On the chromatic number and equilateral dimension of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the tropical norm
We study the tropical chromatic number of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $χ_{\mathrm{tr}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the minimal number of colors needed to color $\mathbb{R}^n$, so that no two points at tropical unit distance have the same color. It is the tropical analogue of the well-known Hadwiger-Nelson problem in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We have $\displaystyle \binom{n+1}{\lfloor (n+1)/2 \rfloor} \leq χ_{\mathrm{tr}}(\mathbb{R}^n) \leq 2^n$ for every $n$, where the lower bound comes from Sperner's antichain bound on a maximal equilateral set, as shown by Swanepoel. It is conjectured that $χ_{\mathrm{tr}}(\mathbb{R}^n) = 2^n$, which is known to be the case for the measurable chromatic number. By constructing a graph with 62 vertices and 577 edges we demonstrate that $χ_{\mathrm{tr}}(\mathbb{R}^3)=8$. We also construct a graph in $\mathbb{Z}^4$ with 37 vertices and 386 edges that is 11-colorable but not 10-colorable, which is above Sperner's lower bound of 10.
Topology and Euler characteristics of tropical varieties
We study Euler characteristics of tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties. We prove that every H-regular subvariety, locally modeled on tropicalizations of sufficiently well-behaved very affine varieties, has nonnegative signed Euler characteristic. This gives a tropical analogue of a theorem of Green-Lazarsfeld for subvarieties of complex abelian varieties. The main input is a local vanishing theorem for H-regular tropical fans, which also yields a Lefschetz-type theorem for affine H-regular tropical varieties. We further show that the signed Euler characteristic inequality fails for general tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties, and we construct a 3-dimensional tropical fan whose link is not homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of 2-spheres.
Tropical matroid Schubert varieties and the graded Möbius algebra
We introduce tropical matroid Schubert varieties, a tropical analogue of arrangement Schubert varieties associated with realisable matroids. We prove that the tropical cohomology ring of the tropical matroid Schubert variety associated to any matroid $M$ is isomorphic to the graded Möbius algebra $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$. This yields a geometric model for $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$, extending the geometric setting of arrangement Schubert varieties to arbitrary matroids, including non-realisable ones.
Tropical reductive groups and principal bundles on metric graphs
We propose an elementary tropical analogue of a reductive group that combines the datum of a Weyl group and the tropicalization of a fixed maximal torus. For the classical groups, as well as $G_2$, these tropical reductive groups admit descriptions as tropical matrix groups that resemble their classical counterparts. Employing this perspective, we introduce tropical principal bundles on metric graphs and study their explicit presentations as pushforwards of line bundles along covers with symmetries and extra data. Our main result identifies the essential skeleton of the moduli space of semistable principal bundles on a Tate curve with its tropical analogue.
Totally positive Toeplitz matrices: classical and modern
By a theorem of Edrei, an infinite, normalised totally nonnegative upper-triangular Toeplitz matrix is determined by a pair of nonnegative parameter sequences, the `Schoenberg parameters', where nonzero parameters correspond to the roots and poles of a naturally associated generating function. These totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices and their parameters also arise in the classification of characters of the infinite symmetric group by later work of Thoma. Moreover the Schoenberg parameters have an asymptotic interpretation in terms of irreducible representations of S_n and their Young diagrams by Vershik-Kerov. In this article we consider infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices as limits of finite ones, and we obtain two further asymptotic descriptions of the Schoenberg parameters that are now related to quantum cohomology of the flag variety as n goes to infinity. One is related to asymptotics of normalised quantum parameters, and the other to asymptotics of the Chern classes of the tautological line bundles. We also describe the asymptotics of (quantum) Schubert classes in terms of the Schoenberg parameters. Our limit formulas relate to and were motivated by a tropical analogue of this theory that we survey. In the tropical setting one finds an asymptotic relationship between the `tropical Schoenberg parameters' and the weight map from Lusztig's parametrisation of the canonical basis.
Tropical Donagi theorem
The tropical $n$-gonal construction was introduced in recent work by the first author and D.~Zakharov and structural results for $n = 2,3$ were established. In this article we explore the construction for $n = 4$ and prove a tropical analogue of Donagi's theorem which states that the tetragonal construction is a triality which preserves Prym varieties. This confirms the speculations in previous work and establishes new results on the non-injectivity of the tropical Prym-Torelli morphism. Finally, we demonstrate that the tropical $n$-gonal construction is poorly behaved under edge contractions, thus preventing any immediate moduli-theoretic perspective.
Tropical Poincaré bundle, Fourier-Mukai transform, and a generalized Poincaré formula
We construct a tropical analogue of the Poincaré bundle and prove a (cohomological) Fourier-Mukai transform for real tori with integral structures. We then prove a tropical analogue of Beauville's generalized Poincaré formula for polarized abelian varieties. Some consequences include a geometric Riemann-Roch theorem for tropical abelian varieties, as well as a tropical Poincaré-Prym formula which was recently conjectured by Röhrle and Zakharov.
Homological smoothness and Deligne resolution for tropical fans
We say that a tropical fan is homologically smooth if each of its open subsets verify tropical Poincare duality. A tropical homology manifold is a tropical variety that is locally modelled by open subsets of homologically smooth tropical fans.
We show that homological smoothness is a T-stable property in the category of tropical fans. This implies in particular that quasilinear fans are homologically smooth, and tropical varieties locally modelled by them are tropical homology manifolds. Previously, this was known only for locally matroidal tropical varieties.
In order to show the above results, we prove a tropical analogue of the Deligne weight spectral sequence for homologically smooth tropical fans. This allows to describe the cohomology of tropical modifications, and will be of importance in our companion work which develops a Hodge theory in the tropical setting.
Tropical Feichtner-Yuzvinsky and positivity criterion for fans
We prove that the Chow ring of any simplicial fan is isomorphic to the middle degree part of the tropical cohomology ring of its canonical compactification. Using this result, we prove a tropical analogue of Kleiman's criterion of ampleness for fans.
In the case of tropical fans that are homology manifolds, we obtain an isomorphism between the Chow ring of the fan and the entire tropical cohomology of the canonical compactification. When applied to matroids, this provides a new representation of the Chow ring of a matroid as the cohomology ring of a projective tropical manifold.
Tropical vector bundles and matroids
We introduce a notion of tropical vector bundle on a tropical toric variety which is a tropical analogue of a torus equivariant vector bundle on a toric variety. Alternatively it can be called a toric matroid bundle. We define equivariant $K$-theory and characteristic classes of these bundles. As a particular case, we show that any matroid comes with tautological tropical toric vector bundles over the permutahedral toric variety and the corresponding equivariant $K$-classes and Chern classes recover the tautological classes of matroids constructed in the recent work of Berger-Eur-Spink-Tseng. In analogy with toric vector bundles, we define sheaf of sections and Euler characteristic as well as positivity notions such as global generation, ampleness and nefness for tropical toric vector bundles. Moreover, we prove a vanishing of higher cohomologies result. Finally, we study the splitting of our tropical toric vector bundles and, in particular, an analogue of Grothendieck's theorem on splitting of vector bundles on projective line.
The Nullstellensatz and Positivstellensatz for Sparse Tropical Polynomial Systems

