Representability of Flag Matroids
We provide a new axiom system for flag matroids, characterize representability of uniform flag matroids, and give forbidden minor characterizations of full flag matroids that are representable over $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$.

Matroids over tropical extensions of tracts
A tract $F$ is an algebraic structure where multiplication is defined but addition is only partially defined. They were introduced by Baker and Bowler as a unified framework to study generalisations of matroids, including oriented and valuated matroids. A tropical extension $F[Γ]$ is a tract obtained by extending a tract $F$ by an ordered abelian group $Γ$. Key examples include the tropical hyperfield as a tropical extension of the Krasner hyperfield, and the signed tropical hyperfield as a tropical extension of the sign hyperfield. We study matroids over tropical extensions of tracts, including valuated matroids and oriented valuated matroids. We generalise the correspondence between valuated matroids and their initial matroids, showing that $M$ is an $F[Γ]$-matroid if and only if every initial matroid $M^u$ is an $F$-matroid. We also show analogous results for flag matroids and positroids over tropical extensions, utilising the circuit and covector descriptions we derive for $F[Γ]$-matroids. We conclude by studying images of linear spaces in enriched valuations, valuation maps enriched with additional data. These give rise to enriched tropical linear spaces, including signed tropical linear spaces as a key examples. As an application of our results, we prove a structure theorem for enriched tropical linear spaces, generalising the characterisation of projective tropical linear spaces of Brandt-Eur-Zhang.

Matroidal polynomials, their singularities, and applications to Feynman diagrams
Given a matroid or flag of matroids we introduce several broad classes of polynomials satisfying Deletion-Contraction identities, and study their singularities. There are three main families of polynomials captured by our approach: matroidal polynomials on a matroid (including matroid basis polynomials, configuration polynomials, Tutte polynomials); flag matroidal polynomials on a flag matroid; and Feynman integrands. The last class includes under general kinematics the inhomogeneous Feynman diagram polynomials which naturally arise in the Lee--Pomeransky form of the Feynman integral attached to a Feynman diagram. Assuming that the primary underlying matroid is connected and of positive rank (and in the flag case, has rank at least two), we show: a) in positive characteristic, homogeneous matroidal polynomials are strongly $F$-regular; b) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, the associated jet schemes of (flag) matroidal polynomials as well as those of Feynman integrands are irreducible. Consequently, all these polynomials have rational singularities (or are smooth).

Realizability of matroid quotients
We characterize the realizability of a quotient of matroids, over an infinite field $K$, in terms of the realizability over $K$ of a single matroid associated to it, called the Higgs major. This result extends to realizability of flag matroids. Further, we provide some applications to the relative realizability problem for Bergman fans in tropical geometry.

Mirković-Vilonen Polytopes from Combinatorics
Mirković-Vilonen (MV) polytopes are a class of generalized permutahedra originating from geometric representation theory. In this paper we study MV polytopes coming from matroid polytopes, flag matroid polytopes, Bruhat interval polytopes, and Schubitopes. We give classifications and combinatorial conditions for when these polytopes are MV polytopes. We also describe how the crystal structure on MV polytopes manifests combinatorially in these situations. As a special case, we show that the Newton polytopes of Schubert polynomials and key polynomials are MV polytopes.
Polyhedral and Tropical Geometry of Flag Positroids

