We give a proof of Stanley-Stembridge conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions for the class of all unit interval graphs with independence number 3. That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.
Linear-semiorders and their incomparability graphs
A linear-interval order is the intersection of a linear order and an interval order. For this class of orders, several structural results have been known. This paper introduces a new subclass of linear-interval orders. We call a partial order a \emph{linear-semiorder} if it is the intersection of a linear order and a semiorder. We show a characterization and a polynomial-time recognition algorithm for linear-semiorders. We also prove that being a linear-semiorder is a comparability invariant, showing that incomparability graphs of linear-semiorders can be recognized in polynomial time.

In the mid-1990s, Stanley and Stembridge conjectured that the chromatic symmetric functions of claw-free co-comparability (also called incomparability) graphs were e-positive. The quest for the proof of this conjecture has led to an examination of other, related graph classes. In 2013 Guay-Paquet proved that if unit interval graphs are e-positive, that implies claw-free incomparability graphs are as well. Inspired by this approach, we consider a related case and prove that unit interval graphs whose complement is also a unit interval graph are e-positive. We introduce the concept of strongly $e$-positive to denote a graph whose induced subgraphs are all e-positive, and conjecture that a graph is strongly e-positive if and only if it is (claw, net)-free.
Strong Pseudo Transitivity and Intersection Graphs
A directed graph $G=(V,E)$ is {\it strongly pseudo transitive} if there is a partition $\{A,E-A\}$ of $E$ so that graphs $G_1=(V,A)$ and $G_2=(V,E-A)$ are transitive, and additionally, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E $ implies that $ac\in E$. A strongly pseudo transitive graph $G=(V,E)$ is strongly pseudo transitive of the first type, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E$ implies $ac\in A$. An undirected graph is co-strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type) if its complement has an orientation which is strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type). Our purpose is show that the results in computational geometry \cite{CFP, Lu} and intersection graph theory \cite{Ga2, ES} can be unified and extended, using the notion of strong pseudo transitivity. As a consequence the general algorithmic framework in \cite{Sh} is applicable to solve the maximum independent set in $O(n^3)$ time in a variety of problems, thereby, avoiding case by case lengthily arguments for each problem. We show that the intersection graphs of axis parallel rectangles intersecting a diagonal line from bottom, and half segments are co-strongly pseudo transitive. In addition, we show that the class of the interval filament graphs is co-strongly transitive of the first type, and hence the class of polygon circle graphs which is contained in the class of interval filament graphs (but contains the classes of chordal graphs, circular arc, circle, and outer planar graphs), and the class of incomparability graphs are strongly transitive of the first type. For class of chordal graphs we give two different proofs, using two different characterizations, verifying that they are co-strongly transitive of the first type. We present some containment results.

For a clique cover $C$ in the undirected graph $G$, the {\it clique cover graph} of $C$ is the graph obtained by contracting the vertices of each clique in $C$ into a single vertex. The {\it clique cover width} of $G$, denoted by $CCW(G)$, is the minimum value of the bandwidth of all clique cover graphs in $G$. Any $G$ with $CCW(G)=1$ is known to be an incomparability graph, and hence is called, a {\it unit incomparability graph}. We introduced the {\it unit incomparability dimension of $G$}, denoted by$Udim(G)$, to be the smallest integer $d$ so that there are unit incomparability graphs $H_i$ with $V(H_i)=V(G), i=1,2,...,d$, so that $E(G)=\cap_{i=1}^d E(G_i)$. We prove a decomposition theorem establishing the inequality $Udim(G)\le CCW(G)$. Specifically, given any $G$, there are unit incomparability graphs $H_1,H_2,...,H_{CC(W)}$ with $V(H_i)=V(G)$ so that and $E(G)=\cap_{i=1}^{CCW} E(H_i)$. In addition, $H_i$ is co-bipartite, for $i=1,2,...,CCW(G)-1$. Furthermore, we observe that $CCW(G)\ge s(G)/2-1$, where $s(G)$ is the number of leaves in a largest induced star of $G$ , and use Ramsey Theory to give an upper bound on $s(G)$, when $G$ is represented as an intersection graph using our decomposition theorem. Finally, when $G$ is an incomparability graph we prove that $CCW (G)\le s(G)-1$.
Largest reduced neighborhood clique cover number revisited

