Recurrences for permutations with long increasing subsequences
We prove two simple bivariate recurrences for the number of permutations with a long increasing subsequence. The two recurrences imply D-finiteness of the sequence in a certain range. As a consequence, we also obtain a proof of a conjecture posed by Kauers and Koutschan in 2023.

A new recursive construction for large sets of Kirkman triple systems
We give a recursive construction of an LKTS(7q + 2) from an LKTS(q + 2) and an auxiliary permutation structure on an abelian group of order q, which we call a cubic orthomorphism. We prove that cubic orthomorphisms exist whenever q is a product of prime powers congruent to 1 modulo 6. The construction yields, in particular, LKTSs of orders 93, 177, 219, 261, and 303.

On a parametric congruence concerning generalized central trinomial coefficients
For any $n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $b,c\in\mathbb{C}$, the $n$-th generalized central trinomial coefficient is defined as the constant term in the Laurent expansion of $(b+x+cx^{-1})^n$. In this paper, utilizing the constant term method and generating functions, we prove a parametric congruence concerning generalized central trinomial coefficients. As applications, we confirm several conjectures of Z.-W. Sun.
Upper Bounds on Multiple $b$-Burst Deletion-Correcting Codes
Motivated by their applications in DNA-based storage systems, codes capable of correcting consecutive deletions have attracted significant attention. An important class of such codes consists of those that can correct multiple consecutive deletion errors, commonly referred to as multiple $b$-burst deletion-correcting codes. In this paper, we investigate the fundamental limits of multiple $b$-burst deletion-correcting codes. Specifically, we first characterize several structural properties of the associated deletion balls. Then, leveraging these properties, we derive several upper bounds and a combinatorial lower bound on the maximum size of such codes. As a consequence, our bounds improve upon the previously known results for general parameter regimes and are shown to be asymptotically optimal for certain cases.

On some conjectural supercongruences involving the sequence $t_n(x)$
In this paper, we study some supercongruences involving the sequence $$ t_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}2^k $$ and solve some open problems. For any odd prime $p$ and $p$-adic integer $x$, we determine $\sum_{n=0}^{p-1}t_n(x)^2$ and $\sum_{n=0}^{p-1}(n+1)t_n(x)^2$ modulo $p^2$; for example, we establish that \begin{align*} \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}t_n(x)^2\equiv\begin{cases} \left(\dfrac{-1}{p}\right)\pmod{p^2},&\text{if }2x\equiv-1\pmod{p},\\[8pt] (-1)^{\langle x\rangle_p}\dfrac{p+2(x-\langle x\rangle_p)}{2x+1}\pmod{p^2},&\text{otherwise,} \end{cases} \end{align*} where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative residue of $x$ modulo $p$. This confirms a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun.

On a conjectural supercongruence involving the dual sequence $s_n(x)$
In 2017, motivated by a supercongruence conjectured by Kimoto and Wakayama and confirmed by Long, Osburn and Swisher, Z.-W. Sun introduced the sequence of polynomials: $$ s_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}(-1)^k\binom{x}{k}\binom{-1-x}{k} $$ and investigated its congruence properties. In particular, Z.-W. Sun conjectured that for any prime $p>3$ and $p$-adic integer $x\neq-1/2$ one has \begin{equation*} \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}s_n(x)^2\equiv (-1)^{\langle x\rangle_p}\frac{p+2(x-\langle x\rangle_p)}{2x+1}\pmod{p^3}, \end{equation*} where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative residue of $x$ modulo $p$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture.

A refined $q$-analogue of some congruences of Van Hamme
In 1997, Van Hamme proposed 13 supercongruences corresponding to $1/π$ series of the Ramanujan-type. Inspired by the recent work of V.J.W. Guo, we establish a unified $q$-analogue of Van Hamme's (B.2), (E.2) and (F.2) supercongruences, which is also a refinement of some known results obtained by different authors. As a consequence, we give a parametric supercongruence related to the Euler polynomials.

