A Generalized Supercongruence of Z.-W. Sun
In this paper, we employ the Wilf-Zeilberger (WZ) method to prove a supercongruence conjecture posed by Z.-W. Sun: for any prime $p$, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-3}{2}}\frac{92k^2+61k+9}{(2k+1)64^k}{2k \choose k}{3k \choose k}{4k \choose 2k}\equiv 6p+16p^2\left(\frac{-1}{p}\right) \pmod{p^3}, \end{align*} where $\left(\frac{\cdot}{p}\right)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. Our proof relies on combinatorial identities and symbolic summation techniques.

The $α$-representation for Tait coloring and sums over spanning trees
Published in EuroComb'25, Booklet of extended abstracts. HUN-REN Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics, Budapest, 2025, pp. 724-730 (https://nextcloud.renyi.hu/index.php/s/TdjSmNjDjrQEH2X, electronic version only) • Search Publication
Consider a connected pseudograph $H$ such that each edge is associated with weight $x_e$, $x_e \in \mathbb{F}_3$; $\mathcal{T}(H)$ is the set of spanning trees of graph $H$. Assume that $s(H;{\mathbf x})=\sum_{T\in\mathcal{T}(H)} \prod_{e\in E(T)} x_e$. Let $G$ be a maximal planar graph (arbitrary planar triangulation) such that each face $F$ is assigned the value $α(F)=\pm 1 \in \mathbb{F}_3$. Then we can associate each edge with $x_e=α(F'_e)+α(F''_e)$, where $F'_e$ and $F''_e$ are the faces containing edge $e$. Let us define the value $w_G({\mathbf x})$ as $\left(\frac{s(G/W^*({\mathbf x});{\mathbf x})}3\right)/(-3)^{\left(|V(G/W^*({\mathbf x}))| - 1\right)/2}$; here $\left(\frac{x}3\right)$ is the Legendre symbol, $G/W$ is the graph with the contracted set of vertices $W$, while $W^*({\mathbf x})$ is a set of vertices $W$, $W \subseteq V(G)$, with minimal cardinality such that $s(G/W;{\mathbf x})$ differs from zero. In the following, we prove that the number of Tait colorings for graph $G$ equals the tripled sum $w_G({\mathbf x}(α))$ with respect to all possible vectors $α\in \{-1, 1\}^{\mathcal F(G)}$ such that $G/W^*({\mathbf x}(α))$ has an odd number of vertices, where $\mathcal F(G)$ is the set of faces of graph $G$. Keywords: maximal planar graph, Tait coloring, Laplace-Kirchhoff matrix, spanning tree.

Congruences for sums of Delannoy numbers and polynomials
In this paper, we apply the power-partible reduction to study arithmetic properties of sums involving Delannoy numbers $D_k$ and polynomials $D_k(z)$. Let $v\in\bN$ and $p$ be an odd prime. It is proved that, for any $z\in\bZ\setminus\{0,-1\}$, there exist $c_v\in z^{-v}\bZ[z]$ and $\tilde{c}_v\in (z+1)^{-v}\bZ[z]$, both free of $p$ and can be determined mechanically, such that \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{2v}D_k(z)\equiv c_v \left(\frac{-z}{p}\right) \pmod {p} \end{equation*} if $\gcd(p,z)=1$ and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(-1)^k(2k+1)^{2v}D_k(z)\equiv \tilde{c}_v \left(\frac{z+1}{p}\right) \pmod {p} \end{equation*} if $\gcd(p,z+1)=1$. Here $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. When $n$ is a power of $2$, we find there exist odd integers $ρ_v$ and even integers $\tildeρ_v$, both independent of $n$ and can be determined mechanically, such that \[ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{2v+1}D_k\equiv ρ_v n \pmod {n^3} \] and \[ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(-1)^k(2k+1)^{2v+1}D_k\equiv \tildeρ_v n^2 \pmod {n^3}. \] The case $v=1$ in the last congruence confirms a conjecture of Guo and Zeng in 2012.

A family of polynomials and related congruences and series
Published in Frontiers in Combinatorics and Number Theory 2 (2026), 1--22 • Search Publication
In this paper we study a family of polynomials $$S_n^{(m)}(x):=\sum_{i,j=0}^n\binom ni^m\binom nj^m\binom{i+j}ix^{i+j}\ \ (m,n=0,1,2,\ldots).$$ For example, we show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}S_k^{(0)}(x)\equiv\frac x{2x-1}\left(1+\left(\frac{1-4x^2}p\right)\right)\pmod p $$ for any odd prime $p$ and integer $x\not\equiv1/2\pmod p$, where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also formulate some open conjectures on related congruences and series for $1/π$. For example, we conjecture that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty(7k+1)\frac{S_k^{(2)}(1/11)}{9^k}=\frac{5445}{104\sqrt{39}\,π}$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty(1365k+181)\frac{S_k^{(2)}(1/18)}{16^k}=\frac{1377}{\sqrt2\,π}.$$

