Finite Gelfand Pair Approaches for Ehrenfest Diffusion Model
A classical diffusion model of Ehrenfest which consists of $2$-urns and $n$-balls is realized by a finite Gelfand pair $(H_{n},S_{n})$, where $H_{n}$ is the hyperoctahedral group and $S_{n}$ is the symmetric group. This fact can be generalized to multi-urn version by using Gelfand pairs of complex reflection groups.
Generalized crested products of Markov chains

We define a finite Markov chain, called generalized crested product, which naturally appears as a generalization of the first crested product of Markov chains. A complete spectral analysis is developed and the $k$-step transition probability is given. It is important to remark that this Markov chain describes a more general version of the classical Ehrenfest diffusion model. As a particular case, one gets a generalization of the classical Insect Markov chain defined on the ultrametric space. Finally, an interpretation in terms of representation group theory is given, by showing the correspondence between the spectral decomposition of the generalized crested product and the Gelfand pairs associated with the generalized wreath product of permutation groups.
From Parking Functions to Gelfand Pairs

A pair $(G,K)$ of a group and its subgroup is called a Gelfand pair if the induced trivial representation of $K$ on $G$ is multiplicity free. Let $(a_j)$ be a sequence of positive integers of length $n$, and let $(b_i)$ be its non-decreasing rearrangement. The sequence $(a_i)$ is called a parking function of length $n$ if $b_i \leq i$ for all $i=1,\...,n$.
In this paper we study certain Gelfand pairs in relation with parking functions. In particular, we find explicit descriptions of the decomposition of the associated induced trivial representations into irreducibles. We obtain and study a new $q$ analogue of the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$, $n\geq 1$.

We study symmetric polynomials whose variables are odd-numbered Jucys-Murphy elements. They define elements of the Hecke algebra associated to the Gelfand pair of the symmetric group with the hyperoctahedral group. We evaluate their expansions in zonal spherical functions and in double coset sums. These evaluations are related to integrals of polynomial functions over orthogonal groups. Furthermore, we give an extension of them, based on Jack polynomials.

Association schemes were originally introduced by Bose and his co-workers in the design of statistical experiments. Since that point of inception, the concept has proved useful in the study of group actions, in algebraic graph theory, in algebraic coding theory, and in areas as far afield as knot theory and numerical integration. This branch of the theory, viewed in this collection of surveys as the "commutative case," has seen significant activity in the last few decades. The goal of the present survey is to discuss the most important new developments in several directions, including Gelfand pairs, cometric association schemes, Delsarte Theory, spin models and the semidefinite programming technique. The narrative follows a thread through this list of topics, this being the contrast between combinatorial symmetry and group-theoretic symmetry, culminating in Schrijver's SDP bound for binary codes (based on group actions) and its connection to the Terwilliger algebra (based on combinatorial symmetry). We propose this new role of the Terwilliger algebra in Delsarte Theory as a central topic for future work.
Generalized characters of the symmetric group

Normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric group S(n) can be understood as zonal spherical functions of the Gelfand pair $(S(n)\times S(n),\Diag S(n))$. They form an orthogonal basis in the space of the functions on the group S(n) invariant with respect to conjugations by S(n). In this paper we consider a different Gelfand pair connected with the symmetric group, that is an ``unbalanced'' Gelfand pair $(S(n)\times S(n-1),\Diag S(n-1))$. Zonal spherical functions of this Gelfand pair form an orthogonal basis in a larger space of functions on S(n), namely in the space of functions invariant with respect to conjugations by $S(n-1)$. We refer to these zonal spherical functions as normalized \textit{generalized} characters of S(n). The main discovery of the present paper is that these generalized characters can be computed on the same level as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. The paper gives a Murnaghan-Nakayama type rule, a Frobenius type formula, and an analogue of the determinantal formula for the generalized characters of S(n).
Stein's Method and Random Character Ratios

Stein's method is used to prove limit theorems for random character ratios. Tools are developed for four types of structures: finite groups, Gelfand pairs, twisted Gelfand pairs, and association schemes. As one example an error term is obtained for a central limit theorem of Kerov on the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by i-cycles, or equivalently for the character ratio of a Plancherel distributed representation on an i-cycle. Other main examples include an error term for a central limit theorem of Ivanov on character ratios of random projective representations of the symmetric group, and a new central limit theorem for the spectrum of certain graphs whose vertices are the set of perfect matchings on 2n symbols. The error terms in the resulting limit theorems are typically O(n^{-1/4}) or better. The results are obtained with remarkably little information: a character formula for a single representation close to the trivial representation and estimates on two step transition probabilities of a random walk. Although the limit theorems stated in this paper are all for the case of normal approximation, many of the tools developed are quite general. Indeed, both the construction of an exchangeable pair used for Stein's method and lemmas computing certain moments are useful for arbitrary distributional approximation.
Stein's Method, Jack Measure, and the Metropolis Algorithm

The one parameter family of Jack(alpha) measures on partitions is an important discrete analog of Dyson's beta ensembles of random matrix theory. Except for special values of alpha=1/2,1,2 which have group theoretic interpretations, the Jack(alpha) measure has been difficult if not intractable to analyze. This paper proves a central limit theorem (with an error term) for Jack(alpha) measure which works for arbitrary values of alpha. For alpha=1 we recover a known central limit theorem on the distribution of character ratios of random representations of the symmetric group on transpositions. The case alpha=2 gives a new central limit theorem for random spherical functions of a Gelfand pair. The proof uses Stein's method and has interesting ingredients: an intruiging construction of an exchangeable pair, properties of Jack polynomials, and work of Hanlon relating Jack polynomials to the Metropolis algorithm.
