The unbroken spectra of Frobenius seaweeds
We show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Frobenius seaweed, then the spectrum of the adjoint of a principal element consists of an unbroken set of integers whose multiplicities have a symmetric distribution. Our methods are combinatorial.

Combinatorial index formulas for Lie algebras of seaweed type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Analogous to the types A, B, and C cases, we address the computation of the index of seaweed subalgebras in the type-D case. Formulas for the algebra's index can be computed by counting the connected components of its associated meander. We focus on a set of distinguished vertices of the meander, called the tail of the meander, and using the tail, we provide comprehensive combinatorial formulas for the index of a seaweed in all the classical types. Using these formulas, we provide all general closed-form index formulas where the index is given by a polynomial greatest common divisor formula in the sizes of the parts that define the seaweed.
On compositions associated to seasweed subalgebras of sl(n)
A standard seaweed subalgebra of $A_{n-1}=\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ may be parametrized by a pair of compositions of the positive integer $n$. For all $n$ and certain $k(n)$, we provide closed-form formulas and the generating functions for $C(n,k)$ -- the number of parametrizing pairs which yield a seaweed subalgebra of $\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ of index $k$. Our analysis sets the framework for addressing similar questions in the other classical families.
Evaluations of Hecke algebra traces at Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements

For irreducible characters $\{ χ_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, induced sign characters $\{ ε_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$, and induced trivial characters $\{ η_q^λ\,|\, λ\vdash n \}$ of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$, and Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements $C'_w(q)$ with $w$ avoiding the patterns 3412 and 4231, we combinatorially interpret the polynomials $χ_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2}C'_w(q))$, $ε_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))$, and $\smash{η_q^λ(q^{l(w)/2} C'_w(q))}$. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of Shareshian and Wachs, and a new combinatorial interpretation of special cases of results of Haiman. We prove similar results for other $H_n(q)$-traces, and confirm a formula conjectured by Haiman.

Recurrences for Eulerian polynomials of type B and type D
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce new recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials, and interpret them combinatorially. These recurrences are analogous to a well-known recurrence for the type A Eulerian polynomials. We also discuss their relationship to polynomials introduced by Savage and Visontai in connection to the real-rootedness of the corresponding Eulerian polynomials.

The classification of 231-avoiding permutations by descents and maximum drop
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the number of 231-avoiding permutations with $j$-descents and maximum drop is less than or equal to $k$ which we denote by $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$. We show that $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$ also counts the number of Dyck paths of length $2n$ with $n-j$ peaks and height $\leq k+1$, and the number of ordered trees with $n$ edges, $j+1$ internal nodes, and of height $\leq k+1$. We show that the generating functions for the $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$s with $k$ fixed satisfy a simple recursion. We also use the combinatorics of ordered trees to prove new explicit formulas for $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$ as a function of $n$ in a number of special values of $j$ and $k$ and prove a simple recursion for the $a_{n,231,j}^{(k)}$s.

Descent polynomials for k bubble-sortable permutations of type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the work of Chung, Claesson, Dukes, and Graham, we define a natural type B analog of the classic bubble sort, and use it to define a type B analog of the maximum drop statistic. We enumerate (by explicit, recursive, and generating function formulas) signed permutations with r type B descents and type B maximum drop at most k. We also find a connection between these signed permutations and certain 2-colored juggling sequences.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions for the type B Coxeter group and other wreath product groups
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 48 (2012) 465-505 • View PublicationBIB
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian numbers. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We derive a formula for the generating function of these colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which reduces to a formula of Shareshian and Wachs for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We show that applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of colored permutation statistics, which generalize the Shareshian-Wachs q-analog of Euler's formula, formulas of Foata and Han, and a formula of Chow and Gessel.
