Total positivity of a class of combinatorial matrices
In this paper, we consider matrices whose entries are combinatorial sequences which can be expressed in terms of a convolution of elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions. We establish the total positivity of these matrices using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.

An orthosymplectic Pieri rule
Published in Electron. J. Comb. Vol 25, Issue 3 (2018), Paper #P3.37 • View PublicationBIB
The classical Pieri formula gives a combinatorial rule for decomposing the product of a Schur function and a complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial as a linear combination of Schur functions with integer coefficients. We give a Pieri rule for describing the product of an orthosymplectic character and an orthosymplectic character arising from a one-row partition. We establish that the orthosymplectic Pieri rule coincides with Sundaram's Pieri rule for symplectic characters and that orthosymplectic characters and symplectic characters obey the same product rule.

A combinatorial model for $\nabla m_μ$
The modified Macdonald polynomials introduced by Garsia and Haiman (1996) have many remarkable combinatorial properties. One such class of properties involves applying the $\nabla$ operator of Bergeron and Garsia (1999) to basic symmetric functions. The first discovery of this type was the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov (2005), which relates the expression $\nabla e_n$ to parking functions. A refinement of this conjecture, called the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture, was introduced by Haglund, Morse, and Zabrocki (2012) and proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2015). We give a symmetric function identity relating hook monomial symmetric functions to the operators used in the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. This implies a parking function interpretation for nabla of a hook monomial symmetric function, as well as LLT positivity. We show that our identity is a $q$-analog of the expansion of a hook monomial into complete homogeneous symmetric functions given by Kulikauskas and Remmel (2006). We use this connection to conjecture a model for expanding $\nabla m_μ$ in this way when $μ$ is not a hook.

A q-Analog of Foulke's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a $q$-analog of classical plethystic conjectures due to Foulkes. In our conjectures, a divided difference of plethysms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials $H_n(\mathbf{x};q)$ replaces the analogous difference of plethysms of complete homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n(\mathbf{x})$ in Foulkes conjecture. At $q=0$, we get back the original statement of Foulkes, and we show that our version holds at $q=1$. We discuss further supporting evidence, as well as various generalizations.

A family of symmetric functions associated with Stirling permutations
We present exponential generating function analogues to two classical identities involving the ordinary generating function of the complete homogeneous symmetric functions. After a suitable specialization the new identities reduce to identities involving the first and second order Eulerian polynomials. The study of these identities led us to consider a family of symmetric functions associated with a class of permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, known in the literature as Stirling permutations. In particular, we define certain type statistics on Stirling permutations that refine the statistics of descents, ascents and plateaux and we show that their refined versions are equidistributed, generalizing a result of Bóna. The definition of this family of symmetric functions extends to the generality of $r$-Stirling permutations. We discuss some occurrences of these symmetric functions in the cases of $r=1$ and $r=2$.

Co-quasi-invariant spaces for finite complex reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study, in a global uniform manner, the quotient of the ring of polynomials in l sets of n variables, by the ideal generated by diagonal quasi-invariant polynomials for general permutation groups W=G(r,n). We show that, for each such group W, there is an explicit universal symmetric function that gives the N^l-graded Hilbert series for these spaces. This function is universal in that its dependance on l only involves the number of variables it is calculated with. We also discuss the combinatorial implications of the observed fact that it affords an expansion as a positive coefficient polynomial in the complete homogeneous symmetric functions.

Complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the Weingarten function
A connection is made between complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the unitary Weingarten function from random matrix theory. In particular we show that $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial of degree $r$ in the JM elements, coincides with the $r$th term in the asymptotic expansion of the Weingarten function. We use this connection to determine precisely which conjugacy classes occur in the class basis resolution of $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ and to explicitly determine the coefficients of the classes of minimal height when $r < n.$ These coefficients, which turn out to be products of Catalan numbers, are governed by the Moebius function of the non-crossing partition lattice $NC(n).$

A Hopf algebra of parking functions
If the moments of a probability measure on $\R$ are interpreted as a specialization of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, its free cumulants are, up to sign, the corresponding specializations of a sequence of Schur positive symmetric functions $(f_n)$. We prove that $(f_n)$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the natural permutation representation of $\SG_n$ on the set of prime parking functions. This observation leads us to the construction of a Hopf algebra of parking functions, which we study in some detail.
