A supercongruence involving Delannoy numbers and Schröder numbers
Published in J. Number Theory 168 (2016), 117--127 • View PublicationBIB
The Delannoy numbers and Schröder numbers are given by \begin{align*} D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}{n+k\choose k}\quad \text{and}\quad S_n=\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}{n+k\choose k}\frac{1}{k+1}, \end{align*} respectively. Let $p>3$ be a prime. We mainly prove that \begin{align*} \sum_{k=1}^{p-1}D_k S_k\equiv 2p^3B_{p-3}-2pH^{*}_{p-1} \pmod{p^4}, \end{align*} where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number and those $H^{*}_n$ are the alternating harmonic numbers given by $H^{*}_n=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{(-1)^k}{k}$. This supercongruence was originally conjectured by Z.-W. Sun in 2011.

Catalan-like numbers and Stieltjes moment sequences
Published in Discrete Math. 339 (2016) 484--488 • View PublicationBIB
We provide sufficient conditions under which the Catalan-like numbers are Stieltjes moment sequences. As applications, we show that many well-known counting coefficients, including the Bell numbers, the Catalan numbers, the central binomial coefficients, the central Delannoy numbers, the factorial numbers, the large and little Schröder numbers, are Stieltjes moment sequences in a unified approach.
Divisors and specializations of Lucas polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Three-term recurrences have infused stupendous amount of research in a broad spectrum of the sciences, such as orthogonal polynomials (in special functions) and lattice paths (in enumerative combinatorics). Among these are the Lucas polynomials, which have seen a recent true revival. In this paper one of the themes of investigation is the specialization to the Pell and Delannoy numbers. The underpinning motivation comprises primarily of divisibility and symmetry. One of the most remarkable findings is a structural decomposition of the Lucas polynomials into what we term as flat and sharp analogs.

Some congruences related to the q-Fermat quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give q-analogues of the following congruences by Z.-W. Sun: \sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{k} \equiv -\frac{2^{p-1}-1}{p} \pmod p,\\ \sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{H_k}{k 2^k}\equiv 0 \pmod{p},\quad p\geqslant 5, where p is a prime, D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k} are the Delannoy numbers, and H_n=\sum_{k=1}^n\frac{1}{k} are the harmonic numbers. We also prove that, for any positive integer m and prime p>m+1, \sum_{1\leqslant k_1\leqslant \cdots \leqslant k_m\leqslant p-1}\frac{1}{k_1\cdots k_m 2^{k_m}} \equiv\frac{1}{2}\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^m} \pmod p, which is a multiple generalization of Kohnen's congruence. Furthermore, a q-analogue of this congruence is established.
A method for deterining the mod-$3^k$ behaviour of recursive sequences
We present a method for obtaining congruences modulo powers of 3 for sequences given by recurrences of finite depth with polynomial coefficients. We apply this method to Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, Riordan numbers, Schröder numbers, Eulerian numbers, trinomial coefficients, Delannoy numbers, and to functions counting free subgroups of finite index in the inhomogeneous modular group and its lifts. This leads to numerous new results, including many extensions of known results to higher powers of 3.
Infinitely Log-monotonic Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of infinitely log-monotonic sequences. By establishing a connection between completely monotonic functions and infinitely log-monotonic sequences, we show that the sequences of the Bernoulli numbers, the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients are infinitely log-monotonic. In particular, if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-monotonic of order two, then it is ratio log-concave in the sense that the sequence $\{a_{n+1}/a_{n}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-concave. Furthermore, we prove that if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq k}$ is ratio log-concave, then the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{a_n}\}_{n\geq k}$ is strictly log-concave subject to a certain initial condition. As consequences, we show that the sequences of the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, the central Delannoy numbers, the numbers of tree-like polyhexes and the Domb numbers are ratio log-concave. For the case of the Domb numbers $D_n$, we confirm a conjecture of Sun on the log-concavity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{D_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$.

Heisenberg characters, unitriangular groups, and Fibonacci numbers
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 119 (2012) 882-903 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ denote the group of unipotent $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over a finite field with $q$ elements. We show that the Heisenberg characters of $\UT_{n+1}(\FF_q)$ are indexed by lattice paths from the origin to the line $x+y=n$ using the steps $(1,0), (1,1), (0,1), (1,1)$, which are labeled in a certain way by nonzero elements of $\FF_q$. In particular, we prove for $n\geq 1$ that the number of Heisenberg characters of $\UT_{n+1}(\FF_q)$ is a polynomial in $q-1$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and degree $n$, whose leading coefficient is the $n$th Fibonacci number. Similarly, we find that the number of Heisenberg supercharacters of $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ is a polynomial in $q-1$ whose coefficients are Delannoy numbers and whose values give a $q$-analogue for the Pell numbers. By counting the fixed points of the action of a certain group of linear characters, we prove that the numbers of supercharacters, irreducible supercharacters, Heisenberg supercharacters, and Heisenberg characters of the subgroup of $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ consisting of matrices whose superdiagonal entries sum to zero are likewise all polynomials in $q-1$ with nonnegative integer coefficients.