The $α$-representation for the Tait coloring and for the characteristic polynomial of matroid
Consider a finite field $\mathbb F_q$, $q=p^d$, where $p$ is an odd number. Let $M=(E,r)$ be a regular matroid; denote by ${\mathcal B}$ the family of its bases, $\bar s(M;α)=\sum_{B\in {\mathcal B}}\prod_{e\not\in B} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$, $α_e\neq 0$. Let a subset $A\equiv A(α)$ in $E$ have the maximal cardinality and satisfy the condition $\bar s(M|A;α)\neq 0$, while ${r^*}(α)=|A|-r(E)$. Let us represent the value of the characteristic polynomial of the matroid $M$ at the point $q$ as the linear combination of Legendre symbols with respect to $\bar s(M|A;α)$, whose coefficients are modulo equal to $1/q^{r^*(α)/2}$. This representation generalizes the formula for a flow polynomial of a graph which was obtained by us earlier. The latter formula is an analog of the so-called $α$-representation of vacuum Feynman amplitudes in the case of a finite field, which has inspired the Kontsevich conjecture (1997). The $α$-representation technique is also applicable for expressing the number of Tait colorings for a cubic biconnected planar graph in terms of principal minors of the matrix of faces of this graph.

A combinatorial approach to Berkovich type identities
Motivated by Berkovich's nine $q$-binomial identities involving the Legendre symbol $(\frac{d}{3})$, we establish a unified form of $q$-binomial identities of this type through a combinatorial approach. This unified form includes Berkovich's nine identities as special cases. Many such identities can be also deduced from this unified form.

Quadratic residues and domino tilings
The formula for the number of domino tilings due to Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher is strikingly similar to Eisenstein's formula for the Legendre symbol. We study the connection between these two concepts and prove a formula which expresses the Jacobi symbol in terms of domino tilings.

On congruences involving Apéry numbers

In this paper, we mainly establish a congruence for a sum involving Apéry numbers, which was conjectured by Z.-W. Sun. Namely, for any prime $p>3$ and positive odd integer $m$, we prove that there is a $p$-adic integer $c_m$ only depending on $m$ such that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{m}(-1)^kA_k\equiv c_mp\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\pmod{p^3},$$ where $A_k=\sum_{j=0}^{k}\binom{k}{j}^2\binom{k+j}{j}^2$ is the Apéry number and $(\frac{\cdot}{p})$ is the Legendre symbol.
On the Paley graph of a quadratic character
Paley graphs form a nice link between the distribution of quadratic residues and graph theory. These graphs possess remarkable properties which make them useful in several branches of mathematics. Classically, for each prime number $p$ we can construct the corresponding Paley graph using quadratic and non-quadratic residues modulo $p$. Therefore, Paley graphs are naturally associated with the Legendre symbol at $p$ which is a quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor $p$. In this article, we introduce the generalized Paley graphs. These are graphs that are associated with a general quadratic Dirichlet character. We will then provide some of their basic properties. In particular, we describe their spectrum explicitly. We then use those generalized Paley graphs to construct some new families of Ramanujan graphs. Finally, using special values of $L$-functions, we provide an effective upper bound for their Cheeger number.

Supercongruences involving Motzkin numbers and central trinomial coefficients

Let $M_n$ and $T_n$ denote the $n$th Motzkin number and the $n$th central trinomial coefficient respectively. We prove that for any prime $p\ge 5$, \begin{align*} &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}M_k^2\equiv \left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\left(2-6p\right)\pmod{p^2},\\ &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}kM_k^2\equiv \left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\left(9p-1\right)\pmod{p^2},\\ &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}T_kM_k\equiv \frac{4}{3}\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)+\frac{p}{6}\left(1-9\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\right)\pmod{p^2}, \end{align*} where $\left(-\right)$ is the Legendre symbol. These results confirm three 12-year-old supercongruence conjectures of Z.-W. Sun.

Let $\mathcal{C}_n =\left [χ_λ(μ)\right]_{λ, μ}$ be the character table for $S_n,$ where the indices $λ$ and $μ$ run over the $p(n)$ many integer partitions of $n.$ In this note we study $Z_{\ell}(n),$ the number of zero entries $χ_λ(μ)$ in $\mathcal{C}_n,$ where $λ$ is an $\ell$-core partition of $n.$ For every prime $\ell\geq 5,$ we prove an asymptotic formula of the form $$ Z_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}\cdot σ_{\ell}(n+δ_{\ell})p(n)\gg_{\ell} n^{\frac{\ell-5}{2}}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}},$$ where $σ_{\ell}(n)$ is a twisted Legendre symbol divisor function, $δ_{\ell}:=(\ell^2-1)/24,$ and $1/α_{\ell}>0$ is a normalization of the Dirichlet $L$-value $L\left(\left(\frac{\cdot}{\ell}\right),\frac{\ell-1}{2}\right).$ For primes $\ell$ and $n>\ell^6/24,$ we show that $χ_λ(μ)=0$ whenever $λ$ and $μ$ are both $\ell$-cores. Furthermore, if $Z^*_{\ell}(n)$ is the number of zero entries indexed by two $\ell$-cores, then for $\ell\geq 5$ we obtain the asymptotic $$ Z^*_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}^2 \cdot σ_{\ell}( n+δ_{\ell})^2 \gg_{\ell} n^{\ell-3}. $$

Supercongruences for central trinomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ the central trinomial coefficient $T_n$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+x+1)^n$. In 2016 the second author conjectured that for any prime $p>3$ and positive integer $n$ the quotient $(T_{pn}-T_n)/(pn)^2$ is a $p$-adic integer. In this paper we confirm this conjecture and prove further that $$\frac{T_{pn}-T_n}{(pn)^2}\equiv\frac{T_{n-1}}6\left(\frac p3\right)B_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod p,$$ where $(\frac p3)$ is the Legendre symbol and $B_{p-2}(x)$ is the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $p-2$.

