to a one-row bipartition. In addition to that, we extend the action of the symmetric group on the homology of the two-row $Δ$-Springer variety to an action of a degenerate affine Hecke algebra and relate this action to a $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$-tensor space.

Acyclic matchings on Bruhat intervals and applications to total positivity
The existence of acyclic complete matchings on the face poset of a regular CW complex implies that the underlying topological space of the CW complex is contractible by discrete Morse theory. In this paper, we construct explicitly acyclic complete matchings on any non-trivial Bruhat interval $[v,w]$ based on any reflection order on the Coxeter group $W$. We then apply this combinatorial result to regular CW complexes arising from the theory of total positivity. As an application, we show that the totally nonnegative Springer fibers are contractible. This verifies a conjecture of Lusztig. As another application, we show that the totally nonnegative fibers of the natural projection from full flag varieties to partial flag varieties are contractible. This leads to a much simplified proof of the regularity property on totally nonnegative partial flag varieties compared to the proofs by Galashin-Karp-Lam and in our earlier work.

Motivic Coh and Quot zeta functions of singular curves
We present a general and effective algebraic framework for enumerating finite-length quotients of a torsion-free sheaf of arbitrary rank (the Quot zeta function) and finite-length coherent sheaves (the Coh zeta function) over reduced singular curves. We prove that Quot zeta functions are motivically rational, using a novel parametrization and the geometry of affine Grassmannians, and that they satisfy an arbitrary-rank reflection principle, via harmonic analysis. We show that the a normalized high-rank limit of Quot zeta functions converges to the Coh zeta function. As a first application, we compute explicit formulas for these zeta functions for all $y^2 = x^n$ singularities, revealing a surprising and previously unknown connection to Rogers--Ramanujan type $q$-series. Further applications to affine Springer fibers and commuting varieties are also discussed.
