We investigate permutations in terms of their cycle structure and descent set. To do this, we generalize the classical bijection of Gessel and Reutenauer to deal with permutations that have some ascending and some descending blocks. We then provide the first bijective proofs of some known results. We also solve some problems posed in [3] by Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund, who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths.

We present a bijection between cyclic permutations of {1,2,...,n+1} and permutations of {1,2,...,n} that preserves the descent set of the first n entries and the set of weak excedances. This non-trivial bijection involves a Foata-like transformation on the cyclic notation of the permutation, followed by certain conjugations. We also give an alternate derivation of the consequent result about the equidistribution of descent sets using work of Gessel and Reutenauer. Finally, we prove a conjecture of the author in [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009), 765-786] and a conjecture of Eriksen, Freij and Wästlund.
A diagrammatic representation of an affine $C$ Temperley--Lieb algebra
In this thesis, I present an associative diagram algebra that is a faithful representation of a particular Temperley--Lieb algebra of type affine $C$, which has a basis indexed by the fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group of the same type. The Coxeter group of type affine $C$ contains an infinite number of fully commutative elements, and so the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra is of infinite rank. With the exception of type affine $A$, all other generalized Temperley--Lieb algebras with known diagrammatic representations are of finite rank. In the finite rank case, counting arguments are employed to prove faithfulness, but these techniques are not available in the affine $C$ case. To prove faithfulness, I classify the fully commutative elements in Coxeter groups of types $B$ and affine $C$ that are irreducible under weak star reductions. The classification of these irreducible elements provides the groundwork for inductive arguments that are used to prove faithfulness. The classification of the weak star irreducible elements of type $B$ also verifies C.K. Fan's unproved claim about about the set of fully commutative elements in a Coxeter group of type $B$ having no generator appearing in the left or right descent set that can be left or right cancelled, respectively. The results of this thesis will be used to construct a trace on the Hecke algebra of type affine $C$, which will then be used to compute leading coefficients of certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials in a non-recursive way.
A generalized Major index statistic
Inspired by the $k$-inversion statistic for LLT polynomials, we define a $k$-inversion number and $k$-descent set for words. Using these, we define a new statistic on words, called the $k$-major index, that interpolates between the major index and inversion number. We give a bijective proof that the $k$-major index is equidistributed with the major index, generalizing a classical result of Foata and rediscovering a result of Kadell. Inspired by recent work of Haglund and Stevens, we give a partial extension of these definitions and constructions to standard Young tableaux. Finally, we give an application to Macdonald polynomials made possible through connections with LLT polynomials.

The circular descent of a permutation $σ$ is a set $\{σ(i)\mid σ(i)>σ(i+1)\}$. In this paper, we focus on the enumerations of permutations by the circular descent set. Let $cdes_n(S)$ be the number of permutations of length $n$ which have the circular descent set $S$. We derive the explicit formula for $cdes_n(S)$. We describe a class of generating binary trees $T_k $ with weights. We find that the number of permutations in the set $CDES_n(S)$ corresponds to the weights of $T_k$. As a application of the main results in this paper, we also give the enumeration of permutation tableaux according to their shape.

We consider the inversion enumerator I_n(q), which counts labeled trees or, equivalently, parking functions. This polynomial has a natural extension to generalized parking functions. Substituting q = -1 into this generalized polynomial produces the number of permutations with a certain descent set. In the classical case, this result implies the formula I_n(-1) = E_n, the number of alternating permutations. We give a combinatorial proof of these formulas based on the involution principle. We also give a geometric interpretation of these identities in terms of volumes of generalized chain polytopes of ribbon posets. The volume of such a polytope is given by a sum over generalized parking functions, which is similar to an expression for the volume of the parking function polytope of Pitman and Stanley.

Combinatorial aspects of multivariate diagonal invariants of the symmetric group are studied. As a consequence it is proved the existence of a multivariate extension of the classical Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Further byproduct are a pure combinatorial algorithm to describe the irreducible decomposition of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of the symmetric group, and new symmetry results on permutation enumeration with respect to descent sets.
Variations on Descents and Inversions in Permutations

We study new statistics on permutations that are variations on the descent and the inversion statistics. In particular, we consider the alternating descent set of a permutation sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_n defined as the set of indices i such that either i is odd and sigma_i > sigma_{i+1}, or i is even and sigma_i < sigma_{i+1}. We show that this statistic is equidistributed with the 3-descent set statistic on permutations sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_{n+1} with sigma_1 = 1, defined to be the set of indices i such that the triple sigma_i sigma_{i+1} sigma_{i+2} forms an odd permutation of size 3. We then introduce Mahonian inversion statistics corresponding to the two new variations of descents and show that the joint distributions of the resulting descent-inversion pairs are the same. We examine the generating functions involving alternating Eulerian polynomials, defined by analogy with the classical Eulerian polynomials sum_{sigma in S_n} t^{des(sigma)+1} using alternating descents. For the alternating descent set statistic, we define the generating polynomial in two non-commutative variables by analogy with the ab-index of the Boolean algebra B_n, and make observations about it. By looking at the number of alternating inversions in alternating (down-up) permutations, we obtain a new q-analog of the Euler number E_n and show how it emerges in a q-analog of an identity expressing E_n as a weighted sum of Dyck paths.
Peak Quasisymmetric Functions and Eulerian Enumeration

Via duality of Hopf algebras, there is a direct association between peak quasisymmetric functions and enumeration of chains in Eulerian posets. We study this association explicitly, showing that the notion of $\cd$-index, long studied in the context of convex polytopes and Eulerian posets, arises as the dual basis to a natural basis of peak quasisymmetric functions introduced by Stembridge. Thus Eulerian posets having a nonnegative $\cd$-index (for example, face lattices of convex polytopes) correspond to peak quasisymmetric functions having a nonnegative representation in terms of this basis. We diagonalize the operator that associates the basis of descent sets for all quasisymmetric functions to that of peak sets for the algebra of peak functions, and study the $g$-polynomial for Eulerian posets as an algebra homomorphism.

