A Schur-positivity classification for complete multipartite graphs
A graph is Schur-positive if its chromatic symmetric function expands non-negatively in the Schur basis. We determine a full Schur-positivity classification for complete multipartite graphs by showing that a complete multipartite graph $K_λ$ is Schur-positive if and only if either $λ_i\in \{1,2\}$ for all $i$ or $λ=(3,2^β)$ for some $β\ge 1$. These results extend earlier classifications for complete bipartite and complete tripartite graphs to full generality. Our proofs combine structural arguments ruling out most cases, with a combinatorial analysis of Schur coefficients for the remaining family $K_{(3,2^β)}$ via special rim hook $G$-tabloids. Along the way, we establish a simpler formula for Schur coefficients of incomparability graphs, which we then apply to compute the coefficients of interest in terms of non-increasing sequences.
Linear extensions and directed clique counts via modular partitions
Counting linear extensions is a fundamental problem in poset theory. It is known to be #P-complete, with polynomial-time formulas available in special cases. In this work, we develop new recursive formulas for counting linear extensions of posets whose modular partitions have particular structure. Specifically, we focus on posets whose incomparability graph has a modular partition with a skeleton that is a tree, a necklace of cliques, or a combination of both. The proofs are constructive and allow for the explicit generation of all linear extensions. We also discuss equivalent formulations of the problem in terms of permutations and directed graphs. The directed graph perspective is related to counting directed simplices in the directed flag complex of a digraph, with applications to understanding higher-order structure in neural circuits.

In arXiv:2301.02177, Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl defined the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$ as a $K$-analogue of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function $X_G$, and one question they asked was how $\overline{X}_G$ expands in their $\overline{p}_λ$ basis, which they defined as a $K$-analogue of the classic power sum basis $p_λ.$ In arXiv:2408.01395, we gave a formula that partially answered this question but did not explain the combinatorial significance of the coefficients. Here, we give combinatorial descriptions for the $\overline{p}$-coefficients of $\overline{X}_G$ and $ω(\overline{X}_G)$, lifting the $p$-expansion of $X_G$ in terms of acyclic orientations that was given by Bernardi and Nadeau in arXiv:1904.01262. We also propose an alternative $K$-analogue $\overline{p}'$ of the $p$-basis that gives slightly cleaner expansion formulas. Our expansions are based on Lyndon heaps, introduced by Lalonde (1995), which are representatives for certain equivalence classes of acyclic orientations on clan graphs of $G$. Additionally, we show that knowing $\overline{X}_G$ is equivalent to knowing the multiset of independence polynomials of induced subgraphs of $G$, which gives shorter proofs of all our results from arXiv:2403.15929 that $\overline{X}_G$ can be used to determine the number of copies in $G$ of certain induced subgraphs. We also give power sum expansions for the Kromatic quasisymmetric function $\overline{X}_G(q)$ defined by Marberg in arXiv:2312.16474 in the case where $G$ is the incomparability graph of a unit interval order.
Clique density vs blowups
A well-known theorem of Nikiforov asserts that any graph with a positive $K_{r}$-density contains a logarithmic blowup of $K_r$. In this paper, we explore variants of Nikiforov's result in the following form. Given $r,t\in\mathbb{N}$, when a positive $K_{r}$-density implies the existence of a significantly larger (with almost linear size) blowup of $K_t$? Our results include:
For an $n$-vertex ordered graph $G$ with no induced monotone path $P_{6}$, if its complement $\overline{G}$ has positive triangle density, then $\overline{G}$ contains a biclique of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}})$. This strengthens a recent result of Pach and Tomon. For general $k$, let $g(k)$ be the minimum $r\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for any $n$-vertex ordered graph $G$ with no induced monotone $P_{2k}$, if $\overline{G}$ has positive $K_r$-density, then $\overline{G}$ contains a biclique of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}})$. Using concentration of measure and the isodiametric inequality on high dimensional spheres, we provide constructions showing that, surprisingly, $g(k)$ grows quadratically. On the other hand, we relate the problem of upper bounding $g(k)$ to a certain Ramsey problem and determine $g(k)$ up to a factor of 2.
Any incomparability graph with positive $K_{r}$-density contains a blowup of $K_r$ of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}}).$ This confirms a conjecture of Tomon in a stronger form. In doing so, we obtain a strong regularity type lemma for incomparability graphs with no large blowups of a clique, which is of independent interest.
We also prove that any $r$-comparability graph with positive $K_{(2h-2)^{r}+1}$-density contains a blowup of $K_h$ of size $Ω(n)$, where the constant $(2h-2)^{r}+1$ is optimal. The $\frac{n}{\log n}$ size of the blowups in all our results are optimal up to a constant factor.
Stanley's conjecture on the Schur positivity of distributive lattices
In this paper we solve an open problem on distributive lattices, which was proposed by Stanley in 1998. This problem was motivated by a conjecture due to Griggs, which equivalently states that the incomparability graph of the boolean algebra $B_n$ is nice. Stanley introduced the idea of studying the nice property of a graph by investigating the Schur positivity of its corresponding chromatic symmetric functions. Since the boolean algebras form a special class of distributive lattices, Stanley raised the question of whether the incomparability graph of any distributive lattice is Schur positive. Stanley further noted that this seems quite unlikely. In this paper, we construct a family of distributive lattices which are not nice and hence not Schur positive. We also provide a family of distributive lattices which are nice but not Schur positive.