Grigoriev and Podolskii (2018) have established a tropical analogue of the effective Nullstellensatz, showing that a system of tropical polynomial equations is solvable if and only if a linearized system obtained from a truncated Macaulay matrix is solvable. They provided an upper bound of the minimal admissible truncation degree, as a function of the degrees of the tropical polynomials. We establish a tropical Nullstellensatz adapted to {\em sparse} tropical polynomial systems. Our approach is inspired by a construction of Canny-Emiris (1993), refined by Sturmfels (1994). This leads to an improved bound of the truncation degree, which coincides with the classical Macaulay degree in the case of $n+1$ equations in $n$ unknowns. We also establish a tropical Positivstellensatz, allowing one to decide the inclusion of tropical basic semialgebraic sets. This allows one to reduce decision problems for tropical semi-algebraic sets to the solution of systems of tropical linear equalities and inequalities.
On the Semigroup of Graph Gonality Sequences
The $r$th gonality of a graph is the smallest degree of a divisor on the graph with rank $r$. The gonality sequence of a graph is a tropical analogue of the gonality sequence of an algebraic curve. We show that the set of truncated gonality sequences of graphs forms a semigroup under addition. Using this, we study which triples $(x,y,z)$ can be the first 3 terms of a graph gonality sequence. We show that nearly every such triple with $z \geq \frac{3}{2}x+2$ is the first three terms of a graph gonality sequence, and also exhibit triples where the ratio $\frac{z}{x}$ is an arbitrary rational number between 1 and 3. In the final section, we study algebraic curves whose $r$th and $(r+1)$st gonality differ by 1, and posit several questions about graphs with this property.
The tropical $n$-gonal construction
We give a purely tropical analogue of Donagi's $n$-gonal construction and investigate its combinatorial properties. The input of the construction is a harmonic double cover of an $n$-gonal tropical curve. For $n = 2$ and a dilated double cover, the output is a tower of the same type, and we show that the Prym varieties of the two double covers are dual tropical abelian varieties. For $n=3$ and a free double cover, the output is a tetragonal tropical curve with dilation profile nowhere $(2,2)$ or $(4)$, and we show that the construction can be reversed. Furthermore, the Prym variety of the double cover and the Jacobian of the tetragonal curve are isomorphic as principally polarized tropical abelian varieties. Our main tool is tropical homology theory, and our proofs closely follow the algebraic versions.
Geometry of higher rank valuations
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k.
We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions.
We consider moreover a refined notion of tropicalization in which we remember the initial terms of power series on each cone of a dual complex, and prove a tropical analogue of the weak approximation theorem in number theory by showing that any compatible collection of initial terms on cones of a dual cone complex is the refined tropicalization of a rational function in the function field of the variety.
Endowing the value group R^k with its Euclidean topology, we study then a natural topology on spaces of higher rank valuations that we call the tropical topology. By using the approximation theorem we provide an explicit description of the tropical topology on tangent cones of dual cone complexes.
Finally, we show that tangent cones of dual complexes provide a notion of skeleton in higher rank non-archimedean geometry. That is, generalizing the picture in rank one to higher rank, we construct retraction maps to tangent cones of dual cone complexes, and use them to obtain limit formulae in which we reconstruct higher rank non-archimedian spaces with their tropical topology as the projective limit of their higher rank skeleta.
We conjecture that these higher rank skeleta provide appropriate bases for the study of variations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