A flag positroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}:=(r_1<\dots <r_k)$ on $[n]$ is a flag matroid that can be realized by a real $r_k \times n$ matrix $A$ such that the $r_i \times r_i$ minors of $A$ involving rows $1,2,\dots,r_i$ are nonnegative for all $1\leq i \leq k$. In this paper we explore the polyhedral and tropical geometry of flag positroids, particularly when $\boldsymbol{r}:=(a, a+1,\dots,b)$ is a sequence of consecutive numbers. In this case we show that the nonnegative tropical flag variety TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ equals the nonnegative flag Dressian FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$, and that the points $\boldsymbolμ = (μ_a,\ldots, μ_b)$ of TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0} =$ FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ give rise to coherent subdivisions of the flag positroid polytope $P(\underline{\boldsymbolμ})$ into flag positroid polytopes. Our results have applications to Bruhat interval polytopes: for example, we show that a complete flag matroid polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope if and only if its $(\leq 2)$-dimensional faces are Bruhat interval polytopes. Our results also have applications to realizability questions. We define a positively oriented flag matroid to be a sequence of positively oriented matroids $(χ_1,\dots,χ_k)$ which is also an oriented flag matroid. We then prove that every positively oriented flag matroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}=(a,a+1,\dots,b)$ is realizable.

Underlying Flag Polymatroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.

Initial degenerations of flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the initial degenerations of the flag variety admit closed immersions into finite inverse limits of flag matroid strata, where the diagrams are derived from matroidal subdivisions of a suitable flag matroid polytope. As an application, we prove that the initial degenerations of $\operatorname{F\ell}^{\circ}(n)$ -- the open subvariety of the complete flag variety $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ consisting of flags in general position -- are smooth and irreducible when $n\leq 4$. We also study the Chow quotient of $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ by the diagonal torus of $\operatorname{PGL}(n)$, and show that, for $n=4$, this is a log crepant resolution of its log canonical model.

Flag matroids with coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is a direct generalization of Baker-Bowler theory to flag matroids, including its moduli interpretation as developed by Baker and the second author for matroids. More explicitly, we extend the notion of flag matroids to flag matroids over any tract, provide cryptomorphic descriptions in terms of basis axioms (Grassmann-Plücker functions), circuit/vector axioms and dual pairs, including additional characterizations in the case of perfect tracts. We establish duality of flag matroids and construct minors. Based on the theory of ordered blue schemes, we introduce flag matroid bundles and construct their moduli space, which leads to algebro-geometric descriptions of duality and minors. Taking rational points recovers flag varieties in several geometric contexts: over (topological) fields, in tropical geometry, and as a generalization of the MacPhersonian.

Lattice path matroids and quotients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize the quotients among lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of their diagrams. This characterization allows us to show that ordering LPMs by quotients yields a graded poset, whose rank polynomial has the Narayana numbers as coefficients. Furthermore, we study full lattice path flag matroids and show that -- contrary to arbitrary positroid flag matroids -- they correspond to points in the nonnegative flag variety. At the basis of this result lies an identification of certain intervals of the strong Bruhat order with lattice path flag matroids. A recent conjecture of Mcalmon, Oh, and Xiang states a characterization of quotients of positroids. We use our results to prove this conjecture in the case of LPMs.
Generalized permutahedra and positive flag Dressians
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study valuated matroids, their tropical incidence relations, flag matroids and total positivity. This leads to a characterization of permutahedral subdivisions, namely subdivisions of regular permutahedra into generalized permutahedra. Further, we get a characterization of those subdivisions arising from positive valuated flag matroids.

Tropical flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Flag matroids are combinatorial abstractions of flags of linear subspaces, just as matroids are of linear subspaces. We introduce the flag Dressian as a tropical analogue of the partial flag variety, and prove a correspondence between: (a) points on the flag Dressian, (b) valuated flag matroids, (c) flags of projective tropical linear spaces, and (d) coherent flag matroidal subdivisions. We introduce and characterize projective tropical linear spaces, which serve as a fundamental tool in our proof. We apply the correspondence to prove that all valuated flag matroids on ground set up to size 5 are realizable, and give an example where this fails for a flag matroid on 6 elements.