We extend Stanley's work on alternating permutations with extremal number of fixed points in two directions: first, alternating permutations are replaced by permutations with a prescribed descent set; second, instead of simply counting permutations we study their generating polynomials by number of excedances. Several techniques are used: Desarmenien's desarrangement combinatorics, Gessel's hook-factorization and the analytical properties of two new permutation statistics "DEZ" and "lec". Explicit formulas for the maximal case are derived by using symmetric function tools.

We introduce the notion of the descent set polynomial as an alternative way of encoding the sizes of descent classes of permutations. Descent set polynomials exhibit interesting factorization patterns. We explore the question of when particular cyclotomic factors divide these polynomials. As an instance we deduce that the proportion of odd entries in the descent set statistics in the symmetric group S_n only depends on the number on 1's in the binary expansion of n. We observe similar properties for the signed descent set statistics.
Tableaux combinatorics for the asymmetric exclusion process

The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is $q$ times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability $α$ and exit from the right with probability $β$.
In this paper we prove a close connection between the PASEP and the combinatorics of permutation tableaux. (These tableaux come indirectly from the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian, via work of Postnikov, and were studied in a paper of Steingrimsson and the second author.) Namely, we prove that in the long time limit, the probability that the PASEP is in a particular configuration $τ$ is essentially the generating function for permutation tableaux of shape $λ(τ)$ enumerated according to three statistics. The proof of this result uses a result of Derrida, Evans, Hakim, and Pasquier on the {\it matrix ansatz} for the PASEP model.
As an application, we prove some monotonicity results for the PASEP. We also derive some enumerative consequences for permutations enumerated according to various statistics such as weak excedence set, descent set, crossings, and occurences of generalized patterns.
Properties of four partial orders on standard Young tableaux
Let SYT_n be the set of all standard Young tableaux with n cells. After recalling the definitions of four partial orders, the weak, KL, geometric and chain orders on SYT_n and some of their crucial properties, we prove three main results: (i)Intervals in any of these four orders essentially describe the product in a Hopf algebra of tableaux defined by Poirier and Reutenauer. (ii) The map sending a tableau to its descent set induces a homotopy equivalence of the proper parts of all of these orders on tableaux with that of the Boolean algebra 2^{[n-1]}. In particular, the Möbius function of these orders on tableaux is (-1)^{n-3}. (iii) For two of the four orders, one can define a more general order on skew tableaux having fixed inner boundary, and similarly analyze their homotopy type and Möbius function.
The Descent Set and Connectivity Set of a Permutation
The descent set D(w) of a permutation w of 1,2,...,n is a standard and well-studied statistic. We introduce a new statistic, the connectivity set C(w), and show that it is a kind of dual object to D(w). The duality is stated in terms of the inverse of a matrix that records the joint distribution of D(w) and C(w). We also give a variation involving permutations of a multiset and a q-analogue that keeps track of the number of inversions of w.

Louis Solomon showed that the group algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ has a subalgebra called the descent algebra, generated by sums of permutations with a given descent set. In fact, he showed that every Coxeter group has something that can be called a descent algebra. There is also a commutative, semisimple subalgebra of Solomon's descent algebra generated by sums of permutations with the same number of descents: an "Eulerian" descent algebra. For any Coxeter group that is also a Weyl group, Paola Cellini proved the existence of a different Eulerian subalgebra based on a modified definition of descent. We derive the existence of Cellini's subalgebra for the case of the symmetric group and of the hyperoctahedral group using a variation on Richard Stanley's theory of $P$-partitions.
A bijective proof of an unusual symmetric group generating function
For $σ\in S_n$, let $D(σ) = \{i : σ_{i} > σ_{i+1}\}$ denote the descent set of $σ$. The length of the permutation is the number of inversions, denoted by $inv(σ) = \big | \{(i,j) : i<j, σ_i > σ_j\} \big |$. Define an unusual quadratic statisitic by $baj(σ) = \sum_{i \in D(σ)} i (n-i)$. We present here a bijective proof of the identity $\sum_{{σ\in S_n} \atop {σ(n) = k}} q^{baj(σ) - inv(σ)} = \prod_{i=1}^{n-1} {1-q^{i (n-i)} \over {1-q^i}}$ where $k$ is a fixed integer.
Equidistribution and Sign-Balance on 321-Avoiding Permutations
Let $T_n$ be the set of 321-avoiding permutations of order $n$. Two properties of $T_n$ are proved: (1) The {\em last descent} and {\em last index minus one} statistics are equidistributed over $T_n$, and also over subsets of permutations whose inverse has an (almost) prescribed descent set. An analogous result holds for Dyck paths. (2) The sign-and-last-descent enumerators for $T_{2n}$ and $T_{2n+1}$ are essentially equal to the last-descent enumerator for $T_n$. The proofs use a recursion formula for an appropriate multivariate generating function.
A self-dual poset on objects counted by the Catalan numbers and a type-B analogue
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these permutation posets follow, including self-duality and the strong Sperner property. We also discuss posets $Q^A_n$ and $Q^B_n$ similarly associated with noncrossing partitions, defined by means of the excedence sets of suitable pattern-avoiding subsets of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups.