Let $G$ be a graph and $t\ge 0$. The largest reduced neighborhood clique cover number of $G$, denoted by ${\hatβ}_t(G)$, is the largest, overall $t$-shallow minors $H$ of $G$, of the smallest number of cliques that can cover any closed neighborhood of a vertex in $H$. It is known that ${\hatβ}_t(G)\le s_t$, where $G$ is an incomparability graph and $s_t$ is the number of leaves in a largest $t-$shallow minor which is isomorphic to an induced star on $s_t$ leaves. In this paper we give an overview of the properties of ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ including the connections to the greatest reduced average density of $G$, or $\bigtriangledown_t(G)$, introduce the class of graphs with bounded neighborhood clique cover number, and derive a simple lower and an upper bound for this important graph parameter. We announce two conjectures, one for the value of ${\hatβ}_t(G)$, and another for a separator theorem (with respect to a certain measure) for an interesting class of graphs, namely the class of incomparability graphs which we suspect to have a polynomial bounded neighborhood clique cover number, when the size of a largest induced star is bounded.
On the largest reduced neighborhood clique cover number of a graph

Let $G$ be a graph and $t\ge 0$. A new graph parameter termed the largest reduced neighborhood clique cover number of $G$, denoted by ${\hatβ}_t(G)$, is introduced. Specifically, ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ is the largest, overall $t$-shallow minors $H$ of $G$, of the smallest number of cliques that can cover any closed neighborhood of a vertex in $H$. We verify that ${\hatβ}_t(G)=1$ when $G$ is chordal, and, ${\hatβ}_t(G)\le s$, where $G$ is an incomparability graph that does not have a $t-$shallow minor which is isomorphic to an induced star on $s$ leaves. Moreover, general properties of ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ including the connections to the greatest reduced average density of $G$, or $\bigtriangledown_t(G)$ are studied and investigated. For instance we show ${{\hatβ}_t(G)\over 2}\le \bigtriangledown_t(G)\le p.{\hatβ}_t(G),$ where $p$ is the size of a largest complete graph which is a $t-minor$ of $G$. Additionally we prove that largest ratio of any minimum clique cover to the maximum independent set taken overall $t-$minors of $G$ is a lower bound for ${\hatβ}_t(G)$. We further introduce the class of bounded neighborhood clique cover number for which ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ has a finite value for each $t\ge 0$ and verify the membership of geometric intersection graphs of fat objects (with no restrictions on the depth) to this class. The results support the conjecture that the class graphs with polynomial bounded neighborhood clique cover number may have separator theorems with respect to certain measures.

An interval $k$-graph is the intersection graph of a family $\mathcal{I}$ of intervals of the real line partitioned into at most $k$ classes with vertices adjacent if and only if their corresponding intervals intersect and belong to different classes. In this paper we discuss the interval $k$-graphs that are the incomparability graphs of orders; i.e., cocomparability interval $k$-graphs or interval $k$-orders. Interval $2$-orders have been characterized in many ways, but we show that analogous characterizations do not carry over to interval $k$-orders, for $k > 2$. We describe the structure of interval $k$-orders, for any $k$, characterize the interval $3$-orders (cocomparability interval $3$-graphs) via one forbidden suborder (subgraph), and state a conjecture for interval $k$-orders (any $k$) that would characterize them via two forbidden suborders.

Motivated by a 1993 conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge, Shareshian and Wachs conjectured that the characteristic map takes the dot action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to $ωX_G(t)$, where $X_G(t)$ is the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph $G$ of the corresponding natural unit interval order, and $ω$ is the usual involution on symmetric functions. We prove the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture. Our proof uses the local invariant cycle theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne to obtain a surjection from the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety of Jordan type $λ$ to a space of local invariant cycles; as $λ$ ranges over all partitions, these spaces collectively contain all the information about the dot action on a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. Using a palindromicity argument, we show that in our case the surjections are actually isomorphisms, thus reducing the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture to computing the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety. But this cohomology has already been described combinatorially by Tymoczko; we give a bijective proof (using a generalization of a combinatorial reciprocity theorem of Chow) that Tymoczko's combinatorial description coincides with the combinatorics of the chromatic quasisymmetric function.
Asymmetric coloring games on incomparability graphs