$p$-adic supercongruences conjectured by Sun
In this paper we prove three results conjectured by Z.-W. Sun. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $h\in \mathbb{Z}$ with $2h-1\equiv0\pmod{p^{}}$. For $a\in\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ and $p^a>3$, we show that \begin{align}\notag \sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}\bigg(-\frac{h}{2}\bigg)^k\equiv0\pmod{p^{a+1}}. \end{align} Also, for any $n\in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$ we have \begin{align} \notag ν_{p}\bigg(\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\binom{hn-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}\bigg(-\frac{h}{2}\bigg)^k\bigg)\geqν_{p}(n)\notag, \end{align} where $ν_p(n)$ denotes the $p$-adic order of $n$. For any integer $m\not\equiv 0\pmod{p^{}}$ and positive integer $n$, we have \begin{align*} \frac{1}{pn}\bigg(\sum_{k=0}^{pn-1}\binom{pn-1}{k}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{(-m)^k}-\bigg(\frac{m(m-4)}{p}\bigg)\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\binom{n-1}{k}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{(-m)^k}\bigg)\in \mathbb{Z}_{p}, \end{align*} where $(\frac{.}{})$ is the Legendre symbol and $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is the ring of $p$-adic integers.

Some parametric congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients

For $n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $b,c\in\mathbb{Z}$, the $n$th generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$. In particular, $T_n=T_n(1,1)$ is the central trinomial coefficient. In this paper, we mainly establish some parametric congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients. As consequences, we prove that for any prime $p>3$ $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{12^k}T_k\equiv\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\frac{3^{p-1}+3}{4}\pmod{p^2} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{T_kH_k}{3^k}\equiv\frac{3+\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)}{2}-p\left(1+\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol and $H_k:=\sum_{j=1}^k1/j$ denotes the $k$th harmonic number. Class Numbers and Self-Conjugate 7-Cores
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate $sc_7(n)$, the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions of size $n$. It turns out that $sc_7(n)=0$ for $n\equiv 7\pmod 8$. For $n\equiv 1, 3, 5\pmod 8$, with $n\not \equiv 5\pmod 7,$ we find that $sc_7(n)$ is essentially a Hurwitz class number. Using recent work of Gao and Qin, we show that $$ sc_7(n) = 2^{-\varepsilon(n)-1}\cdot H(-D_n), $$ where $-D_n:=-4^{\varepsilon(n)}(7n+14)$ and $\varepsilon(n):=\frac{1}{2}\cdot(1+(-1)^{\frac{n-1}{2}})$. This fact implies several corollaries which are of interest. For example, if $-D_n$ is a fundamental discriminant and $p\not \in \{2, 7\}$ is a prime with $ord_p(-D_n)\leq 1$, then for every positive integer $k$ we have $$ sc_7\left((n+2)p^{2k}-2\right)=sc_7(n)\cdot \left(1+\frac{p^{k+1}-p}{p-1}-\frac{p^k-1}{p-1}.\left(\frac{-D_n}{p}\right)\right), $$ where $\left(\frac{-D_n}{p}\right)$ is the Legendre symbol.

Flow polynomials as Feynman amplitudes and their $α$-representation
Published in Electron. J. Combin., vol. 24, (2017), no.1, paper 11, 19 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph; denote by $τ(G)$ the set of its spanning trees. Let $\mathbb F_q$ be a finite field, $s(α,G)=\sum_{T\inτ(G)} \prod_{e \in E(T)} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$. Kontsevich conjectured in 1997 that the number of nonzero values of $s(α, G)$ is a polynomial in $q$ for all graphs. This conjecture was disproved by Brosnan and Belkale. In this paper, using the standard technique of the Fourier transformation of Feynman amplitudes, we express the flow polynomial $F_G(q)$ in terms of the "correct" Kontsevich formula. Our formula represents $F_G(q)$ as a linear combination of Legendre symbols of $s(α, H)$ with coefficients $\pm 1/q^{(|V(H)|-1)/2}$, where $H$ is a contracted graph of $G$ depending on $α\in \left(\mathbb F^*_q\right)^{E(G)}$, and $|V(H)|$ is odd. The case $q=5$ corresponds to the least number with which all coefficients in the linear combination are positive. This allows us to hope that the obtained result can be applied to prove the Tutte 5-flow conjecture.