Compression of M${}^\natural$-convex Functions -- Flag Matroids and Valuated Permutohedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
Murota (1998) and Murota and Shioura (1999) introduced concepts of M-convex function and M${}^\natural$-convex function as discrete convex functions, which are generalizations of valuated matroids due to Dress and Wenzel (1992). In the present paper we consider a new operation defined by a convolution of sections of an M${}^\natural$-convex function that transforms the given M${}^\natural$-convex function to an M-convex function, which we call a compression of an M${}^\natural$-convex function. For the class of valuated generalized matroids, which are special M${}^\natural$-convex functions, the compression induces a valuated permutohedron together with a decomposition of the valuated generalized matroid into flag-matroid strips, each corresponding to a maximal linearity domain of the induced valuated permutohedron. We examine the details of the structure of flag-matroid strips and the induced valuated permutohedron by means of discrete convex analysis of Murota.
Quotients of uniform positroids

Flag matroids are a rich family of Coxeter matroids that can be characterized using pairs of matroids that form a quotient. We consider a class of matroids called positroids, introduced by Postnikov, and utilize their combinatorial representations to explore characterizations of flag positroids. Given a uniform positroid, we give a purely combinatorial characterization of a family of positroids that form quotients with it. We state this in terms of their associated decorated permutations. In proving our characterization we also fully describe the circuits of this family.
Flag matroids: algebra and geometry
Published • View Publication • BIB
Matroids are ubiquitous in modern combinatorics. As discovered by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova there is a beautiful connection between matroid theory and the geometry of Grassmannians: realizable matroids correspond to torus orbits in Grassmannians. Further, as observed by Fink and Speyer general matroids correspond to classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. This yields in particular a geometric description of the Tutte polynomial. In this review we describe all these constructions in detail, and moreover we generalise some of them to polymatroids. More precisely, we study the class of flag matroids and their relations to flag varieties. In this way, we obtain an analogue of the Tutte polynomial for flag matroids.

Matroid polytopes and their volumes
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 43-4 (2010) 841-854 • View Publication • BIB
We express the matroid polytope $P_M$ of a matroid $M$ as a signed Minkowski sum of simplices, and obtain a formula for the volume of $P_M$. This gives a combinatorial expression for the degree of an arbitrary torus orbit closure in the Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}$. We then derive analogous results for the independent set polytope and the associated flag matroid polytope of $M$. Our proofs are based on a natural extension of Postnikov's theory of generalized permutohedra.

A natural family of flag matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A flag matroid can be viewed as a chain of matroids linked by quotients. Flag matroids, of which relatively few interesting families have previously been known, are a particular class of Coxeter matroids. In this paper we give a family of flag matroids arising from an enumeration problem that is a generalization of the tennis ball problem. These flag matroids can also be defined in terms of lattice paths and they provide a generalization of the lattice path matroids of [Bonin et al., JCTA 104 (2003)].
Lagrangian Pairs and Lagrangian Orthogonal Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Represented Coxeter matroids of types $C_n$ and $D_n$, that is, symplectic and orthogonal matroids arising from totally isotropic subspaces of symplectic or (even-dimensional) orthogonal spaces, may also be represented in buildings of type $C_n$ and $D_n$, respectively. Indeed, the particular buildings involved are those arising from the flags or oriflammes, respectively, of totally isotropic subspaces. There are also buildings of type $B_n$ arising from flags of totally isotropic subspaces in odd-dimensional orthogonal space. Coxeter matroids of type $B_n$ are the same as those of type $C_n$ (since they depend only upon the reflection group, not the root system). However, buildings of type $B_n$ are distinct from those of the other types. The matroids representable in odd dimensional orthogonal space (and therefore in the building of type $B_n$) turn out to be a special case of symplectic (flag) matroids, those whose top component, or Lagrangian matroid, is a union of two Lagrangian orthogonal matroids. These two matroids are called a Lagrangian pair, and they are the combinatorial manifestation of the ``fork'' at the top of an oriflamme (or of the fork at the end of the Coxeter diagram of $D_n$). Here we give a number of equivalent characterizations of Lagrangian pairs, and prove some rather strong properties of them.
