Baxter Tree-like Tableaux
Tree-like tableaux are objects in bijection with alternative or permutation tableaux. They have been the subject of a fruitful combinatorial study for the past few years. In the present work, we define and study a new subclass of tree-like tableaux enumerated by Baxter numbers. We exhibit simple bijective links between these objects and three other combinatorial classes: (packed or mosaic) floorplans, twisted Baxter permutations and triples of non-intersecting lattice paths. From several (and unrelated) works, these last objects are already known to be enumerated by Baxter numbers, and our main contribution is to provide a unifying approach to bijections between Baxter objects, where Baxter tree-like tableaux play the key role. We moreover get new enumerative results about alternating twisted Baxter permutations. Finally, we define a new subfamily of floorplans, which we call alternating floorplans, and we enumerate these combinatorial objects.

Block decomposition and statistics arising from permutation tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation statistics $\wnm$ and $\rlm$ are both arising from permutation tableaux. $\wnm$ was introduced by Chen and Zhou, which was proved equally distributed with the number of unrestricted rows of a permutation tableau. While $\rlm$ is showed by Nadeau equally distributed with the number of $1$'s in the first row of a permutation tableau. In this paper, we investigate the joint distribution of $\wnm$ and $\rlm$. Statistic $(\rlm,\wnm,\rlmin,\des,(\underline{321}))$ is shown equally distributed with $(\rlm,\rlmin,\wnm,\des,(\underline{321}))$ on $S_n$. Then the generating function of $(\rlm,\wnm)$ follows. An involution is constructed to explain the symmetric property of the generating function. Also, we study the triple statistic $(\wnm,\rlm,\asc)$, which is shown to be equally distributed with $(\rlmax-1,\rlmin,\asc)$ as studied by Josuat-Verg$\grave{e}$s. The main method we adopt throughout the paper is constructing bijections based on a block decomposition of permutations.
Expected Value of Statistics on Type-B Permutation Tableaux
Type-B permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects introduced by Lam and Williams that have an interesting connection with the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP). In this paper, we compute the expected value of several statistics on these tableaux. Some of these computations are motivated by a similar paper on permutation tableaux. Others are motivated by the PASEP. In particular, we compute the expected number of rows, unrestricted rows, diagonal ones, adjacent south steps, and adjacent west steps.

Distribution of the Number of Corners in Tree--like Tableaux
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux and some of their probabilistic properties. Tree--like tableaux are in bijection with other combinatorial structures, including permutation tableaux, and have a connection to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP), an important model of an interacting particles system. In particular, in the context of tree-like tableaux, a corner corresponds to a node occupied by a particle that could jump to the right while inner corners indicate a particle with an empty node to its left. Thus, the total number of corners represents the number of nodes at which PASEP can move, i. e. the total current activity of the system. As the number of inner corners and regular corners is connected, we limit our discussion to just regular corners and show that asymptotically, the number of corners in a tableau of length $n$ is normally distributed.

Refined Enumeration of Corners in Tree-like Tableaux

Tree-like tableaux are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams originally introduced by Aval et al., which are in simple bijections with permutation tableaux coming from Postnikov's study of totally nonnegative Grassmanian and alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. In this paper, we confirm two conjectures of Gao et al. on the refined enumeration of non-occupied corners in tree-like tableaux and symmetric tree-like tableaux via intermediate structures of alternative tableaux, linked partitions, type $B$ alternative tableaux and type $B$ linked partitions.

On the Sign-imbalance of Permutation Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation tableaux were introduced by Steingrímsson and Williams. Corteel and Kim defined the sign of a permutation tableau in terms of the number of unrestricted columns. The sign-imbalance of permutation tableaux of length $n$ is the sum of signs over permutation tableaux of length $n$. They have btained a formula for the sign-imbalance of permutation tableaux of length $n$ by using generating functions and asked for a combinatorial proof. Moreover, they raised the question of finding a sign-imbalance formula for type $B$ permutation tableaux introduced by Lam and Williams. We define a statistic $\nwnm$ over permutations and show that the number of unrestricted columns over permutation tableaux of length $n$ is equally distributed with $\nwnm$ over permutations of length $n$. This leads to a combinatorial interpretation of the formula of Corteel and Kim. For type $B$ permutation tableaux, we define the sign of a type $B$ permutation tableau in term of the number of certain rows and columns. On the other hand, we construct a bijection between the type $B$ permutation tableaux of length $n$ and symmetric permutations of length $2n$ and we show that the statistic $\nwnm$ over symmetric permutations of length $2n$ is equally distributed with the number of certain rows and columns over type $B$ permutation tableaux of length $n$. Based on this correspondence and an involution on symmetric permutation of length $2n$, we obtain a sign-imbalance formula for type $B$ permutation tableaux.