We provide a construction for the kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$ of a graph introduced by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl using combinatorial (linearly compact) Hopf algebras. As an application, we show that $\overline{X}_G$ has a positive expansion into multifundamental quasisymmetric functions. We also study two related quasisymmetric $q$-analogues of $\overline{X}_G$, which are $K$-theoretic generalizations of the quasisymmetric chromatic function of Shareshian and Wachs. We classify exactly when one of these analogues is symmetric. For the other, we derive a positive expansion into symmetric Grothendieck functions when $G$ is the incomparability graph of a natural unit interval order.
Chromatic functions, interval orders and increasing forests
The chromatic quasisymmetric functions (csf) of Shareshian and Wachs associated to unit interval orders have attracted a lot of interest since their introduction in 2016, both in combinatorics and geometry, because of their relation to the famous Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) and to the topology of Hessenberg varieties, respectively. In the present work we study the csf associated to the larger class of interval orders with no restriction on the length of the intervals. Inspired by an article of Abreu and Nigro, we show that these csf are weighted sums of certain quasisymmetric functions associated to the increasing spanning forests of the associated incomparability graphs. Furthermore, we define quasisymmetric functions that include the unicellular LLT symmetric functions and generalize an identity due to Carlsson and Mellit. Finally we conjecture a formula giving their expansion in the type 1 power sum quasisymmetric functions which should extend a theorem of Athanasiadis.

Cover-Incomparability graphs (C-I graphs) are an interesting class of graphs from posets. A C-I graph is a graph from a poset $P=(V,\le)$ with vertex set $V$, and the edge-set is the union of edge sets of the cover graph and the incomparability graph of the poset. The recognition of the C-I graphs is known to be NP-complete (Maxová et al., Order 26(3), 229--236(2009)). In this paper, we prove that chordal graphs having at most two independent simplicial vertices are exactly the chordal graphs which are also C-I graphs. A similar result is obtained for cographs as well. Using the structural results of these graphs, we derive linear time recognition algorithms for chordal graphs and cographs which are C-I graphs.
The Aharoni--Korman conjecture for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite
Aharoni and Korman (Order 9 (1992) 245--253) have conjectured that every ordered set without infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for $(3 + 1)$-free posets with no infinite antichains.
The Kromatic Symmetric Function: A $K$-theoretic Analogue of $X_G$

