Positivity properties of $q$-hit numbers in the finite general linear group
We consider the problem of counting matrices over a finite field with fixed rank and support contained in a fixed set. The count of such matrices gives a $q$-analogue of the classical rook and hit numbers, known as the $q$-rook and $q$-hit numbers. They are known not to be polynomial in $q$ in general. We use inclusion-exclusion on the support of the matrices and the orbit counting method of Lewis et al. to show that the residues of these functions in low degrees are polynomial. We define a generalization of the classical rook and hit numbers which count placements of certain classes of graphs. These give us a formula for residues of the $q$-rook and $q$-hit numbers in low degrees. We analyze the residues of the $q$-hit number and show that the coefficient of $q-1$ in the $q$-hit number is always non-negative.
Sign patterns of principal minors of real symmetric matrices
We analyze a combinatorial rule satisfied by the signs of principal minors of a real symmetric matrix. The sign patterns satisfying this rule are equivalent to uniform oriented Lagrangian matroids. We first discuss their structure and symmetries and then study their asymptotics, proving that almost all of them are not representable by real symmetric matrices. We offer several conjectures and experimental results concerning representable sign patterns and the topology of their representation spaces.

We introduce the new sage_acsv package for the SageMath computer algebra system, allowing users to rigorously compute asymptotics for a large variety of multivariate sequences with rational generating functions. Using Sage's support for exact computations over the algebraic number field, this package provides the first rigorous implementation of algorithms from the theory of analytic combinatorics in several variables.

Chromatic symmetric functions are well-studied symmetric functions in algebraic combinatorics that generalize the chromatic polynomial and are related to Hessenberg varieties and diagonal harmonics. Motivated by the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture, we show that the allowable coloring weights for indifference graphs of Dyck paths are the lattice points of a permutahedron $\mathcal{P}_λ$, and we give a formula for the dominant weight $λ$. Furthermore, we conjecture that such chromatic symmetric functions are Lorentzian, a property introduced by Brändén and Huh as a bridge between discrete convex analysis and concavity properties in combinatorics, and we prove this conjecture for abelian Dyck paths. We extend our results on the Newton polytope to incomparability graphs of (3+1)-free posets, and we give a number of conjectures and results stemming from our work, including results on the complexity of computing the coefficients and relations with the $ζ$ map from diagonal harmonics.
