A Riordan array family for some integrable lattice models
We study a family of Riordan arrays whose square symmetrizations lead to the Robbins numbers as well as numbers associated to the $20$ vertex model. We provide closed-form expressions for the elements of these arrays, and also give a canonical Catalan factorization for them. We describe a related family of Riordan arrays whose symmetrizations also lead to the same integer sequences.
Periodic Column Partial Sums in the Riordan Array of a Polynomial
When $p(t)$ is a polynomial of degree $d$, $k$-th column of the Riordan array $\bigl(1/(1 - t^{d+1}), tp(t)\bigr)$ is an eventually periodic sequence with the repeating part beginning at the $1 + (k-1)(d+1)$-st term. The pre-periodic terms add up to the $(k-1)(d+1)$-st partial sum of the corresponding formal power series, and thus the Riordan array of $p(t)$ generates a sequence of column partial sums. We classify linear and quadratic polynomials, and present a particular family of polynomials of higher degrees, for which such sequences of column partial sums are eventually periodic.
Total Positivity of Quasi-Riordan Arrays
In this paper the total positivity of quasi-Riordan arrays is investigated with use of the sequence characterization of quasi-Riordan arrays. Due to the correlation between quasi-Riordan arrays and Riordan arrays, this study is an in-depth discussion of the total positivity of Riordan arrays.
Total Positivity of Almost-Riordan Arrays
In this paper we study the total positivity of almost-Riordan arrays $(d(t)|\, g(t), f(t))$ and establish its necessary conditions and sufficient conditions, particularly, for some well used formal power series $d(t)$. We present a semidirect product of an almost-array and use it to transfer a total positivity problem for an almost-Riordan array to the total positivity problem for a quasi-Riordan array. We find the sequence characterization of total positivity of the almost-Riordan arrays. The production matrix $J$ of an almost-Riordan array $(d|\, g,f)$ is presented so that $J$ is totally positive implies the total positivity of both the almost-Riordan array $(d|\, g,f)$ and the Riordan array $(g,f)$. We also present a counterexample to illustrate that this sufficient condition is not necessary. If the production matrix $J$ is tridiagonal, then the expressions of its principal minors are given. By using expressions, we find a sufficient and necessary condition of the total positivity of almost-Riordan arrays with tridiagonal production matrices. A numerous examples are given to demonstrate our results.
Generating functions of lattice paths
We recall the main types of lattice paths, which are sequences in the lattice of integer coordinates points in the plane. We start with the fundamental central lattice paths and Dyck paths and proceed in elementary terms through recently introduced lattice paths.
For every type, we consider the respective generating function. In fact, through our approach (via Riordan arrays), various entries of the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences are unified, clarified, and simplified.
Lattice paths and branched continued fractions. III. Generalizations of the Laguerre, rook and Lah polynomials
We introduce a triangular array $\widehat{\sf L}^{(α)}$ of 5-variable homogeneous polynomials that enumerate Laguerre digraphs (digraphs in which each vertex has out-degree 0 or 1 and in-degree 0 or 1) with separate weights for peaks, valleys, double ascents, double descents, and loops. These polynomials generalize the classical Laguerre polynomials as well as the rook and Lah polynomials. We show that this triangular array is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is Hankel-totally positive, under suitable restrictions on the values given to the indeterminates. This implies, in particular, the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the monic unsigned univariate Laguerre polyomials. Our proof uses the method of production matrices as applied to exponential Riordan arrays. Our main technical lemma concerns the total positivity of a large class of quadridiagonal production matrices; it generalizes the tridiagonal comparison theorem. In some cases these polynomials are given by a branched continued fraction. Our constructions are motivated in part by recurrences for the multiple orthogonal polynomials associated to weights based on modified Bessel functions of the first kind $I_α$.
Total positivity from a kind of lattice paths
Total positivity of matrices is deeply studied and plays an important role in various branches of mathematics. The main purpose of this paper is to study total positivity of a matrix $M=[M_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ generated by the weighted lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ from the origin $(0,0)$ to the point $(k,n)$ consisting of types of steps: $(0,1)$ and $(1,t+i)$ for $0\leq i\leq \ell$, where each step $(0,1)$ from height~$n-1$ gets the weight~$b_n(\textbf{y})$ and each step $(1,t+i)$ from height~$n-t-i$ gets the weight $a_n^{(i)}(\textbf{x})$.
Using an algebraic method, we prove that the $\textbf{x}$-total positivity of the weight matrix $[a_i^{(i-j)}(\textbf{x})]_{i,j}$ implies that of $M$. Furthermore, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma, we obtain that both $M$ and the Toeplitz matrix of each row sequence of $M$ with $t\geq1$ are $\textbf{x}$-totally positive under the following three cases respectively: (1) $\ell=1$, (2) $\ell=2$ and restrictions for $a_n^{(i)}$, (3) general $\ell$ and both $a^{(i)}_n$ and $b_n$ are independent of $n$. In addition, for the case (3), we show that the matrix $M$ is a Riordan array, present its explicit formula and prove total positivity of the Toeplitz matrix of the each column of $M$. In particular, from the results for Toeplitz-total positivity, we also obtain the Pólya frequency and log-concavity of the corresponding sequence.
Finally, as applications, we in a unified manner establish total positivity and the Toeplitz-total positivity for many well-known combinatorial triangles, including the Pascal triangle, the Pascal square, the Delannoy triangle, the Delannoy square, the signless Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Legendre-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Jacobi-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Brenti's recursive matrix, and so on.
Periodicity and Circulant Matrices in the Riordan Array of a Polynomial
We consider Riordan arrays $\bigl(1/(1-t^{d+1}), ~ tp(t)\bigr)$. These are infinite lower triangular matrices determined by the formal power series $1/(1-t^{d+1})$ and a polynomial $p(t)$ of degree $d$. Columns of such matrix are eventually periodic sequences with a period of $d + 1$, and circulant matrices are used to describe the long term behavior of such periodicity when the column's index grows indefinitely. We also discuss some combinatorially interesting sequences that appear through the corresponding A - and Z - sequences of such Riordan arrays.

