Given a square matrix, the permanent is a determinant-like function without signs. In this paper, we study inequalities involving permanents of certain submatrices. We first focus on a family of zero-one totally nonnegative matrices that arise as anti-adjacency matrices of unit interval orders. For these matrices, we prove a collection of inequalities comparing products of permanents of consecutive principal submatrices with products of permanents of parity-selected principal submatrices.
We also study a related combinatorial problem involving two families of permutations: a Young subgroup and a set of parity alternating permutations. We construct a bijective map from the first family to the second family, and verify computationally for n at most 13 that each permutation is below its image in Bruhat order. We conjecture that this property holds for all n. If true, this would imply one of the main permanent inequalities for all totally nonnegative matrices in the balanced case. More broadly, we conjecture that the full family of inequalities holds for all totally nonnegative matrices.
On Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements having no reversal factorization
For $w$ in the symmetric group $S_n$, let $\widetilde C_w$ be the corresponding modified, signless Kazhdan--Lusztig basis element of the type-$A$ Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$. An extension [Ann. Comb. 25, no. 3 (2021) pp. 757--787] of a result of Deodhar [Geom. Dedicata 36, (1990) pp. 95--119] implies that any factorization of the form \begin{equation*}
\widetilde C_w = \frac1{f(q)} \widetilde C_{v^{(1)}} \cdots \widetilde C_{v^{(r)}},
\end{equation*} with $v^{(1)},\dotsc,v^{(r)}$ maximal elements of parabolic subgroups of $S_n$ and $f(q) \in \mathbb N[q]$ depending on these, provides cancellation-free combinatorial interpretations of the polynomials $\{P_{v,w}(q) \,|\, v \in S_n \}$ appearing in the expansion $\sum_v P_{v,w}(q) T_v$ of $\widetilde C_w$ in terms of the natural basis $\{ T_v \,|\, v \in S_n \}$ of $H_n(q)$. While the set of permutations $w \in S_n$ admitting such a factorization of $\widetilde C_w$ has not yet been characterized, we apply a result of Gaetz -- Gao [Adv. Math. 457 (2024) Paper No. 109941] to describe a set admitting no such factorization.
Hook immanantal inequalities for totally nonnegative matrices
Given a weakly decreasing positive integer sequence $λ= (λ_1,\dotsc,λ_\ell)$ summing to $n$, let $χ^λ$ denote the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$ indexed by $λ$. This representation has dimension $χ^λ(e)$, where $e$ is the identity element of $S_n$. Let $\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^λ}$ denote the corresponding irreducible character immanant, the function on $n \times n$ matrices $A = (a_{i,j})$ defined by $\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^λ}(A) := \sum_{w \in S_n} χ^λ(w) a_{1,w_1} \cdots a_{n,w_n}$. Merris conjectured [Linear Multilinear Algebra 14 (1983) pp. 21--35] and Heyfron proved [Linear Multilinear Algebra 24 (1988) pp. 65--78] that irreducible character immanants indexed by ``hook'' sequences $(k, 1, \dotsc, 1)$ satisfy the inequalities $\mathrm{per}(A)=\frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^n}(A)}{χ^{n}(e)}\geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{n-1,1}}(A)}{χ^{n-1,1}(e)}\geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{ n-2,1,1}}(A)}{χ^{n-2,1,1}(e)}\geq \cdots \geq \frac{\mathrm{Imm}_{χ^{1,\dotsc,1}}(A)}{χ^{1,\dotsc,1}(e)}=\det(A)$ whenever $A$ is an $n \times n$ Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix. We prove that the same inequalities hold whenever $A$ is an $n \times n$ totally nonnegative matrix.
A generalization of Deodhar's defect statistic for Iwahori--Hecke algebras of type $BC$
Let $H$ be the Iwahori--Hecke algebra corresponding to any Coxeter group. Deodhar's defect statistic [Geom. Dedicata 36, (1990) pp.95--119] allows one to expand products of simple Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements of $H$ in the natural basis of $H$. Clearwater and the third author gave a type-$A$ extension [Ann. Comb. 25, no. 3 (2021) pp.757--787] of this formula which combinatorially describes the natural expansion of products of Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements indexed by smooth elements of the symmetric group. We similarly give a type-$BC$ extension of Deodhar's result which combinatorially describes the natural expansion of Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements indexed by hyperoctahedral group elements which are simultaneously smooth in types $B$ and $C$.
Permanental inequalities for totally positive matrices
We characterize ratios of permanents of (generalized) submatrices which are bounded on the set of all totally positive matrices. This provides a permanental analog of results of Fallat, Gekhtman, and Johnson [{\em Adv.\ Appl.\ Math.} {\bf 30} no.\ 3, (2003) pp.\ 442--470] concerning ratios of matrix minors. We also extend work of Drake, Gerrish, and the first author [{\em Electron.\ J.\ Combin.,} {\bf 11} no.\ 1, (2004) Note 6] by characterizing the differences of monomials in $\mathbb{Z}[x_{1,1},x_{1,2},...,x_{n,n}]$ which evaluate positively on the set of all totally positive $n \times n$ matrices.
Hyperoctahedral group characters and a type-BC analog of graph coloring
We state combinatorial formulas for hyperoctahedral group ($\mathfrak B_n$) character evaluations of the form $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$, where ${{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1) \in \Bbb Z[\mathfrak B_n]$ is a type-BC Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element, with $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ corresponding to simultaneously smooth type-B and C Schubert varieties. We also extend the definition of symmetric group codominance to elements of $\mathfrak B_n$ and show that for each element $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ above, there exists a BC-codominant element $v \in \mathfrak B_n$ satisfying $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1)) = χ( {{\widetilde C}_v}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for all $\mathfrak B_n$-characters $χ$. Combinatorial structures and maps appearing in these formulas are type-BC extensions of planar networks, unit interval orders, indifference graphs, poset tableaux, and colorings. Using the ring of type-BC symmetric functions, we introduce natural generating functions $Y( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for the above evaluations. These provide a new type-BC analog of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions [Adv. Math. 111 (1995) pp. 166-194].