Stammering tableaux
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (September 15, 2017) dmtcs:1351 • View PublicationBIB
The PASEP (Partially Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) is a probabilistic model of moving particles, which is of great interest in combinatorics, since it appeared that its partition function counts some tableaux. These tableaux have several variants such as permutations tableaux, alternative tableaux, tree- like tableaux, Dyck tableaux, etc. We introduce in this context certain excursions in Young's lattice, that we call stammering tableaux (by analogy with oscillating tableaux, vacillating tableaux, hesitating tableaux). Some natural bijections make a link with rook placements in a double staircase, chains of Dyck paths obtained by successive addition of ribbons, Laguerre histories, Dyck tableaux, etc.
Enumeration of Corners in Tree-like Tableaux and a Conjectural (a,b)-analogue
In this paper, we confirm a conjecture of Laborde-Zubieta on the enumeration of corners in tree-like tableaux. Our proof is based on Aval, Boussicault and Nadeau's bijection between tree-like tableaux and permutation tableaux, and Corteel and Nadeau's bijection between permutation tableaux and permutations. This last bijection sends a corner in permutation tableaux to an ascent followed by a descent in permutations, this enables us to enumerate the number of corners in permutation tableaux, and thus to completely solve L.-Z.'s conjecture. Moreover, we give a bijection between corners and runs of size 1 in permutations, which gives an alternative proof of the enumeration of corners. Finally, we introduce an ($a$,$b$)-analogue of this enumeration, and explain the implications on the PASEP.
Enumeration of Corners in Tree-like Tableaux

In this paper, we confirm conjectures of Laborde-Zubieta on the enumeration of corners in tree-like tableaux and in symmetric tree-like tableaux. In the process, we also enumerate corners in (type $B$) permutation tableaux and (symmetric) alternative tableaux. The proof is based on Corteel and Nadeau's bijection between permutation tableaux and permutations. It allows us to interpret the number of corners as a statistic over permutations that is easier to count. The type $B$ case uses the bijection of Corteel and Kim between type $B$ permutation tableaux and signed permutations. Moreover, we give a bijection between corners and runs of size 1 in permutations, which gives an alternative proof of the enumeration of corners. Finally, we introduce conjectural polynomial analogues of these enumerations, and explain the implications on the PASEP.

Corners in tree-like tableaux

In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux, combinatorial objects which exhibit a natural tree structure and are connected to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP). There was a conjecture made on the total number of corners in tree--like tableaux and the total number of corners in symmetric tree--like tableaux. In this paper, we prove the first conjecture leaving the proof of the second conjecture to the full version of this paper. Our proofs are based on the bijection with permutation tableaux or type--B permutation tableaux and consequently, we also prove results for these tableaux.

The explicit double sum for the associated Laguerre polynomials is derived combinatorially. The moments are described using certain statistics on permutations and permutation tableaux. Another derivation of the double sum is provided using only the moment generating function.

Permutation statistics and weak {B}ruhat order in permutation tableaux of type $B$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many important statistics of signed permutations are realized in the corresponding permutation tableaux or bare tableaux of type $B$: Alignments, crossings and inversions of signed permutations are realized in the corresponding permutation tableaux of type $B$, and the cycles of signed permutations are understood in the corresponding bare tableaux of type $B$. This leads us to relate the number of alignments and crossings with other statistics of signed permutations and also to characterize the covering relation in weak Bruhat order on Coxeter system of type $B$ in terms of permutation tableaux of type $B$.