We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbfφ)$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, φ_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbfφ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.
Partial Motzkin paths with air pockets of the first kind avoiding peaks, valleys or double rises
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) of the first kind are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets. They are lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down-steps cannot be consecutive. We enumerate MAP and their prefixes avoiding peaks (resp. valleys, resp. double rise) according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. We express our results using Riordan arrays. Finally, we provide constructive bijections between these paths and restricted Dyck and Motzkin paths.

Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets by adding some horizontal steps with certain conditions. In this paper, we introduce two generalizations. The first one consists of lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down steps cannot be consecutive, while the second one are lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin, made of steps $U$, $D_k$ and $H$, where each step $D_k$ and $H$ is necessarily followed by an up step, except for the last step of the path. We provide enumerative results for these paths according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. A similar study is made for these paths read from right to left. As a byproduct, we obtain new classes of paths counted by the Motzkin numbers. Finally, we express our results using Riordan arrays.
Conjectures on Somos $4$, $6$ and $8$ sequences using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers
We give conjectures on the form of families of integer sequences whose Hankel transforms are, respectively, $(α, β)$ Somos $4$ sequences, $(α, 0, γ)$ Somos $6$ sequences, and $(α, β, γ, δ)$ Somos $8$ sequences, for particular values of $α$, $β$, $γ$, $δ$ which we describe. The sequences involved can be described in terms of the application of certain stretched Riordan arrays to the Catalan numbers, accompanied by a (sequence) Hankel transform. The combination of Riordan array and the Catalan numbers results from the study of certain generalized Jacobi continued fractions, based on the Counting Automata Methodology.

We study three operations on Riordan arrays. First, we investigate when the sum of Riordan arrays yields another Riordan array. We characterize the $A$- and $Z$-sequences of these sums of Riordan arrays, and also identify an analog for $A$-sequences when the sum of Riordan arrays does not yield a Riordan array. In addition, we define the new operations `Der' and `Flip' on Riordan arrays. We fully characterize the Riordan arrays resulting from these operations applied to the Appell and Lagrange subgroups of the Riordan group. Finally, we study the application of these operations to various known Riordan arrays, generating many combinatorial identities in the process.
A Three-parameter Family Of Involutions In The Riordan Group Defined By Orthogonal Polynomials
We show how to define, for every Riordan group element $(g(x), f(x))$, an involution in the Riordan group. More generally, we show that for every pseudo-involution $P$ in the Riordan group, we can define a new involution beginning with an arbitrary element $(g(x), f(x))$ in the Riordan group. We then use this result to show that certain two-parameter families of orthogonal polynomials defined by a Riordan array can lead to involutions in the Riordan group, and we give an explicit form of these involutions.
The Vertical Recursive Relation of Riordan Arrays and Their Matrix Representation
A vertical recursive relation approach to Riordan arrays is induced, while the horizontal recursive relation is represented by $A$- and $Z$-sequences. This vertical recursive approach gives a way to represent the entries of a Riordan array $(g,f)$ in terms of a recursive linear combinations of the coefficients of $g$. A matrix representation of the vertical recursive relation is also given. The set of all those matrices forms a group, called the quasi-Riordan group. The extensions of the horizontal recursive relation and the vertical recursive relation in terms of $c$- and $C$- Riordan arrays are defined with illustrations by using the rook triangle and the Laguerre triangle. Those extensions represent a way to study nonlinear recursive relations of the entries of some triangular matrices from linear recursive relations of the entries of Riordan arrays. In addition, the matrix representation of the vertical recursive relation of Riordan arrays provides transforms between lower order and high order finite Riordan arrays, where the $m$th order Riordan array is defined by $(g,f)_m=(d_{n,k})_{m\geq n,k\geq 0}$. Furthermore, the vertical relation approach to Riordan arrays provides a unified approach to construct identities.

