McNamara and Pylyavskyy conjectured precisely which connected skew shapes are maximal in the Schur-positivity order, which says that $B\leq _s A$ if $s_A-s_B$ is Schur-positive. Towards this, McNamara and van Willigenburg proved that it suffices to study equitable ribbons, namely ribbons whose row lengths are all of length $a$ or $(a+1)$ for $a\geq 2$. In this paper we confirm the conjecture of McNamara and Pylyavskyy in all cases where the comparable equitable ribbons form a chain. We also confirm a conjecture of McNamara and van Willigenburg regarding which equitable ribbons in general are minimal.
Additionally, we establish two sufficient conditions for the difference of two ribbons to be Schur-positive, which manifest as diagrammatic operations on ribbons. We also deduce two necessary conditions for the difference of two equitable ribbons to be Schur-positive that rely on rows of length $a$ being at the end, or on rows of length $(a+1)$ being evenly distributed.

We compute an explicit $e$-positive formula for the chromatic symmetric function of a lollipop graph, $L_{m,n}$. From here we deduce that there exist countably infinite distinct $e$-positive, and hence Schur-positive, bases of the algebra of symmetric functions whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions. Finally, we resolve 6 conjectures on the chromatic symmetric function of a lariat graph, $L_{n+3}$.

The block number of a permutation is the maximal number of components in its expression as a direct sum. We show that, for $321$-avoiding permutations, the set of left-to-right maxima has the same distribution when the block number is assumed to be $k$ as when the last descent of the inverse is assumed to be at position $n - k$. This result is analogous to the Foata-Schützenberger equi-distribution theorem, and implies that the quasi-symmetric generating function of descent set over $321$-avoiding permutations with a prescribed number of blocks is Schur-positive.

The problem of finding Schur-positive sets of permutations, originally posed by Gessel and Reutenauer, has seen some recent developments. Schur-positive sets of pattern-avoiding permutations have been found by Sagan et al and a general construction based on geometric operations on grid classes has been given by the authors. In this paper we prove that horizontal rotations of Schur-positive subsets of permutations are always Schur-positive. The proof applies a cyclic action on standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes and a jeu-de-taquin type straightening algorithm. As a consequence of the proof we obtain a notion of cyclic descent set on these tableaux, which is rotated by the cyclic action on them.

Characterizing sets of permutations whose associated quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive is a long-standing problem in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper we present a general method to construct Schur-positive sets and multisets, based on geometric grid classes and the product operation. Our approach produces many new instances of Schur-positive sets, and provides a broad framework that explains the existence of known such sets that until now were sporadic cases.

We prove that the combinatorial side of the "Rational Shuffle Conjecture" provides a Schur-positive symmetric polynomial. Furthermore, we prove that the contribution of a given rational Dyck path can be computed as a certain skew LLT polynomial, thus generalizing the result of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel and Ulyanov. The corresponding skew diagram is described explicitly in terms of a certain (m,n)-core.
Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu

To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture.
However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.
A combinatorial proof that Schubert vs. Schur coefficients are nonnegative
We give a combinatorial proof that the product of a Schubert polynomial by a Schur polynomial is a nonnegative sum of Schubert polynomials. Our proof uses Assaf's theory of dual equivalence to show that a quasisymmetric function of Bergeron and Sottile is Schur-positive. By a geometric comparison theorem of Buch and Mihalcea, this implies the nonnegativity of Gromov-Witten invariants of the Grassmannian.
Schur-positivity in a Square

Determining if a symmetric function is Schur-positive is a prevalent and, in general, a notoriously difficult problem. In this paper we study the Schur-positivity of a family of symmetric functions. Given a partition λ, we denote by λ^c its complement in a square partition (m^m). We conjecture a Schur-positivity criterion for symmetric functions of the form s_{μ'}s_{μ^c}-s_{λ'}s_{λ^c}, where λis a partition of weight |μ|-1 contained in μand the complement of μis taken in the same square partition as the complement of λ. We prove the conjecture in many cases.

The Schur-positivity order on skew shapes is defined by B \leq A if the difference s_A - s_B is Schur-positive. It is an open problem to determine those connected skew shapes that are maximal with respect to this ordering. A strong necessary condition for the Schur-positivity of s_A - s_B is that the support of B is contained in that of A, where the support of B is defined to be the set of partitions lambda for which s_lambda appears in the Schur expansion of s_B. We show that to determine the maximal connected skew shapes in the Schur-positivity order and this support containment order, it suffices to consider a special class of ribbon shapes. We explicitly determine the support for these ribbon shapes, thereby determining the maximal connected skew shapes in the support containment order.