Refinements of Van Hamme's (E.2) and (F.2) supercongruences and two supercongruences by Swisher
In 1997, Van Hamme proposed 13 supercongruences on truncated hypergeometric series. Van Hamme's (B.2) supercongruence was first confirmed by Mortenson and received a WZ proof by Zudilin later. In 2012, using the WZ method again, Sun extended Van Hamme's (B.2) supercongruence to the modulus $p^4$ case, where $p$ is an odd prime. In this paper, by using a more general WZ pair, we generalize Hamme's (E.2) and (F.2) supercongruences, as well as two supercongruences by Swisher, to the modulus $p^4$ case. Our generalizations of these supercongruences are related to Euler polynomials. We also put forward a relevant conjecture on $q$-congruences for further study.

Supercongruences involving binomial coefficients and Euler polynomials
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $x$ be a $p$-adic integer. In this paper, we establish supercongruences for $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}(-4)^k}{(dk+1)\binom{2k}{k}}\pmod{p^2} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}(-2)^k}{(dk+1)\binom{2k}{k}}\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $d\in\{0,1,2\}$. As consequences, we extend some known results. For example, for $p>3$ we show $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{3k}{k}\left(\frac{4}{27}\right)^k\equiv\frac19+\frac89p+\frac{4}{27}pE_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $E_n(x)$ denotes the Euler polynomial of degree $n$. This generalizes a known congruence of Z.-W. Sun.

Batch Array Codes
Batch codes are a type of codes specifically designed for coded distributed storage systems and private information retrieval protocols. These codes have got much attention in recent years due to their ability to enable efficient and secure storage in distributed systems. In this paper, we study an array code version of the batch codes, which is called the \emph{batch array code} (BAC). Under the setting of BAC, each node stores a bucket containing multiple code symbols and responds with a locally computed linear combination of the symbols in its bucket during the recovery of a requested symbol. We demonstrate that BACs can support the same type of requests as the original batch codes but with reduced redundancy. Specifically, we establish information theoretic lower bounds on the code lengths and provide several code constructions that confirm the tightness of the lower bounds for certain parameter regimes.

Two supercongruences involving truncated hypergeometric series
In this paper, we mainly establish two supercongruences involving truncated hypergeometric series by using some hypergeometric transformation formulas. The first supercongruence confirms a recent conjecture of the second author. The second supercongruence confirms a conjecture of Guo, Liu and Schlosser partially, and gives a parametric extension of a supercongruence of Long and Ramakrishna.

An asymptotic approach to Borwein-type sign pattern theorems
The celebrated (First) Borwein Conjecture predicts that for all positive integers~$n$ the sign pattern of the coefficients of the ``Borwein polynomial'' $$(1-q)(1-q^2)(1-q^4)(1-q^5) \cdots(1-q^{3n-2})(1-q^{3n-1})$$ is $+--+--\cdots$. It was proved by the first author in [Adv. Math. 394 (2022), Paper No. 108028]. In the present paper, we extract the essentials from the former paper and enhance them to a conceptual approach for the proof of ``Borwein-like'' sign pattern statements. In particular, we provide a new proof of the original (First) Borwein Conjecture, a proof of the Second Borwein Conjecture (predicting that the sign pattern of the square of the ``Borwein polynomial'' is also $+--+--\cdots$), and a partial proof of a ``cubic'' Borwein Conjecture due to the first author (predicting the same sign pattern for the cube of the ``Borwein polynomial''). Many further applications are discussed.

A parametric congruence motivated by Orr's identity

For any $m,n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2\ldots\}$, the truncated hypergeometric series ${}_{m+1}F_m$ is defined by $$ {}_{m+1}F_m\bigg[\begin{matrix}x_0&x_1&\ldots&x_m\\ &y_1&\ldots&y_m\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\frac{(x_0)_k(x_1)_k\cdots(x_m)_k}{(y_1)_k\cdots(y_m)_k}\cdot\frac{z^k}{k!}, $$ where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol. Let $p$ be an odd prime. For $α,z\in\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $\langle -α\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative residue of $x$ modulo $p$ for any $x\in\mathbb{Z}_p$, we mainly prove the following congruence motivated by Orr's identity: $$ {}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac32-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}{}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac12-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv{}_3F_2\bigg[\begin{matrix}α&2-α&\frac12\\ &1&1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\pmod{p^2}. $$ As a corollary, for any positive integer $b$ with $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{b}$ and $\langle -1/b\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, we deduce that $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(b^2k+b-1)\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{4^k}\binom{-1/b}{k}\binom{1/b-1}{k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2}. $$ This confirms a conjectural congruence of the second author.