Schur functions are a basis of the symmetric function ring that represent Schubert cohomology classes for Grassmannians. Replacing the cohomology ring with $K$-theory yields a rich combinatorial theory of inhomogeneous deformations, where Schur functions are replaced by their $K$-analogues, the basis of symmetric Grothendieck functions. We introduce and initiate a theory of the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$, a $K$-theoretic analogue of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$. The Kromatic symmetric function is a generating series for graph colorings in which vertices may receive any nonempty set of distinct colors such that neighboring color sets are disjoint.
Our main result lifts a theorem of Gasharov (1996) to this setting, showing that when $G$ is a claw-free incomparability graph, $\overline{X}_G$ is a positive sum of symmetric Grothendieck functions. This result suggests a topological interpretation of Gasharov's theorem. We then show that the Kromatic symmetric functions of path graphs are not positive in any of several $K$-analogues of the $e$-basis of symmetric functions, demonstrating that the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) does not have such a lift to $K$-theory and so is unlikely to be amenable to a topological perspective. We also define a vertex-weighted extension of $\overline{X}_G$ and show that it admits a deletion--contraction relation. Finally, we give a $K$-analogue for $\overline{X}_G$ of the classic monomial-basis expansion of $X_G$.
e-basis Coefficients of Chromatic Symmetric Functions
A well-known result of Stanley's shows that given a graph $G$ with chromatic symmetric function expanded into the basis of elementary symmetric functions as $X_G = \sum c_λe_λ$, the sum of the coefficients $c_λ$ for $λ$ with $λ_1' = k$ (equivalently those $λ$ with exactly $k$ parts) is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with exactly $k$ sinks.
However, more is known. The sink sequence of an acyclic orientation of $G$ is a tuple $(s_1,\dots,s_k)$ such that $s_1$ is the number of sinks of the orientation, and recursively each $s_i$ with $i > 1$ is the number of sinks remaining after deleting the sinks contributing to $s_1,\dots,s_{i-1}$. Equivalently, the sink sequence gives the number of vertices at each level of the poset induced by the acyclic orientation.
A lesser-known follow-up result of Stanley's determines certain cases in which we can find a sum of $e$-basis coefficients that gives the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with a given partial sink sequence. Of interest in its own right, this result also admits as a corollary a simple proof of the $e$-positivity of $X_G$ when the stability number of $G$ is $2$.
In this paper, we prove a vertex-weighted generalization of this follow-up result, and conjecture a stronger version that admits a similar combinatorial interpretation for a much larger set of $e$-coefficient sums of chromatic symmetric functions. In particular, the conjectured formula would give a combinatorial interpretation for the sum of the coefficients $c_λ$ with prescribed values of $λ_1'$ and $λ_2'$ for any unweighted claw-free graph (not necessarily an incomparability graph, as in the setting of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture).

For a natural unit interval order $P$, we describe proper colorings of the incomparability graph of $P$ in the language of heaps. We also introduce a combinatorial operation, called a \emph{local flip}, on the heaps. This operation defines an equivalence relation on the proper colorings, and the equivalence relation refines the ascent statistic introduced by Shareshian and Wachs.
In addition, we define an analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions introduced by Fomin and Greene, with respect to $P$. We establish a duality between the chromatic quasisymmetric function of $P$ and these noncommutative symmetric functions. This duality leads us to positive expansions of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions into several symmetric function bases. In particular, we present some partial results for the $e$-positivity conjecture.
A Crystal Analysis of $P$-Arrays
Gasharov introduced the combinatorial objects known as $P$-arrays to prove $s$-positivity for the chromatic symmetric functions of incomparability graphs of (3+1)-free posets. We define a crystal, a directed colored graph with some additional axioms, on the set of $P$-arrays. The components of the crystal have $s$-positive characters, thereby refining the $s$-positivity theorems of Gasharov, as well as Shareshian and Wachs. The crystal hints at a possible generalization of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence applied to $P$-arrays.

Chromatic symmetric functions are well-studied symmetric functions in algebraic combinatorics that generalize the chromatic polynomial and are related to Hessenberg varieties and diagonal harmonics. Motivated by the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, we show that the allowable coloring weights for indifference graphs of Dyck paths are the lattice points of a permutahedron $\mathcal{P}_λ$, and we give a formula for the dominant weight $λ$. Furthermore, we conjecture that such chromatic symmetric functions are Lorentzian, a property introduced by Brändén and Huh as a bridge between discrete convex analysis and concavity properties in combinatorics, and we prove this conjecture for abelian Dyck paths. We extend our results on the Newton polytope to incomparability graphs of (3+1)-free posets, and we give a number of conjectures and results stemming from our work, including results on the complexity of computing the coefficients and relations with the $ζ$ map from diagonal harmonics.