We prove two conjectures of Shareshian and Wachs about Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and polynomials. The first states that the cycle type Eulerian quasisymmetric function $Q_{λ,j}$ is Schur-positive, and moreover that the sequence $Q_{λ,j}$ as $j$ varies is Schur-unimodal. The second conjecture, which we prove using the first, states that the cycle type $(q,p)$-Eulerian polynomial \newline $A_λ^{\maj,\des,\exc}(q,p,q^{-1}t)$ is $t$-unimodal.
Differences of Augmented Staircase Skew Schur Functions
We define a fat staircase to be a Ferrers diagram corresponding to a partition of the form $(n^{α_n}, {n-1}^{α_{n-1}},..., 1^{α_1})$, where $α= (α_1,...,α_n)$ is a composition, or the $180^\circ$ rotation of such a diagram. We look at collections of skew diagrams consisting of a fixed fat staircase augmented with all hooks of a given size. Among these diagrams we determine precisely which pairs give a Schur-positive difference. We extend this classification to collections of fat staircases augmented with hook-complements.
Differences of Skew Schur Functions of Staircases with Transposed Foundations
We consider the skew diagram $Δ_n$, which is the $180^\circ$ rotation of the staircase diagram $δ_n = (n,n-1,n-2,...,2,1)$. We create a staircase with bad foundation by augmenting $Δ_n$ with another skew diagram, which we call the \textit{foundation}. We consider pairs of staircases with bad foundation whose foundations are transposes of one another. Among these pairs, we show that the difference of the corresponding skew Schur functions is Schur-positive in the case when one of the foundations consists of either a one or two row diagram, or a hook diagram.

We suggest the point of view that the Schubert classes of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group should be considered as Schur-positive symmetric functions. In particular, we give a geometric explanation of the Schur positivity of k-Schur functions (at t = 1). We also put this in the context of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in showing that certain conditions on skew shapes A and B are sufficient for the difference s_A - s_B of their skew Schur functions to be Schur-positive. We determine necessary conditions for the difference to be Schur-positive. Our conditions are motivated by those of Reiner, Shaw and van Willigenburg that are necessary for s_A = s_B, and we deduce a strengthening of their result as a special case.
Some positive differences of products of Schur functions
The product $s_μs_ν$ of two Schur functions is one of the most famous examples of a Schur-positive function, i.e. a symmetric function which, when written as a linear combination of Schur functions, has all positive coefficients.
We ask when expressions of the form $s_λs_ρ- s_μs_ν$ are Schur-positive. This general question seems to be a difficult one, but a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li and Poon says that it is the case at least when $λ$ and $ρ$ are obtained from $μ$ and $ν$ by redistributing the parts of $μ$ and $ν$ in a specific, yet natural, way. We show that their conjecture is true in several significant cases. We also formulate a skew-shape extension of their conjecture, and prove several results which serve as evidence in favor of this extension. Finally, we take a more global view by studying two classes of partially ordered sets suggested by these questions.
Cylindric skew Schur functions

Cylindric skew Schur functions, which are a generalisation of skew Schur functions, arise naturally in the study of P-partitions. Also, recent work of A. Postnikov shows they have a strong connection with a problem of considerable current interest: that of finding a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants. After explaining these motivations, we study cylindric skew Schur functions from the point of view of Schur-positivity. Using a result of I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler, we generalise a formula of A. Bertram, I. Ciocan-Fontanine and W. Fulton, thus giving an expansion of an arbitrary cylindric skew Schur function in terms of skew Schur functions. While we show that no non-trivial cylindric skew Schur functions are Schur-positive, we conjecture that this can be reconciled using the new concept of cylindric Schur-positivity.

We consider the problem of embedding the semi-ring of Schur-positive symmetric polynomials into its analogue for the classical types $B/C/D$. If we preserve highest weights and add the additional Lie-theoretic parity assumption that the weights in images of Schur functions lie in a single translate of the root lattice, there are exactly two solutions. These naturally extend the Kirillov--Reshetikhin decompositions of representations of symplectic and orthogonal quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ (some still conjectural, some recently proven).