We consider two families of Pascal-like triangles that have all ones on the left side and ones separated by $m-1$ zeros on the right side. The $m=1$ cases are Pascal's triangle and the two families also coincide when $m=2$. Members of the first family obey Pascal's recurrence everywhere inside the triangle. We show that the $m$-th triangle can also be obtained by reversing the elements up to and including the main diagonal in each row of the $(1/(1-x^m),x/(1-x))$ Riordan array. Properties of this family of triangles can be obtained quickly as a result. The $(n,k)$-th entry in the $m$-th member of the second family of triangles is the number of tilings of an $(n+k)\times1$ board that use $k$ $(1,m-1)$-fences and $n-k$ unit squares. A $(1,g)$-fence is composed of two unit square sub-tiles separated by a gap of width $g$. We show that the entries in the antidiagonals of these triangles are coefficients of products of powers of two consecutive Fibonacci polynomials and give a bijective proof that these coefficients give the number of $k$-subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n-m\}$ such that no two elements of a subset differ by $m$. Other properties of the second family of triangles are also obtained via a combinatorial approach. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for any Pascal-like triangle (or its row-reversed version) derived from tiling $(n\times1)$-boards to be a Riordan array.

Recently, several authors have considered lattice paths with various steps, including vertical steps permitted. In this paper, we consider a kind of generalized Motzkin paths, called {\it G-Motzkin paths} for short, that is lattice paths from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the $XOY$-plane that consist of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. We mainly count the number of G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ with given number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, and enumerate the statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps" at given level in G-Motzkin paths for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, some explicit formulas and combinatorial identities are given by bijective and algebraic methods, some enumerative results are linked with Riordan arrays according to the structure decompositions of G-Motzkin paths. We also discuss the statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}_1\mathbf{z}_2$-steps" in G-Motzkin paths for $\mathbf{z}_1, \mathbf{z}_2\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, the exact counting formulas except for $\mathbf{z}_1\mathbf{z}_2=\mathbf{dd}$ are obtained by the Lagrange inversion formula and their generating functions.

A generalized Motzkin path, called G-Motzkin path for short, of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the XOY-plane that consists of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. An $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin path is a weighted G-Motzkin path such that the $\mathbf{u}$-steps, $\mathbf{h}$-steps, $\mathbf{v}$-steps and $\mathbf{d}$-steps are weighted respectively by $1, a, b$ and $c$. In this paper, we first give bijections between the set of $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ and the set of $(a,b)$-Schröder paths as well as the set of $(a+b,b)$-Dyck paths of length $2n$, between the set of $\{\mathbf{uvu, uu}\}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ and the set of $(a+b,ab)$-Motzkin paths of length $n$, between the set of $\{\mathbf{uvu,uu}\}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n+1$ beginning with an $\mathbf{h}$-step weighted by $a$ and the set of $(a,b)$-Dyck paths of length $2n+2$. In the last section, we focus on the enumeration of statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps" for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$ and "number of points" at given level in $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding G-Motzkin paths. These counting results are linked with Riordan arrays.
Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group

We consider pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where the generating function $g$ for the first column of a Riordan array satisfies a palindromic or near-palindromic functional equation. For those types of equations, we find, for very little work, the pseudo-involutory companion of $g$ and have a pseudo-involution in a $k$-Bell subgroup. There are only slight differences in the ordinary and exponential cases. In many cases, we also develop a general method for finding B-functions of Riordan pseudo-involutions in $k$-Bell subgroups, and show that these B-functions involve Chebyshev polynomials. We apply our method for many families of Riordan arrays, both new and already known.
We also have some duality and reciprocity results. Since many of the examples we discuss have combinatorial significance, we conclude with a few remarks on the general framework for a combinatorial interpretation of some of the generating function results we obtain.
Riordan arrays and Jacobi and Thron continued fractions
We show that certain Riordan arrays have generating functions that can be expressed as continued fractions of Jacobi and Thron type. We investigate the inverses of such arrays, which in certain circumstances can also have generating functions representable as continued fractions. Links to orthogonal polynomial moment sequences, and to Laurent biorthogonal polynomials are developed. We show that certain Riordan group involutions can be defined by continued fractions. We also show how simple transformations of the Jacobi continued fractions can lead to exponential Riordan arrays. Finally, by way of contrast, we look at the case of some non Riordan arrays that are of combinatorial significance, including the Narayana numbers.