Given a matrix $A$, let $A_{I,J}$ denote the submatrix of $A$ determined by rows $I$ and columns $J$. Fischer's Inequalities state that for each $n \times n$ Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix $A$, and each subset $I$ of $\{1,\dotsc,n\}$ and its complement $I^c$, we have $\det(A) \leq \det(A_{I,I})\det(A_{I^c,I^c})$. Barrett and Johnson (Linear Multilinear Algebra 34, 1993) extended these to state inequalities for sums of products of principal minors whose orders are given by nonincreasing integer sequences $(λ_1,\dotsc,λ_r)$, $(μ_1,\dotsc,μ_s)$ summing to $n$. Specifically, if $λ_1+\cdots+λ_i\leq μ_1+\cdots+μ_i$ for all $i$, then $$ λ_1!\cdotsλ_r! \sum_{(I_1,\dotsc,I_r)} \det(A_{I_1,I_1}) \cdots \det(A_{I_r,I_r}) ~\geq~
μ_1!\cdotsμ_s!
\sum_{(J_1,\dotsc,J_s)}
\det(A_{J_1,J_1}) \cdots \det(A_{J_s,J_s}), $$ where sums are over sequences of disjoint subsets of $\{1,\dotsc,n\}$ satisfying $|I_k| = λ_k$, $|J_k| = μ_k$. We show that these inequalities hold for totally nonnegative matrices as well.

Let $P$ be a poset, $inc(P)$ its incomparability graph, and $X_{inc(P)}$ the corresponding chromatic symmetric function, as defined by Stanley in {\em Adv. Math.}, {\bf 111} (1995) pp.~166--194. Certain conditions on $P$ imply that the expansions of $X_{inc(P)}$ in standard symmetric function bases yield coefficients which have simple combinatorial interpretations. By expressing these coefficients as character evaluations, we extend several of these interpretations to {\em all} posets $P$. Consequences include new combinatorial interpretations of the permanent and other immanants of totally nonnegative matrices, and of the sum of elementary coefficients in the Shareshian-Wachs chromatic quasisymmetric function $X_{inc(P),q}$ when $P$ is a unit interval order.

Let $\mathfrak S_{[i,j]}$ be the subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$ generated by adjacent transpositions $(i,i+1), \dotsc, (j-1,j)$, assuming $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. We give a combinatorial rule for evaluating induced sign characters of the type-$A$ Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ at all elements of the form $\sum_{w \in \mathfrak S_{[i,j]}} T_w$ and at all products of such elements. This includes evaluation at some elements $C'_w(q)$ of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis.

Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.

We combinatorially describe entries of the transition matrices which relate monomial bases of the zero-weight space of the quantum matrix bialgebra. This description leads to a combinatorial rule for evaluating induced sign characters of the type $A$ Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ at all elements of the form $(1 + T_{s_{i_1}}) \cdots (1 + T_{s_{i_m}})$, including the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements indexed by $321$-hexagon-avoiding permutations. This result is the first subtraction-free rule for evaluating all elements of a basis of the $H_n(q)$-trace space at all elements of a basis of $H_n(q)$.

For irreducible characters $\{ χ_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, induced sign characters $\{ ε_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, and induced trivial characters $\{ η_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$ of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$, and Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements $C'_w(q)$ with $w$ avoiding the patterns 3412 and 4231, we combinatorially interpret the polynomials $χ_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2}C'_w(q))$, $ε_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))$, and $\smash{η_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))}$. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of Shareshian and Wachs, and a new combinatorial interpretation of special cases of results of Haiman. We prove similar results for other $H_n(q)$-traces, and confirm a formula conjectured by Haiman.

A note on Bruhat order and double coset representatives
Let $W$ be a finite coxeter group, let $W_I$, $W_J$ be standard parabolic subgroups, let $u$, $v$ be minimal double cosets representatives of double cosets in $W_I W / W_J$ and let $u'$, $v'$ be the maximal representatives of those same two cosets. We show that $u < v$ if and only if $u' < v'$ for the Bruhat order.
