Working with Tropical Meromorphic Functions of One Variable
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we survey and study definitions and properties of tropical polynomials, tropical rational functions and in general, tropical meromorphic functions, emphasizing practical techniques that can really carry out computations. For instance, we introduce maximally represented tropical polynomials and tropical polynomials in compact forms to quickly find roots of given tropical polynomials. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of tropical theorems for meromorphic functions with prescribed roots and poles. Moreover, we explain the relations between classical and tropical meromorphic functions. Different definitions and applications of tropical meromorphic functions are discussed. Finally, we point out the properties of tropical meromorphic functions are very similar to complex ones and prove some tropical analogues of theorems in complex analysis.
Tropical polar cones, hypergraph transversals, and mean payoff games
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 435, Issue 7, 1 October 2011, Pages 1549-1574 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss the tropical analogues of several basic questions of convex duality. In particular, the polar of a tropical polyhedral cone represents the set of linear inequalities that its elements satisfy. We characterize the extreme rays of the polar in terms of certain minimal set covers which may be thought of as weighted generalizations of minimal transversals in hypergraphs. We also give a tropical analogue of Farkas lemma, which allows one to check whether a linear inequality is implied by a finite family of linear inequalities. Here, the certificate is a strategy of a mean payoff game. We discuss examples, showing that the number of extreme rays of the polar of the tropical cyclic polyhedral cone is polynomially bounded, and that there is no unique minimal system of inequalities defining a given tropical polyhedral cone.

Bethe Ansatz, Inverse Scattering Transform and Tropical Riemann Theta Function in a Periodic Soliton Cellular Automaton for A^{(1)}_n
Published in SIGMA 6 (2010), 013, 52 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables are constructed representing the amplitudes and phases of solitons. By the direct and inverse scattering maps, separation of variables into solitons is achieved and nonlinear dynamics is transformed into a straight motion on a tropical analogue of the Jacobi variety. We decompose the level set into connected components under the commuting family of time evolutions and identify each of them with the set of integer points on a torus. The weight multiplicity formula derived from the q=0 Bethe equation acquires an elegant interpretation as the volume of the phase space expressed by the size and multiplicity of these tori. The dynamical period is determined as an explicit arithmetical function of the n-tuple of Young diagrams specifying the level set. The inverse map, i.e., tropical Jacobi inversion is expressed in terms of a tropical Riemann theta function associated with the Bethe ansatz data. As an application, time average of some local variable is calculated.
Computing the vertices of tropical polyhedra using directed hypergraphs

We establish a characterization of the vertices of a tropical polyhedron defined as the intersection of finitely many half-spaces. We show that a point is a vertex if, and only if, a directed hypergraph, constructed from the subdifferentials of the active constraints at this point, admits a unique strongly connected component that is maximal with respect to the reachability relation (all the other strongly connected components have access to it). This property can be checked in almost linear-time. This allows us to develop a tropical analogue of the classical double description method, which computes a minimal internal representation (in terms of vertices) of a polyhedron defined externally (by half-spaces or hyperplanes). We provide theoretical worst case complexity bounds and report extensive experimental tests performed using the library TPLib, showing that this method outperforms the other existing approaches.
On bases of tropical Plücker functions

We consider functions $f:B\to\Rset$ that obey tropical analogs of classical Plücker relations on minors of a matrix. The most general set $B$ that we deal with in this paper is of the form $\{x\in \Zset^n\colon 0\le x\le a, m\le x_1+...+x_n\le m'\}$ (a rectangular integer box ``truncated from below and above''). We construct a basis for the set $\Tscr$ of tropical Plücker functions on $B$, a subset $\Bscr\subseteq B$ such that the restriction map $\Tscr\to\Rset^\Bscr$ is bijective. Also we characterize, in terms of the restriction to the basis, the classes of submodular, so-called skew-submodular, and discrete concave functions in $\Tscr$, discuss a tropical analogue of the Laurentness property, and present other results.

Tropicalization of group representations

In this paper we give an interpretation to the boundary points of the compactification of the parameter space of convex projective structures on an n-manifold M. These spaces are closed semi-algebraic subsets of the variety of characters of representations of the fundamental group of M in SL_{n+1}(R). The boundary was constructed as the tropicalization of this semi-algebraic set. Here we show that the geometric interpretation for the points of the boundary can be constructed searching for a tropical analogue to an action of the group on a projective space. To do this we need to construct a tropical projective space with many invertible projective maps. We achieve this using a generalization of the Bruhat-Tits buildings for SL_{n+1} to non-archimedean fields with real surjective valuation. In the case n = 1 these objects are the real trees used by Morgan and Shalen to describe the boundary points for the Teichmuller spaces. In the general case they are contractible metric spaces with a structure of tropical projective spaces.

Tropical Linear Spaces

We define tropical analogues of the notions of linear space and Plucker coordinate and study their combinatorics. We introduce tropical analogues of intersection and dualization and define a tropical linear space built by repeated dualization and transverse intersection to be constructible. Our main result that all constructible tropical linear spaces have the same f-vector and are ``series-parallel''. We conjecture that this f-vector is maximal for all tropical linear spaces with equality precisely for the series-parallel tropical linear spaces. We present many partial results towards this conjecture. In addition we relate tropical linear spaces to linear spaces defined over power series fields and give many examples and counter-examples illustrating aspects of this relationship. We describe a family of particularly nice series-parallel linear spaces, which we term tree spaces, that realize the conjectured maximal f-vector and are constructed in a manner similar to the cyclic polytopes.