On Delannoy numbers and Schröder numbers
Published in J. Number Theory 131(2011), no.12, 2387-2397 • View PublicationBIB
The n-th Delannoy number and the n-th Schröder number given by $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}$ and $S_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}/(k+1)$ respectively arise naturally from enumerative combinatorics. Let p be an odd prime. We mainly show that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}D_k/k^2=2(-1/p)E_{p-3} (mod p)$$ and $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}S_k/m^k=(m^2-6m+1)/(2m)*(1-((m^2-6m+1)/p) (mod p),$$ where (-) is the Legendre symbol, E_0,E_1,E_2,... are Euler numbers and m is any integer not divisible by p. We also conjecture that $\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}D_k^2/k^2=-2q_p(2)^2 (mod p)$, where $q_p(2)=(2^{p-1}-1)/p$.

Congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients
Published in Sci. China Math. 57(2014), 1375-1400 • View PublicationBIB
For integers $b$ and $c$ the generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ denotes the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$. Those $T_n=T_n(1,1)\ (n=0,1,2,\ldots)$ are the usual central trinomial coefficients, and $T_n(3,2)$ coincides with the Delannoy number $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom{n+k}k$ in combinatorics. We investigate congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients systematically. Here are some typical results: For each $n=1,2,3,\ldots$ we have $$\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)T_k(b,c)^2(b^2-4c)^{n-1-k}\equiv0\pmod{n^2}$$ and in particular $n^2\mid\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)D_k^2$; if $p$ is an odd prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}T_k^2\equiv\left(\frac{-1}p\right)\ \pmod{p}\ \ \ {\rm and}\ \ \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}D_k^2\equiv\left(\frac 2p\right)\ \pmod{p},$$ where $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also raise several conjectures some of which involve parameters in the representations of primes by certain binary quadratic forms.

New congruences for sums involving Apery numbers or central Delannoy numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Apéry numbers $A_n$ and central Delannoy numbers $D_n$ are defined by $$A_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}^2{2k\choose k}^2, \quad D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}. $$ Motivated by some recent work of Z.-W. Sun, we prove the following congruences: \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{2r+1}A_k &\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\varepsilon^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}D_k \equiv 0\pmod n, where $n\geqslant 1$, $r\geqslant 0$, and $\varepsilon=\pm1$. For $r=1$, we further show that \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv 0\pmod{n^3}, \quad \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv p^3 \pmod{2p^6}, where $p>3$ is a prime. The following congruence \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} {n+k\choose k}^2{n-1\choose k}^2 \equiv 0 \pmod{n} plays an important role in our proof.

Shifted Jacobi polynomials and Delannoy numbers
We express a weighted generalization of the Delannoy numbers in terms of shifted Jacobi polynomials. A specialization of our formulas extends a relation between the central Delannoy numbers and Legendre polynomials, observed over 50 years ago, to all Delannoy numbers and certain Jacobi polynomials. Another specialization provides a weighted lattice path enumeration model for shifted Jacobi polynomials, we use this to present a new combinatorial proof of the orthogonality of Jacobi polynomials with natural number parameters. The proof relates the orthogonality of these polynomials to the orthogonality of (generalized) Laguerre polynomials, as they arise in the theory of rook polynomials. We provide a combinatorial proof for the orthogonality of certain Romanovski-Jacobi polynomials with zero first parameter and negative integer second parameter, considered as an initial segment of the list of similarly transformed Jacobi polynomials with the same parameters. We observe that for an odd second parameter one more polynomial may be added to this finite orthogonal polynomial sequence than what was predicted by a classical result of Askey and Romanovski. The remaining transformed Jacobi polynomials in the sequence are either equal to the already listed Romanovski-Jacobi polynomials or monomial multiples of similarly transformed Jacobi polynomials with a positive second parameter. We provide expressions for an analogous weighted generalization of the Schröder numbers in terms of the Jacobi polynomials, and use this model, together with a result of Mansour and Sun, to express the Narayana polynomials in terms of shifted Jacobi polynomials.

Calculus proofs of some combinatorial inequalities
Published in Mathematical Inequalities & Applications 6 (2003) 197-209 • Search Publication
Using calculus we show how to prove some combinatorial inequalities of the type log-concavity or log-convexity. It is shown by this method that binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds are log-concave, and that Motzkin numbers and secondary structure numbers of rank 1 are log-convex. In fact, we prove via calculus a much stronger result that a natural continuous ``patchwork'' (i.e. corresponding dynamical systems) of Motzkin numbers and secondary structures recursions are increasing functions. We indicate how to prove asymptotically the log-convexity for general secondary structures. Our method also applies to show that sequences of values of some orthogonal polynomials, and in particular the sequence of central Delannoy numbers, are log-convex.

Why Delannoy numbers?
Published in Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 135, 1 (11/2005) 40-54 • View PublicationBIB
This article is not a research paper, but a little note on the history of combinatorics: We present here a tentative short biography of Henri Delannoy, and a survey of his most notable works. This answers to the question raised in the title, as these works are related to lattice paths enumeration, to the so-called Delannoy numbers, and were the first general way to solve Ballot-like problems. These numbers appear in probabilistic game theory, alignments of DNA sequences, tiling problems, temporal representation models, analysis of algorithms and combinatorial structures.