We prove a tropical analogue of the theorem of Hurwitz: a leafless metric graph of genus $g \ge 2$ has at most $12$ automorphisms when $g = 2$; $2^g g!$ automorphisms when $g \ge 3$. These inequalities are optimal; for each genus, we give all metric graphs which have the maximum numbers of automorphisms. The proof is written in terms of graph theory.

We study two possible tropical analogues of Weierstrass semigroups on graphs, called rank and functional Weierstrass sets. We prove that on simple graphs, the first is contained in the second. We completely characterize the subsets of N arising as a functional Weierstrass set of some graph. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a subset of N to be the rank Weierstrass set of some graph, allowing us to construct examples of rank Weierstrass sets that are not semigroups.

We launch the study of the tropicalization of the symplectic Grassmannian, that is, the space of all linear subspaces that are isotropic with respect to a fixed symplectic form. We formulate tropical analogues of several equivalent characterizations of the symplectic Grassmannian and determine all implications between them. In the process, we show that the Plücker and symplectic relations form a tropical basis if and only if the rank is at most 2. We provide plenty of examples that show that several features of the symplectic Grassmannian do not hold after tropicalizing. We show exactly when do conormal fans of matroids satisfy these characterizations, as well as doing the same for a non-constant coefficient generalization. Finally, we propose several directions to extend the study of the tropical symplectic Grassmannian.
Tropical Clemens-Schmid sequence and existence of tropical cycles with a given cohomology class
This is a sequel to our work in tropical Hodge theory. Our aim here is to prove a tropical analogue of the Clemens-Schmid exact sequence in asymptotic Hodge theory. As an application of this result, we prove the tropical Hodge conjecture for smooth projective tropical varieties which are rationally triangulable. This provides a partial answer to a question of Kontsevich who suggested the validity of the tropical Hodge conjecture could be used as a test for the validity of the Hodge conjecture.

Flag matroids are combinatorial abstractions of flags of linear subspaces, just as matroids are of linear subspaces. We introduce the flag Dressian as a tropical analogue of the partial flag variety, and prove a correspondence between: (a) points on the flag Dressian, (b) valuated flag matroids, (c) flags of projective tropical linear spaces, and (d) coherent flag matroidal subdivisions. We introduce and characterize projective tropical linear spaces, which serve as a fundamental tool in our proof. We apply the correspondence to prove that all valuated flag matroids on ground set up to size 5 are realizable, and give an example where this fails for a flag matroid on 6 elements.
Gonality sequences of graphs

To any graph we associate a sequence of integers called the gonality sequence of the graph, consisting of the minimum degrees of divisors of increasing rank on the graph. This is a tropical analogue of the gonality sequence of an algebraic curve. We study gonality sequences for graphs of low genus, proving that for genus up to $5$, the gonality sequence is determined by the genus and the first gonality. We then prove that any reasonable pair of first two gonalities is achieved by some graph. We also develop a modified version of Dhar's burning algorithm more suited for studying higher gonalities.
