A q-enumeration of alternating permutations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 31(7) (2010), 1892--1906 • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of Euler states that the tangent numbers are an alternating sum of Eulerian numbers. A dual result of Roselle states that the secant numbers can be obtained by a signed enumeration of derangements. We show that both identities can be refined with the following statistics: the number of crossings in permutations and derangements, and the number of patterns 31-2 in alternating permutations. Using previous results of Corteel, Rubey, Prellberg, and the author, we derive closed formulas for both q-tangent and q-secant numbers. There are two different methods to obtain these formulas: one with permutation tableaux and one with weighted Motzkin paths (Laguerre histories).

Canopy of binary trees, Catalan tableaux and the asymmetric exclusion process
Published in FPSAC 2007, Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Tianjiin : Chine (2007) • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we answer to a question asked by Steingrimsson and Williams about certain permutation tableaux: we construct a bijection between binary trees and the so-called Catalan tableaux. These tableaux are certain Ferrers (or Young) diagrams filled with some 0's and 1's, satisfying a certain hook condition, and are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. They form a subclass of the permutation tableaux, enumerated by n!, introduced by Postnikov in his study of totally non negative Grassmannians and networks. Secondly we relate this new Catalan bijection with the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP), a very rich and well studied 1D gas model in statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium systems. We continue some combinatorial understanding of that model, in the spirit of works by Shapiro, Zeilberger and more recently by Brak, Essam, Rechnitzer, Corteel, Williams, Duchi and Schaeffer. Emphasis is made on the non-classical notion of canopy of a binary tree, analog of the classical up-down sequence of a permutation.

Asymptotic Normality of Statistics on Permutation Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use a probabilistic approach to derive the expressions for the characteristic functions of basic statistics defined on permutation tableaux. Since our expressions are exact, we can identify the distributions of basic statistics (like the number of unrestricted rows, the number of rows, and the number of 1s in the first row) exactly. In all three cases the distributions are known to be asymptotically normal after a suitable normalization. We also establish the asymptotic normality of the number of superfluous 1s. The latter result relies on a bijection between permutation tableaux and permutations and on a rather general sufficient condition for the central limit theorem for the sums of random variables in terms of dependency graph of the summands.

Rook placements in Young diagrams and permutation enumeration
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 47(1) (2011), 1--22 • View PublicationBIB
Given two operators $\hat D$ and $\hat E$ subject to the relation $\hat D\hat E -q \hat E \hat D =p$, and a word $w$ in $M$ and $N$, the rewriting of $w$ in normal form is combinatorially described by rook placements in a Young diagram. We give enumerative results about these rook placements, particularly in the case where $p=(1-q)/q^2$. This case naturally arises in the context of the PASEP, a random process whose partition function and stationary distribution are expressed using two operators $D$ and $E$ subject to the relation $DE-qED=D+E$ (matrix Ansatz). Using the link obtained by Corteel and Williams between the PASEP, permutation tableaux and permutations, we prove a conjecture of Corteel and Rubey about permutation enumeration. This result gives the generating function for permutations of given size with respect to the number of ascents and occurrences of the pattern 13-2, this is also the moments of the $q$-Laguerre orthogonal polynomials.

Enumerations of Permutations by Circular Descent Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The circular descent of a permutation $σ$ is a set $\{σ(i)\mid σ(i)>σ(i+1)\}$. In this paper, we focus on the enumerations of permutations by the circular descent set. Let $cdes_n(S)$ be the number of permutations of length $n$ which have the circular descent set $S$. We derive the explicit formula for $cdes_n(S)$. We describe a class of generating binary trees $T_k $ with weights. We find that the number of permutations in the set $CDES_n(S)$ corresponds to the weights of $T_k$. As a application of the main results in this paper, we also give the enumeration of permutation tableaux according to their shape.
Combinatorial Hopf algebras, noncommutative Hall-Littlewood functions, and permutation tableaux
Published in Advances in Math. 224 (2010), 1311-1348 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according to crossings; the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of descent bottoms according to occurrences of the generalized pattern 2-31.

On some properties of permutation tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the relation between various permutation statistics and properties of permutation tableaux. We answer some of the questions of Steingrimsson and Williams (math.CO/0507149), in particular, on the distribution of the bistatistic of numbers of rows and essential ones in permutation tableaux. We also consider and enumerate sets of permutation tableaux related to some pattern restrictions on permutations.

A Markov chain on permutations which projects to the PASEP
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is q times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability alpha and exit from the right with probability beta. It has been observed that the (unique) stationary distribution of the PASEP has remarkable connections to combinatorics -- see for example the papers of Derrida, Duchi and Schaeffer, and Corteel. Most recently we proved that in fact the (normalized) probability of being in a particular state of the PASEP can be viewed as a certain weight generating function for permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. (This result implies the previous combinatorial results.) However, our proof relied on the matrix ansatz of Derrida et al, and hence did not give an intuitive explanation of why one should expect the steady state distribution of the PASEP to involve such nice combinatorics. In this paper we define a Markov chain -- which we call the PT chain -- on the set of permutation tableaux which projects to the PASEP in a very strong sense. This gives a new proof of our previous result which bypasses the matrix ansatz altogether. Furthermore, via the bijection from permutation tableaux to permutations, the PT chain can also be viewed as a Markov chain on the symmetric group. Another nice feature of the PT chain is that it possesses a certain symmetry which extends the "particle-hole symmetry" of the PASEP. More specifically, this is a graph-automorphism on the state diagram of the PT chain which is an involution; this has a simple description in terms of permutations.

Tableaux combinatorics for the asymmetric exclusion process
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is $q$ times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability $α$ and exit from the right with probability $β$. In this paper we prove a close connection between the PASEP and the combinatorics of permutation tableaux. (These tableaux come indirectly from the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian, via work of Postnikov, and were studied in a paper of Steingrimsson and the second author.) Namely, we prove that in the long time limit, the probability that the PASEP is in a particular configuration $τ$ is essentially the generating function for permutation tableaux of shape $λ(τ)$ enumerated according to three statistics. The proof of this result uses a result of Derrida, Evans, Hakim, and Pasquier on the {\it matrix ansatz} for the PASEP model. As an application, we prove some monotonicity results for the PASEP. We also derive some enumerative consequences for permutations enumerated according to various statistics such as weak excedence set, descent set, crossings, and occurences of generalized patterns.

Permutation Tableaux and Permutation Patterns
In this paper we introduce and study a class of tableaux which we call permutation tableaux; these tableaux are naturally in bijection with permutations, and they are a distinguished subset of the Le-diagrams of Alex Postnikov. The structure of these tableaux is in some ways more transparent than the structure of permutations; therefore we believe that permutation tableaux will be useful in furthering the understanding of permutations. We give two bijections from permutation tableaux to permutations. The first bijection carries tableaux statistics to permutation statistics based on relative sizes of pairs of letters in a permutation and their places. We call these statistics weak excedance statistics, because of their close relation to weak excedances. The second bijection carries tableaux statistics (via the weak excedance statistics) to statistics based on generalized permutation patterns. We then give enumerative applications of these bijections. One nice consequence of these results is that the polynomial enumerating permutation tableaux according to their content generalizes both Carlitz' q-analog of the Eulerian numbers and the more recent q-analog of the Eulerian numbers of the second author. We conclude our paper with a list of open problems, some of which have now been solved by Burstein, Corteel, Eriksen, Reifegerste, and Viennot.