A combinatorial proof of a symmetry of $(t,q)$-Eulerian numbers of type $B$ and type $D$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A symmetry of $(t,q)$-Eulerian numbers of type $B$ is combinatorially proved by defining an involution preserving many important statistics on the set of permutation tableaux of type $B$. This involution also proves a symmetry of the generating polynomial $\hat{D}_{n, k}(p,q,r)$ of number of crossings and alignments, and hence $q$-Eulerian numbers of type $A$ defined by L. Williams. By considering a restriction of our bijection, we were led to define a new statistic on the permutations of type $D$ and $(t,q)$-Eulerian numbers of type $D$, which is proved to have a nice symmetry as well. We conjecture that our new statistic is in the family of Eulerian statistics for the permutations of type $D$.
Linked Partitions and Permutation Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linked partitions are introduced by Dykema in the study of transforms in free probability theory, whereas permutation tableaux are introduced by Steingrímsson and Williams in the study of totally positive Grassmannian cells. Let $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $L(n,k)$ denote the set of linked partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks, let $P(n,k)$ denote the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ descents, and let $T(n,k)$ denote the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ rows. Steingrímsson and Williams found a bijection between the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ rows and the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ weak excedances. Corteel and Nadeau gave a bijection from the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ columns to the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ descents. In this paper, we establish a bijection between $L(n,k)$ and $P(n,k-1)$ and a bijection between $L(n,k)$ and $T(n,k)$. Restricting the latter bijection to noncrossing linked partitions, we find that the corresponding permutation tableaux can be characterized by pattern avoidance.
Combinatorics of the permutation tableaux of type B
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 4(2) (2013), 191--228 • Search Publication
Permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects related with permutations and various statistics on them. They appeared in connection with total positivity in Grassmannians, and stationary probabilities in a PASEP model. In particular they gave rise to an interesting q-analog of Eulerian numbers. The purpose of this article is to study some combinatorial properties of type B permutation tableaux, defined by Lam and Williams, and links with signed permutation statistics. We show that many of the tools used for permutation tableaux generalize in this case, including: the Matrix Ansatz (a method originally related with the PASEP), bijections with labeled paths and links with continued fractions, bijections with signed permutations. In particular we obtain a q-analog of the type B Eulerian numbers, having a lot in common with the previously known q-Eulerian numbers: for example they have a nice symmetry property, they have the type B Narayana numbers as constant terms. The signed permutation statistics arising here are of several kinds. Firstly, there are several variants of descents and excedances, and more precisely of flag descents and flag excedances. Other statistics are the crossings and alignments, which generalize a previous definition on (unsigned) permutations. There are also some pattern-like statistics arising from variants of the bijection of Fran\ccon and Viennot.
Tree-like tableaux
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20 (2013) P34 • View PublicationBIB
In this work we introduce and study tree-like tableaux, which are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams in simple bijection with permutation tableaux and alternative tableaux. We exhibit an elementary insertion procedure on our tableaux which gives a clear proof that tree-like tableaux of size n are counted by n!, and which moreover respects most of the well-known statistics studied originally on alternative and permutation tableaux. Our insertion procedure allows to define in particular two simple new bijections between tree-like tableaux and permutations: the first one is conceived specifically to respect the generalized pattern 2-31, while the second one respects the underlying tree of a tree-like tableau.

Permutation Tableaux and the Dashed Permutation Pattern 32-1
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a solution to a problem posed by Corteel and Nadeau concerning permutation tableaux of length n and the number of occurrences of the dashed pattern 32--1 in permutations on [n]. We introduce the inversion number of a permutation tableau. For a permutation tableau T and the permutation $π$ obtained from T by the bijection of Corteel and Nadeau, we show that the inversion number of T equals the number of occurrences of the dashed pattern 32--1 in the reverse complement of $π$. We also show that permutation tableaux without inversions coincide with L-Bell tableaux introduced by Corteel and Nadeau.

Combinatorics on permutation tableaux of type $A$ and type $B$

We give another bijective proof of a result of Corteel and Nadeau. We find a generating function related to unrestricted columns of permutation tableaux. As a consequence, we obtain a sign-imbalance formula for permutation tableaux. We extend the first bijection of Corteel and Nadeau between permutations and permutation tableaux to type $B$ objects. Using this type $B$ bijection, we generalize a result of Lam and Williams. We prove that the bijection of Corteel and Nadeau and our type $B$ bijection can be expressed as zigzag maps on the alternative representation.

Combinatorics of the three-parameter PASEP partition function
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18(1) (2011), Article P22 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) on a finite number of sites with open and directed boundary conditions. Its partition function was calculated by Blythe, Evans, Colaiori, and Essler. It is known to be a generating function of permutation tableaux by the combinatorial interpretation of Corteel and Williams. We prove bijectively two new combinatorial interpretations. The first one is in terms of weighted Motzkin paths called Laguerre histories and is obtained by refining a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger. Secondly we show that this partition function is the generating function of permutations with respect to right-to-left minima, right-to-left maxima, ascents, and 31-2 patterns, by refining a bijection of Francon and Viennot. Then we give a new formula for the partition function which generalizes the one of Blythe & al. It is proved in two combinatorial ways. The first proof is an enumeration of lattice paths which are known to be a solution of the Matrix Ansatz of Derrida & al. The second proof relies on a previous enumeration of rook placements, which appear in the combinatorial interpretation of a related normal ordering problem. We also obtain a closed formula for the moments of Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials.

The structure of alternative tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. These tableaux are in simple bijection with permutation tableaux, defined previously by Postnikov . We exhibit a simple recursive structure for alternative tableaux. From this decomposition, we can easily deduce a number of enumerative results. We also give bijections between these tableaux and certain classes of labeled trees. Finally, we exhibit a bijection with permutations, and relate it to some other bijections that already appeared in the literature.