Consider the following game on a graph $G$: Alice and Bob take turns coloring the vertices of $G$ properly from a fixed set of colors; Alice wins when the entire graph has been colored, while Bob wins when some uncolored vertices have been left. The game chromatic number of $G$ is the minimum number of colors that allows Alice to win the game. The game Grundy number of $G$ is defined similarly except that the players color the vertices according to the first-fit rule and they only decide on the order in which it is applied. The $(a,b)$-game chromatic and Grundy numbers are defined likewise except that Alice colors $a$ vertices and Bob colors $b$ vertices in each round. We study the behavior of these parameters for incomparability graphs of posets with bounded width. We conjecture a complete characterization of the pairs $(a,b)$ for which the $(a,b)$-game chromatic and Grundy numbers are bounded in terms of the width of the poset; we prove that it gives a necessary condition and provide some evidence for its sufficiency. We also show that the game chromatic number is not bounded in terms of the Grundy number, which answers a question of Havet and Zhu.

The chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph was introduced by Shareshian and Wachs as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. An explicit combinatorial formula, conjectured by Shareshian and Wachs, expressing the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph of a natural unit interval order in terms of power sum symmetric functions, is proven. The proof uses a formula of Roichman for the irreducible characters of the symmetric group.
Chromatic quasisymmetric functions
We introduce a quasisymmetric refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. We derive refinements of both Gasharov's Schur-basis expansion of the chromatic symmetric function and Chow's expansion in Gessel's basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We present a conjectural refinement of Stanley's power sum basis expansion, which we prove in special cases. We describe connections between the chromatic quasisymmetric function and both the $q$-Eulerian polynomials introduced in our earlier work and, conjecturally, representations of symmetric groups on cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties, which have been studied by Tymoczko and others. We discuss an approach, using the results and conjectures herein, to the $e$-positivity conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge for incomparability graphs of $(3+1)$-free posets.

The chromatic symmetric function of a graph is a generalization of the chromatic polynomial. The key motivation for studying the structure of a chromatic symmetric function is to answer positivity conjectures by Stanley in 1995 and Gasharov in 1996. As a symmetric function one can write the chromatic symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. In this paper we address the positivity of the Schur coefficients when the parameter of the Schur function is a hook shape. Furthermore, when a graph is the incomparability graph of a poset with specific properties we construct a correspondence between acyclic orientations of the graph and P-tableaux with a hook shape.
Poset Entropy versus Number of Linear Extensions: the Width-$2$ Case

Kahn and Kim (J. Comput. Sci., 1995) have shown that for a finite poset $P$, the entropy of the incomparability graph of $P$ (normalized by multiplying by the order of $P$) and the base-$2$ logarithm of the number of linear extensions of $P$ are within constant factors from each other. The tight constant for the upper bound was recently shown to be $2$ by Cardinal, Fiorini, Joret, Jungers and Munro (STOC 2010, Combinatorica). Here, we refine this last result in case $P$ has width $2$: we show that the constant can be replaced by $2-\varepsilon$ if one also takes into account the number of connected components of size $2$ in the incomparability graph of $P$. Our result leads to a better upper bound for the number of comparisons in algorithms for the problem of sorting under partial information.

Cut ideals, introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant, are used in phylogenetics and algebraic statistics. We study the minimal free resolutions of cut ideals of tree graphs. By employing basic methods from topological combinatorics, we obtain upper bounds for the Betti numbers of this type of ideals. These take the form of simple formulas on the number of vertices, which arise from the enumeration of induced subgraphs of certain incomparability graphs associated to the edge sets of trees.
Enumeration of paths and cycles and e-coefficients of incomparability graphs
We prove that the number of Hamiltonian paths on the complement of an acyclic digraph is equal to the number of cycle covers. As an application, we obtain a new expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of incomparability graphs in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Analysis of some of the combinatorial implications of this expansion leads to three bijections involving acyclic orientations.
A note on a combinatorial interpretation of the e-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function
Stanley has studied a symmetric function generalization X_G of the chromatic polynomial of a graph G. The innocent-looking Stanley-Stembridge Poset Chain Conjecture states that the expansion of X_G in terms of elementary symmetric functions has nonnegative coefficients if G is a clawfree incomparability graph. Here we give a combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients by combining Gasharov's work on the conjecture with Egecioglu and Remmel's combinatorial interpretation of the inverse Kostka matrix. This gives a new proof of a partial nonnegativity result of Stanley. As an interesting byproduct we derive a previously unnoticed result relating acyclic orientations to P-tableaux.