This paper is a contribution to the study of hereditary classes of relational structures, these classes being quasi-ordered by embeddability. It deals with the specific case of ordered sets of width two and the corresponding bichains and incomparability graphs.
Several open problems about hereditary classes of relational structures which have been considered over the years have positive answer in this case. For example, well-quasi-ordered hereditary classes of finite bipartite permutation graphs, respectively finite 321-avoiding permutations, have been characterized by Korpelainen, Lozin and Mayhill, respectively by Albert, Brignall, Ruškuc and Vatter.
We provide another proof of the results mentioned above. It is based on the existence of a countable universal poset of width two, obtained by the first author in 1978, his notion of multichainability (1978) (a kind of analog to letter-graphs), and metric properties of incomparability graphs. Using Laver's theorem (1971) on better-quasi-ordering (bqo) of countable chains we prove that a wqo hereditary class of finite or countable bipartite permutation graphs is necessarily bqo. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Nash-Williams (1965) in this case. We extend a previous result of Albert et al. by proving that if a hereditary class of finite, respectively countable, bipartite permutation graphs is wqo, respectively bqo, then the corresponding hereditary classes of posets of width at most two and bichains are wqo, respectively bqo.
Several notions of labelled wqo are also considered. We prove that they are all equivalent in the case of bipartite permutation graphs, posets of width at most two and the corresponding bichains. We characterize hereditary classes of finite bipartite permutation graphs which remain wqo when labels from a wqo are added.

We describe some metric properties of incomparability graphs. We consider the problem of the existence of infinite paths, either induced or isometric, in the incomparability graph of a poset. Among other things, we show that if the incomparability graph of a poset is connected and has infinite diameter, then it contains an infinite induced path. Furthermore, if the diameter of the set of vertices of degree at least $3$ is infinite, then the graph contains as an induced subgraph either a comb or a kite.
Reconfiguring Independent Sets on Interval Graphs
We study reconfiguration of independent sets in interval graphs under the token sliding rule. We show that if two independent sets of size $k$ are reconfigurable in an $n$-vertex interval graph, then there is a reconfiguration sequence of length $\mathcal{O}(k\cdot n^2)$. We also provide a construction in which the shortest reconfiguration sequence is of length $Ω(k^2\cdot n)$.
As a counterpart to these results, we also establish that $\textsf{Independent Set Reconfiguration}$ is PSPACE-hard on incomparability graphs, of which interval graphs are a special case.

Let $P$ be a poset, $inc(P)$ its incomparability graph, and $X_{inc(P)}$ the corresponding chromatic symmetric function, as defined by Stanley in {\em Adv. Math.}, {\bf 111} (1995) pp.~166--194. Certain conditions on $P$ imply that the expansions of $X_{inc(P)}$ in standard symmetric function bases yield coefficients which have simple combinatorial interpretations. By expressing these coefficients as character evaluations, we extend several of these interpretations to {\em all} posets $P$. Consequences include new combinatorial interpretations of the permanent and other immanants of totally nonnegative matrices, and of the sum of elementary coefficients in the Shareshian-Wachs chromatic quasisymmetric function $X_{inc(P),q}$ when $P$ is a unit interval order.

Enumerating minimal transversals in a hypergraph is a notoriously hard problem. It can be reduced to enumerating minimal dominating sets in a graph, in fact even to enumerating minimal dominating sets in an incomparability graph. We provide an output-polynomial time algorithm for incomparability graphs whose underlying posets have bounded dimension. Through a different proof technique, we also provide an output-polynomial algorithm for their complements, i.e., for comparability graphs of bounded dimension posets.
Our algorithm for incomparability graphs is based on flashlight search and relies on the geometrical representation of incomparability graphs with bounded dimension, as given by Golumbic et al. in 1983. It runs with polynomial delay and only needs polynomial space. Our algorithm for comparability graphs is based on the flipping method introduced by Golovach et al. in 2015. It performs in incremental-polynomial time and requires exponential space.
In addition, we show how to improve the flipping method so that it requires only polynomial space. Since the flipping method is a key tool for the best known algorithms enumerating minimal dominating sets in a number of graph classes, this yields direct improvements on the state of the art.

Motivated by Stanley's conjecture about the $e$-positivity of claw-free incomparability graphs, Hamel and her collaborators studied the $e$-positivity of $(claw, H)$-free graphs, where $H$ is a four-vertex graph. In this paper we establish the $e$-positivity of generalized pyramid graphs and $2K_2$-free unit interval graphs, which are two important families of $(claw, 2K_2)$-free graphs. Hence we affirmatively solve one problem proposed by Hamel, Hoàng and Tuero, and another problem considered by Foley, Hoàng and Merkel.
