Tropical Methods for Counting Plane Curves -- Complex, Real and Quadratically Enriched
Since the first famous correspondence theorem by Mikhalkin appeared in 2005, tropical geometry has allowed a parallel treatment of real and complex counting problems. A prime example are the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the plane which count rational plane curves of degree d satisfying point conditions and their real counterpart, the Welschinger invariants, which both can be determined using tropical methods. Remarkably, the tropical computation of the two types of invariants works entirely in parallel. Recently, quadratically enriched enumerative geometry enables us to combine such real and complex counts under one roof, providing a simultaneous approach which can also be used for counts over other fields. Tropical geometry is a successful tool for the study and computation of such quadratically enriched enumerative invariants, too. In this survey, we provide an overview of tropical methods for plane curve counting problems over the real and complex numbers, and the new quadratically enriched counts.

Tropical Donagi theorem
The tropical $n$-gonal construction was introduced in recent work by the first author and D.~Zakharov and structural results for $n = 2,3$ were established. In this article we explore the construction for $n = 4$ and prove a tropical analogue of Donagi's theorem which states that the tetragonal construction is a triality which preserves Prym varieties. This confirms the speculations in previous work and establishes new results on the non-injectivity of the tropical Prym-Torelli morphism. Finally, we demonstrate that the tropical $n$-gonal construction is poorly behaved under edge contractions, thus preventing any immediate moduli-theoretic perspective.
Quadratically Enriched Plane Curve Counting via Tropical Geometry
We prove that the quadratically enriched count of rational curves in a smooth toric del Pezzo surface passing through $k$-rational points and pairs of conjugate points in quadratic field extensions $k\subset k(\sqrt{d_i})$ can be determined by counting certain tropical stable maps through vertically stretched point conditions with a suitable multiplicity. Building on the floor diagram technique in tropical geometry, we provide an algorithm to compute these numbers. Our tropical algorithm computes not only these new quadratically enriched enumerative invariants, but simultaneously also the complex Gromov-Witten invariant, the real Welschinger invariant counting curves satisfying real point conditions only, the real Welschinger invariant of curves satisfying pairs of complex conjugate and real point conditions, and the quadratically enriched count of curves satisfying $k$-rational point conditions.
On the topology of the moduli of tropical unramified p-covers
We study the topology of the moduli space of unramified $\mathbb{Z}/p$-covers of tropical curves of genus $g \geq 2$, where $p$ is a prime number. We use recent techniques by Chan--Galatius--Payne to identify contractible subcomplexes of the moduli space. We then use this contractibility result to show that this moduli space is simply connected. In the case of genus 2, we determine the homotopy type of this moduli space for all primes $p$. This work is motivated by prospective applications to the top-weight cohomology of the space of prime cyclic étale covers of smooth algebraic curves.

Logarithmic concavity of bimatroids
A bimatroid is a matroid-like generalization of the collection of regular minors of a matrix. In this article, we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to study the logarithmic concavity of natural sequences associated to bimatroids. Bimatroids can be used to characterize morphisms of matroids and this observation (originally due to Kung) allows us to prove a weak version of logarithmic concavity of the number of bases of a morphism of matroids. This is weaker than the original result by Eur and Huh; it nevertheless provides us with a new perspective on Mason's log-concavity conjecture for independent sets of matroids. We finally show that for realizable bimatroids, the regular minor polynomial is a volume polynomial. Applied to morphisms of matroids, this shows that the weak basis generating polynomial of a morphism is a volume polynomial; this confirms a conjecture of Eur--Huh for morphisms of nullity $\leq 1$ and gives an algebro-geometric explanation for Mason's log-concavity conjecture in the realizable case.

A matroidal perspective on the tropical Prym variety
We associate a matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ to a harmonic double cover $π:\widetildeΓ\to Γ$ of metric graphs. The matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ is a geometric interpretation of Zaslavsky's signed graphic matroid. We show that the principalization $\mathrm{Prym}_p(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ of the tropical Prym variety of the double cover can be reconstructed from $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$, equipped with certain additional decorations. We describe the simplification of the matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ and show that the Prym variety does not change under simplification.
Arithmetic Counts of Tropical Plane Curves and Their Properties
Recently, the first and third author proved a correspondence theorem which recovers the Levine-Welschinger invariants of toric del Pezzo surfaces as a count of tropical curves weighted with arithmetic multiplicities. In this paper, we study properties of the arithmetic count of plane tropical curves satisfying point conditions. We prove that this count is independent of the configuration of point conditions. Moreover, a Caporaso-Harris formula for the arithmetic count of plane tropical curves is obtained by moving one point to the very left. Repeating this process until all point conditions are stretched, we obtain an enriched count of floor diagrams which coincides with the tropical count. Finally, we prove polynomiality properties for the arithmetic counts using floor diagrams.

The tropical $n$-gonal construction
We give a purely tropical analogue of Donagi's $n$-gonal construction and investigate its combinatorial properties. The input of the construction is a harmonic double cover of an $n$-gonal tropical curve. For $n = 2$ and a dilated double cover, the output is a tower of the same type, and we show that the Prym varieties of the two double covers are dual tropical abelian varieties. For $n=3$ and a free double cover, the output is a tetragonal tropical curve with dilation profile nowhere $(2,2)$ or $(4)$, and we show that the construction can be reversed. Furthermore, the Prym variety of the double cover and the Jacobian of the tetragonal curve are isomorphic as principally polarized tropical abelian varieties. Our main tool is tropical homology theory, and our proofs closely follow the algebraic versions.