Congruences concerning generalized central trinomial coefficients

For any $n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $b,c\in\mathbb{Z}$, the generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ denotes the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$. Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper, we determine the summation $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}T_k(b,c)^2/m^k$ modulo $p^2$ for integers $m$ with certain restrictions. As applications, we confirm some conjectural congruences of Sun [Sci. China Math. 57 (2014), 1375--1400].

Proof of some supercongruences concerning truncated hypergeometric series

In this paper, we prove some supercongruences concerning truncated hypergeometric series. For example, we show that for any prime $p>3$ and positive integer $r$, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p^r-1}(3k+1)\frac{(\frac12)_k^3}{(1)_k^3}4^k\equiv p^r+\frac76p^{r+3}B_{p-3}\pmod{p^{r+4}} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{(p^r-1)/2}(4k+1)\frac{(\frac12)_k^4}{(1)_k^4}\equiv p^r+\frac76p^{r+3}B_{p-3}\pmod{p^{r+4}}, $$ where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol and $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are Bernoulli numbers. These two congruences confirm conjectures of Sun [Sci. China Math. 54 (2011), 2509--2535] and Guo [Adv. Appl. Math. 120 (2020), Art. 102078], respectively.

Proof of some conjectural hypergeometric supercongruences via curious identities

In this paper, we prove several supercongruences conjectured by Z.-W. Sun ten years ago via certain strange hypergeometric identities. For example, for any prime $p>3$, we show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{4k}{2k+1}\binom{2k}k}{48^k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2},$$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}\binom{3k}{k}}{24^k}\equiv\begin{cases}\binom{(2p-2)/3}{(p-1)/3}\pmod{p^2}\ &\mbox{if}\ p\equiv1\pmod{3},\\ p/\binom{(2p+2)/3}{(p+1)/3}\pmod{p^2}\ &\mbox{if}\ p\equiv2\pmod{3}.\end{cases} $$ We also obtain some other results of such types.

Some $q$-congruences arising from certain identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, by constructing some identities, we prove some $q$-analogues of some congruences. For example, for any odd integer $n>1$, we show that \begin{gather*} \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \frac{(q^{-1};q^2)_k}{(q;q)_k} q^k \equiv (-1)^{(n+1)/2} q^{(n^2-1)/4} - (1+q)[n] \pmod{Φ_n(q)^2},\\ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{(q^3;q^2)_k}{(q;q)_k} q^k \equiv (-1)^{(n+1)/2} q^{(n^2-9)/4} + \frac{1+q}{q^2}[n]\pmod{Φ_n(q)^2}, \end{gather*} where the $q$-Pochhanmmer symbol is defined by $(x;q)_0=1$ and $(x;q)_k = (1-x)(1-xq)\cdots(1-xq^{k-1})$ for $k\geq1$, the $q$-integer is defined by $[n]=1+q+\cdots+q^{n-1}$ and $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. The $q$-congruences above confirm some recent conjectures of Gu and Guo.

On two conjectural supercongruences of Z.-W. Sun

For any prime $p>3$, we prove that \begin{gather*} \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\frac{n+1}{8^n}\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{2k}{k}^2\binom{2n-2k}{n-k}^2\equiv(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p+5p^3E_{p-3}\pmod{p^4},\\ \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\frac{2n+1}{(-16)^n}\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{2k}{k}^2\binom{2n-2k}{n-k}^2\equiv(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p+3p^3E_{p-3}\pmod{p^4}, \end{gather*} where $E_{p-3}$ is the $(p-3)$th Euler number.
